Note from Jill Happy 2013! We are delighted to kick off the New Year with the first 2013 edition of Vero Home, Life & Design magazine. In each issue we strive to bring you a fresh and current view of the amazingly talented residents and unique businesses that make Vero Beach the exceptional community it is. For this issue, two things, Valentine’s Day and the great American classic The Great Gatsby, primarily inspired us. Look for a vintage - inspired fashion spread, along with a selection of gift ideas we gathered from around town. We will take you on a tour of two beautiful new island homes, as well. I truly hope you enjoy this issue. VHL&D is a magazine with you in mind. If you have an interesting idea or something you would like to share, please send me an e-mail and I will be sure to reply. Here’s wishing everyone a wonderful and joyous New Year, with a reminder to please shop locally when you can.

1. I am a native Floridian. I grew up in Coconut Grove and have lived and had a business in Vero for five years. 2. Initially I came to Vero to work in interior design, but quickly realized there were as many designers as realtors. First I opened a fish store, and then restaurant, Bodega Blue and now Vinz Wining and Dining is my newest venture. 3. Florida stone crabs and lobster are my favorite foods. Any kind of shellfish is wonderful. 4. Cooking is my therapy; I love making new things - anything from soups to paella. 5. The best part of being a restaurant owner is the social aspect. I enjoy pleasing people with food creations and my favorite wine selections. It feels good to be able to create a nice atmosphere where people can gather together. things
five
1. I arrived in Vero Beach the second week of September of 2012 for the position of General Manager of The Vero Beach Hotel and Spa. 2. I think one misconception about my line of work is that we work too many hours. Like many other jobs, we work hard, gain the necessary experience, and work our way up. We really do not work loads of hours. Kimpton Hotels really has a healthy philosophy on that sort of balance. How can we possibly be hospitable in a job of hospitality if we are dog tired? Certainly we can’t be. 3. My favorite part about this job is that it is so varied. I like getting around, being around, running around, not being tied down to an office. I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life, interesting people. My least favorite aspect is the opposite side of the coin- the people who are not so gracious. I am okay with challenges and trying to accommodate people, but those who cannot be placated are difficult. 4. My favorite guilty pleasure? Oh…dark chocolate! I have developed a taste for Godiva dark chocolate. I think my body clock has turned and I can quite easily eat a load of it. 5. The most fascinating place I have visited is Vumba, Zimbabwe. It just took my breath away! I spent three weeks there. It is amazing because of the vast panoramic views. They call it “The Scottish Highlands in Africa” because it is so green with varied terrain; you can see the ocean one way and the African plains the other. a weekend getaway
Valentine’s Day-Vero Style F
Written by Elaine Ryan
ebruary has long been recognized as the month of romance, with The Fourteenth representing the pinnacle of love. Valentine’s Day contains vestiges in both Christian and ancient Roman traditions. We can trace many of this holiday’s practices back to customs of Victorian England, as well. By the early seventeen hundreds, Americans were exchanging handmade cards and small tokens of affection to express their emotions in a time when direct communication of feelings was often discouraged. Love it or loath it, adore it or apprehend it, Valentine’s Day is almost upon us. We researched everything locally—from chocolates to cufflinks—to assist you in finding the perfect gift for your sweetie. Here’s help for the hopeless romantic and reluctant lover, alike. Vero Beach is a special place, catering to a wide variety of pastimes and personalities. As residents, we enjoy the sun’s warm rays most days, drinking in the sweet sea air until intoxicated. We find ourselves fishing in boardshorts by day, and dressing up for beachside affairs by nightfall. It is quite possible we often overlook the diversity here. It is easy to take for granted the miles of pristine beaches available to us, the unspoiled hiking trails reminiscent of Old Florida, and the delightful void of metropolitan traffic. Beyond the enchanting allure and magnetic pull of the obvious environmental beauty, however, Vero Beach hosts several unique shops, hotels, and boutiques unparalleled. These businesses decorate the streets of our quaint town. Because it has largely remained true to its small town roots, Vero is a place of great nostalgic romance. Progressive enough to cater to the most discerning tastes, but somewhat seemingly sleepy and still lost in time, this town is the backdrop for anyone who desires a storybook romantic weekend getaway or, our favorite, a rejuvenating staycation. Sweets for your sweet T h at a r e R e a l ly G o o d f o r yo u ! How long have you lived and been in business in Vero? I have lived in Vero Beach for 13 years now and we opened Faith, Hope and Chocolate! in October of 2006.
What brought you here? I was living in Plantation Florida and did not want to raise my children there. I drove the entire state and when I arrived in Vero I just felt something special. In all honesty, it was the trees that grabbed me and then to later find out that we are called ‘‘ The Tree City’’ sealed the deal. Continued on next page

