from the editor I remember six months ago putting the Mary Valley Voice together when hundreds of Mary River fans and families gathered for the third canoe flotilla, I thought that was very special and I couldn’t imagine that six month down the track the battle would be over. The best thing about the end of this battle is that we won! a win over what could have been a disaster. Now I wish that all the people in the Mary Valley who have been fighting for so long will keep organising such great events to celebrate natures’ beauty, to celebrate our beautiful Mary River! This is truly Christmas in November! Laetitia Hoffmann

hristmas is just around the corner – one month to go. Kenilworth Post Office is gearing up to meet all your Christmas needs – postage of course, best way to send presents, and a wide range of “value for money” gift ideas. Postage Rates: Australia Post has again introduced a reduced postage rate for “Christmas Card only” letters. For a standard sized card, it is 50 cents (instead of the normal 55 cents) and for large cards the postage is $1.00 (instead of the normal $1.10). International “card only” letters will cost $1.25 to post. International stamps are GST free and therefore you should not use Domestic stamps (which include GST) on International letters or parcels. Special Christmas stamps are now on sale. 2009 Annual Stamp Album of Australian stamps is now on sale for $99.95. This represents good value as you not only receive all the stamps issued by Australia during the past year, but also the full story behind each stamp issue. Letters to Santa Claus: It is also time to start helping the youngsters in the community think about what presents they would like to ask Santa to bring them for Christmas. Santa has a special address again this year – Santa Claus, North Pole, Post Code 9999. If your child is sending a letter to Santa, remember to put a full name (including surname) as well as a full return address on the back of the envelope. It is also important to put a stamp on the front of the envelope. Remember that Santa receives a lot of mail just before Christmas and there is obviously more than one Michael or Robyn in the world. If the full name and address of the sender is on the back, then it is highly likely that Santa might find time to send back a postcard.

Post Office has a range of Gift Cards available including Sanity, Sports Girl, Birch Carroll and Coyle, as well as Rebel Sports. If there isn’t a Gift Card that is suitable, consider sending a Money Order – they can be cashed at any Post Office or be deposited into bank accounts. Finally as we head into the Christmas season, I would like to remind our customers that the mail leaves Kenilworth each weekday at 5pm. Articles posted by 12.30pm on Saturdays will also be collected by a mail truck over the weekend. Robyn, Michael and family extend to all their best wishes for the Christmas season and look forward to seeing you in 2010. Kenilworth Post Office is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 8.30am to 12pm.

Remembrance day 2009

t 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the postwar years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in war. The Service on 11/11/2009 in Kenilworth drew a larger crowd than normal when the diminishing ranks of locals who pause to pay tribute to the fallen were swelled by two groups camping at the showgrounds and some passing motorcyclists to observe the time of silence and the lowering of the flag to half mast. Lenore Meldrum

Gifts: Kenilworth Post Office has a wide selection of gifts available for all ages. As we are a Licensed Post Office, we offer a wider range of gifts than just those from the Australia Post catalogue. Our motto has always been good quality at a low price. Santa even gets some of his ideas for presents from the Post Office. Kenilworth Welcomes Santa Claus: Once again, Kenilworth will be holding a Christmas party at the Show Grounds on Thursday, 24 December. One of the highlights is Santa arriving to distribute presents to all the children at 7pm. By visiting any of the shops in Kenilworth (including the Post Office) that sell Solicitors visiting Kenilworth gifts, details can then be provided to Thursday afternoons by appoinment only ensure that Santa does not miss your child at the Christmas party. 5447 3122 e: admin@cartlaw.com.au

ast month, Kenilworth First Responders travelled to Kilkevan to take part in a joint training day with other First Response groups from around South East Queensland and trainers from the Queensland Ambulance Service. In total, over 50 volunteer responders practised training scenarios and updated their skills, to ensure that they could return to their communities prepared to provide emergency health care before the arrival of an ambulance. Kenilworth First Response is always keen to accept new members... if you are interested, phone Wayne or Joyce on 5446 0723.

