Caring for Kids from Hard Places

How to Help Children and Teens with a Traumatic Past Jayne E. Schooler, David L. Schooler, Th.D.

Summary

National and international ministry leaders: pastors, youth pastors, children's ministry workers, church camp leaders, private and public school teachers, and orphan caregivers. Also social workers, mental health professionals, psychologists, and adoption ministries in churches.

Why doesn’t he act his age? Why does she behave so impulsively? Why does he have meltdowns so often?

There is always meaning behind behavior in all of us. It might be a behavioral reaction from something as simple as hunger or exhaustion. Or something far more serious – a triggered reaction to a traumatic, frightening experience.

Children who have experienced early childhood neglect or trauma are often greatly impacted in developmental ways. Children in foster care or who are given up for adoption often deal with these kinds of negative early experiences and it can be difficult to know how to help. People who teach–either in school or children’s ministry often see these youngsters’ behavior as confusing and don’t understand why.

In Caring for Kids from Hard Places, Jayne and David Schooler discuss the reasons behind why children and teens sometimes exhibit potentially disruptive behavior. Together, they offer practical strategies on training, equipping and resourcing staff and volunteers ...

The Understory

An Invitation to Rootedness and Resilience from the Forest Floor

Lore Ferguson Wilbert

Summary

A popular writer explores what the forest teaches us about living amid death and decay, helping us examine what's beneath the surface of our long-held beliefs and consider what it means to grieve, remember, and hope.

"Walk in the woods with me."

That's the invitation award-winning author Lore Ferguson Wilbert extends to readers in The Understory.

On this journey, Wilbert shares her story of alienation and disorientation after years of religious and political unrest in the evangelical church. In doing so, she looks to an unlikely place--the forest--to learn how to live and even thrive when everything seems to be falling apart. What can we learn from eroding soil, the decomposition process, the time it takes to grow lichen, the beauty of fiddlehead ferns, the regeneration of self-sowing seeds, and walking through the mud? Here, among the understory of the forest, Wilbert discovers rich metaphors for living a rooted and flourishing life within the complex ecosystems of our world. Her tenderness and honesty will help readers grieve, remember, hope, and press on with resilience.

Fully Alive

Tending to the Soul in Turbulent Times

Elizabeth Oldfield

Summary

Scholar and popular podcaster Elizabeth Oldfield shows why, in a world stripped of both forgiveness and responsibility but heavy on judgment, she still finds the concept of sin liberating--and how, to her surprise, she keeps finding the Christian faith a source of spiritual strength when things fall...

In a world experiencing turbulent change, we need people who are resilient, kind, open, generous, and brave. How do we become those people?

In Fully Alive, scholar and popular podcaster Elizabeth Oldfield uses the seven deadly sins as a framework to explore questions such as:

· How can I move from sloth to attention in order to make the most of my short life and stop getting distracted by trivialities?

· Is it possible to move from wrath to peacemaking? How do I become a depolarizing person in an age of outrage, tribalism, and division?

· What might it look like to move from gluttony to awe, finding transcendence in expansive, life-giving ways--not in the bottom of a tub of ice cream?

· How can I move from pride to connection, overcoming the disconnection that keeps me from intimacy, community, and ultimately from the divine?

Oldfield shows why, in a world heavy on judgment, she still finds the concept of sin liberating--and how, to her surprise, she keeps finding in her Christian faith ways...

The Drama of Scripture (3rd

Edition)

Finding Our Place in the Biblical Story

Summary

This updated edition of a bestselling textbook surveys the grand narrative of the Bible, demonstrating how the biblical story forms the foundation of a Christian worldview.

The story of the Bible and its account of God's action in the world give meaning to our lives and provide us with the foundation for our actions.

In this bestselling textbook, Craig Bartholomew and Michael Goheen survey the grand narrative of the Bible, demonstrating how the biblical story forms the foundation of a Christian worldview. In considering the biblical story, the authors emphasize the unity of the whole, viewing the Bible as a drama in six acts: creation, sin, Israel, Christ, church, and new creation. Two overarching themes--covenant in the Old Testament and kingdom in the New Testament--tie the biblical story together. Throughout, the authors suggest, God is revealed through the story and calls us to participate in his drama.