Gina Battle Faith, Hope and Chocolate! 2101 Indian River Blvd, Suite 108 772-567-1414 E-mail: faithhopeandchoc@bellsouth.net
What is a common misconception about chocolate? There are many myths that are not true. Chocolate is not fattening, does not contain lots of caffeine, does not cause acne and does not give you a sugar rush. Chocolate is a slow glycemic food and it actually regulates your blood sugar levels and blood pressure. It is gluten free and helps prevent cholesterol; increases blood flow to the brain, therefore making it a medicinal food to help prevent strokes. Chocolate also increases serotonin in your brain, which gives you that feel good feeling. Magnesium in chocolate helps prevent migraines and anxiety, helps with anemia, as well as kidney stones. All these health benefits relate to dark chocolate and real chocolate. In other words, these benefits are not connected to the massproduced chocolate found in standard stores with preservatives, fillers and over processed. Raw chocolate is the healthiest and highest antioxidant food on the planet!
{
God created chocolate to spread love and joy.
{
What are your average customers looking for here, a gift or something for themselves? We have certainly become a specialty gift store, but many customers come in for their chocolate fix. I would almost say it is close to 50/50.
Do you do much work with or for parties? Yes, we do favors of any size and budget for weddings, anniversary parties, baby showers and milestone birthdays. We work with many non-profit events in town in addition to doing any volume size corporate orders. We have also done truffle platters. My background is in catering.
Anything else you want to share? Yes, after almost 7 years of sharing fine chocolates with this community, we are convinced that God created chocolate to spread love and joy. Almost every customer comes in and lets us know why they are purchasing a box of chocolates for their loved ones, either they just found out they have breast cancer, or they are visiting someone in hospice, or just to brighten someone’s day. Chocolate is a personal and comforting gift on every level. Something people may not know is the chocolatiers we provide here are the tops in their field. We are the only boutique in the state that offers them. Photographers Aric Attas and Andrea Geldres

How long have you lived in Vero Beach and what brought you here?
{
I design everything with the care and concern as though it was for me.
{
I was born in Santa Barbara, CA and moved to Palm Beach with my parents at the age of three. Shortly thereafter, my family moved to Vero Beach where I began kindergarten and went through the entire Vero Beach school system. I have lived in Vero Beach as my primary home since 1970, now nearly 43 years.
Tell us about the renovation of the building? I had a very clear vision for the building when I took over. I wanted to create the feeling of a home more than a retail building. Hardly a day goes by that someone does not come into the showroom and offer praise for the renovation. What was once a nondescript building has been transformed into one of the beachside’s jewels.
What led you to opening a home furnishings store? I added the interior decor and home decorating aspect of my business due to the demand. Vero Beach, especially the beachside, was lacking a retail environment where one could walk in and walk out with lamps, paintings, furniture, etc. Clients seem to want immediate gratification. Most are not interested in waiting 10 to 14 weeks for delivery. Another key element for opening the showroom is while working on a design installation, I can pull pieces directly from my showroom and place them in the room for the client’s review. If the piece does not work then it can go directly back into the showroom.