nce again the Blue Stockhorse Team (see photo below), consisting of Rachael Law, Dale Bergman, Ella Skoupy, Megan Lisett and Heather Reardon, blitzed their opponents in the annual President’s Cup held on Saturday 14 November. The Purple Appaloosa team improved on their fourth place finish last year to leap frog into second place closely followed by the Red Arabian Team. The Yellow Quarter Horse team finished in fourth position. The teams tested their speed and accuracy across ten events and had heaps of fun at the same time. A total of seven riders endured very hot conditions at the Caloundra Pony Club’s Open Hunter Trial held on Sunday 15 November. Hunter Trials consist of one round show jumping and a cross country course. Congratulations to Bret Lashmar and Tonia Murtagh for competing in the Seniors 60cm Group; Rachael Law in the 60cm aged 1326; Jessie Falconer in the Introductory (80cm) aged 12 and under, Bronte Law competed in the 60cm aged 12 and under. Kenilworth First Response keeps rolling, thanks to council

T

he Kenilworth First Response group would like to publicly thank the Sunshine Coast Regional Council for their generosity in awarding us a ‘Major Grant for Community Development’. This grant, for the purposes of providing emergency medical aid, is much appreciated by the group. It will be used to offset the costs of maintaining and running our two dedicated emergency response vehicles, and will allow us to keep operating efficiently. We are on call 24 hours a day, every day of the year, so our vehicles need to be maintained in optimum condition to enable a prompt response to medical emergencies in the Upper Mary Valley. Residents and visitors to the area will both benefit from this generous support by the council.

KENILWORTH 70 Years Serving Kenilworth Community

T

he Kenilworth Hotel was officially opened on November 18 1939, but the hotel was in use for at least one week prior to that date because Edwin Thomas Sims and his bride Audrey Hillier spent their wedding night of November 11 1939 in the “honeymoon suite” on the premises. The Courier Mail report on November 17, 1939: Dreams of a man from the city to return to the country life he loves will be fulfilled on Saturday night, when his modern two-story hotel will be officially opened at Kenilworth on the Gympie main road, 35 miles from Landsborough. He is Mr M.J. Lane who is well suited to conduct this North Coast rendez-vous, which carries the modernity of the metropolis to a charming rural district, nestling in a valley behind the Blackall Ranges. In January, 1940 Thelma Rogers and Arch Purdon held the first of many wedding receptions at the hotel. Many brides living out of town dressed at the hotel and were photographed on the timber staircase, providing a wonderful history of wedding fashions through the years. The Hotel was used by visiting optometrist Mr C.T. Hall who began visiting the township in April 1940, along with visits to Kin Kin, Pomona, Cooran and Cooroy. September 13 1940 Nambour Chronicle article reported Miss M. Beattie and Mr O.A. Zelmer as winning the fifth series of the Hotel Euchre Tournament.

In March 1954 the hotel freehold was sold and Mick Lane (pictured on the right) and his sister Ellen were farewelled by the citizens of Kenilworth and District when they were presented with an engraved standard light, crystal whisky decanter, glasses and tray as well as sum of money which Mr Lane insisted be donated to the Courier Mail Flood Victims appeal. So ended an era. Happy 70th Birthday Kenilworth Hotel. Lenore Meldrum President Kenilworth & District Historical Assn. Inc.

KENILWORTH HOTEL’S 70TH WAS A CLASSIC!

K

enilworth Hotel celebrated its 70th birthday in style on Saturday 14 November, with great attractions and brilliant entertainment. We had 25 cars on show from Vintage to Classic thanks to Blackall Range Horseless carriage and Sunshine Coast Antique Car Club. Many thanks for their support. There were plenty of pony rides for the kids and a woodchop demonstration. Every body partied well into the night as the “House” band kept everyone up and dancing till midnight. Photos Birgit Kehr

The November 1940 wedding of Glenna Pearce and Don Paulger at St Matthews Church was followed by a reception in the lounge of the Kenilworth Hotel. December 1940 saw hotel as the venue for the wedding breakfast of Olive Sproxton and Jack Cole. 1942 Optometrist Hall changed his visiting day to Sunday which affords residents an opportunity of having their eyes correctly tested. Wartime shortages of men and materials possibly the reason. April 1942 W.L. Watson and Sons announced extension of passenger services from Maleny to Kenilworth, leaving Kenilworth Hotel 6 am Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Mr N.G. KENILWORTH KENILWORTH’S CHRISTMAS EVE PARTY AND SECRET SANTA DETAILS FOR PARENTS

Greg puts jokes into rhyme; observes the behaviour of people and animals; details everyday events that have come to his attention; and explores ‘weighty’ problems such as rugby league. Oh yes, and politics!

