INTERACTIVE HUB -Residential complex Da Meisha, Shen Zhen

The final year work is dedicated to Mass Customized Housing program, which employs contemporary technologies to invent physical form of social relationship. In this case, an opportunity of tacklling with complex natural landscape is alsvo given by a slope site in Dameisha, Shen Zhen. Dameisha Town has various residential developments but neither of them can support an active community while keeping a coherent relationship with natural landscape. With those concerns, interactivity between residents and the landscape need to be established through a multi-layer circulation network. Meanwhile, privacy and lighting condition need to be treated carefully in the complex space. 03

The old town center represents the low-rise/high-density housing type. Houses within the street network are easy to access. Public programs mixed with houses created prosperous communal activities. The residential towers have high plot ratio and nice views from housing units. Lifts provide fast and convenient access to every unit but limited the interactive activities, which usually happen when people walking outside and encounter others. The villas on slopes vacy and nice views environment. But the not very accessible.

For programmatic experimentation, the arrangement of public programs and housing units are studied in plan and section. Views and circulations are concerned in both studies and different matches of sectional/planar arrangements are provided. The selected “S5-P5� arrangement provided scattered housing blocks connected by public platforms in different levels. Multiple vertical circulations are provided in public area to increase outdoor activities.

MASSING MODEL

VIEW STUDY PHASE-I includes 5 building blocks on mid&high zone, which is 60m to 110m from sea level.

Each block has front view of the sea side and back view of mountains. A driveway from Da Meisha goes all the way up to the ground level of Phase I towers. Upper level of towers will have decks extended to slope behind to interact with the terrain. Express lifts will be proposed for convenient access to high platforms.


Examples of overshadowing effect LIFT SHAFT STAIRCASE

When creating public platforms on high levels between residential blocks, the overshadowing effects must be carefully dealt with. If the sizes of platform exceed a proper degree, the daylighting of housing units will be decreased and cause unpleasant experience. Shadow evaluation planes are set every floor to study the composition of shadow cast by surroundings. The shape and height of public platforms will be decided based on that result. The fundamental principle is using areas with sufficient direct sunlight for public platform. The rest will be left open to introduce diffuse light from sky dome as compensation. The southern sides of housing units will be left open to receive daylight.

ENVELOPE A

Besides the study of voids on public platforms, their peripheral conditions are defined by three envelopes.Each one contains the majority of voids between housing blocks. The envelopes are independent in vertical circulation and connected horizontally by narrow passages along building blocks. In terms of programmatic arrangement, the area within envelopes is mainly proposed for public activities.

Housing units have 2-storey type and 1-storey type in order to fit in the circulation network of public platforms. Typical floor have 4 units while special units, which have larger flat sizes, are proposed at lower level and top level. Lower level special units have closer view to the landscape garden bellow. Top level units have panorama views towards the beach and sea.

Entrance gardens and balconies are set as buffer zones between the public activities and private life. People at the public platform will not look directly into nearby rooms. Those spaces can also create vertical greenery besides housings, which echoes the natural green on surrounding mountains.

AGGREGATION/EROSION -The Museum of Unnatural History New York City

The studio program will be a satellite pilot project for the Global Seed Bank to create a Branch Museum and Teaching and Learning Laboratory for Plant Species Extinction. As part of the pedagogy of the studio, we will examine the renewed interest in biomimicry and morphogenesis as they relate to architectural design.

Our Unnatural History Museum will be part of phase 2 of the New York High Line development. This studio is interested in confronting and reconfiguring the boundary between the ‘natural’ and the artificial or nature and culture. It is the hope of the studio that the de-coupling of the opposition of nature and culture will enable an intertwined, deeper and more complex understanding of ecology today.


UNIT TRANSFORMATION

BASIC UNIT DIAGRAM-1

This exercise start with developing an architectural monocoque unit whose characteristics might be shared with the biological organisms that were previously studied for studio. The monocoque should develop techniques for producing rigidity-either through its materiality or its geometry. It should consider systems of connection to other units, anticipating a catalogue of connectivities, as well as a series of variations that modify its behavior. The basic unit is formed by 4 modular triangular surfaces, whose edges vary from 40 to 80. The flexible form after folding allows diverse angles between edges.