What would be your dream project? I would have to say designing and renovating a spec home would be my dream. Taking a raw vision, creating, building, renovating and then finding a buyer to fall in love with my work would be ideal. I am currently in the beginning phase of making this a reality.
What is your favorite item in the store right now? I would have to say everything. I do not buy on trend: I purely buy only items that I truly love, items that I could easily incorporate into my own home. I think it is one of the keys to the success of my retail storefront – the fact that this showroom is a very clear and true representation of my personal taste.
What is your favorite part of being a retail store owner/floral designer? Without a doubt the best part of my job is meeting and exceeding the expectations of my clients. My greatest reward is the praise I receive from my clients, whether an interior decorating project, a wedding, a party or simply flowers for a client’s coffee table. I put my heart and soul into every task I undertake, I design everything with the care and concern as though it was for myself and I am my toughest critic.
What is your favorite flower? Any variety and/or color of hydrangea is not only my favorite flower, but is also my signature flower. With it’s Southern heritage, nothing could be more Southern than a beautiful hydrangea.
Best advice you have ever received? Believe in yourself and never give up. I have had many challenges and great hurdles throughout my career, yet I have always believed in myself and my abilities. I am extremely driven and have a great inner need to succeed.
If I weren’t doing what I am doing today... I cannot imagine myself doing anything else. I have been in this business since the age of 16 and it is all that I know and what I truly love. I am so lucky and blessed. Working so closely with my clients over months and years on projects affords me the opportunity to get to know my clients and, in most cases, we become lifelong friends. The soundtrack of my life is... “Just the Way You Are”.

Mission on the Move The Green Patrol Shawn Frost The Green Patrol 772-453-2800 www.thegreenpatrol.org
Interview with Shawn Frost. By Mark Sartain
What is The Green Patrol? The Green Patrol is a non-profit organization; a group of dedicated volunteers interested in moving, connecting and empowering members of our human family to keep things clean, green and pristine.
When did you start The Green Patrol? We started The Green Patrol officially in July 2012.
What prompted you to start The Green Patrol and pursue its mission? I used to compete in marathons and help people train. I was the crazy person who would run around picking up litter as I went. After an accident, I was not able to run anymore and I knew the litter wouldn’t just go away. So, I developed the Green Patroller prototype, now manufactured by Robstep, USA. It is a system that lets us go around and pick up litter and sort through it for event recycling.
Was anyone out there keeping things clean and green before The Green Patrol? A few really good organizations have cleanup events one day a year, which is good. Our goal is to stop the broken window effect. When a neighborhood is in decline, if there is a broken window, it’s easier to throw that third or fourth rock. The same is true for litter. If you see everything as nice and clean it creates a psychological conflict within you to throw something down. That is why our concept is to keep things clean, green and pristine; it makes it easier for others to do the same.
{ 36

What type of events can we see The Green Patrol at? We are working almost every weekend and we are at just about anything from the Sebastian Clam Bake to the St. Helen’s harvest festival, and the Jake Owen concert. For more Q&A with Shawn, visit www.VeroHomeLifeAndDesign.com

Today homes are built with easy family living in mind. Gone are the days of stuffy living rooms that were reserved for use on special occasions only. Today we live in great rooms that combine several rooms in one vast open space.
Located midway north on the barrier island is where you can find the quaint community of Palm Island Plantation by Westmark construciton. Amid the custom homes and condominium residences you will find two story townhomes completed in 2012. The townhomes feature three bedrooms, three baths in addition to a powder bath all in roughly 2500 square feet of air conditioned living area.

The Dining Room.
Kitchen
Upon passing through the entry gate on the left side of the home, you enter a lovely open courtyard area that houses an outdoor fireplace, as well as a trickling fountain at the far end of the courtyard. There are several French doors and one stained mahogany door decidedly the main entry. As you enter you are greeted by stairs that lead to the second floor. Rather than head up stairs, turning to the left toward the great room you come upon the dining area. A playful wide horizontal stripe of white and yellow is painted on the wall and brings a real energy to the room. Simple furnishing sit handsomely against the painted backdrop and include a planked top dining table, contemporary Chippendale style chairs along with tufted upholstered host chairs all in a vibrant white. A much smaller stripe is found in the casual area rug of different shades of blue, a delightful compliment to the yellow of the walls. The open floor plan of the great room includes the kitchen, a breakfast area and living room, all open to one another. The kitchen’s white cabinets and Carrera marble countertops are beautifully highlighted by the linear mosaic back splash. A built-in bench seat at the far end of the kitchen island allows room for several to sit at the weathered breakfast table that is surrounded by wicker arm chairs on the opposite side. This is the perfect space for informal meals and family gatherings. The living room is comfortable, bright and cheerful with a soft subtle color palate of green, beige and white. The dark wood floors in a seven inch plank add to the beachy casual feel of the room, while stained wood beams above add depth and richness. Continued on next page