The third edition has been updated and revised throughout. Additional resources for students and professors are available through Textbook eSources.

Defending Sin

A Response to the Challenges of Evolution and the Natural Sciences

Summary

Offers a striking biblical and theological account of the doctrine of sin in dialogue with difficult questions from the natural sciences, helping readers engage with a range of controversial debates surrounding human origins, the fall, and original sin.

The conflict between the natural sciences and Christian theology has been going on for centuries. Recent advances in the fields of evolutionary biology, behavioral genetics, and neuroscience have intensified this conflict, particularly in relation to origins, the fall, and sin. These debates are crucial to our understanding of human sinfulness and necessarily involve the doctrine of salvation. Theistic evolutionists have labored hard to resolve these tensions between science and faith, but Hans Madueme argues that the majority of their proposals do injustice both to biblical teaching and to long-standing doctrines held by the mainstream Christian tradition.

In this major contribution to the field of science and religion, Madueme demonstrates that the classical notion of sin reflected in Scripture, the creeds, and tradition offers the most compelling and theologically coherent account of the human condition. He answers pressing challenges from the physical sciences on both methodological...

A Short Guide to Spiritual Formation

Finding Life in Truth, Goodness, Beauty, and Community

Summary

Weaving together church history, theology, and devotional practice, this introductory guide to spiritual formation retrieves the traditions rooted in truth, goodness, beauty, and community to help students follow the way of Jesus.

In a society always seeking the new and novel, Christians can become more grounded and mature through a retrieval of our common tradition. Alex Sosler sets forth the "transcendentals" of truth, goodness, and beauty--along with community--to help readers follow the way of Jesus.

Weaving together church history, theology, and devotional practice, Sosler offers a holistic introduction to spiritual formation, encompassing biblical truth, the pursuit of the good life, the contemplation of God, and communal belonging. Each section includes a biblical and historical precedent for the tradition and highlights an exemplar from church history: Augustine on truth, Dorothy Day on goodness, Teresa of Ávila on beauty, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer on church commitment and community.

This accessible book provides avenues for a broader and deeper spirituality that can shape the complexity of our souls. It is ideal for undergraduate students and as a formation primer for church adult education classes, classic...

Deep Reading Practices to Subvert the Vices of Our Distracted, Hostile, and Consumeristic Age

Julie Ooms, Rachel M. De

Summary

Presenting reading as a remedy for prevalent cultural vices--distraction, hostility, and consumerism--this book helps educators, students, and other readers to contribute to the flourishing of their communities and cultivate their own spiritual and intellectual depth.

This book helps readers develop practices that will result in deep, formative, and faithful reading so they can contribute to the flourishing of their communities and cultivate their own spiritual and intellectual depth.

The authors present reading as a remedy for three prevalent cultural vices--distraction, hostility, and consumerism--that impact the possibility of formative reading. Informed by James K. A. Smith's work on "the spiritual power of habit," Deep Reading provides resources for engaging in formative and culturally subversive reading practices that teach readers how to resist vices, love virtue, and desire the good.

Rather than emphasizing the spiritual benefits of reading specific texts such as Dante's Divine Comedy or Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the authors focus on the practice of reading itself. They examine practices many teachers, students, and avid readers employ--such as reading lists, reading logs, and discussion--and demonstrate how such practices can be more ef...

Resurrection and Renewal

Jesus and the Transformation of Creation

Summary

This book shows that the resurrection is the turning point of history and the decisive clue to what is going on in the world, and investigates what it means to participate in the resurrection life made possible through encounter with the risen Lord.

The resurrection of Jesus from the dead lies at the heart of the Christian faith. It is the turning point of history, with far-reaching implications for our understanding of what God is doing in the world.

