Sports city of Olympiastadion_Berlin_Germany Task: masterplan near the Olympiastadion and the design of hotel/Spa complex Context : Master Thesis_2011_Tutor: Prof. Sergio Crotti

The project area is located just in front of the Olympiastadion in Berlin, one of the few remaining historical sites of Nazi architecture. The aim of the project it, thus, to create a place which would be charged with a deep sense of history - containing a dialectical juxtaposition of Nazi and contemporary values. In order to read the meaning which the Olympiastadion was intended to convey, the semantics expressed by the original Nazi architecture have been analyzed and successively de-semanticized in order to be rewritten, regenerated and made to also contain the contrasting contemporary values. In the end, the place becomes more than just a sports citadel framed by the beautiful nature along the river Havel and the Murellenberg forest: it tells a story about the past and the present of contemporary German history.

Sports city of Olympiastadion_Berlin_Germany

The tower of Labyrinth is a contemporary equivalent to the traditional tower, of the regime of despotism, which was inaccessible, enclosed and built to be shown and not to be entered and experienced. Three towers conceived, therefore, are HABITABLE as a mean of redefining semantically the meaning of existing towers. Two of them are embedded in the hotel and Wellness complex, containing affine functions; the first tower, including business rooms, conferences, several apartments in the top, offices, and the winter garden. The second tower, including sports centre, spa-related offices, restaurants and snacks, and once more the winter garden, connected right away with the other one in the other tower, w hich dictates the new horizon of hotel complex, while providing new perspective. And the third tower, so-called the tower of vertical Labyrinth, contains the related exhibitions and art shows.

Library & Mediateque_Bovisa, Milan_Italy Task: library design with the theme of social integration Context : Politecnico di Milano_2008

The population of immigrants living in Bovisa, rather deserted periphery of Milan, was observed and interrogated from social point of view, resulting not being integrated in Italian society in general. The critical question was “would certain architecture be able to contribute to social integration?” The site was chosen near the main station of Bovisa, intending to take a role of enzyme for further transformation around the station.

The main concept for the library building lies in the very continuation of that of the whole complex, “flowing” spaces in the library itself. There is no grandiose entrance; rather, there are several entrances for main rooms. This library itself, however, succeeds to create its introspective character by having high walls.

ground floor plan_foyer_restaurant

level 7 m plan_auditorium, winter garden The building site is collocated in the threshold between high density urban area and the southern park. Therefore the east and west elevation represents symbolically such diversification and integration between these two different areas. The theme of sustainability was confronted in a way that the whole interior raumplan permits to have maximum natural light, and the southern facade is constituted of photovoltaic cells.

The south elavation is dealt with the double facade with photovoltaic panels, meanwhile the north one equiped with metal facade, giving differentiated material density by controlling the dimensions of holes. Winter garden, which is conceived as the integrated part of continuous promenade of the whole building, is realized with concrete framing structure in order to facillitate the natural illumination.

Amber Baltic Garden Residence_Miedzyzdroje_Poland Task: Project design phase_Team work_interior design, technical drawings, schematic design and visualization Context : Professional internship_Zvi Hecker Architekten, Berlin_2008

Zvi Hecker’s architecture is characterized by generating space by means of strict geometric regularities and paradoxically the complexity obtained by them. In this project of residential blocks and Hotel/Spa center in Baltic, the embracing form of all stacked terraces creates such sublime atmosphere, confronting with the see landscape in front. Section shows furthermore such a dynamic spatial configuration created inside of the building.

The existing building site used to be the main office for National socialism. The competition asks for Documentation centre of Nationalsocialism. The project wants to show symbolically the unity between the past and now, between incompatible ideologies beneath. The central entrance collects all possible accesses to different parts of exhibition and documentation rooms, with zenith light.

Turistic village_Sciacca_Sicily_Italy Task: Collaboration in project design, executive drawings, and documentation Context : junior architect_PGLF architectural office, Milan_2009

The main idea of this project comes from the direct relation to the topography of the area, the sinuous and soft line of territory. As the section of the whole touristic village complex shows, each house unit of quite reduced dimension is simply “put, following the existing topographical line. As a result, such a dynamic movement of volumes and colors is created. The house is designed not for living inside, but for living outside, since it will be used for the summer season in Sicily. School renovation competition_Rumi school_India

Task: Developing innovative design solutions to upgrade and expand existing classroom environments in high-density urban settings in India Context: Competition_PGLF architectural studio, Milan_2009_Special nomination for prize

India is a very country, where it rains a lot. As a mean of sustainable use of natural element, we wanted to bring also the element of “water to the building itself by using semi-transparent water plastic containers, which are very cheap. It would collect raining water for eventual utilization of toilet water. This kind of cover, which we designed, would consent the children to still hear the sound of raining, while establishing very strong relation with the nature of this area.

