volvo widens diesel choice
02
When did you last drive a Volvo? If it’s been a while, you’ve missed out on a lot. Today’s line-up of Volvo cars is not only one of the most stylish on the market, it also features advanced technology which is driving down emissions. This process of innovation has brought in sub-100g/km of CO² cars in the shape of the stylish and company car tax-beating C30 DRIVe, while executive models such as the V70 and S80 now offer unrivalled levels of CO² emissions at just 119g/km.
Volvo is to introduce a new diesel engine which offers improved performance with increased fuel economy and lower emissions. The all new 2.0 D diesel engine is being launched in the all-new S60, where it is badged D3 and produces 163bhp and 400Nm of torque. As a result, it accelerates from 0-62mph in just 9.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 137mph in six-speed manual gearbox guise. When fitted with the six-speed Geartronic automatic gearbox, 0-62mph acceleration takes exactly the same time, although the top speed drops slightly to 134mph. The new engine will make its way into every other Volvo model, except the XC90. The new 2.0 D 5 cylinder is in principle, the same engine as the present 2.4D, but cylinder capacity has been reduced
with a shorter stroke to optimise fuel consumption. With a manual gearbox fuel consumption is now up to 54.3mpg* on the combined cycle and CO² emissions of 138g/km* (* preliminary figures). The engine has been optimised to offer reduced fuel consumption and the injection system has a different type of piezoelectrical fuel valve compared with the D5 engine. These valves keep fuel consumption to a minimum thanks to exceptionally fast and precise injection pulses under high pressure. This results in far more efficient combustion. In order to give the car better driving properties, the turbocharger has been fine-tuned for high torque from low revs. A maintenance-free particulate filter that traps about 95 percent of the soot particles is fitted as standard, making the car even more environmentally friendly.
Of course, as you would expect of Volvo, there has been a host of safety innovations such as City Safety which will mitigate accidents below 19mph automatically. And now there’s the naughty Volvo – the all-new S60. This looks and drives like no Volvo has ever done before, bringing new levels of comfort, style and driving enjoyment to the market. You’ll find all the information you need on the all-new S60 in this latest issue. Volvo has changed. Make sure you don’t leave it too long before you drive a Volvo again. XC60 wins top fleet award The Volvo XC60 has been named Best SUV by influential title Fleet News at its annual awards. The XC60 beat off stiff competition from the Audi Q5, BMW X5 and Ford Kuga to win the title. Judges at the Fleet News Awards were impressed by the ‘great combination of quality, badge appeal and manageable running costs’ offered by the XC60. They added: “The XC60 does everything well. It’s as comfortable with a mountain rescue team as it is a city-based driver.
“It has strong residual values and a quality feel, as well as being safe and comfortable. And with the DRIVe option, it is available with sub-160g/km CO² emissions levels.” The judges particularly highlighted the sub160g/km version with front-wheel drive, saying it was available with all the luxury features of other models, but with potential savings for fleet operators and drivers. They added: “A focus on safety is part of Volvo’s heritage but with its unique City Safety system, the XC60 shows the company is still leading the way.”
EXECUTIVE DUO DROP BELOW 120G/KM
Volvo has announced tax-beating sub-120g/km versions of its two largest models. DRIVe versions of the S80 executive saloon and V70 premium estate, the fourth and fifth bodystyles launched delivering CO² emissions below 120 g/ km, now emit just 119g/km of CO². Delivering 109bhp and 240Nm of torque, the modified 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel engine provides improved fuel economy by 5.1mpg to 62.8mpg on the combined cycle, increasing both cars’ range to nearly 1000 miles. Both cars fall into Vehicle Excise Duty Band C - costing motorists just £30 from April first but £0 in year 1 - and Volvo estimates the new 119g/km engine reduces annual carbon emissions by 150kg over the S80 and V70 DRIVe’s previous low of 129g/km. Both cars now also qualify for the lowest
13% diesel benefit-in-kind tax band, ensuring lower company car tax bills. Volvo believes the two new cars offer the best environmental performance in their respective classes. Both cars provide lower Benefit-in-Kind tax bills for company motorists and fuel savings - 60 litres per annum - equivalent to receiving a free tank of fuel each year. Like all DRIVe models, drivers do not have to compromise on high levels of comfort and specification with both models being available to order in SE, SE Premium, SE Lux and SE Lux
Volvo will launch a new trim level across the range later this year aimed at making the buying process easier and also improving residual values. The ES trim level replaces the current S specification and brings with it a host of equipment. It will also make the Volvo range simpler to understand for fleet managers. However, the high level of specification offered on ES models means the offer is not an entry-level car per se. ES is an accepted and understood nomenclature which allows the fleet manager to easily perceive the Volvo
trim level heirarchy when allocating the right model to the right company car bandings. As well as offering more equipment and a simpler range grade, the move is likely to result in improved residual values following consultation with the industry’s price guides. ES trim will be introduced for the 2011 model year on the V70 and S80. It will also apply to every other model in the range, excluding the XC90. The all-new Volvo S60 will also be offered with the ES specification. Standard equipment on the S60 ES

