QUESTIONS ABOUT BERM TREES OR TREE CARE?
The GF Park District Forestry Department offers consulting services regarding care of trees and shrubs located on private property.
CONTACT US: (701) 746-2750
FORESTRY DEPARTMENT DEFENDERS OF THE TREES
The GF Park District Forestry Department has had jurisdiction over the planting and maintenance of all berm trees in Grand Forks since 1917. The forestry crew maintains over 36,000 berm trees and 8,000 park trees, including 24 different tree species. The horticulture crew plants around 35,000 flowers each spring. Forestry is also responsible for removing old, hazardous, and diseased berm trees. Forestry offers consulting services to homeowners regarding care of trees and shrubs located on private property. The department responds to over 800 calls a year from homeowners requesting a wide range of treatments to be administered to berm trees. Grand Forks is the longest running Tree City USA in ND and celebrates an annual Arbor Day event. (See page 16 for details)
TREE CARE
DUTCH ELM DISEASE
The first case of Dutch Elm Disease in Grand Forks was in 1979. At that time there were 11,800 elms in Grand Forks. Today, due to the efforts of our Dutch Elm Disease Program, 70% of those elms still remain.
EMERALD ASH BORE
The Emerald Ash Bore (EAB), is a woodboring beetle discovered in Southeast Michigan in 2002. EAB is native to eastern Asia, and it is believed that the beetle was unintentionally brought to US in infested ash crates or pallets. For more information regarding tree care and what you can do to prevent Emerald Ash Bore in your city, visit the Forestry page on gfparks.org.

SUPPORTING FAMILIES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR KIDS
Did you know that one in three North Dakota children are overweight/obese? We are fighting to end childhood obesity in Grand Forks youth by getting our kids active. By offering half or full scholarships to low-income qualifying families, we help all children stay active, regardless of their financial restraints. By donating to the Grand Forks Parks & Rec Foundation youth activity scholarship fund, you are giving a child in need the opportunity to get active and live a healthier life!
VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK
With the vision of building a memorial park in Grand Forks where the legacy of American military Veterans can be recognized and honored, the Veterans Memorial Park Campaign was created. Through the efforts of veterans, military members, and their families and friends and supporters, a Veterans Memorial Park will be located northwest of the Columbia Mall and adjacent to the roundabout at 24th Avenue South and 34th Street. With much of the construction occuring in the of Summer 2019, we hope to have the park completed this fall. If you would like to support this project, please contact us.
KEEP THE WHEELS ROLLIN’ RYDELL SKATE PARK
Through generous donors and community support, Phase 1 of a relocated, updated Skatepark opened in September 2018. Rydell Skatepark provides skaters of all ages and their families a safe place to gather. We are currently working to complete the skatepark project by raising the funds needed to build Phase 2 of Rydell Skatepark. Help us make this a reality by getting involved in and donating to the Skatepark Project fundraising campaign. Get involved on social media: #SkateparkGF

SUSTAINABLE RECREATION & CONSERVATION BUILD A LEGACY
MEMORIAL FUNDS & GRANTS Memorial funds are a great way keep your loved one’s memory alive. Their legacy can live on and enhance the lives of our community through the designated area of support within the Grand Forks Park District – i.e. baseball fields, hockey programs, senior fitness, and much more.
CREATE A LASTING IMPACT ENDOWMENTS
Endowments created in memory of loved ones are a lasting tribute that benefits the Grand Forks Park District long into the future by providing meaningful support to our youth, parks, facilities, and recreation programs. Establish a new endowment through the Grand Forks Park & Recreation Foundation that creates a permanent legacy honoring a person, a program, or an area of interest.
PLANT A MEMORIAL TREE LIVING TREE MEMORIAL PROGRAM
The Living Tree Memorial program allows individuals a way to honor and/or memorialize their family or friends with the planting of a tree in a local park. By planting a new tree, you can enhance the park of your choice while creating a lasting impact/memory. Dedication of trees can be – in honor, in memory, or just because.

CHOICE HEALTH & FITNESS
OPENED: SEPTEMBER 2012
The IMAGINE Campaign developed into a project unlike any other in the nation. Now called Choice Health & Fitness, this 162,000 square foot fitness facility is more than just a health club, it’s an experience. It was through creative community collaboration and unique partnerships that this facility was able to create transformational change within our community. If you would like to donate to Choice Health & Fitness to assist with equipment replacement and facility maintenance, please contact us.
ICON SPORTS CENTER OPENED: DECEMBER 2014
The Legends & Heroes Campaign was achieved through the efforts of many hockey and figure skating enthusiasts and the assistance of the GF Park District, the Blue Line Club, and the entire Grand Forks community. ICON Sports Center demonstrates our community’s investment in youth hockey and figure skating, and serves to elevate Grand Forks as a Midwest hockey destination.
SCHEELS SPORTS COMPLEX 4 DIAMONDS BUILT: SUMMER 2017
The ‘Building Fields of Dreams’ Baseball/Softball Campaign, also known as Scheels Sports Complex, was made possible through the gifts of local organizations and individuals passionate about providing needed fields for our youth players. Since built, youth fast pitch softball and baseball have seen explosive participation. In Summer 2015, we broke ground with two diamonds; in Summer 2017, we completed two more diamonds and the main building; and in Summer 2018, we added signage. *As funds become available, we plan to add field lights and more amenities to this destination baseball / softball complex. If you are interested in enhancing the complex by donating to the project, please contact us. 21