Resurrection and Renewal is a fresh contribution by an award-winning scholar to the study of Jesus's resurrection. The book is not an apologetic; rather, it takes the resurrection as a given reality and examines what the Bible says about it. Murray Rae surveys the Gospel accounts, looks at the resurrection as the fulfillment of God's Old Testament promises to Israel, and examines how the resurrection reshaped the life of the apostle Paul and informed his theology. He explores how resurrection influences our understanding of Christ, salvation, the future, mission, the church, and the unfolding purpose of history. Attention is given to its implications for Christian living and ethics, the nature of Christian community, and the promises of Christian hope. This is invigorating reading for...

What Does Depression Mean for My Faith?

Summary

Biblical Hope for Those Who Suffer from Clinical Depression

Studies show that everyone will encounter someone who struggles with clinical depression at some point in their lifetime. Depression's debilitating, pervasive joylessness is crippling. It can affect your body and brain, numb your emotions, and put strain on your relationships. For Christians, it can even inhibit them from delighting in the greatest gift ever known—the good news of the gospel.

What should Christians think about clinical depression? How can church leaders respond lovingly to those who face this dark, unsettling, and sometimes baffling dilemma? In What Does Depression Mean for My Faith? author and physician Kathryn Butler addresses common misconceptions about mental illness in the church. She offers grace, relief, and practical help to Christians who feel shame, and she equips church leaders with the tools they need to extend Christ’s love to the vulnerable.

The Justice and Goodness of God

A Biblical Case for the Final Judgment

Summary

Understanding God’s Righteousness through His Final Judgment of Sin

The reality of God’s ultimate punishment is central to the gospel. Only by facing sin’s devastation can believers fully grasp the beauty of their salvation and help unbelievers confront their need for forgiveness. Unfortunately, many Christians and Bible scholars neglect God’s final judgment.

In his book The Justice and Goodness of God, theologian Thomas Schreiner offers a comprehensive, biblical analysis of eternal destruction. Explaining that “final judgment doesn’t contradict God’s goodness but verifies and displays it,” he examines themes of sin, death, and redemption in the New Testament and other passages of Scripture. With helpful personal and theological application, this brief guide helps readers see how God’s judgment is anchored in his holiness, justice, and righteousness. Readers will see that God’s judgment isn’t bad news but good news. Life doesn’t make sense without it, and salvation shines brighter agains...

Who Did You See Today?

The Power of Outrageous Kindness

Summary

Kindness feels like a precious commodity. But in a world marked by skepticism, loneliness, and anxiety, Christ equips his followers to live beyond differences and distractions to see the people God places in our lives. Pastor Dustin offers a biblical basis for seeing people in a way that builds a tr...

In January 2019, a U.S. Census Bureau survey reported that 11 percent of respondents indicated symptoms of anxiety or depression. Just twenty-two months later in December 2020, the percentage nearly quadrupled to more than 42 percent. As believers, we are the ones called to truly “see” the lonely and hurting among us. What if instead of getting caught up in our own busy calendars and daily stressors, we dialed into the needs of those around us, listening with bold intentionality and responding to them with extravagant thoughtfulness and outrageous kindness? Jesus offered us the ultimate example of how to serve and minister to others by meeting people right where they were. Through us, neighbors, coworkers, classmates, and family members should experience that same grace, kindness, and loving attention.

Author Dustin Schadt offers a biblical and theological basis for seeing people, outlines practical ways that individuals, families, schools, nonprofits, small groups, churches, and other ...

Revival

When God Comes to Church

Steve Gaines

Summary

“Will you not revive us again so that your people may rejoice in you?” (Psalm 85:6)

Following the revival at Asbury University, Christians are asking what is a revival, how do we know it, and—perhaps most intriguing—how might Christians prepare the way for such a movement of God? In Revival: When Go...

Why don’t our churches today look like the church in the book of Acts? Could they? When God manifests his presence to a fellowship of believers in Christ, God’s people experience revival. That’s one way to define what revival is—when God comes to church. In Revival: When God Comes to Church, Pastor Steve Gaines analyzes how churches can look like the church of the first century. Infused with the Holy Spirit, they evangelized most of the civilized world within only three centuries. We don’t need another program, personalities, or marketing; we need his presence. The Holy Spirit is our primary draw, and when he touches people, they’re never the same.

