based investigations that will be the basis upon which new ways of seeing, experiencing, and transforming landscape may be envisioned. Then these investigations will be transfered as trigger points that will gather, extend, reveal, and catalyze new relationships of landscape in Bartram's Garden. These site-based investigations, which are called ‘traverses,’ involve complete immersion in the act of walking, drawing, surveying, photographing, model-

making, and researching in the field. Through various ways of traverses, the place is no longer a static site to me. Insteadly, I become interested in all the moving elements in this space. It is a symphony of events both for nature and people. Therefore, I use photos to capture events, mappings to record events, models to reread events. And finally, one single element to represent the events of space, as well as support the events of people. That is the wall of events. However, wall can not only be a "wall". It can be transfered into ground, fields, bushes,

platforms and so on. Just as Simon Unwin says, 'Wall is positioned not merely for

compositional reasons but to deflect people movement and orchestrate their

experience'. And for me, it becomes one way of landscape.

02 FOLDING WATER Bridesburg Waterfront Park Design, 502 Studio, PennDesign

Studio Project, Individual

This project, "Folding Water", is located at Bridesburg, a small town near Delaware River. It is a 80 acres'post-industrial field, which was used by Philly Coke 50 years ago and has been abandoned for 10 years. Surrounding the site are local residential and light industrial zones, whose access towards Delaware River have been cut off by our site. After doing some research, several facts attract my attention that this site is at high risk of storm surge and it has insufficient sewer outfall. Also, the water in and surrounding this site actually has a lot of problems like carrying contamination, low accessibility and limited types of experience. Therefore, I want to use folding as a way to encourage people to get into this site, transfer this auto-centric site into a connective field. So it can have more buffer and exchange of water between local runoff and delaware river, higher accessibility and easier dredge, as well as multiple experience of

wet and dry zones. In order to create multiple experiences and spaces for people, vegetation and wildlife, studies about different materials and scales of folding were made to see how they will change through different time and seasons. The organization in this site is started by connecting two main sources of water from local area towards Delaware River. Boundaries of our site are eliminated to absorb the surrounding zones and community into our site, as well as expanding green space into the local areas. In order to create different types of wet zones, local water data was collected, and accordingly, 5 types of wet zones were selected into this filed. They are at different position, have variable abilities to

retain water. But due to the different condition of these wet zones, they will influence people’s circulation and activities around them. And finally, landform was changed in order to create multiple experiences of wet zones meanwhile reserving the existing plants.

Studio Project, Individual

Slate belt will have 57% population growth in the coming 20 years. They are mainly middle class families, college students and elders. Meanwhile, the townships in this region are losing their main streets, farmland and natural resource. Therefore, how to build up a better setting for the local residents and future coming people is the main focus of this project. As the regional strategy, connecting the townships along 512 as one functional linear town, and introduce natural resource and farmland into this belt to create farm town and forest town to stitch the relationship between rural area, natural area and agricultural area. Then, zoom into a specific place, the space between Bangor and East Bangor is a potential area for realizing the regional strategy. This place turns out to have huge amount of latent landscape and neglected treasure, so the design main goal becomes to use landscape to get people into quarries,

create shared forest/agrarian yard for communities, and prepare condition/ settings for use and development. In order to do that, there are 5 steps phasing: unblock quarry, capture soil / stabilize slope, embed circulation, grow edible forest and integrate development. For the master plan, one loop trail is connecting quarries and high points in this site. Driveway connects the main trail with main roads, and create community center at the meeting points for both visitors and future communities. Rest nodes are set along main trail for certain distance to guide people and defining their location. Amenity center is built at the center of this site, near a lake-like quarry to build more connection between townships. Slope stabilizing zones are

Advisor: Ellen Neises

created near where main trail goes near steep slopes. Edible forests are at the lower side of future development area to better control runoff. Those settings also become the community yard and garden for future development.

Different prefab houses and lot types offer choices for new communities with minimal site disturbance.

Oriented trees and ornamental trees guide visitors walking through the landscape, and create different edge scenery for small quarries.

Different types of platforms open up the quarry to people, let them see this amazing place, and introduce new programs for this historic cultural landscape. 路 32

Different from the cultural buildings of the past, this project is not aiming to be a significant landmark, but rather a humble and phenomenal space. This space is created based on the understanding of local history, culture and the most fundamental bonding between the local people and the site. And we believe the essence of this project is to design a space that can inspire individuals to experience time. The concept of the design comes from the traditional use of natural light in local caves. Through the sun path analysis, a series of abstract light volumes are generated and gradually immerging into the underground, which forms a multi-layered but still continuous space. Traditional material (sand and concrete) is casted within a contemporary steel cross-arches system based on the geological understanding on the site. So from inside, people sees the extraordinary interior quality, while looking from outside the culture center melts itself into landscape. In this perspective, rather than just a container of exhibition, performance and education, Bamiyan Culture Centre is more a cross point of art, culture and humanity.

05 SPATIAL METATHESIS Battersea Power Station Reinvention, Museum of Archtiecture

The Museum of Architecture bases on an idea of reorganizing the space in exhibition building. Museums began as the private collections of wealthy individuals, families or institutions of art and rare or curious natural objects and artifacts. Therefore, usually, partition walls are set by architects to strictly define exhibition space in museums, and the remaining space undertakes the role of circulation. However, this pattern of museum design leads to the inflexibility of exhibition space. While the Centre Pompidou provides a radical pattern of modern exhibition center. Hanging equipment and passageway outside, the building becomes a machine for making space since inner space is totally liberated. But excessive free space also makes it difficult for special exhibitions and permanent display. Thus, "metathesis" becomes the main concept of this project since we try to find the balance between fixation and freedom in exhibition building.
