New look and extra equipment for C30 Volvo’s C30 range has undergone extensive revisions to make it even more appealing for drivers and businesses alike. The three-door SportCoupe not only features a sleek new front-end with new lights, bumper and grille, but there are also extensive changes under the metal. The new look C30 SportCoupe continues to use the highly efficient and sporty range of engines as before. This includes the 109PS 1.6-litre DRIVe diesel model equipped with Start/Stop which emits just 99g/km of CO2 and the 230PS turbocharged T5 flagship. Unlike other manufacturers who only offer low emission models with one trim level, Volvo continues to offer its DRIVe low emission technology on all models, including the sporty R-DESIGN trim level. Thanks to the revisions, buyers now get even more standard equipment, meaning the C30 offers even better value than before. Prices start at just £14,495 and the C30 will be offered in four trim levels – S, SE, SE Lux and the sporty R-DESIGN. All models come with ECC electronic climate control, Information Centre, electric windows, a leather steering wheel and gearknob, floor mats, CD player and an
Aux-in input for MP3 player connection. Completing the generous level of equipment is a set of alloy wheels as well as the range of advanced safety customers expect from a Volvo such as DSTC dynamic stability and traction control. SE trim level adds cruise control, steering wheel mounted stereo controls and special upholstery inside. Outside, extra equipment includes front fog lights, 17-inch alloy wheels and automatic folding electric door mirrors with ground lights. SE Lux enhances the SE trim level with the addition of luxurious leather upholstery, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, alloy wheels and active headlights with headlamp cleaning system. R-DESIGN models benefit from steering wheel remote audio controls, embossed leather/T-Tec upholstery, aluminium inserts on the centre console and doors, blue instrument dials and sports floor mats. On the outside, the R-DESIGN models feature a bodykit with front and rear spoilers and colour-coded side skirts, tailgate spoiler, front fog lights, chrome plated sports exhaust and grille and door mirror housings in silver matt finish, plus five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels.
DRIVING DOWN COSTS
The Volvo XC60 DRIVe range is already helping companies to drive down costs, thanks to its lower emissions and competitive pricing, and now it will prove even more cost-effective thanks to an improved residual value forecast. CAP has upgraded its residual value prediction of the XC60 2.4D DRIVe
SE model to 40% after three years and 60,000 miles, helping to lower the cost of depreciation. The XC60 DRIVe models were launched in the summer and fall below the allimportant 160g/km of CO2 threshold for writing down allowances. The introduction of the front-wheel drive allied to the frugal
2.4D engine means the model emits 159g/km of CO2 and returns a highly impressive 47.1mpg on the combined cycle. As a result, annual road tax is just £150 and company car drivers will pay less than £100 a month (£97.83) at the basic rate and £195.75 per month for 40% taxpayers (for 2009/10).
all-NEW S60 IS SCULPTED TO MOVE YOU
These are the first pictures of the all-new Volvo S60 saloon, which is due to go on sale next summer. The striking premium saloon has been designed to be sportier and more dynamic than any previous Volvo car. And as well as being sporty, the allnew S60 will push the boundaries of safety technology even further as it will debut
Volvo’s new Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection technology. The ground-breaking technology can detect a pedestrian who has walked out in front of the car. It will automatically brake to avoid the person at speeds below 15mph if the driver does not react in time (see page 1011 for a full explanation).
Stephen Odell, President and CEO of Volvo Cars, said: “Customers in this segment want emotional appeal, sporty design and dynamic driving properties. The S60 has it all. We’re convinced it will be one of the strongest contenders around.” The all-new Volvo S60 will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
style as standard
NEW C70 RANGE OFFERS SUB-160g/km MODEL Volvo’s stylish C70 coupe/convertible has also benefitted from styling enhancements with revised lights, bumper and grille. The sleek four-seater is now available with three trim levels – S, SE and SE Lux – and four engines: 2.4i and T5 petrol units, plus the D5 and 2.0D diesels. The latter now emits 158g/km of CO2 (manual gearbox), qualifying it for the enhanced writing down allowances. The 136PS engine also returns a frugal 47.1mpg on the combined cycle.