PRECISION PILATES Barbara Shugrue Precision Pilates 1250 Old Dixie Highway 772-559-8877
How long have you lived and been in business in Vero? My husband and I settled in Vero Beach in 1996. I opened Precision Pilates at Christi’s Family Fitness in January 2001.
What people, influences, events or desires led you to your profession? After 15 years in yachting, I decided it was time for a career change. I chose personal training because exercise was what I most enjoyed in my time off. As they say, choose a job doing what you love. My travels on boats enabled me to meet some of the best fitness instructors on the East Coast. They inspired and encouraged me to pursue personal training. To get certified, I enrolled in Strong, Stretched & Centered, an intensive instructor training in Maui. It was, without question, a life-altering experience. The exotic beauty of the island was wonderful, but the people were the most fascinating. They were unconventional in a Bohemian way and each had amazing stories and histories of how they came to be there. The program’s concepts of mind/body practices and functional training were way ahead of their time by integrating anatomy, biomechanics, weight training, and nutrition combined with Yoga, Tai Chi, guided meditations and Pilates.
What is the most common misconception that people have about your line of work? That I spend all day “doing” Pilates. My time is actually invested in teaching and observing.
How is Pilates different from strength training? Pilates is strength training. Pilates focuses on strengthening the deeper stabilizer and postural muscles, integrating them with movement of the extremities in a balanced way.

REDCORD速
What are RedCord速 and OmGym and what are the benefits? REDCORD 速 Active system reactivates muscles that have been disengaged due to injury, misuse or imbalance. It allows you to load or unload joints or muscle groups to target the activation or isolation of a muscle or group. It can accommodate all clients, regardless of movement limitations or restrictions. REDCORD 速 can also challenge the most elite athlete by lifting body weight in an unstable but biomechanically safe mode.

About us We have lived in Vero two years and opened Flex Fitness last April. Lee and I actually went to high school together; we ran into each other post-college at a mutual friend’s house and hit it off. The most common misconception people have about yoga is that it is easy. Sure, like anything else you can have an easy practice, (you can walk not run) but there are so many styles of yoga available it is really whatever you want it to be. Yoga can get and keep you in shape if that’s what you’re looking for, or it can be a place to come where you turn to still your mind and relax, or a combination. It is up to you. The most amazing aspect of yoga is whatever you come to it seeking you will find and if you stick with it, you’ll discover more than you ever hoped. The most common misconception about training is that a trainer cannot do anything for you that you cannot do on your own. That’s what I thought. Boy was I wrong. Our trainers not only push you harder, but keep your sessions varied so you continue to see results. The most incredible thing about working with our trainer’s is that they become almost like a doctor for your physique. They know your body. They focus in on your problem areas and help you improve upon them and unlike a friend or partner they are completely objective. So if your thighs are fat, they’re going to tell you, and then help you fix it.
The most common misconception people have about yoga is that it is easy.
Most people think they already eat healthfully. What they often do not realize is that it’s not just what they eat, it’s when they eat, how much and in what combinations. Once you learn the proper way to fuel your body, you’ll never need to diet again. I eat more than I ever did before and weigh less. That’s the way it should work! Food is fuel. About us Rob and I both started elementary school here in Vero and we each moved away after high school. We vowed to never return and here we are! We were acquaintances in high school, sparked up a conversation at our ten-year high school reunion. We started dating, got married, and the rest is history. In March of 2013 we will have been operating Crossfit Vero Beach for four years. We are proud to have introduced people to a way to change their lives. If you look around our gym, you will find people who have lost more than fifty pounds, grandmothers who can now climb a rope or do a pull-up, women who can lift more than their body weight and people who were able to come off of prescription medications through exercise. This makes both of us feel good. The only day we are not in the gym is Sunday, so we like to be lazy! We take our French Bulldogs to the dog park, maybe go to a movie or visit with family. I like to watch trash TV, Rob will take a nap, and we love to BBQ.

