25 YEARS 50 STATES
A broader view through heritage
A brief history The idea of the European Heritage Days was launched in Granada (Spain) on 3 October 1985, during the Second Conference of European Ministers responsible for Architectural Heritage of the Council of Europe. On that occasion, the French Minister of Culture suggested that the “Monuments Open Doors” scheme launched in France in 1984 should be extended to other European countries. Several countries such as the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Malta, Belgium, the United Kingdom (Scotland) and Sweden soon set up similar events. In 2010 the European Heritage Days celebrate their 25th Anniversary. Since their launch at European level, the Days have taken on new significance every year. The 50 States parties to the Council of Europe’s European Cultural Convention are invited to take part in the European Heritage Days, which are more and more popular with the public and have become a fixture on the member States’ annual cultural calendars. In 1999, they became a joint action of the Council of Europe and the European Commission. The programme of the European Heritage Days was reoriented and revitalised in 2008 to give a stronger European dimension to the initiative. The European Heritage Forum “Heritage
and Dialogue” was the first in a new series of high-level international events with the aim of communicating about the cultural heritage in Europe (Brussels, 23-24 October 2008). The second Forum took place in 2009 in Ljubljana (Slovenia) on the theme “Heritage, Creativity and Innovation” during the Slovenian chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers. The third Forum on “Cultural Heritage, Participation, Prosperity” will be held in Istanbul (Turkey) – the European Capital of Culture in 2010.
The aims of the European Heritage Days are to: make citizens aware of Europe’s cultural diversity and wealth; create a climate conducive to intercultural dialogue and appreciation of the rich mosaic of European cultures; combat racism and xenophobia, encourage greater tolerance in Europe across national borders and enhance the sense of belonging among all Europeans;
European events on the occasion of the European Heritage Days The Third European Heritage Forum, organised as part of the 25th Anniversary of the European Heritage days in Istanbul on 1-2 October 2010 on “Cultural Heritage, Participation, Prosperity” will contribute to the 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. It will bring together a large circle of professionals and specialists from both within and outside Europe, making it the third in a series of annual “crossroads” of cultural heritage specialists in Europe. The Forum will be followed by the annual meeting of the National Coordinators who will take stock of the past 25 years and make proposals for the future.
The 50 States parties to the Council of Europe’s European Cultural Convention (1954) Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Holy See, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russian Federation, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, “the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom.
inform the public and the political authorities of the need to protect cultural heritage from new threats; encourage Europe to respond to the social, political and economic challenges it faces. The success of the European Heritage Days is possible thanks to increasingly broader views on heritage, to the effective international coordination associating the Council of Europe and the European Union and to the work carried out with the Group of National Coordinators.