K

enilworth’s annual Christmas Eve party is on Thursday 24 December 2009 from 5pm at the Kenilworth showgrounds with everyone’s favourite Santa arriving around 7pm.

A great night of free family entertainment including FREE RIDES on a giant Slippery Dip, or mechanical bull plus entertainment including Christmas Carols and a Mega Prize Draw raffle. Barbecue food and a softdrink stall will be there to cater for any hungry elves in the family. Secret Santa Business: Parents can ensure their child or children receive a gift from Santa by making arrangements with any of the Kenilworth shop owners. Note, any gifts purchased from outside of the Kenilworth township will not make it to Santa’s Sleigh. Please support Kenilworth as all business owners have assisted throughout the year to ensure that this event can be run each year. For newcomers to area, we welcome you to this great family orientated evening of fun and festivities. Further information available from Tonia at Boxsells Real Estate or Irene at Kenilworth News.

THE SLACK POET

hat’s the best course of action to take when your computer is groaning with an accumulation of poems written over some three decades? Confronted with this situation, Greg Slack (pictured above right) has collated his into a book titled “FOR BETTER or VERSE”. Anyone with an interest in poetry - and maybe even some without - will find this 80-odd poem book worthwhile reading as

Readers may recall his first book “Farming with Medad” which described, in both prose and verse, his upbringing on a farm at Kidaman Creek in the 1950/60s era. While “FOR BETTER or VERSE” may bring a mixture of different emotions (including disagreement with the author’s opinions in some cases), the predominant one will definitely be laughter. At $25, the book is available from Kenilworth News, the Bellbird Creek Teahouse or by phoning 5496 8402 or 5495 3159.

Christmas in Cooroy with a Twist of Heritage

f you haven’t ever been to a Christmas in Cooroy event then you don’t know what you are missing out on! Cooroy businesses and community groups are coming together to present the fifth Christmas in Cooroy event on Saturday 5 December from 4pm in Apex Park. Each year has grown and this year is no different, making it one the premier festive events on the Coast.

This year a heritage theme has been added to the event to celebrate some of Cooroy’s milestones. Those wishing to get into the heritage theme are urged to wear Australian heritage clothing on the day. There will also be heritage displays in Apex Park and the Cooroy Butter Factory. Cooroy was founded from the timber industry so the boiler house at the Lower Mill Site will be open to the public for the first time allowing people to go on a self-guided tour and see the fabulous work done on the restored and heritage listed boiler and kilns. The Cooroora Woodworkers and Sunshine Coast Camphor Laurel Initiative will also be open from 8am to 4pm at the Mill Site with woodworking demonstrations and displays of their products. And the Rothwells Woodworking Club from Redcliffe is also visiting the Cooroora Woodworkers. The Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group Great Santa Race has also been added to the program with $1,400 in cash prizes up for grabs. And until the end of November you can also play a round of golf at the Cooroy Golf Club using heritage clubs for a chance to win $150 cash. And of course all the same favourites are still on the program including rides, face painting, magic by Ben Wright, loads of giveaways, competitions, woodchop demonstration, the Bendigo Bank Street Parade, heritage displays, local band Rust, a Santa visit and fireworks which are all free. Plus the Poet’s Breakfast at Bistro Bistro for $29 at 8am (bookings essential) which is nearly booked out. There are also plenty of opportunities to win big with the Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy Photographic Competition, the MelcoLanhams Mitre 10 Christmas Lights Competition and the People’s Choice Vote for the Queensland Media Print Decorate Your Shop Competition. All the details are available on the Christmas in Cooroy page of www.cooroy.com.au. The entire event has been funded by over 30 businesses which is an example of Cooroy’s great community spirit. A big thank you must go to the Rotary Club of Cooroy and the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce who host the event and also to the sponsors who have funded everything from insurance and toilets to professional entertainment and fireworks: Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Bendigo Bank, Cooroy Rag, Luke’s Supa IGA, Victory Hotel, Zinc 96.1FM, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing, Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, Wimmers, Ricon Contractors Pty Ltd, Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy, Bistro Bistro, ISSA Creations, David Lafferty Hinternoosa, Hinternoosa, Telstra Countrywide, MelcoLanhams, Kennards Hire, Ritek Building Solutions, Gelignite Jacks, QMP, Cooroy Travel, Solar Power Specialists, Town and