About us How long have you lived in Vero? Meredith: I have lived here off and on for the last eight years. Jim: I moved here a year and a half ago after we got married. How long has Runner’s Depot been in Vero? Is that what brought you here? Meredith: Yes, my parents opened the store eight years ago. I have been working at the running store, and Jim moved down from Melbourne to join me. How did you two meet? We met on the cross country team at Florida State University. How did the idea for the Running Camp come about? Jim: People were often coming to us for advice on how to get started running, or how to increase their mileage or improve race times. We wanted to offer a quality coaching program to address both the beginner runner and the more advanced. Our group meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the option to come to the 5:30 am or the 6:15 pm workout. We also host an optional longer run on Sundays at 7:00 am. The next camp begins in February. What is the best advice you have ever received? Meredith: “Love many, trust few, always paddle your own canoe.” Jim: “Stay far from timid, only make moves when your heart’s in it, and live the phrase, ‘The sky is the limit’. “ If you weren’t running you would be: Meredith: Bored, with a lot of free time on my hands. Jim: A professional kickball player.

Christi: Steve and I met at The University of Florida and moved to Vero in 1993. We opened Christi’s Family Fitness in January of 1997. Christi: My perfect day would be full of sunshine and spending time with family doing something active. Our kids are 13 and 17 and we love attending sporting events together as a family. Christi: I love music, especially John Mayer and Jason Mraz. I like to incorporate music in my fitness classes. I teach Spin, Step and Group Power. Steve: The best advice I have ever received is to “treat others as you would like to be treated”. We try to operate our club as we would like to be cared for at a gym. Steve: If I was not doing what I am doing today I would like to be a professional tennis player. Steve: The last book I read was Satisfaction: How every Great Company Listens to the Voice of the Customer by Chris Denove and James D. Power. About us Tonya: I moved to Sebastian in January 2003 and purchased Sebastian Gym & Fitness in November of that year. Ken moved to Sebastian in 2004 from Lighthouse Point, Florida where he had owned and operated a gym for 15 years. We met at Sebastian Gym & Fitness in 2004 and became fast friends. We started dating five years later and have just become engaged. One of the most common mistakes in training is the fear of asking for help. It is easy to get stuck in the same routine. Asking for help and changing a workout benefits everyone. Ken: Growing up in New Jersey, I competed as a teenage body builder. At 21 years old I decided to open my own gym. At 24 I became “Mr. New Jersey” and then at 28 moved to south Florida and became “Mr. Florida” in 1991. Ken: Throughout my years of competing I also helped train other clients who wanted to compete. Today I still enjoy helping people achieve their goals. We both enjoy what we do.
If I was not doing what we do today, I know we would both want to be in some field where we help people.

Treat your body like you treat your bank account.
Bonnie: We came to Vero in 2003 to start a gym. We loved that it is such an active community. We were overwhelmed with how many people were outside; even the senior citizens were rollerblading. It just felt like home instantly. Bonnie: Steve and I met in my home town Tallahassee while Steve was going to school at FSU and working as a bouncer at a bar. He carded me at the door and we went from there. Bonnie: The best advice I have ever received is to have more fun and not take things so seriously.