All models come equipped with the WHIPS whiplash protection system, as well as ECC electronic climate control, front fog lights, alloy wheels, cruise control, electric windows and Performance Sound Audio System. SE trim adds 17-inch alloys, power folding door mirrors, rear park assist, Bluetooth hands-free telephony and aluminium interior trim. SE Lux includes leather upholstery, electric driver’s seat and bending lights with headlamp cleaning system.
driven to please The driving dynamics and ride of the new Volvo S80 have been updated and improved by the introduction of two new chassis – the Lowered Dynamic Chassis and the Comfort Chassis. The Lowered Dynamic Chassis has been developed to offer drivers enhanced sporting driving characteristics and more responsive handling. The Comfort Chassis offers a compliant and un-interrupted smooth ride. The introduction of these new chassis gives customers the opportunity to tailor their S80 to suit their driving style – for inspired, enthusiastic driving or relaxed comfort. The lowered dynamic chassis is standard on the SE whilst the comfort chassis is standard on the Executive trim level. The Comfort Chassis will be the only chassis available on the Executive trim level. A new R-DESIGN Interior Pack has been introduced which includes Dynamic Sports leather faced front seats, R-DESIGN leather sports steering wheel and gearknob, unique instrument dials, aluminium pedals and sports floor mats. The pack is available on SE Premium and SE Lux Premium models and is priced at £500.
Sharper sports chassis for C30 All R-DESIGN C30 SportCoupe models now come equipped with a sports chassis as standard, while the chassis is an option on other trim levels in the range. The new chassis has been modified in several key areas to make the C30 an even better balanced and sporty car. The chassis lowers the C30 by 10 millimetres, resulting in a lower centre of gravity to enhance the
handling characteristics. The steering is also more precise, thanks to stiffer bushings and the steering ratio is lower, giving a 10% faster response to driver input. Spring stiffness has also been increased by 30%, along with stiffer dampers and roll stabilisers, in order to allow the C30 to maintain composure during harder driving.
VOLVO DRIVes EMISSIONS DOWN WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY Volvo has one of the widest ranges of lower emitting models on offer, ranging from the C30 SportCoupe to the S80 executive saloon and XC60 crossover Variants carrying the DRIVe badge which denote that they are the most fuel efficient models in their range. DRIVe models are available in the C30, S40, V50, V70, XC70, XC60 and S80 line ups, all offering excellent fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions. As a result, all versions offer low benefit-inkind tax bills for company car drivers, and also lower tax costs for companies. WHAT IS DRIVe? DRIVe brings together a host of efficiency boosting technologies under one banner, all spelling savings for drivers and companies. The transmission systems in all DRIVe models have been optimised to improve fuel economy, while at the same time improving comfort by reducing noise levels at higher speeds. A gearshift indicator housed in the instrument display prompts the driver of the optimum time to change gear to optimise fuel efficiency. DRIVe models also feature lowered suspension and smooth underbody panels
to improve aerodynamics, while low drag alloy wheels also help in maximizing the distance that the models can reach between fill-ups. The latest development to the DRIVe range is the addition of start/stop technology. Available on the C30, S40 and V50 models, this system automatically cuts the engine when the vehicle is at a stand still and the driver engages neutral. The engine then fires up again once the clutch is depressed and first gear is engaged. The whole process is carried out in fractions of a second – making it efficient and user-friendly. As a resul all C30 DRIVe start/stop models now emit just 99g/km of CO2 – putting them in the lowest 13% diesel benefit-inkind tax band, and also qualifying for zero rated VED. DRIVe R-DESIGN versions without start/ stop technology still acheive an impressive 119g/km. And the larger S40 and V50 models are no less impressive, emitting from just 104g/ km of CO2 (with start/stop) – again, low enough to fall into the 13% BIK banding.