One small opening is created in the center of basic cone unit to control surface area, volume and openess of units. This construction consists of multiple cones which aggregate in two manners: face connection(2 units share a surface)and edge connection(2 units share 2 or more edges). Two aggregation means not only attach units but also limit their flexibility, if more than 3 edges of 1 unit are connected with other units, it can no longer transform.

The cone units developed in preliminary study offer a directional volume for programs to inhabit. Aggregation rules also perform as an organization system which creates mixed function zone and public area in connected locations. Physically, rooms are located within cell walls, whose thickness varies according to functional requirement and the potential development of the cluster. Around central axis of a cell,sufficient area is preserved as circulation, exhibition or light wells depending on its geometrical context. Utilitarian service and circulation spaces are embedded into cell wall as well as most of seed storage space.

As the program centers spread and embedded into the cell wall, adjacent cells may share certain area which belongs to one center. The “Complete” cluster condition is defined as several cell walls contain all programs of a program center. When program space split into other unoccupied cells but incapable to fill them. That condition is defined “Incomplete” in terms of organization, because the definition of that central space needs another branch of a different program cluster. In a shared cell, created by two incomplete clusters, central space is preserved for public use, which would promote communication of different user groups. At the meantime, central space in complete clusters is dedicated to its own purpose and can be partially occupied in further expansion as the cell wall thickens.

When two complete clusters are connected, the mergence is weaker and circulation connection becomes the main concern. That can happen at the ends of cells or within the wall, where additional passages are allowed. This logic can also be adapted to the case where the building encounters highline highline acts as an infinite branch of urban context, closes entertainment cluster.

UTOPIA SHANGHAI -Redevelopment of Linong Housing Shang hai

Shanghai, which is experiencing a boom in urban development, leaves something to be done at the very center of it. This site has a rich context as the evidence of changes in infrastructure, public life and policies throughout the last century. When the gigantic highway and skyscrapers start to dominate the city as markers of the modernization, the grass-root class still lives in their shabby shelters just beneath them. Simultaneously, the local memories fade together with the disappearance of traditional Linong housing. There’re segregations between different social classes as well as the city’s past and future. Architecture has the responsibility to answer the call of this complicated situation. 37

Study area A consists of 3 zones on the west side of N.Chengdu road. There’re also some districts with similar appearance on the north bank of Suzhou creek, which belong to Zhabei region. These districts are one of the major old residential area remained for low-income local people as well as immigrant workers.

Study area C consists of 3 zones on the south side of W.Nanjing road. It belongs to Jingan region and next to W.Nanjing metro station. There are both typical li-nong housing district and villas which take the style of French Eclecticism.

It’s divided into 2 parts by W.Beijing road, low rise old districts on the north side and 4-6 stories buildings on the south side. Study area E consists of 7 zones on the west side of Renmin road. The districts are arranged tight around a market. These zones can be regarded as extensions of Yuyuan old town.They are generally taken by real estate developers and made into high rise buildings at top prize in shanghai. Some successful programs like X i n t i a n d i a r e n e a r t h i s a r e a .

Study area F,G&H consists of 13 zones between S.Chongqing road and Zhonghua road. This area stretches on the border of Luwan region and Huangpu region which contains enormous old buildings in different conditions. This area is the focus for the municipal old district reforming program.

The site locates next to Yan’an highway interchange. It’s also close to Study Area D, where low rise Li-nong housing of 1930s still mixed with shops and office buildings along Huaihai Road. The unique placement between huge highway and old district create tension as well as a potential to show the inner conflict of urban development in Shanghai. That conflict could be defined as the override of communal life and old district environment during the process of rapid urban redevelopment. The proposed development will include a museum of diverse lifestyle in Shanghai and new houses for old district residents. 41

Two rows of 3 stories blocks stretch from the west side of the site, run beneath the highway and rest separately in two lots on the east side. Between those two rows are one courtyard of this community and a city-life museum hanging under the highway. Existing urban fabric – lanes network – from the southern D4 district continues to divided housing blocks. Meanwhile, detached feature walls are arranged to symbolize the decomposition process of old districts and the remaining of traditional life only as a “facade” to the city in rapid changes.

