from the editor Like the rest of the world I guess we at the Mary Valley Voice are economicaly challenged too which forces us to go back to twenty page editions. It would greatly be appreciated if in the future the articles submitted could be no more than 250 words. Articles will also be sorted by priority level so as they come they might go into another future edition. We need more advertisers to sustain our community newspaper it is as simple as that. Thank you in advance for your understanding. And thank Laetitia Hoffmann you also for the support from all our current advertisers. jgMVV0409_KH

KENILWORTH Kenilworth Hall Show & Recreation Ground Assn. President’s Report 2009
A
t the recent AGM of the Association, President Bill Morris expressed his appreciation to the committee for their assistance in making 2008 a very successful year of operation.
The year saw a reasonably good show and rodeo, another highly successful Chook Chase, and an increase in visiting caravaners. Special mention was made of the high standard of work performed by Clem and Olive Hassall in maintaining the financial records of the Association, together with the excellent work of Tonia Murtagh as acting Secretary during the incapacitation of the Association Secretary for a time, as well as the on-going maintenance of the grounds and improvements by Cec Pearson and Doug Kussrow, without whose work the visual presentation of the property would not be the showcase that it is. Improvements undertaken during the year included sewerage connection from the toilet block near the canteen to the Council installations, a grease trap to the canteen, and a dump point for the benefit of both visiting and passing caravaners, all expensive but essential. A second-hand cold room was additionally purchased and installed just outside the supper room, as well as 20 new fold-up tables for use in the hall. The annual Christmas Tree also proved to be a wonderful success due to the hard work by Irene Symons and Tonia Murtagh fund raising throughout the year, and the willing helpers on the night at the canteen. In terms of the constitution, Cec Pearson, Tonia Murtagh, Sonia Law, Les Fisher, Lenore Meldrum and Blair Meldrum retired from office, offered themselves for re-election and were elected. Bill Morris was re-elected as President, Cec Pearson as Vice-President, Les Fisher as Junior Vice-President, Blair Meldrum as Secretary, Tonia Murtagh as Minutes Secretary,

Clem Hassall as Treasurer and Olive Hassall as Booking Secretary, all unopposed. Terry Murtagh was additionally nominated as a new committee member. 2009 will be another busy year for the Association, with resurfacing of the floors in the supper room and foyer, exit lighting upgrade, and outside street lighting on the main street side of the hall all being listed as priority items. New external aluminum blinds will be installed on the western side of the hall in the near future. For the information of new residents to Kenilworth in particular, the hall and grounds are owned by the Kenilworth community and managed on a totally voluntary basis by an elected committee. Members of the community are welcome at hall committee meetings, and additionally welcome to join and work toward the running of the Association. Membership is free. All that is needed is an interest in the community and a willingness to volunteer to assist where you have an interest. Blair Meldrum Secretary
A decade in cyberspace 1999-2009
T
his year Kenilworth celebrates 10 years on the web with the Kenilworth community website - www. kenilworth.qld.au Recently Margaret and Tony White held a reunion lunch at their home, Kenilworth Bed and Breakfast, for some of the people who attended the original launching of the Kenilworth website. Since 1999 the website has grown and developed into one of the best community websites in Australia. It has the distinction of being the first community website in Queensland to be awarded a Commonwealth Government sponsored geographical domain name, and the second in Australia as a whole. Basic listings on the site for businesses or organisations are free but many contribute towards costs by commissioning their own web pages, eCards or links. Yvonne James