Cooroy Great Santa Race

C

hristmas is a busy time of year for everyone but perhaps the busiest of all is Santa. Even in this age of instant communication and jet engines, Santa still knows the wisdom of delegating and outsourcing. That’s why he has a team of representatives around the world to help him deliver all the presents to the good boys and girls (even with Santa’s magic he can’t do it all alone). This year Santa has endorsed the inaugural Great Santa Race to be held in Cooroy on Saturday 5 December. The Great Santa Race involves a short dash up Maple Street in Cooroy by competitors wearing Santa suits. Perhaps the most exciting part is that there is a cash prize pool of $1,400 up for grabs! First prize is $500, second is $250 and third is $150 but the beauty is that you don’t even have to place to be a winner as there are also five random draws of $100! The Great Santa Race will start at Apex Park in Cooroy at 4.30pm on Saturday 5 December. Entry to the Great Santa Race is free and the first 10 entrants to register also receive a free santa suit to race in. Participants must be 18 years and over and entries can be obtained online at www. cooroy.com.au on the Christmas in Cooroy page. Entry forms must be received by 5pm on Thursday 3 December 2009. Registration on the day will commence from 3.30pm. The Great Santa Race is a component of Christmas in Cooroy (see article left) The event could not be run without the fantastic support from all its sponsors: Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Bendigo Bank, The Cooroy Rag, Luke’s Supa IGA , Zinc 96.1 FM, Victory Hotel, Noosa to Hinterland Plumbing Group, Ricon Contractors PL, Cooroy Mountain Spring Water, Wimmers Soft Drink, Cooroy Central Guardian Pharmacy, Lanhams Mitre 10 Cooroy, Qld Media Print, Ritek Building Solutions, Bistro Bistro, Kennards Hire, Cooroy Travel, ISSA Creations, Solar Power Specialists, David Lafferty of Hinternoosa, Gelignite Jacks, Town & Country Home Rentals, Telstra Countrywide, Hinternoosa Real Estate, I-Ree-Lee-Assist, Cooroy Fruit Bowl, Picture of Health and Firefly Solutions. MARY VALLEY

Our front cover story

Seasons Greetings from Mary Valley Show Society

T

he Mary Valley Show Society would like to extend Seasons Greetings to everyone in the Mary Valley. It is time to celebrate a new era in the Valley, and we wish you all a happy and prosperous 2010! It has been a busy year for the Mary Valley Show Society. We hosted three very successful Endurance rides including the 320km Far away ride and the International Endurance ride. Thanks to our very capable and committed Show Ball Committee, Imbil hosted our own Miss Show Girl Ball, as well as the Sub Chamber Ball this year. The Mary Valley Arts Festival attracted a record amount of exhibitors this year and the Committee is planning a 10/10 celebration at the Exhibition next year featuring a Collaboration Art Work, with around 200 artists involved. The 10th Celebration of the Mary Valley Arts Festival will be held from 8 to11 July 2010. The Annual Show in August attracted a record crowd and was hailed as a huge success. The Committee is working hard on ensuring next year will be bigger and better. Our focus is on hosting a day featuring local agriculture, horticulture as well as local business and making it an affordable day for the whole family to enjoy.

S

Reclaiming the River

taunch supporters of the Save the Mary River campaign gathered on the riverbanks of Traveston Crossing on Saturday 14 November for an informal picnic and swim to celebrate their win. There was smiles all round as they realised that for the first time in three and a half years, they could appreciate the river without dwelling on the dam threat, or planning their next campaign move. Campaigner, Arkin Mackay said “This is an important moment for me in coming to terms with the success of the campaign. I’m here to enjoy the river (we could have lost), and to spend time with my ‘campaign family’.”