Bonnie: If I had to choose the soundtrack to my life it would be Ozzie Osborne, “Crazy Train”? Or maybe “Wild at Heart” is more appropriate? Bonnie: Anyone who knows me knows my guilty pleasure is chips, salsa and guacamole! Our best training advice is to treat your body like you treat your bank account—your body’s balance determines what you can afford to eat and where you need to budget calories. The more you eat, the more you have to work to keep it off. You have to balance your caloric intake with the amount you exercise. January-February 2013 | VeroHomeLifeAndDesign.com

In my first year I produced about 55,000 pops.
Michael Haggerty Hero Pops 772-713-9220 E-mail: heropops@gmail.com
1. I moved to Vero from Atlanta in December of 2010 and opened Hero Pops in September of 2011. I was born in Boca Raton and grew up there, but my family has been in Vero 15 years now. I started coming to visit them and realized how much I missed the ocean. 2. Most of the ingredients in Hero Pops are from the health food store but I also buy fresh citrus and other ingredients from local sources when they are in season. People commonly think Hero Pops are junk food. Most of the factory pops available are junk. I, however, scrutinize every ingredient before I allow it into a Hero Pop. As a result, the pops I produce now are among the healthiest foods. They are low in fat and sugar (I am now making sugar-free as well) and contain some vitaminrich beneficial foods and super foods like hibiscus, rose hips, pomegranate, and ginger to name a few. 3. I get allot of advice – there is never a shortage of free advice. “You have to get on ‘Shark Tank’”, “You should sell soup”, and even the occasional vagrant will offer me advice. One said I have the best smelling hot dogs in Vero?!? But the best advice I have ever heard has to be from the inventor of Jelly Belly, David Klein. David quit law school in the late 70’s to make gourmet jelly beans, something that had never been done before. I am sure he faced much ridicule and his advice was not to listen to most of the advice you get. It may not make sense to others what you are doing, but if you work hard and never quit, your vision will become reality. 4. You can purchase Hero Pops at Heathway of Vero, Cravings, Village Beach Market, Classy Cupcakes, Nature’s Market of Melbourne, Nutrition S’mart in Port St. Lucie, P.P. Cobb’s General Store in Ft. Pierce, and Nutrition World in Ft. Pierce. You can also find out what green markets and events we are doing on our Hero Pops Facebook page. FYI: Popsicle is trademarked; I make Hero Pops or pops.

1. Kevin has lived in Vero twenty-one years and I have been here for ten years. 2. We have been working at the Farmer’s Market for 2½ years. We are currently moving into Elizabeth Kennedy’s catering space on Miracle Mile. There is a real need for a place in our community where people can come together and enjoy organic vegetables and socialize. 3. More and more people are interested in eating organically and in understanding preventative health practices these days. Even younger people in their twenties are concerned with the idea that they are not inheriting a clean earth, so that is a good facilitator for change. 4. Hippocrates said it best, “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food”. Juicing is an excellent way to infuse nutrients into your body which then allows our bodies to absorb enzymes and vitamins we do not get in the traditional American diet. 5. Our “Divine Blend” is my favorite juice concoction. It is loaded with dark, leafy greens like kale, and then mixed with cucumber, celery, carrots, apples, beets, ginger, and lemon.

Central Beach Charmer Custom Built by Matherne Construction

VeroHomeLifeAndDesign.com | January-February 2013
Written by Jill Shevlin I had the privilege of touring this lovely Central Beach home custom built in 2012 just a week or so after the moving trucks had pulled out of the driveway for the last time. Even though the homeowners had just moved in, there was an easy, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. That quality may have been summoned due to the open floor plan of the home, or more likely the homeowner’s collections which fill the household with love and personality.
Upon entering you are greeted by a collection of old barn keys strikingly displayed at the bottom of the staircase. The homeowners tell me they have been collecting the keys for years and each one has its own unique story of where it was found. At the entry, there is also a collection of pottery resting at the base of stairs that lead to the second floor bedrooms. To the left we immediately enter a cozy den that comfortably houses a library of books mixed with folk art and interesting decorative objects collected over time. Four chairs upholstered in a pale pink surrounding an ottoman make this room perfect for reading, relaxing or watching TV. The walls throughout are a pale off white with a hint of yellow, a perfect backdrop to the white details of the woodwork throughout.
The Dining Room features Windsor arm chairs around a farm style table. An enchanting candle burning fixture hangs above the table and a beautiful, simple corner hutch stands tall in one corner. The Dining Area is anchored by an oriental area rug.