KENILWORTH Sport in Kenilworth in Years Gone By
By 1936 the Maleny-Kenilworth Rugby League Association was flourishing. The Kenilworth Golf Club was also formed in this decade. This group acquired a 20 year lease for a nine-hole golf course on Mr. C.A. Cole’s property (now Bellmore) in June of 1939. If a full golf course had been established at that time this small community may have featured on the international golfing circuit – well it is nice to dream… All facts produced in this article come from the pages of The Chronicle which later became The Nambour Chronicle - which may be accessed through http://library. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ then clicking on the Nambour Chronicle link. K
enilworth and District has a proud history in the field of sporting activities. Competitive cricket competitions were played as early as 1903, with the Kenilworth Cricket Club grounds situated on the Sharry property, now Gheerulla Stables.
More than 400 people travelled more than 90 minutes to visit the Kenilworth Museum in 2008 - how long would it take you to come to the Museum in Alexandra Street every Sunday between 10am and 2.00pm ? Lenore Meldrum President Kenilworth & District Historical Association.
Horse racing was held on Easter Monday as early as 1904. The Committee at that time consisted of Messrs C. Sharry, J. Alford, P Murtagh, A. Loweke, J. Thompson, H. McSweeney and E. Pickering as listed in The Chronicle advertisement on page 2 of the April 1, 1904 edition. After the Kenilworth Athletic Club was established at a public meeting held in February, 1906 the Easter Monday Sports became an annual event in the community. The newspaper report of the 1908 Easter Monday Sports Day included a ladies nail driving competition as well as foot and horse racing. When Miss Edna Sully came to the Kenilworth district in the early 1920’s, she introduced the game of hockey to the young women of the district. The first competitive game of the Kenilworth Hockey Club was played on June 3, 1923. Over the next five years, five of the players from the Kenilworth Club represented Queensland in interstate and international matches. Kenilworth and Cambroon both fielded soccer teams in the 1920’s. It is believed that soccer continued to be played in the district until the late 1940’s.

black belt in March, so I was pretty confident that I would be competitive” she said. Cameron and Adam fought strongly through their rounds of sparring and eventually met up in the final where Adam won the gold in a very close decision. “They were clearly ahead of the other players at the championships” said Norm. ”Tae Kwon Do is great for fitness, flexibility, concentration, self confidence, and self defence, as well as being really enjoyable. Our training can cater for a variety of needs ranging from general fitness and well-being to a more intense work-out for those who want to compete in tournaments.” Norm said.

ifteen year old, 2nd dan black belt, Cameron Taylor from the Kenilworth Tae Kwon Do Club recently won a silver medal to secure a place in the Queensland State Taekwondo Team. Cameron will now compete at the national titles, to be held in Brisbane later this year. “I had a couple of hard bouts and finished the day with a second placing in the final” said Cameron. “I now need to travel to Brisbane about twice a month to continue competing at other club tournaments and to attend the state team training sessions, leading up to the nationals in September” he said. Instructor Norm Taylor said “This is a great result for Cam and is reward for his dedication and this result follows the success of our team recently at the Moon Lee Tae Kwon Do state championships in Brisbane”, said Norm.
The class is made up of people of all ages and abilities and that helps to maintain the friendly, family-orientated approach. For any information on Moon Lee Tae Kwon Do at Kenilworth or Conondale call Norm on 0428 712 883, or for the classes at Maleny, Mapleton and Nambour call 5476 3534.

SHAVE FOR A CURE
enilworth Community College year 7 student Tyron Blinco has done himself proud by taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave. He raised a total of $403.35. The shave took place on Sunday 15 March and was witnessed and supported by the Kenilworth Cricket Club, and was held up at the Bowls Club. Tyron doesn’t really ever have long hair so he was told he had better grow it before the shave so there would be something to shave off. Tyron also lost half of each eyebrow and raised an extra $100 for doing this. Well done Tyron!
Kenilworth students Jordan Taylor, Ellyn Creevey, Adam Gunton and Cameron Taylor joined Dean Hodges, Daniel Fitter and Ben Lanham from Nambour to represent the Sunshine Coast. Ellyn showed great skill to win three gold medals for sparring, patterns and timber breaking. “This was my first championship and I didn’t really know what to expect” said Ellyn. “I have been training hard to try out for my

KENILWORTH Olympian visits Kenilworth SCC students
S
tudents at Kenilworth State Community College were given a rare treat recently when Olympic Women’s Water Polo player Kate Gynther conducted a coaching clinic as part of the College Physical Education Program.
Years Three to Seven students have been participating in Flippa Ball (modified water polo) conducted by instructors from Water Polo Queensland. Kate is one of these instructors and was more than happy to share her Olympic experience with the students. She was a member of our Australian Bronze Medal winning team at the 2008 Beijing Games. The students were amazed to see an Olympic medal up close and were allowed to hold it as well. Kate is currently studying for a law degree in Brisbane where she is based, while she also juggles this with her commitments to the Brisbane Barracudas Water Polo team who are part of the women’s national competition. Kate has recently undergone shoulder surgery and at twenty–six still has hopes of representing Australia at the 2012 London Olympic Games. She has played all over the world and against many different countries, citing the Italians as being particularly tough.
And the winners are! Kenilworth Butchery