Geoffrey Chang

Summary

Compiled by Spurgeon scholar Geoffrey Chang, Christ Our All is a collection of 186 never-before-published poems penned by Charles Spurgeon, as well as 43 poems and hymns published during his lifetime.

Steadfast upon the Rock I stand, Upheld by God’s almighty hand. In him I move, I live, or die, In him I’ll dwell beyond the sky.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a beloved and celebrated preacher and pastor of the 19th century. But unbeknownst to many, in the quiet habitation of his private life, his prayers poured forth in poetry.

The collection includes 186 never-before-published poems penned by the “Prince of Preachers” and 43 poems and hymns published during his lifetime. Written as private prayers or devotional exercises, these poems express Spurgeon’s sorrows, hopes, and love for God with striking imagery and bold conviction.

B&H Kids

Summary

God’s faithfulness never ends! But what does it really mean that God is faithful? In this 52-week devotional, children’s ministry leaders from all over the country share stories and Scripture that reinforce God is always good, He never changes, and He can be trusted in every situation.

God’s faithfulness never ends! God was faithful to Adam and Eve when He promised someone would come to save His people, He was faithful to the early church when they were persecuted, and He has been faithful ever since. In this 52-week devotional, general editor, Adam Cox defines God’s faithfulness as being always good, never changing, and trustworthy in every situation.

With more than twenty different kids and family leaders from churches across the country, this multi-contributor devotional includes stories of God’s faithfulness from Scripture, stories of His faithfulness from the writers’ childhood, prayer prompts, and reflection questions each week. Kids will learn that the same God who was faithful to the characters they know from the Bible is the God who is faithful to them today.

Come Home - Bible Study Book with Video Access

Tracing God’s Promise of Home Through Scripture

Caroline Saunders

Summary

In this 7-session study, Caroline Saunders follows the theme of home through the Bible. From humanity’s first home to our eternal one, we’ll see God drawing near to abide with us.

We long for home.

Home should be a place of love and laughter. Shared meals. Special moments. A place of comfort, rest, and safety. Yet the homes we make always seem to fall short of satisfying our longing. They’re imperfect, transitory, and prone to fracture. People leave them. Intruders enter them. Crises shake them. Too often, instead of peace and security, home is a place of brokenness and pain. These failings of our earthly homes expose in us a longing for a better one. The good news is that there is a remedy for our homesickness.

In this 7-session study, Caroline Saunders follows the theme of home through the Bible. From humanity’s first home to our eternal one, we’ll see God drawing near to abide with us. We’ll find that even the best aspects of home here are just a glimmer of what God is building for us through Christ. This study will affirm that our longing for home is good and purposeful, pointing us to our truest home which is found in Him.

Jonah - Storyteller - Bible Study Book

Relentless Pursuit

Lifeway Adults

Summary

See that Jonah shows us a seeking God whose relentless pursuit of us is at the heart of who He is.

Jonah is an epic tale involving a man on a mission, three days and nights in the belly of a great fish, and a city experiencing unexpected renewal.

It is short and sweet. But the man on a mission we meet in chapter 1—who is saved from a fish in chapter 2 and boldly calls a violent city to turn from its ways and follow the living God—ends the story pouting under a tree.

It’s an odd conclusion. But as we zoom in on the story, we see that Jonah shows us a seeking God whose relentless pursuit of us is at the heart of who He is. God isn’t just for “those people out there.” He’s for all of us.

Emaciated in body but resilient in spirit, Lieutenant Cade Palmer is crowded onto the Sultana with other paroled Andersonville and Cahaba POWs for the journey north. But a fiery explosion on April 27, 1865, rends the steamer and empties two thousand men into the frigid Mississippi River.

101 Devotions on Powerful Prayer for Men

Summary

You know that prayer is important. . . this book provides the biblical insights you need, plus the encouragement to really, truly pray

God wants to hear from His children. At any time, in any circumstance, you have the privilege of talking with the almighty Creator of the universe. Torn

Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate

Justin Lee

Summary

An evangelical Christian examines the impact of sexuality, the LGBTQ+ movement, and the future of the church in this thoughtful, deeply researched guide to navigating and mending the social and political division in our families and churches.