THE DRIVe RANGE C30: 74.3mpg/99g/km of CO2 S40: 72.4mpg/104g/km of CO2 V50: 72.4mpg/104g/km of CO2 V70: 57.7mpg/129g/km of CO2 S80: 57.7mpg/129g/km of CO2 XC60: 47.1mpg/159g/km of CO2 XC70: 47.1mpg/159g/km of CO2 *Combined mpg figures. C02 is lowest in range
DRIVe TOWARDS ZERO EMISSIONS Volvo has set itself stringent challenges in terms of reducing the emissions from its cars. Following on from the successful DRIVe models which offer outstanding fuel economy and CO2 emission levels, Volvo is now working on the next generation of fuel saving technologies. The DRIVe Towards Zero plan will result in average CO2 emissions from its range of between 90 and 100g/km of CO2 by the year 2020.
To do this, Volvo is investing in three areas: • Continuing to invest in improving efficiency levels of its petrol and diesel engined models. • Moving to greater use of renewable fuels such as ethanol and natural gas. • Introducing plug-in hybrid models which can be recharged from domestic power supplies. Volvo will have such models on the road in 2012.
Relax, there’s a lower emitting volvo for you Volvo has one of the widest ranges of lower emission models available, with 90 DRIVe versions offered. From the ultra-low emission 99g/km C30 DRIVe with Start/Stop to the surprisingly efficient XC60 crossover with just 159g/km, there really is a DRIVe Volvo to suit all budgets. DRIVe variants are offered in the C30, S40, V50, V70, S80, XC60 and XC70 ranges, giving drivers a variety of models access to lower tax and fuel bills. Companies can also benefit from enhanced tax allowances thanks to the DRIVe models’ greener focus. * All figures quoted are correct at time of going to press (November 2009)

Technology: The unseen helping hand
Volvo is synonymous with safety, and the next generation of cars will be among the safest on the road. When the all-new S60 saloon goes on sale next year it will debut the next generation of Volvo’s preventative safety technology – Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection. The ground-breaking technology can detect a pedestrian who has walked out in front of the car, as well as automatically braking to avoid the person at speeds
below 15mph if the driver does not react in time. It is also effective in avoiding, or reducing the severity of, rear-end collisions. Statistics reveal that half of all drivers who hit another vehicle from behind do not brake at all prior to the collision. While the main aim of Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake and Pedestrian Detection is to alert the driver to brake or take evasive action, if he or she does not respond to the warning the system will
step in with full braking force moments before a collision is imminent. If the relative speed difference between the two vehicles is less than 15mph Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake can avoid a collision entirely. The system consists of a new dual-mode radar unit integrated into the car’s grille, a camera behind the inside rear-view mirror and a central control unit. The radar and camera continuously monitor the road in front of the car.
XC60 FITTED WITH CITY SAFETY AS STANDARD Every model in the XC60 range, including the sub-160g/km DRIVe model, comes with Volvo’s innovative City Safety collision avoidance system as standard. City Safety operates at speeds up to 19mph and uses lasers mounted at the top of the windscreen to monitor the
road ahead. If the vehicle in front slows suddenly or comes to a halt, the brakes are primed. If the car senses the driver will fail to react in time, it applies up to 50% of maximum braking force to help reduce the severity of impact. At speeds of up to 9mph, City Safety can even stop the car
before an accident. Volvo’s development of City Safety has been inspired by the high number of low speed incidents, and many fleet operators will be able to relate to the benefits and the potential to avoid paperwork and downtime involved in an accident.
A MILLION LIVES SAVED This year marks the 50th anniversary of the invention by Volvo of the three-point seatbelt – a device which has saved a million lives around the world. The three-point seatbelt was created by Volvo in 1959 and it was so convinced of the safety potential that it made the patent available for other manufacturers to use. To mark the 50th anniversary, Volvo has been presented with the Special International Award by Prince Michael of Kent, patron of The
Commission for Global Road Safety. He said: “I congratulate Volvo on its outstanding achievement. Its leadership and commitment will make a significant contribution to our aim of saving five million more lives across the world over the next 10 years.”