Lower Mill Site - a Buzz of Activity
ooroy residents and visitors will have noticed an increasing buzz of activity in and around the Cooroy Lower Mill Site recently.
Under the guidance of local artists Susie Blue and Mal Butterworth, this project will culminate in a ceramic artwork which will be installed at the boiler house entrance.
After more than eight years in the planning, Cooroys ‘state of the art’ library is one step closer.
“Many of the participants involved in this project have a connection to the Noosa hinterland region and their input will result in an artwork that not only records our history but is also reflective of the mill and the region,” Cr Brennan said.
Local division 12 Councillor Lew Brennan said the new library will be completed and open to the public by the end of the year, weather permitting. Also, work placement participants of a Queensland Government funded Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative are currently working on the other side of the creek. This project is being managed by council and is aimed at enhancing employment opportunities for members of the community through up-skilling. There are currently four workers and a supervisor laying pavers around the kilns and boiler house. This project is also demonstrating resource recovery, with the pavers being a combination of left over Hastings Street pavers and signed community pavers. There are two artworks projects underway at the Mill Site. In a joint project between council and the Arts Queensland’s art+place program, public art for Mill Place has been commissioned from Sunshine Coast artists Glen Manning and Kathy Daly. The concept around their artwork incorporates the bunya leaf and red cedar flowers providing a connection to the environment, heritage and indigenous aspects of Cooroy and the broader hinterland. (photo next page) “There is also currently a council Creative Histories Project being run in a partnership between the Butter Factory Arts Centre and the Day Respite Centre” Cr Brennan said.
8 | April 15, 2009
This project is progressing well with the planning, design and research stages completed and the connective stories currently being transferred into visual images for the mosaic. “All of this activity is helping to secure Cooroy as a major hinterland centre which is part of Council’s plan for the region. A large part of this is due to the commitment of the community and in particular, the Lower Mill Board” Cr Brennan said. For more information on the Cooroy Lower Mill Site visit www.lowermillsite.com.au.

MARY VALLEY Mary Valley Chamber of Commerce
This meeting is an opportunity to raise trail use issues and proposals with the Queensland Government.
t the meeting of the Chamber on the 17 March, we were privileged to have in attendance Cr Tony Perrett from Gympie Regional Council, also Amanda and Tanya from the Cooloola Regional Development Bureau. Tony Perrett spoke about the changing role of the CRDB, with council being responsible for economic development and the CRDB looking after tourism related issues and events. This was an interesting insight into how the Chamber may become involved in helping to promote the Mary Valley and the region in general. It was a good opportunity to meet Tanya and Amanda from the CRDB and to put “faces” to names and voices we speak with over the phone.
There will also be an update on the mountain bike trail that is being built at Garapine in the Mary Valley. All interested parties and community groups are invited to be part of this recreational process.
Naomi Cooney, provided a comprehensive report on her meeting with the council and the proposed Weed Management Strategy for the council region, many questions were asked and it was opportune that Cr Tony Perrett was on hand to clarify some of the points from the councils perspective.

Get out and about this autumn with Go Bush!
A
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranger Trevor Hatfield said children, adults and families would all enjoy exciting outdoor activities that only Queensland’s national parks and forests could provide. “Come along and enjoy the fun of discovering what’s right on our doorstep,” Mr Hatfield said. “If creatures of the night amaze you, join a Night Discovery Walk and find out about our nocturnal neighbours or get up close to some Aussie reptiles on our Snakes and Dragons activity. For those wanting to stretch the legs and take in spectacular views, the Mt Ngungun walk in the Glass House Mountains would be ideal.” Go Bush is active, educational and fun. These and a host of other fun school holiday activities for kids and families are held not only on the Sunshine Coast but also in locations around Brisbane and the Gold Coast. For information about the Go Bush program or to make a booking, call 1300 130 372 and follow the prompts to Go Bush or go to www.epa.qld.gov.au. or visit www.maryvalleyvoice.com for full description of the local walks