While the old city-life is exhibited in the museum, a new life style is generated and displayed on the courtyard, in the lanes and within the neighborhood. This proposal is not only aiming for preserving the old one, but for reforming and studying the new communal life. +10.0m

Lantau Island has undergone extensive development during the last 12 years. Natural or slow growth of settlements on the south and west of the has been countered by large scale developments to the north and These developments has pushed infrastructure and artificial landscape [ land reclamation, terra forming ] in ways that have modified the island significantly across its mountainous spine, often layering or intersecting one condition on another. We will need to understand Lantau island’s patterns of urban surface, topography, infrastructure, landscape and settlement patterns old and new. We will begin to manipulate / transform these surfaces to create individual interpretations of “Landscape Architecture”. 49

The design studio starts from modern paintings, in order to establish a formal language before we enter the site. Collage paintings by German painter Kurt Schwitters are assigned by our Professor. Each student has to make a formal comparison between 2 of them. The collage consists of various elements in daily life. Despite of their differences in color, texture and thickness, they can be recognized as figures with different degrees of complexity. During the detail reading of the painting, I classified the figures into 4 categories according to the remaining recognition: edges and corners of the figures. The figures in category A & B have all their corners or only missing one of them, which means the original shape can be directly seen or recognized through extrapolation. While the figures in category C & D miss two or even more corners, only segments of their edges remain. In these cases they can only be read as fragments, which need supplementary information to form new identities (or composition).

Category B is 1st degree [im]perfect figure, which is perfect figure missing one corner and part of its contour. It’s still recognizable. The missing part is flipped 90 degrees to vertical direction. The length of missing piece becomes the height of the visible piece.

Category C&D in 1st painting become 2nd degree [im]perfect figure, which misses more than one corners and most of its contour. It can’t be restored to its original form. In this case the missing length is measured by extending the edge to painting frame. The maximum length becomes the height of the piece.

Category C&D in second painting become 3rd degree [im]perfect figure. The assumption is that these figures are driven and deformed by the compositional force. In this case, figures are projected to the central line of compositional force. The distance between each corner and the line becomes height of that point.

The site is a piece of land reclaimed from Tung Chung bay. The connections proposed within the site form a network between several access points. Programs along the connections serve people from different communities. Two paths - one cuts through the urban fabric and one stretches along the sea coast - are used as connection between our site and hiking park, which is currently the recreational center of Tung Chung area. 53

PARAMETRIC EXERCISE -HERD BEHAVIORAL SYSTEM SEM1 Yr3 / 2009

The systematic approach in evolution has been discovered in many research fields such as biological structure and speciesbehavior. Primitive interaction and basic decisions in those creatures show a highly adaptive solution to natural environments as well as the social structure within the hive. Many models in biological study have been employed in human mass behavior study in urban context. Even though direct translation is not possible, architecture can benefit from those organizational strategies in certain means. Meanwhile, structural potential in natural world has been studied in bionics for centuries and many of them (such as honey-comb)are proved to be beyond any human production. 59


When observed in a global scale through a year, the seasonal migration of birds can be regarded as a behavioral system of a whole species (or several species). It is quite rigorous in some aspects, as the time period, destination, orientation method, etc. The actual routes which consist of temporal settlements and breeding area may vary according to the annual change of parameters as temperature, landscape, rainfall, food supply, and wind direction. My focus would be on the birds’ decision-making process affected by parameters. The main two behaviors show as the multiple airway and narrow routes. The former based on terrain influence only and results in a collective travel route. The latter may be significantly deformed by key source as water, breeding area and food supply areas. Based on that observation, two hypothetical vector rules are formed to simulate migration in macro scale. 60

TKO 56 is a large retail development in Hong Kong. A customer service counter is required for general enquiry and holds control panels for nearby devices. The appearance of customer counter echoes the curvilinear scheme of shopping arcade. It consists of 2 parts – front side as workstation for 3 staffs and back side mainly as storage space. Staffs can access from side by lifting an operable panel. Corian and gypsum board are used to form the curvilinear shape. A column in the middle is covered with curved glass panels to reduce its massive visual impact. The design process involved several rounds of free-hand sketching and rhino modeling in order to adjust the shape and meet functional requirement. 63