THANK YOU TO ALL CAMPAIGNERS, SUPPORTERS, FRIENDS OF THE MARY RIVER

I

want to transmit a huge thankyou! Thankyou for receiving the news updates during the campaign, thankyou for responding when required, thankyou for acting when asked, thankyou for your message of support which kept us going, thankyou for your flood of congratulatory messages when we won, thankyou for playing a part in this history-making campaign, and most of all, thankyou for seeing it through to this incredible conclusion! All photos and articles from Arkin Mackay www.stoppress.com.au

The Kandanga 1000 ride attracted a good crowd again this year and we look forward to continuing this event as a celebration of the Valley next year. The Brisbane Sporting Car Rally in May was a huge success, and we look forward to hosting the 2010 International Car Rally Championship in Imbil on the 30 and 31 of July 2010. The Australian Rally Championship announced this week that they will have the most comprehensive television schedule in the history of the sport next year. Network TEN has committed unprecedented support of the ARC for the 2010 season and Imbil will certainly benefit from this coverage. We look forward to seeing you at the Imbil Showgrounds on December 4 for our Christmas Party! Come and enjoy entertainment for the whole family including local band Sneaky Pete, rides, raffles and Santa himself agreed to include us in his already heavily booked schedule. We welcome any new members to come along to our meetings, held on the second Tuesday of each month at 5.30pm at the Imbil Public Hall. For any enquiries contact our secretary Heinke Butt on 5488 6848 or 0419 024 291. WELLINGTON’S WAY

o Traveston Crossing Dam Well - what a week it has been. The highlight has certainly been the Federal Government’s decision to stop the proposed Traveston Crossing Dam.

I am very pleased Premier Anna Bligh has decided not to challenge the decision in the courts, and to offer the properties the State Government purchased for the entire project for sale back to the original owners. I have been advised that people who sold their property to the State Government and want to now purchase it back can call 1800 225 384 for more information. With the Traveston Crossing Dam now stopped I have asked the State Government to immediately review the need for the continuation of the current proposed major pipe line to the Sunshine Coast area. I have told the Government that I do not believe there is any continuing need for such a large pipe. The cost of the pipeline from Eudlo to North of Cooroy is currently estimated to cost $211.5 Million. No Upper House I have supported the State Government in not moving to reintroduce an Upper House for State Parliament. I do not believe we need more State politicians, and have supported the government in the review of the current committee system to see how the committee system can be improved to provide better scrutiny of the legislative process. I

Cr. Julie Walker

, along with my family, would like to take this opportunity to wish all the residents of the Mary Valley and beyond a wonderful, safe and merry Christmas and also a happy and healthy New Year throughout 2010. Huge congratulations to everybody for their hard work and dedication during the three and a half year fight to save our precious Mary Valley. A special thanks to the members of the “Save the Mary” team, for their diligent efforts which shone through in their success. I attended the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee AGM in October, and I would like to congratulate Phil Moran and his team on a wonderful year and wish the new committee well for the next 12 months. We have a Mary River to work for now that the “NO DAM” decision has been made. I would urge people to take a look at www.maryriverturtle. com to check out the work that has been done for these precious animals. You can also buy some chocolate turtles to help the hard work continue. With the dry weather around many things become more noticeable, one thing is rubbish, a friend of mine carries a plastic bag when she goes walking to put rubbish up in. Just a small idea which could make a huge difference, one we would all be grateful for. I attended a forum in Maryborough called, “Beyond the Matchbox”. It was looking at ways in which we could manage our country better and make good use of fires instead of waiting until it is too late and we end up with ‘out of control’ fires. I found it very interesting and with the help of groups like MRCCC and BMRG we will learn so much. Since my November notes I have met a local ‘accredited’ wild pig hunter, he showed me some amazing photos of what huge animals we have lurking around in the valley, so if you want to know more please contact me and I will pass on his information to you. Gympie Regional Gallery has been very busy and for the last month, and I have been told that the new exhibits are just breath taking, so go along and take a look, I know I will be. You can sit out on the new verandah and enjoy views over the city to the River. This year BMRG has been working on developing the ‘Great Sandy Biosphere’, you can go and check out all their hard work and what it means to have Biosphere status at www.greatsandybiosphere.org There are so many positives associated with this project and I would like to congratulate BMRG for their part in this achievement. I hope to see many of you at the Community Christmas Party at the showgrounds, Imbil on Friday 4 December from 6pm. The night will be fantastic and is complete with food, entertainment and “fireworks”. Merry Christmas to all