Nicknamed "God Boy" by his peers, Lee knew that he was called to a life in evangelical Christian ministry. But questions about his own sexuality forced him to rethink his “love the sinner, hate the sin” approach, sending him on a journey to better understand the Bible, the science, and the history of the church’s gay debate—eventually leading him to become one of the most respected voices on the subject on both sides of the divide.

Filled with personal stories and careful research, Torn provides insightful, practical guidance for all committed Christians who wonder how to relate to gay friends or family members—or who struggle with their own sexuality.

Torn has been a trusted resource for over a decade, and this updated edition features new...

The Diva Principle

Divine Inspiration for Victorious Attitude

Michelle McKinney Hammond

Summary

Deep inside the heart of every woman is a diva just waiting to be released. It lies underneath all of the other things she has supposedly “learned” about herself—truth, fiction, deception, or just the superimposed bad feelings of others who’ve tried to smother the diva within.

Although the word diva now evokes the image of a vain or undisciplined person, author Michelle McKinney Hammond takes diva back to its original meaning. It comes from the word prima donna or “first lady” and was used to describe the principal female singer in an opera or concert organization, who was the best of the best.

The DIVA Principle: Divine Inspiration for Victorious Attitude shines a spotlight on fourteen women of the Bible who displayed diva-tude, including Deborah from the book of Judges, the Queen of Sheba, Wisdom, Ruth, Jacob's wives Rachel and Leah, Esther, Rahab, and more. In the process, Michelle encourages women to embrace their God-given qualities and assets with the understanding that they are fe...

Does the Bible Affirm Same-Sex Relationships?

Examining 10 Claims about Scripture and Sexuality

Rebecca McLaughlin

Summary

Examines the arguments used to claim that the Bible affirms same-sex relationships.

You may have heard the claim that the Bible, when read correctly, is not against believers entering monogamous, faithful same-sex relationships. The arguments sound quite compelling. "Jesus never talked about same-sex relationships.” “Paul was only condemning exploitative relationships, not consensual ones.” “We don’t keep the Old Testament food laws, so why would we keep the ones on same-sex sex?” “If God is love, he can’t be against relationships of love.” And more. Have Christians through the ages just been getting this one wrong?

In this concise book, Rebecca McLaughlin looks at ten of the most common arguments used to claim that the Bible affirms same-sex sexual relationships. She analyzes the arguments and associated Bible passages one by one to uncover what the Bible really says.

For Rebecca, as someone with a lifelong history of same-sex attraction, this is not just an academic question. But rather than concluding that the Bible does affirm same-sex marriage, she points readers t...

Beautiful Freedom

How the Bible Shapes Your View of Appearance, Food, and Fitness

Stacy Reaoch

Summary

Explore God’s priorities for the way you live, eat and exercise.

Every day we are exposed to messages about health, food, exercise and looking good. It's hard not to get swept along with it all; in fact, it’s easy to end up caring too much about these things and even to feel trapped trying to live up to the ideals that we see in the media.

Author Stacy Reaoch points you to the Bible to find freedom! The Bible tells us that our physical selves do matter. But it also invites us to think about our bodies in a God-centered way—helping us to reset and find a balanced approach that is grounded in our faith.

Beautiful Freedom is an invitation to love the body God gave you and to explore his priorities for the ways in which you live, eat and exercise.

This book will help you find freedom from damaging narratives about weight, fitness, appearance and ageing. Even better, it will turn your gaze towards Jesus and help you love him more and more.

Reflection questions at the end of each chapter are useful both for personal reflection and group study.

The Unhurried Pastor

Redefining Productivity for a More Sustainable Ministry

Brian Croft, Ronnie Martin

Summary

Helps pastors adopt an approach to ministry that is effective, enjoyable and sustainable.