The existing Rumi school in India, due to its extremely high density of the cities, the building typology demonstrates such disadvantage that most of them lacks the natural light and ventilation, and due to the typical climate of region, the humidity problem is not avoidable. They launched the international competition for school renovation competition for cheap, sustainable architecture. Beyond the budget problem, we launched our project with the following statement: The school should be a place for learning, learning is always the first step for further opportunities of life and therefore it is necessary to find a way to inhale certain spirituality to our schools.

By folding the internal partition walls, which is made of wood frame and thick paper egg container fixed in between, with hinge-pivot integrated, this wood frame folds itself upwards so that the whole space becomes united easily. The problem of sound-proofing between different classrooms is resolved by this egg-container material, which simply absorbs effectively the sounds from all the directions.

The existing building is quite deprived of enough natural light and ventilation due to their longitudinal development up to 30 meters, inserted in dense urban situation with walls closing the whole structures. While we are asked to maintain the existent columns, we propose the solution of vertical shifting between different floors in the middle

The project area is constituted of two parts: The northern part is currently set to the agriculture and confined to the prison to the north-west direction, while the east part, by industrial areas, the hospital complex and residential area. The northern part of the project area is identified as a place for Expo 2015, mainly because it is tangently confined with the most important railway hubs and highways and also located in the suburban area in the proximity to the Rho fair. The masterplan projects tries to relate the current location of project area not only with the surrounding area, but with the city itself, in terms of its function in the near future, in other words, in a wider territorial scale.

Concept of archipelago_unity of complex the modern idea about urbanization based on the zoning, the territorial division according to functions, has produced such a strict seperation of human activity. Passing through the post industrial era, we realize that we need another way of urbanization based on the hybridization and organicity. The project is developed with the idea of “complex unity, including public services, with the dimension of 150-200 m.

Requalification of historical center in Stuttgart_Germany Task: Urban planning_Masterplan Context : Competition_Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany_2008

medieval structure connection Due to the “Stuttgart 21” project, that promises the new strong urban area in the northern part of Central station and the new station project together with Kulturmeile, the real city center would be shifted to the north. Nevertheless, the historical center of one city should always proclaim its uniqueness. The presence of City hall and its pathway to two churches (the one on the northwest, the other on the east) with historically meaningful perspectives, and in the southeast, small historical structures were the elements to be connected. The giant shopping malls (Breuniger Karlstadt, Kaufhof) are located in the “historical ring”, becoming to function as an entrance to the historical center. historical ring as access points porosity through continous public spaces

Restoration of Basilica Sant’Eustorgio_ Milan_Italy Task: restoration and reorganization of the complex of Basilia, interior design Context: Restoration laboratory, Milan_2010

General plan of the site

Dialogue between the old and the new: inclusion and esclusion

Interior organization_ exhibition room This project was about the relationship between the old and the new, how the new can be nicely intergrated to the prestigious religous building. Since the typical typology of two courtyards of this historical complex, the restoration project wants to keep and reinforce the very structure in terms of its interior organization. The theme of inclusion and exclusion between the old and the new is adopted, the new structure will be of light metallic material based with wooden pavement.

House interior renovation_Sciacca_Sicily_Italy Task: Interior and furniture design Context: junior architect_PGLF architectural office in Milan_clients “Ducimascolo_2009

Provided that the house consisted of considerable surface, we wanted to create the spatial continuity through light, radically changing the existing rigid spatial division. We demolished the existing non-supporting walls, while maintaining only the slabs, creating fluid-shape wall, in a way that the light from the balcony can get totally through all the longitudinal section of the house. Secondly we wanted to design furnitures, such as bookshelves, as a part of the whole interior space. Those furniture have the theme of scattered diafram, playing with the light and therefore, generating interesting shadows.

Coffee maker for young generation Context : KAIST_South Korea_2004 Keywords: compact, easy to use, fun to watch, personalizable

Target and user Small and compact coffee maker of the workers used in the office, in the age of 25~35). Keywords Compact, Fun to watch, convenient to use, Personalization of taste and coffee maker itself Possible phase for the product Linger over your coffee, which will fulfil your taste, in your hands as long as you want while working in the office! Problem: “Using coffee maker bothers me!” Solution: To make “the action” of making coffee (the way of using it) fun. To design “the appearance” of coffee maker itself specific and peculiar so that it can be focused in the office space, never to be some bothering product, but some product that one want to be interested in and care for. To “get rid of unnecessary component” in the product itself in order to save some work space since it cannot be something to disrupt working. Therefore, these three solutions had become my design requirements.