Premium trim levels. Volvo has employed two main techniques to reduce CO² emissions further on both cars. Intelligent battery recharging ensures that the car’s control system only allows the alternator to charge the battery when the engine is operating at low load, for instance when driving downhill. In addition the belt that drives the alternator and air conditioning compressor benefits from reduced friction helping lower fuel consumption and emissions.
grade will include City Safety, ECC Electronic Climate Control, charcoal trim, information centre, cruise control, five-inch colour screen, Performance sound system, steering wheel-mounted remote controls for the stereo, a leather steering wheel and gear knob, and 16inch alloy wheels.
See page 8 for full details of the new engine nomenclature system from Volvo.

THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN A VOLVO. There’s cutting loose. breaking out. letting yourself off the leash. because when you’ve spent your whole life playing it safe, it’s time to just play. That’s why the naughty volvos are coming... POWER: Topping the S60 range is a new 3.0-litre T6 petrol engine delivering 304bhp and 440Nm of torque through an all-wheel drive system. This engine deivers a top speed of 155mph and 0-62mph acceleration in just 6.5 seconds. Completing the engine line-up at launch are two five-cylinder turbodiesel engines. The high-performance D5 version features twin turbos to deliver 205bhp and 420Nm of torque, while emitting just 139 g/km (19% BIK). This is enough for a top speed of 146mph and 0-62mph acceleration in an impressive 7.8 seconds. The D3 model uses a single turbocharger to produce 163bhp, which is still enough to take the S60 from 0-62mph in a fraction over nine seconds. STYLE: The design team behind the all-new S60 set out to make it look like a four-door coupe, and they have certainly succeeded. The S60 looks like no other Volvo, with dramatically swooping lines such as the way the C-pillar stretches all the way into the rear light units. The slim, coupe-like roof line is married to a new contour blade on the shoulders on either side of the car. The S60’s athletic stance is accentuated by a sculpted bonnet and short overhangs front and rear to create a look which promises performance. An exterior styling kit can also be included across all models, and is available free of charge on early orders*. DYNAMISM: The S60 has been engineered to drive as well as it looks, which is why every new Volvo S60 comes with a Dynamic chassis as standard which has been designed to give much greater feedback to the driver. Sharper steering and flatter cornering prowess are two of the key advances made in the new S60, important for a car entering the sports-dominated premium small exective saloon market. As well as revisions to the steering, suspension and damping systems, the Dynamic chassis is also available with the FOUR-C active chassis, giving drivers even more control over the car thanks to its range of dynamic settings. *Speak to your dealer or Fleet Sales Specialist

