The Differences between Lativ and Uniqlo

C

lothes are one of the necessary daily products for each person. Even men or women go shopping; they mostly enjoy buying new and pretty clothes. For some women, wearing apparels are more important than eating in their lives. They are willing to spend money

on clothes instead of purchasing food and commodities. However, for common people, it is impossible to buy expensive clothes of famous brands generally. Therefore, recently, there have been a lot of attractive brands selling inexpensive garments, such as Lativ and Uniqlo. Between these two brands with fair price clothes, Uniqlo is a better choice than Lativ in my mind.

First, Lativ and Uniqlo have different backgrounds as well as reasons to start their

fair price clothes business. Lativ is a local brand of Taiwan while Uniqlo comes from Japan, and each of them has their own business success stories. Take Lativ for example. Lativ was originally called Mego, and it w as a media company. The boss, Richard Chang, decided to make the transition of his company seven years ago, and then invested NT$10 million to set up Taiwan's first original brand apparel manufacturer merchandised exclusively on-line. The reason why they changed the name into “Lativ” was that they think “life should be attractive in various ways.” At the same time, it is the abbreviation of Lativ. Besides, the boss also hoped that by creating a clothes company, he could help promote Taiwanese garment industry. More Taiwanese people would get more opportunities to work, so most of clothes in Lativ were made in Taiwan. However, because of the high cost, they moved their factories to mainland China. The clothes are made in China now. This way makes Lativ give up their goal to help Taiwan, and makes consumers lose faith in Lativ, too. On the contrary, Uniqlo was originally a small clothes store, but it sold men’s suits. Later, the boss, Tadashi Yanai, had an idea that he wanted his clothes store to be like a bookstore which made people shop relaxingly. Next, in May 1985, he opened a unisex casual wear store in Hiroshima under the name "Unique Clothing Warehouse". It was at this time that the name "Uniqlo" was born, as a contraction of "unique clothing". During the process of the business, the boss had encountered many difficulties and failures. The initial business was not successful as he thought, yet he never gave it up. He said, “Before one success, you need to fail nine times.” Finally, he learned the lessons from the failures, and became very successful. Between Lativ and Uniqlo, I think Uniqlo is better because Lativ did not assure their customers with the origin of the clothes and their original intention.

Second, when you see the pictures of the clothes from Lativ and Uniqlo, you can find

out that their clothes are in unlike styles. On Lativ’s website, the clothes look simple and natural. Most of the wearing apparels are T-shirts and jeans. This is a choice for those

25

people who like to wear casually. Sometimes, there are cute and special T-shirts with cartoon characters. The T-shirts would be appealing for kids or students rather than adults. On the other hand, Uniqlo is more fashionable and various. In different seasons, they will change the clothes’ types. For example, they prefer to collaborate with other famous brand designers, magazines, and super stars like Pharrell Williams. In this way, people can spend less money to buy the surprising products. They also have a specific name for their T-shirts called “UT”. The T-shirts are not only cool but also comfortable to wear. Their UTs are the easiest T-shirts that I have ever worn. What’s best, the clothes of Uniqlo are durable. For customers, though their prices are both inexpensive, the fashion style and wearing value of clothes are more significant, so Uniqlo is a greater choice than Lativ.

Third, Lativ and Uniqlo have their own marketing strategies to attract people to

purchase their products. Lativ focuses on two ways as their features. One is letting consumers shop on the Internet; the other is their convenient methods of paying money. For instance, if you want to buy clothes of Lativ, the only way you can find the clothes is surfing on the Internet and shopping online. Lativ does not have a real clothes store because they think modern people are so busy that they do not have time to shop on the street. Besides, they offer a service that people can pay on delivery, which an easy method for customers to pay. The customers do not need to go to post office to remit money. They just choose the nearest convenience store and wait for 3 to 5 days. Then, they can get their new clothes, but, by doing so, we cannot try on the clothes and the clothes may be worse than the pictures on the Internet. Contrarily, Uniqlo takes more creative strategies to catch customers’ attention. When the season changes, there will be a big discount of the products. Most of the clothes can be more inexpensive than usual. This is really a great attraction for the buyers and a good way to earn more money. Plus, Uniqlo also creates some interesting online tools for people to use like “Uniqlo calendar or clock.” However, they are not just a normal calendar and clock. There are the pictures of Uniqlo’s clothes on them. Therefore, as we use the tools, we can know when the new style in clothes appears. We may be appealed by those commercials as well as pictures, and we will go to buy the clothes. It seems that Uniqlo’s strategies are much more appealing than Lativ’s and more effective for consumers.

To sum up, the clothes of Uniqlo are better than Lativ because Uniqlo’s background,

styles and strategies are more attracting and vogue. While it is true that Lativ is our local brand, the quality of Uniqlo’s clothes is greater, fashionable, and comfortable. Next time if you hesitate which clothes to buy between these two fair prices brands, Uniqlo must be the right choice for you.

My Inspiration in the Summer Camp

T

his summer, I decided to join a camp to make my life more colorful. This camp is to help children learn the manners or some knowledge about Buddhism happily. I went to be a volunteer to accompany the children and enhance myself. During the summer camp, I

also learned two important lessons: being more patient and being brave. The first lesson I learn in the camp is to be patient to everyone. Before the camp for children started, all the volunteers had needed to be trained for three days. Most of the volunteers I met surprised me that being patient was significant and admiring. They were polite, and they always wore a smile on their face, which really made me appreciate them. They kindly taught me something I did not know until I understood. Therefore, I felt warm and pleased in the camp. Besides the nice volunteers, there were a few Buddhist masters who were gentle and respected. The masters trained us to improve our ideas and personalities. They not only told us the stories but also showed us interesting videos about life significance of treasuring every relationship and being nice to each person. Then, when a master made a speech, I was touched by his words because what he said totally changed my thought. The master told about the painstaking of our parents to raise us as well as how happy and comfortable we live. I had previously been an irritable person who yelled at my parents or angry at my friends as I was in a bad mood. At the moment of the speech, I began to feel regretful and repent. Since then, I have made up my mind to be more patient and never lost my temper anytime. The training of the summer camp absolutely altered me for a better and patient person. Becoming courageous is the other thing I learn from the summer camp. I used to be shy, timid, and scared of the crowd. Every time I went on the stage, my hands and legs could not help but keep trembling. In the camp, we had to choose a host in the first program for the children. No one offered to be the host. All of a sudden, I volunteered to be a hostess and desired to challenge it. A lot of people encouraged me with applause. After that, I took my courage to get the microphone and went on the stage. At first, I was so nervous and afraid that I wanted to hide. My hands were shaking. Speaking in front of three hundred people was quite scaring. After introducing the master, I rushed off the stage and took a deep breath. However, I kept telling myself not to be shocked, and regarded every audience as my family as well as my friends. When I stood on the stage again, it was amazing that I was relaxed instead of being nervous. Later, I could speak easily and fluently in front of so many people. Speaking in public is not a big problem for me anymore. This experience made me become brave and aroused my courage to challenge things I am scared in my life.

27

Thanks to the summer camp, I learned two lessons that will influence me forever;

one is to be more patient, and the other is to be courageous. Both being patient and being courageous are extremely useful for me, and help me be different from the one that I was before. I believe that I will never forget the experience and the inspirations of this summer camp which changed my personalities throughout my whole life.