A
sub committee was formed for the Q150 celebrations at a meeting held on 10 February 2009. A Celebration Ball will be held on 26 September in the Kandanga Community Hall. We will endeavour to involve schools and local groups to assist with the organisation of this special event. If there is anybody out there who could assist towards making this memorable event special, please contact Trish Gabbana on 5484 3465. Funding has been sought to create a Mary Valley Heritage Mural. Keeping the heritage of the communities of the Mary Valley alive in the future is very important. The mural will compose of twelve panels that will link together to form a single narrative allowing each panel to be used separately or linked together for smaller or larger displays. The painting of the panels will be done by local artists living in the Mary Valley. Hopefully, it will be completed to coincide with the Heritage Ball. Donald Grieves

which includes a handbook and other materials, lunch for the 2 days and morning and afternoon tea. You must register beforehand, as numbers are limited.
he Victorian Bushfires have had an incredible impact on people all over Australia, and indeed, the world. The ferocity of the fires, the devastation to property and the huge loss of life has all been headline news. Time and again on all the reports, survivors of the fire would remark that you can always rebuild but what was important was that they still had their life.
ASIST is an internationally recognized program that is seen as suicide first aid – the intervention you can provide until you can get someone more appropriate assistance. The workshop was run successfully last year in the Mary Valley (see photo) and is something that both Community Workers and general members of the community should attend.
T
Life is precious. We can sometimes take that for granted. The loss of one life when it is preventable becomes a tragedy.
Other dates for the year are August 26 and 27 on the Cooloola Coast and October 13 and 14 back in Gympie. If you are interested in more information or to register for ASIST please call Ruth Polley on 5480 3400.
Kenilworth Early Birds Playgroup - April 2009
F
Suicide is a largely preventable cause of death that goes quietly undetected. Suicide is often kept secret, as there is still a stigma attached to it. Many people don’t recognize the amount of suicide in our communities. Currently, suicide deaths in Australia number more than those who die by motor vehicle accidents. More people die by suicide than those who die in all the armed conflicts in the world.
ebruary saw a return to playgroup fun at the Kenilworth State Community College. We cooked and painted, we designed and modelled, we laughed and sang… The term ended on a happy but wet (weather) note when the Prep children joined us to help us with our Easter Egg Hunt and other fun Easter activities.
Again, some people think it is only young people who suicide, although suicide accounted for nearly one-fifth of all deaths amongst young men aged 20 to 34. However, the largest numbers of suicide are in the 30 to 44 age group. 78% of all people who complete suicide are men, although more women attempt suicide.
Rebecca Kemp has kindly volunteered to be our playgroup co-ordinator. This along with the fact that the swimming season is over has allowed us to reschedule playgroup for the more popular Thursday mornings.
Help is at hand! Lifeline’s RISC Coordinator (Responding to Issues of Suicide in Cooloola) will be running an ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) on April 20 and 21. The 2-day workshop will be run in the office building of the Wesleyan Church, Exhibition Rd, Southside from 8:30am to 4:30pm. There is a cost of $50 for the training

Playgroup will recommence on Thursday April 23 at 9am in the old prep rooms. The cost is $1.50 per child. Please bring morning tea for your child, a hat and shoes. Playgroup provides a wonderful learning and social outlet for both children and their carers and the Kenilworth State Community College is proud to provide this service to our community. Please feel free to come along. If you have any queries please ring the College on 5440 0555 or ring or text Rebecca on 0439 337 382. jgMVV0409_LOCK
Because of the silence that surrounds suicide, we are not informed enough on how to be alert to warning signs, what can protect people and the supports that are available in the community.
Next term will see a return to playgroup on THURSDAYS at the usual time of 9 - 11AM.