OUR COMMUNITY IMBIL BIKE RALLY 2009

Imbil

Congratulations to the President and the crew for putting on such a great event every year of which 2009 was certainly no exception and contributing to the communities of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. See you there in 2010. Photos and article Birgit Kehr

T

he Sunshine Coast Hinterland is a motorcyclist’s heaven, perfect country and roads for riding from any direction to the Imbil Bike Rally held on the 13 and 15 November 2009. This popular and long-standing event is organised and well run by the Leisure Riders Touring Motor Cycle Club. It started off in 1990 for the pure enjoyment of hanging out with likeminded people for a couple of days. This gathering attracts riders of all ages and backgrounds from all over Australia. The President of the club, Peter “Leggs” Anderson (pictured on the right, third from the right) and his crew would like to thank everyone who attended the rally this year and for the amazing ongoing support, they have received over the last two decades. “You folk are bloody brilliant!” The club uses this event, not only to have a great get together but also to raise funds for the Imbil P&C, fire brigade, Vietnam Veterans Mine Clearing Team Cambodia, even a cheque for $1000 handed to the Salvation Army in Ipswich last year. Borumba Deer Park has been the venue for this event for a long time and this great place offers cool, shady campsites, or vans and cabins on site if you don’t feel like putting up a tent. However, you will need to book early for next year’s rally weekend, as it has grown over the years into the “don’t miss” event for enthusiasts of every of motorcycle imaginable. It attracts thousands of bike nuts of all kinds who mingle amongst the camps, bikes and shady trees in an always friendly and enthusiastic throng for the two (some stay for three) day event. If you have never witnessed the bike gymkhana held at 3pm on the Saturday afternoon you have no idea what you are missing. The trophies are contested (all are welcome to enter) and one of life’s joys to watch unfold under the hot sun (don’t forget a hat).

OUR COMMUNITY KIN KIN Kin Ki IS ALL FIRED UP n

The Cooroy Wanderer is an 11km easy walking trail that also starts at the Noosa Showgrounds, and extends through the Yurol State Forest to Cooroy.

F

athers, uncles, neighbours and friends are all part of the Kin Kin Rural Fire Brigade. The last few months all the new Kin Kin Fire brigade volunteers have been through intense training with Officer Neil Davidson to attain their fire management 1 Certificate.

These wonderful community members have given up time to go through many training adventures, truck driving tests and lectures. Officer Neil tested them on response equipment; how to prevent injury, response to wildfire and how to operate communications systems and equipment. All ten rural fire brigade volunteers passed their fire management one training and operational doctrine and received their certificates while families cheered them on during the ceremony. The Kin Kin kids were very proud of their fathers, uncles and neighbours and also got to check out the two cool fire trucks! The Kin Kin community is all fired up with a total of 20 members for the Rural Fire Brigade.

Cr Brennan said that both of the new trails are relatively flat and can be completed as a day walk. “The new trails will feature heritage information along the length and are suitable for walkers, mountain bike riders and horse riders,” Cr Brennan said. “I invite everyone to enjoy the new Mac’n’Back and Cooroy Wanderer trails for the first time on Sunday 29 November.” The trail opening will be at the Noosa Showgrounds, Exhibition Street, Pomona. Free registration starts at 6.30am for horse and bike riders and 7.30am for walkers. All routes will start and finish at the Noosa Showgrounds. Trailblazers can either join in a 5km bush walk, 15km horse ride, and 25km or 7km bike ride. The guided walks and rides will leave in stages, horse riders and mountain bikers at 7.30am, and those walking at 7.45am. Participants can enjoy a free good old country style morning tea at the Noosa Showgrounds after their ride or walk. Horse riders should note the trails follow small sections of roads, and cross the railway line. Encounters with trail bike riders may also occur so riders and horses must be experienced. Don’t forget to wear a hat, sunscreen and bring water. Mountain bikes will be available for hire. Call Noose Bike Hire on 5474 3322 to book.