How long have you lived in Vero? My partner of 20 years Jim Haigney, and I have lived full time in Vero for the past 12 years.
What brought you here? I have known and visited Vero since 1980. My brother, Joe Sanchez was a sportscaster for WTTB radio, as well as an announcer for the Dodgers at Dodger Town. Joe and his wife, Pam moved to Vero from New York to start a family. I visited during the holidays and summer months. I painted while here and knew that this was where I would live when I retired. Where do you get your inspiration? Inspiration comes when I least expect it. It is truly important for me to paint on a daily basis. By doing this, my work progresses and changes. It is a process I have found that is conscious of change and makes me aware of inspiring ideas, ready to explore them.
Who are some artists that have inspired you? I have often been influenced by all of the abstract expressionists. Currently, I have been exploring Richard Diebenkorn’s work and I have utilized some of his techniques in my own work. One of my favorite painters is John Singer Sargent, an American artist at the turn of the century, who painted fashionable portraits in Paris and London.
How has your work changed over time? My work has gone through various periods, yet they all reflect my ongoing premise of utilizing color, line and form in an expressive manner. I always show the hand of the artist, whether it be in the brushstroke or in expressive use of paint. Paintings, to me, should look painted and not refined to the point of omission of evidence in the paintings process.
What is your favorite part of being an artist? I suppose the best part of being an artist is the fact that you are privy to create beauty and extend to others. A painting is a coveted and unique record of an artistic process. To own a painting is a unique and sought-after privilege. An appreciation of art is something that can be self-taught or developed over time by reading and seeing. We are fortunate in Vero to have a museum with such a high caliber of work and exhibitions. I am proud that The Vero Beach Museum of Art is here and that it is solely supported by patrons.
What is the best advise you have been given? At my high school graduation our very erudite superintendent of schools gave a keynote address and said, “There is no such thing as a free lunch”. It was, indeed a humorous, yet wise discourse on the importance of self-reliance. Somehow, I never forgot it and have always found that hard and steady work will enable you to realize your dreams.
Where can we see or purchase your work? My home is my best gallery and is open to all those who are interested in seeing my work. We have many of my works hung throughout the house. People who visit will see an abstract painting that works nicely over a Sheraton buffet or a cabbage printed sofa. I find that most people are more apt and comfortable in making a purchase once they have seen my work placed in a home.

How long have you lived in Vero and what brought you here originally? I have lived in Vero for twenty years. My husband’s job moved us here. I thought I would retire and play tennis, but I started to go stir crazy. I met a therapist who offered me a part time position, so I went back to doing therapy with an emphasis on anxiety, trauma, and sexual abuse. I always did volunteer work however, even while staying in clinical work.
How did you come to be involved with Impact 100? I became involved with Impact 100 when Eleonora McCabe asked five women to help organize this group in 2008. Our initial goal was to get 100 women for one grant of $100,000. Our first year, we raised more than $200,000 and were able to give out two grants. It was amazing. I was approached and asked to be part of the leadership team, which was a huge honor. I am hooked on Impact 100 because ours is the only organization that provides on the level that we do.
Tell us what you love about being involved with Impact 100? I love that the women are so different and each woman brings her own specialty to the table. This is the fifth year and we are trying to be more purposeful with experience. I love that Impact 100 has grown so organically. I love that it is all women who want to give back to the community. I also love that there are only two requirements to be part of Impact 100: you must be a woman and you have to give $1,000. You may be involved as simply as writing a check, or you can volunteer in a number of ways.
What is the best advise anyone has ever given you? My father used to always give great advice. He had an office in New York City, but we lived in New Jersey. I would take the bus alone into Port Authority to visit him at work. He would often advise me on personality. I was a very shy child, but he told me that if I ever wanted to make anything of myself, I would have to be outgoing. He always told me not to hide behind my mother’s skirt.