OUR COMMUNITY Good time had by all at Imbil Campdraft
Imbil
C
attlemen are calling for the Imbil Campdraft to become an annual fixture on the events calendar for the Gympie region after more than 300 people nominated for the event on March 21. It is a gratifying response to the final fundraiser for Gympie Show Society Showgirl entrant Ashleigh Ensbey, who organised the event with her supporting ring committee. The organisers credited a fine weekend, a good crowd of spectators and numerous campers with its success. Ashleigh’s mum Lyndall Ensbey said feedback was extremely positive regarding the perfect preparation of the arena for campdrafting, the quality of the cattle and the tasty roast dinner on Saturday night. She said Australian Institute of Country Music students provided excellent entertainment on Saturday night. Nominations included 145 in the maiden novice draft, 90 in the open draft, 50 in the ladies and 20 in each of the junior and juvenile drafts. Judges included Dale Murray from Proston and John Lindenmayer from Eidsvold. Visit www.maryvalleyvoice.com for results
High Tea at Good Shepherd Lutheran College
Noosa
A
sumptuous array of gourmet treats served on crisp white tablecloths set the mood for High Tea at Good Shepherd Lutheran College recently. Two sittings were conducted as places at the time honoured tradition were in demand. The Year 12 Hospitality class trialled many recipes in the three week lead up to the event before settling on the final selection. Staff enjoyed traditional scones with jam and cream, lemon curd tarts, sandwiches, a selection of French toasts and baguettes alongside the student’s personal favourite, palmiers. Hospitality Teacher, Mrs Trina O’Donnell praised the students, “Most of the students work outside of school hours in the hospitality field, so their experience in the classroom/ kitchen and planning and executing functions such as this definitely augments and reinforces their practices in the workforce. The students have done a wonderful job and feedback from those who have attended has been overwhelming.” Guests also enjoyed beautiful guitar music performed by Year 10 Good Shepherd student, Josh Lewis. All are hoping High Tea becomes a tradition at Good Shepherd in the years to come.

OUR COMMUNITY Maleny Wood Expo Chainsaw to Fine Furniture
H
elp Maleny celebrate our timber heritage!
Maleny
White settlers first came to the Blackall Range in the mid 1800’s to harvest the magnificent red cedars. When cedar supplies ran low, they discovered the beauty of other native rainforest timbers and the love of these timbers lives on in the wood artisans of today. On May 2 and 3, Barung Landcare will host their 13th annual celebration of Australian timbers, the Maleny Wood Expo From Chainsaw to Fine Furniture. Open from 9am to 5pm daily, the Expo is held at the Maleny Showgrounds. The Expo is all about sustainability – of our timber resources, our lifestyles, the food we eat and the natural environment in which we live. All furniture, slabs and boards etc must be sustainably sourced - either sustainably harvested native timbers, or weed, salvaged or recycled timbers. This sustainability theme flows throughout the event: natural resource management displays will highlight regional environmental initiatives; and local boutique produce including wood-fired breads, bushfood condiments and cheeses will be on offer in The Taste Maleny Produce Store. The 2009 Expo will see Stan Ceglinski from northern NSW demonstrating bush and heritage woodcrafting skills from a bygone era, and will host the first ever sawmill showdown on Australian soil. When you need a break you can take time out with a ‘beer & burger’ or sample a rainforest liqueur from the Landcare Bar and BBQ, or sit back with a fair trade latte from Montville Coffee. There’s music and entertainment for the kids and a huge multi-draw raffle with prizes that everyone will love. $10 admission for adults includes parking at the Showgrounds, and children under 16 are free of charge. 2009 Expo Coordinator, Steve McLeish says “You can purchase beautiful products crafted from our unique local timbers and learn about protecting our natural resources for the future. Farm forestry displays and sustainable building alternatives will promote choices we all need to make to sustain our lifestyles into the future,” he said. The 2009 Maleny Wood Expo is supported by Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Caloundra Tourism, as well as many local businesses and organisations.

addi Sandy, a Year 12 student at Noosa District State High School, recently participated in the Queensland Surf Lifesaving Titles at Kawana Beach. Under difficult conditions and against some stiff competition, her team placed third in the U23 surf boat race.
Maddi had prepared for this competition over the previous four months by training up to twelve times a week. Her training regime consisted of both surf and gym sessions as well as other activities such as running up stairs. The school community wishes to congratulate Maddi on her achievement at this recent competition. The attached photograph shows Maddi Sandy with her medal from the Queensland Surf Lifesaving Titles.

At the gala dinner, it was announced that Martha had been selected to represent Australia in the U16 Junior Barra’s team to attend the Arafura Games in Darwin from May 9-17 2009. Martha and her family would like to sincerely thank the Tewantin-Noosa RSL for their financial support.
