THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF SILVER WINGS INTERNATIONAL, INC.
Fall 2019
From Our President
W
ell, Ladies and Gents, WE DID IT! We pulled off the largest Silver Wings Convention ever! Let’s hear it for The TWA Hotel at JFK! The Terminal was resplendent, all dressed in white, and bedecked with sparkling people in all of its spaces! Over 1000 of us and our friends and relatives filled our events to capacity and then some! The Hotel was sold out for four days and bar bills were the highest ever! Traveling to the Flight 800 Memorial and the Cradle of Aviation one day, followed by a luncheon cruise of lower Manhattan on a Hornblower ship that rocked its way through the harbor to the strains of “I Will Survive” and the pounding of a thousand dancing feet, we celebrated for four days of power-packed fun and friendship. Saturday was a triple header from hearing Tyler Morse’s personal tale of the TWA Hotel, followed by an afternoon of pure fun and professional photography, and culminating in our Banquet. Are we returning; you bet...next time with napkins and water glasses! Thanks to the New York Committee, it was a whirlwind of fun, renewed friendships and love.
Oh! Greetings and gladness and hugs and air kisses, Upon every arrival each friend reminisces, As we enter a building that long has been dark, Which is now recognized as a world-class landmark, Its talons touch earth and its wings are unfurled, It is never aloft yet it showed us the world, For it led us to flight; Up Up and Away! On the airline we all loved... TWA!

Friends touching friends once roommates and the good times never end. Mothers and daughters fly across the country to New York to attend. Good food and drinks eagerly consumed and that is not a major sin. We are back here today where long ago our TWA careers did begin. Our hearts beat faster when we saw the newly fashioned TWA Inn. We mourned those on Flight 800 not here but in heaven’s kingdom. We applauded those volunteers who work to keep up the site often. Their dedication is unmatched and we are grateful to those men and women. Even though we shed a tear or many we left with much pride. We ventured to the pier for a wonderdful Hudson River boat ride. The food was splendidly enjoyed so we put calorie counting aside. We danced to the 60’s music and hoped our aching muscles to hide. Mr. Tyler Morse made our business meeting surprisingly exciting. We usually get informed of matters but not with the presentation so inviting. We were enthralled to hear the details of the TWA Hotel plighting. We give a big shoutout to the creators and their wise insight. The Banquet brought our celebration to an end for us to dine. We were impressed that so many attended though it made for long lines. We are grateful to our SWI Board for hard work which was sublime. They are without peer for their efforts with no pay to still shine. Poem by “Twassy Twain” aka Ludie McIntosh

Thank you, Tyler, for your inspiration, your vision, and your willingness to undertake this monumental task to renovate and restore our Eero Saarinen designed TWA Terminal at JFK. Living through the painful effects of a corporate raider, we lost our jobs, suffered division in the ranks, endured several Chapter 11 bankruptcies, grieved over lost friends in Flight 800, and with the nation in the aftermath of 9/11, and finally in 2001 watched as the doors closed on our lives. TWA was our life, and this Terminal, a welcome beacon…a home away from home. You have restored one of the few reminders that we ever existed, and have thus lifted our spirits. Knowing that new generations will learn the story of TWA, a once great worldwide airline, helps us bring our part in this history to a satisfactory conclusion. Thank you.

