D*School Crash Course

This project involved engaging with a real person in order to create a prototype of their problem. It was at first a challenge to open up to a complete stranger on one’s thoughts and opinions, but since it was such a fast pace project one had to open up willingly and quickly. This project also showed how it is tow feel when presenting unfinished work to someone trying to explain what it is supposed to be, but also gaining input of what could make it better and more effective. This project surprised me of how beneficial it is to understand other people’s ideas and advise to use in your own project. I disliked how fast pace it was because my mind was going in a million directions I could not settle on one piece of the work, but only focus on the whole.

I would go back and look deeper into the little details that can be emphasized more. I would also get more feedback to create a stronger piece of prototype as well as share my findings with other classmates to gain even more advice that could help in the future with projects. Ultimately, this project showed that fast pace can be good just to get started thinking and simulating ideas that one will grow and expand into something exciting.

Dot/Line This project was based on precision and perfection. The objectives were to create four compositions that would describe the four chosen words, but with limited combinations of dot and line. It was important to have multiple iterations in order to gain a better sense of the word that gives it meaning and clarity. This project was also to gain a better understanding of value, scale, line and visual hierarchy, in other words to put one’s own meaning into the compositions. The perfection comes at the end, where one must present a stunning final product that is both clean and comprehensive.

There were many difficulties that I had faced, but through them I believe I created strong and powerful work. My first task was to decide which words I could relate to more and decide how those words can be translated into dots and lines. Upon choosing the words, I found a basic definition to reference from. Then from there I just started drawing as well as placing dots and lines on paper that would bring out the meaning of the words. Once I have one I approve, I take it one step further by looking at different ways I can twist and turn the dots and lines. This helps to get at the best possible solution for the outcome. The biggest but best challenge was the limitations within the project. This allowed one to stick to the parameters, but also demonstrate the wide range of versatility within those limitations. This project gave me another way to look deeper into words and arrangements and how the slightest movement can change an entire meaning.

Expressive Text The expressive text project was harder than I thought it would have been. The objectives were to use a variety of hand letterings that create deeper meaning of ones chosen word. Another objective was to generate multiple iterations in order to produce amazing work. The final product must be presented in a well-crafted manner to show professionalism and dedication for ones works.

This project had many challenges, first being finding a deeper meaning of my word ‘melt’ and describing it only in typography. This was a challenge due to the my ability to express a word only using words. The next step was to create a mind map that finds words to describe ‘melt’ further. This also helps establish a better understanding of ‘melt’ in order to express it successfully. Then it is all about creating many iterations that gives one a wide variety of solutions in order to narrow it down to modify the best ones.

This project is based on trail and error and how I was able to overcome obstacles in order to get the best solution possible. Another challenge was having so many ideas in my head, but when I illustrated them and/or created them they were not how I expected them to turn out. Crayon melting and ink were fun things to do because of the way they dripped down, which creates a natural look that could or could not be intentional. I definitely wish I created more natural looking products in order to get at the best representation of the word melt. If I had to do anything different I would have looked even deeper into the word and gathered insight from peers of what the word meant to them.

Final Product

Object Iteration This project was based on creativity and uniqueness. The objectives were to incorporate different types of media to create your specific object or animal, mine being the Siberian tiger. This project enabled range that gives someone leverage to create something to set him or her apart from the rest. By incorporating different medias, allows one to be unique and show versatility that they can use any media and still create amazing work. Another objective was to create an understanding through surprising illustrations that signify one’s object or animal. This project was able to challenge yet acknowledge one’s ability to create new perspectives and ultimately showing one’s creativity that follows the standards.

The challenges within this project came from getting different perspectives of the Siberian tigers. I first experimented with only working with the head and used different medias to get at that task. The tasks were to create a continuous line, master artist, collage, typographic collage, and geometric verses of the Siberian tiger.

I started with the continuous line, where I emphasized the most common qualities of the Siberian tiger. Practice makes improvements because of the technique of not allowing the pen to lift from the paper; therefore I constantly was able to draw until they were what I wanted them to look like.

Next I proceeded to my master artists, where I chose three and mimicked their style of art. I chose Banksy, who uses spray paint and stencils, Eric Carle, who does uses tissue paper, and Olly Moss who uses creates images through silhouettes. These enabled me to use their techniques, but still throw my own twist on things and that I really enjoyed.

I combined the collages, which was challenging to get at the shape of the tiger along with the stripes. I think the typographic played a unique role for the black lettering to represent the stripes well. I also enjoyed creating texture within the paper that showed the fluffy face.

Finally, the geometric focused on the face because I felt that would be the best representation of the Siberian tiger. This allowed the intensity to show throughout the eyes and how violent these animals can be. Looking back I wish I did more creations of the whole animal to get at the size and beauty of these animals as well as the fierceness within their faces.

Children’s Book The Children’s Book was both a pleasure and pain to work with. I had the opportunity to have two authors, which gave me experience working with other people. My authors were amazing and believed in my ability to turn their stories into something amazing. This also helped me to be confident and motivated in order to show they what I am all about and how I would not let them down. The objectives were clear and precise; ultimately create an excellent book that draws one in, have relevant images based on the text, and finally respond to the author’s thoughts and insights.

The challenges throughout book of my books were just getting my drawings done. I definitely support seeing the artist hand within any work and that was what I wanted to show throughout my stories. This gives it a more playful and child like feel being able to see every stroke of the colored pencil. It also gave me a sense of what it is like to be a kid again, wanting to draw and color to express how talented one is.

She could walk on the moon and soar past stars through space.

When the game was over, she talked to one of the players and asked them what the game was called. “Rugby!,” the girl said. Genevieve asked if she was STRONG and FAST and TOUGH enough to play. The girl told her, “Anyone is welcome to play this sport. FAST, SLOW, BIG, SMALL! Any girl who wants to step on the field is welcome to play with us.”

From that day forward, Genevieve was a STRONG, FAST, and TOUGH rugby player who never let anyone tell her she wasn’t good enough to play.

Vivian’s Adventure

Vivian’s Adventure was a very engaging book because of all the fun activities Vivian did through out it. It also gave children the sense of how fun reading can be if they can go through adventures like that. My author based her story on her cousin who has blond hair and blue eyes and I strongly supported her wishes. I enjoyed working with someone because if I am not sure about how to envision a scene the other person might have any idea or vice versa.

Genevieve and the Rugby Ball Genevieve and the Rugby Ball was an encouraging book for girls to be independent and able to do what boys can do. This book I wanted to make it realistic, but in a playful way. I turned Genevieve into a strong and tough girl who was not getting told she could not play football because she was a girl and therefore she found rugby. My author was a former rugby player, who had total confidence in my artist ability and told me to go crazy. This book I had fun creating these images and demonstrate that it does not matter one’s size or shape as long as they have heart and passion.

Genevieve and the Rugby Ball Written by Kelli Piatt Illustrated by: Jill Kleiman

This is Genevieve. She is STRONG and FAST and TOUGH.

As Genevieve walked home sad, she passed a field where some girls were playing a strange game. They were LIFTING people up, and RUNNING down the field, and TACKLING with no pads!

Genevieve wanted to play football like her brothers did, but the coach told her, “You can’t play! You’re a girl! You’re just not STRONG or FAST or TOUGH enough, and I don’t want to see you get hurt.”

As Genevieve watched, she realized that these girls were STRONG and FAST and TOUGH, just like her! Genevieve had to play this sport!