...but we haven’t forgotten the sensible things too, such as safety and economy. that’s why you drive a volvo.
SAFETY: Every Volvo that leaves the factory comes euipped with a raft of features to ensure occupant and pedestrian safety, and the new S60 is no different. With City Safety as standard, the new S60 also offers optional Pedestrian Detection with ground-breaking Full Auto Brake technology. This system uses laser to detect objects in front of the car and determine the distance to it. A camera detects what type of object it is and the system can then decide to bring the S60 to a stop if it decides intervention is needed. Allied to this are Ready Alert Brakes which apply the brakes slightly automatically if the car detects an incident is likely, Hydraulic Brake Assist which can add extra braking force pressure to being the vehicle to a safe stop, and Fading Brake Support, which primes the hydraulic system to ensure the brakes do not fade and lose stopping performance. TECHNOLOGY: The S60 is fitted with Volvo’s Advanced Stability Control. This device can detect skidding at a very early stage and allow the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system to intervene with greater prevision. Also available is Corner Traction Control, a new feature that brakes the car’s inner wheel during cornering while delivering more power to the outer wheel. This so-called ‘torque vectoring’ system allows corners to be taken more tightly while reducing the likelihood of understeer. INSIDE: The S60 looks as sleek inside as it does from the outside. Despite being a five-seater, the S60 has been designed with a driver-oriented cabin of flowing lines around the cockit area. To keep occupants cool is an enhanced Electronic Climate Control system which controls heating and ventilation, while the S60 can also be equipped with an Interior Air Quality System which stops particles and smells from entering the cabin. Other options include a reverse parking camera, an intergrated infotainment system combining stereo, navigation and mobile phone.
06
The all-new Volvo S60 With its sleek four-door coupe styling and new Dynamic chassis, the all-new S60 looks and drives like no other Volvo. But thanks to a range of high efficiency petrol and diesel engines it will also stack-up on the company balance sheet. Styling The new compact premium challenger’s coupe shape makes it sportier and more distinct than any previous Volvo. With a C-pillar stretching all the way back to the tail lights, a contoured bonnet and short overhangs front and rear, the S60’s athletic stance means it stands out in the company car park. Volvo’s designers have also used LED lighting to
create distinctive, signature lights at the front and back that make the car clearly identifiable as an S60. And this sporty appearance can be further enhanced with an exterior styling kit which includes front and rear skid plates, two frames in the lower valance, side scuff plates, exhaust pipe finishers and 18-inch alloy wheels.
Driving Every new Volvo S60 comes with a Dynamic chassis as standard, giving the car the sporty feel and feedback to match its striking design. Compared to the previous model, the steering gear ratio on the all-new S60 is 10% faster to give enhanced feel to the driver, and also a sharper response. A thicker and stiffer steering column also helps increased the feeling of direct contact with the road. The development engineers have also completely revised the suspension system, with stiffer springs and mountings for improved road holding. Meanwhile, the damper mountings
are now made of polyurethane, rather than rubber, to give a better balance between comfort and dynamics. All versions of the S60 can also be ordered with the FOUR-C active chassis, which has been modified and refined for better control and comfort. This is an advanced, self-adjusting chassis system that uses sensors to monitor the car’s behaviour and adjust the damper settings to suit the current driving situation. The driver can also decide on what feel he wants from the car by selecting either Comfort, Sport or Advanced via a button on the centre console.
Engines
At launch the S60 will be available with a choice of three engines: a 3.0-litre T6 four-wheel drive petrol unit and two diesels – the D5 with a 2.4-litre 205bhp twin-turbo engine and a 2.0-litre 163bhp unit in the D3. Further engines will be added during the first year of
production, with a 1.6-litre DRIVe diesel emitting less than 115g/km of CO² and returning 65.7mpg being joined by three more petrols: a 1.6-litre T3 with 150bhp, a T4 version with 180bhp and a 2.0-litre T5 model with 240bhp.

Safety Naturally, safety is a high priority on the all-new Volvo S60 and the model features the ground-breaking City Safety as standard while Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is an option. This system uses radar to detect objects in front of the car and determine the distance to it. A camera detects what type of object it is and the system can then decide to bring the S60 to a stop if it decides intervention is needed.
Technology The S60 is the first saloon on the market with Volvo’s Advanced Stability Control. This device can detect skidding at a very early stage and allow the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system to intervene with greater prevision. The Dynamic chassis also comes with a range of electronic systems to further sharpen the driving experience. Corner Traction Control is a new feature that brakes the car’s inner wheel during cornering while delivering more power to the outer wheel. This so-called ‘torque vectoring’ system allows corners to be taken more tightly while reducing the likelihood of understeer. There is also a host of advanced, integrated braking systems to ensure that stopping distances are as short as possible in all scenarios.
08
Volvo is changing the way its petrol and diesel engines are badged to make it easier for drivers to know which model is which. The process will begin with the all-new S60 range and will then be rolled out across the Volvo line-up. All diesel engines will be badged D followed by a number which denotes which power bracket they are in. The same applies to petrol engines, although these will be prefixed by a T. The aim is to simplify the selection process and make the Volvo range as easy to understand as possible, unlike some other premium brands which have confusing nomenclatures.