How did you become involved with Impact 100? I had a good friend who knew I had a background in PR with IBM at the Kennedy Space Center. I joined Impact 100 the very first year because it’s a wonderful concept that is so easy. It is such a great feeling to know we are making such a large impact on the community.
What is your favorite thing about being involved with this organization? Impact 100 is wonderful because it empowers women. I am able to use my writing skills and PR expertise for a good cause, and that is empowering. I am so impressed with the caliber of strong and intelligent women Impact 100 attracts. It’s nice to have a common goal together.
Was there anything surprising or unexpected you have experienced now that you are so involved? The commitment of the women on the board is amazing. The professionalism of the women has been pleasantly surprising. We have women from all walks of life. Now that I am on the board and the executive committee, it is even more apparent just how efficient Impact 100 is, and that is highly satisfying. Something else surprising is that not all of our women are wealthy, but they each really want to make a difference in the community. Even if they do not have a lot of time because they are working women, they can contribute funds and make a huge impact.

How long have you lived in Vero and what brought you here originally? I have lived in Vero since 2003. My husband’s company brought us here.
How did you become involved with Impact 100? I first went to their annual breakfast at Costa De Este and learned about it through Women in Philanthropy. I joined Impact 100 in 2009 as a member, but then began serving on the grants panel. I learned so much about the nonprofits in our community and the grant process.
What do you like most about the organization? The concept of Impact 100 is so great. I think it is amazing to collectively bring a relatively small amount of money to the table and combine it to make such a huge impact on the community. I think about the impact we made on the lagoon. Now that we live on the river, I am so aware of how many birds there really are and the fish they depend on and our delicate ecosystem. We are making a difference in long term projects that directly impact our lives daily, even if we are not always acutely aware of it.
If you weren’t an attorney, what would you be?

I would be a chef or restaurateur. I love cooking different types of food. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania where every dish was heavy casseroles. When I was in high school, I worked at a sub shop and learned how to cook. I love providing love for my family through serving food. I am content to be relaxing at home, a glass of wine in hand, music playing, and baking cookies with my kids. My restaurant would be a collection of many different types of food. I would call it, “Rebecca’s Best Dishes” or “My Favorite Things”. For more Q&A with Rebecca Emmons, visit www.VeroHomeLifeAndDesign.com
How long have you lived in Vero and what originally brought you here? My husband has been here for more than twenty years. He is in the citrus business, Evans Properties. I came to Vero in 2007 to join him. I was living in Tampa where I first met him. We got married and built a house in Vero together.
What is your favorite part about this organization? I love the collective philanthropy. It is such a great organization for women to make that much of a difference in the community. It’s great that there is just a flat fee of $1000 to get involved with no other hidden costs.
To what degree are you involved, despite the fact that you have so many other activities and obligations? I serve on the board of Impact 100. I am helping with “Impact Day”, which is part of our Special Events. This is a day when our Community Partners – our grant recipients – open their doors so we can see the impact that is being made with the funds allocated. It’s really exciting.
Tell us something about who you are and how that lends to your hand in Impact 100? I am very organized. I am proactive and a real planner to balance it all. I am almost an enabler to those around me because I want to help everyone with his or her schedule. I have really high expectations of myself, and therefore, of others. How long have you lived in Vero? Why did you move here originally? My husband and I bought a house here in 1992 for vacation and then became permanent residents in 1999. We had friends who lived here, and when we came to visit, we just fell in love with the community. We were helping raise our grandchildren and we wanted to live somewhere the kids could be outdoors; Florida was an obvious choice for outdoor living.
How did you become involved in Impact 100? My neighbor, Sherry Brown, was involved and brought me onboard in 2009. I signed up for the grant reviews panel. It was a wonderful experience to see the nonprofits in action and learn about the people so committed to helping other people improve their lives through providing more resources.
What is your favorite part about being involved with this organization? The women of Impact 100 are so dedicated to the mission, all the way to the bottom of their toes. They inspire me. The beauty of Impact 100 is we can be involved as much or as little as we like.
How much time do you find you devote to Impact 100? I have been involved with the grant process, which can be rather intense with site visits. We have to make the best choices for where the money is allocated. I am in charge of the website, which has periods of intense activity. I have to make changes to the website. We are in the process of making it more efficient and streamlined.