Locals, residents and visitors can now walk or ride all the way through to Cooroy, Lake Macdonald and Kin Kin and vice versa along the great Noosa Trail Network.” Cr Brennan said. Grandparents Rule School for the Day

ood Shepherd Lutheran College was awash with friendly smiling faces on Friday 30 October for the annual Prep to Year 5 Grandparents and Special Friends Day. The day, which celebrates the special role these people play in our students lives, has become a highlight on the college calendar with numbers increasing each year. Approximately 250 special guests were entertained throughout the morning with class activities, a concert and a wonderful morning tea prepared by the Secondary Home Economic students. Year 1 twins, Justin and Karl Holland, along with sister, Nicole (Year 4), were ecstatic to welcome their ‘Opa’, Gustav Meyer, all the way from South Africa to the event. Mr Meyer who has a total of 18 grandchildren, seven of which are in Australia, and three great grandchildren finds himself an extremely experienced old hand at the art of attending Grandparent Days. He commented on the wonderful emphasis placed on the benefits of music to the children at Good Shepherd and said he had thoroughly enjoyed the concert that all the students presented. Justin and Karl said the highlight of their day had been building and decorating a paper plane together with their ‘Opa’ as part of the class activities. This was particularly enjoyable for the boys as one of their Opa’s talents is to build things for the family, producing items ranging from tables to toys.

Good Shepherd Lutheran College U13 Futsal Team are Australasian Champs

T

he Good Shepherd Lutheran College U13 Futsal team took out the Australasian Championships last weekend on the Gold Coast. Futsal is a very fast paced, five aside, indoor soccer game. The Good Shepherd team won a tense final against Cairns College, St. Andrew’s. The game went down to the wire with the champions being decided by a penalty shootout after drawing 3-3 and a nail biting, 10 minutes of golden goal extra-time. The Good Shepherd team consisting of Grant de Chastel, Jordan Woolley, James Allan, William Allan, Jamie Page, Sam Norcott–Wall, Mitchell Kiefer, Jonathon Emerick and Jack Carey were unbeaten in the schools competition against teams from Australia and New Zealand. The team also played against a New Zealand representative team, narrowly losing 2-1. The boys impressed the visiting Kiwis with their skill and sportsmanship, earning themselves an invitation to tour New Zealand next year. Goalkeeper, Mitchell Kiefer was awarded ‘Best Keeper of the Tournament’. Coach, Brett de Chastel and Head of Sport, Steve Carey could not have been happier with the squad’s performance over the three day tournament, “Each player made an important contribution to the success of the team and can be proud of themselves. Planning is underway for what will hopefully be the team’s first overseas competition” Good Shepherd Lutheran College congratulates the boys on their Australasian title.

Good Shepherd Lutheran College greatly values the contribution these important members of our College community make in the lives of our students.

OUR COMMUNITY Libraries’ calendar presents Coast as you’ve never seen it

libraries had received a huge response from residents to its call for photos earlier this year. “When libraries put out a call for historical photos, we never imagined that we would receive such a positive response from our community,” Ross said. “We received more than 600 photos and the quality was so high that we decided to produce a calendar that would enable the entire community to learn more about the history of the Coast. The calendar should appeal to locals and visitors alike, and remind us that we all chose to visit the Coast because of the unspoilt environment.” All photos submitted from the public will be featured in the libraries’ online Picture Sunshine Coast Collection. Residents can donate historical photos to council libraries at any time. The calendar was coordinated by the Sunshine Coast Libraries and funded by a Queensland Government Q150 community grant.

R

ecent arrivals to the Sunshine Coast - and longtime residents - will be amazed at the images of the Coast captured in a new calendar that shows a sky scraper-free Mooloolaba foreshore and the Noosa River as an untamed wilderness.

For more information about Sunshine Coast Libraries visit http://www.library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

The 2010 calendar, produced by Sunshine Coast Libraries, depicts the early years of the Coast from 1900 to 1960 and includes many never-before-seen photos recently acquired from private collections. From a bush picnic in Caloundra in the early 1900s to a record-breaking 206kg fish caught on the Noosa River in 1935, the Places We Make – Communities of the Sunshine Coast calendar includes photos of many historical aspects of life on the Coast. The photos were sourced from the libraries’ extensive photo collection, Picture Sunshine Coast, and historical pictures sent in by local residents. The calendars will sell for $10 each and can be purchased from council libraries, customer service centres and Visitor Information Centres.

EDITOR’S NOTE I am wondering who are the little children on the Gheerulla shot? If you have an idea or you think you recognise yourself in the photo please email me (the editor) and send me a current photo at maryvalleyvoice@aanet.com.au. We want to see the then and now effect!