volvo puts fleets in pole position 09 Volvo has one of the broadest ranges of cars to offer to fleets thanks to a continuous investment in new technology and models. The massive rate of change in the market means Volvo offers cars ranging from a lower tax C30 Sportscoupe to a sevenseat SUV in the XC90. In between, there are family cars, executive saloons, small crossovers and large estates. All are available with a full range of trim levels – Volvo does not believe that just because a driver wants a lower emission car he or she can not have the option of enjoying a top-specification model with all the luxuries and equipment these bring.
This means that range-topping versions such as the sporty R-DESIGN trim are available across the engine line-up. • Over the following four pages you will find introductions to the core Volvo models in the range, and essential information such as driver taxation, P11D price, CO² emissions, fuel economy and Class 1A National Insurance Contributions.

Volvo has one of the widest ranges of lower emission models available, with DRIVe versions offered on most models. From the ultra-low emission 99g/km C30 DRIVe with Start/Stop to the surprisingly efficient XC60 crossover with just 154g/km, there really is a DRIVe Volvo to suit all budgets. DRIVe variants are available on the C30, S40, V50, S80, V70, XC60 and XC70 ranges, while a DRIVe version of the all-new S60 will be launched later this year. C0² is lowest in range DRIVe TOWARDS ZERO EMISSIONS Volvo has set itself stringent challenges in terms of reducing the emissions from its cars. Following on from the successful DRIVe models which offer outstanding fuel economy and CO² emission levels, Volvo is now working on the next generation of fuel saving technologies. The DRIVe Towards Zero plan will result in average CO² emissions from its range of between 90 and 100g/km of CO² by the year 2020.
New C30 10
C30’s stylish coupe design doesn’t spell high tax bills, especially as the DRIVe model emits just 99g/km of CO2
Volvo’s C30 Sports Coupe brings the best of both words - sporty looks which stand out from the crowd yet fuel economy and CO2 emissions which a supermini would be proud of. The C30 is also well equipped, making it an ideal choice for user-choosers wanting to stand out from the crowd, while for companies the 100% writing-down allowances offered by the DRIVe model make it an ideal choice.

Sub-100g/km cars such as the Volvo C30 DRIVe are the best route to low tax consistency over the next few years

Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling outlined the Government’s plans for vehicles and taxation in the Budget last month. Here’s a round-up of the key issues affecting fleets.
BENEFIT-IN-KIND TAX As the Government continues its drive to get people to choose lower emission vehicles, the benefit-in-kind tax bands for company cars will be tightened. From April 1, 2012 the lowest areas of the tax band chart will change drastically, with only the lowest possible emission vehicles qualifying for a low BIK rating. Currently, cars emitting 120g/km or less qualify for the 10% BIK band (13% for diesels). This will continue through to the end of the 2011/12 tax year. But on April 1, 2012 the 10% banding (13% for diesels) will only apply to cars emitting 99g/km or less. Cars emitting 100 to 104g/km will pay tax based on 11% of the car’s P11D price, emissions of 105 to 109g/km will pay 12% BIK, etc (see table for full listings). At the top end of the table, the maximum emissions for the 35% banding drop by 5g/km every year. The Government also announced a special rate for cars emitting between 1 and 75g/km of CO². These cars will be taxed at 5% for petrols and 8% for diesels. Class 1A National Insurance Contributions remained unchanged in the Budget at 12.8%. This means that companies providing vehicles to staff, benefit from lower tax charges if the vehicles have low emissions. An example of this is the Volvo C30 DRIVe ES Start/Stop model – with CO² emissions of 99g/km it results in Class 1A NIC payments of just £203 per annum.

SHOWROOM TAX From April 1, 2010 new car buyers are set to be hit by more costs with the introduction of a one-off first year ‘showroom tax’. The ‘showroom tax’ is a way of charging extra money on those cars that are the most polluting. Currently cars that have emissions of more than 255g/km of CO² have to pay £440 a year in road tax. However, from April anyone buying a new car with these emissions will have to pay £950 in the first year. This will then drop down to the increased yearly tax cost of £455. Any car in tax bands H and above will have to pay more in the first-year tax than they would with the annual road tax.