Kaye’s CORNER
Interview with Judie Whitney By Kaye Juhl
J
udie Whitney was first hired in 1957. Judie had lived in Boston when she initially interviewed along with 350 young women. She had two sorority sisters from college encouraging her to leave her job as a social worker and join them at TWA and their apartment in Jackson Heights. The gentleman doing the hiring abruptly told her to “stop” as she entered, “let me see those legs.” She complied and lifted her skirt slightly above her knees. He also wanted to “see the hair hidden beneath the hat.” He questioned, “what her boyfriend thought of her traveling and being away from home.” She was asked to return with 49 other prospective employees the next day and was one of the two chosen. Her first trips were on Martins where she worked alone hanging coats, taking names and drink orders (alcohol had not been introduced on board yet). She would offer orange juice and coffee boarded in large metal containers. The coffee switch had to be turned on early to have hot coffee on the flight. On a first flight, the orange juice container was inadvertently switched “on” causing the orange juice to heat up and the coffee to remain cold! A major rule change took effect late in 1957 that gave former hostesses grounded by marriage a chance to return on a permanent basis, providing they could meet the other requirements. Having been forced to resign when she married, Judie requested an interview and re-applied for a position with TWA after divorcing. In 1961, Judie received a pass to fly to Kansas City for an interview. The hiring team agreed to “have a look” but warned that they usually did not consider “divorcees.” Judie was re-hired and re-trained with a stern warning that she would have to resign again when she turned 32. Previously she had been on Martins and Connies. This time she was among the first flight attendants to be trained on the Convair 880. Since they were the only flight attendants qualified on the aircraft, the entire class was “frozen” and remained in place until more could be trained.
Judie Whitney - Palau, Micronesia 2018
When she thought back to some of the challenges of the job, she remembered a big problem came when food choice options arrived. Having “fish on Friday” was a short-lived concept. Another thing that was dropped after a short time was the language requirement on the Pacific flights. When she transferred to Los Angeles international, priority was given to flight attendants who were fluent in an
Judie Whitney - Enroute from Honolulu to Guam - 1973

Asian language. The vast number of dialects were impossible to cover for the “language of destination” requirement, so the rule was eventually dropped. Judie loved flying the Pacific routes! Then TWA offered a “$102 around the world first class ticket,” so she took her husband and left for 6 weeks! Judie had married an avid scuba diver. Although she was comfortable snorkeling, she needed to conquer her fear of being under water before also becoming a competent diver. Jim and Judie have been diving in many places around the world including Honduras, the Red Sea, Truk Lagoon and their favorite repeat trips to Palau. Two years ago, Judie’s husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. A recent cruise with a team specializing in Alzheimer’s disease on board Holland America out of Fort Lauderdale was such a positive experience that Judie plans on going again next year. The Alzheimer’s lectures covered everything from motor skills and caregiver concerns to financial issues. Connecting with others in the group of 30 and the attention given to her husband was monumental. Judie and Jim have been married 55 years. During the start of her flights out of LAX, Judie and her dog needed a place to call home. Through a message board she found Gay Schneiderman and her cat. They were roommates for 5 years adding other 4-legged animals to the mix. Gay and Judie were roommates once again during SWI convention in New York. Judie had so much respect and pride working for TWA and working with other employees who, like herself, truly cared. Judie retired in July 1985...“before everything hit the fan!” Today she lives in Southern California with her husband and two dogs. 19

Welcome Letter from Jovanna Brown Kline
Dear Silver Wings International Flight Attendants and Guests, Welcome to the Big Apple, New York City: home base of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the United Nations. MAY 15, 2020 will be the cutoff date for receipt of pictures & articles for the next newsletter. *Please email photos to laweise93@yahoo.com in Large/”Actual” size with a HIGH resolution and include names when possible.
2019 Board of Directors President Beth Holcombe Vice President Katie Norvell Secretary Valerie Roffe Treasurer Stephanie Byrne
Welcome to John F. Kennedy International Airport, the New York hub for TWA flights to Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as its extensive domestic route structure. Welcome to the iconic TWA Flight Center, designed by Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962, the beginning of the Jet Age. It is the only aviation terminal which looks remarkably like a bird in flight with its wings spread fully and its legs trailing behind. It is no wonder that it was declared a New York City landmark in 1994 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. How appropriate that this magnificent structure was saved and restored and has become all that remains, in New York City, of our once mighty airline. Welcome to the resurrection of TWA in New York City: the spectacular new TWA Hotel which occupies the totally refurbished and landmarked structure, JFK’s first on-site hotel. The Flight Center was closed in 2001 when TWA was integrated into American Airlines, and the building and the airline began to fade into the dustbin of history. We all owe a huge “thank you” to MCR and Morse Development for their vision of restructuring our famous terminal and rebuilding it into the TWA Hotel. This unique hotel has not only preserved our terminal but has restored the memory of our once great airline. While discussing memories, don’t forget to make a reservation for a drink in the most beautiful aircraft ever created: the restored TWA Constellation. Welcome to your past: to relive, to remember, to reacquaint yourself with the best years of your life in the best job anyone could dream of. Each of you was a star: a Flight Attendant for TWA, “Airline of the Stars.”