Being a pastor is not a regular 9-to-5 job. There is an unending list of important things to do as you seek to serve others sacrificially. The demands of ministry make it difficult to find a healthy rhythm of life and work, and can leave you running on empty. How can we develop a sustainable pattern of ministry that both honors the Lord and the people we care for and that will also protect us from burnout?

Ronnie Martin and Brian Croft have each spent decades pastoring churches and supporting ministry leaders. Here they encourage fellow shepherds to embrace a more present-focused, unhurried approach to ministry. They show how this starts with accepting their humanity, pursuing humility and remembering the hope they have in Christ. They also exhort pastors to fuel their ministry with self-awareness, prayer and contemplation of Jesus.

After giving a framework for this approach to ministry, the authors offer lots of practical advice regarding prioritisation, managing schedules and cultivat...

How the gospel of Jesus empowers us to redeem the deep ache of loneliness.

For years, Steve DeWitt was the only never married megachurch pastor in the United States. This put him in proximity to thousands of people, yet he lived his daily life alone. Over some 8,000 days as an adult single, and now eleven years of marriage, Pastor Steve has a unique perspective on solitude and aloneness. Loneliness addresses this pervasive ache from his personal experience and pastoral viewpoint.

In a time when loneliness is at an all-time high, this book—rich with biblical truth and practical help—speaks to all hearts. DeWitt explores the invitation of Jesus when our hearts feel alone and isolated. Writing on topics that affect us and the ones we love—such as loneliness and the gospel, loneliness and singleness, loneliness and marriage, and loneliness and leadership—he shows us the way out of our pain and into relational flourishing with God and others.

Is there a sweetness or a blessing offered in the v...

When God Became White

When Western Christians think about God, the default image that comes to mind is usually white and male. How did that happen?

Christianity is rooted in the ancient Near East among people of darker skin. But over time, European Christians cast Jesus in their own image, with art that imagined a fair-skinned Savior in the style of imperial rulers. Grace Ji-Sun Kim explores the historical origins and theological implications of how Jesus became white and God became a white male. The myth of the white male God has had a devastating effect as it enabled Christianity to have a profoundly colonialist posture across the globe. Kim examines the roots of the distortion, its harmful impact on the world, and shows what it looks like to recover the biblical reality of a nonwhite, nongendered God. Rediscovering God as Spirit leads us to a more just faith and a better church and world.

Does prayer matter?

What we believe about prayer reflects what we believe about God. Maybe you believe God is all-powerful and wise, but not attentive to your little corner of the world?

Yolanda Solomon, Ekemini Uwan

With a discussion guide and multiple step-by-step praxis activities, this book will encourage, equip, an...

Many Christians don’t disciple others because they think it’s the church leaders' responsibility. But Jesus commanded all his disciples to go and make disciples. If we're honest, many of us hesitate to disciple others because we don't feel qualified, fear we'll do more harm than good, and think we don't have time for it. Yolanda Solomon provides a practical guide to help us become disciples who are empowered by Jesus to make disciples.

Through biblical exposition and personal narrative, Solomon describes the beauty of discipleship in a way that will (re)ignite your passion to disciple others. Discipleship as Holy Collaboration describes the traits of a disciple and examines how disciples are made as people encounter a love that empowers and compels them to continue Jesus' mission. She walks us through the life of Jesus, pointing out numerous examples of embodied discipleship that we can implement in our own context. Solomon describes Jesus' call to make disciples as an invitation to col...

Will my vocation change as I enter a new stage of life?

Smith explores how to pursue excellence in all kinds of work and how to continue growing throughout a lifetime. He also considers four examples of particular callings: business, the arts, education, and religious leadership.

This third edition includes a new chapter that explores how a church community can be a dynamic venue for discerning vocation. Church lea...

Isaiah 1–39

Old Testament Volume 10A

Jeff Fisher

Summary

This volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture guides readers through a wealth of early-modern commentary on the first 39 chapters of Isaiah. Preachers, scholars, and students will hear from familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a diversity of theological traditions, much of...

"And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?'

Then I said, 'Here I am! Send me.'"

In his interpretation of Isaiah's vision of God and subsequent sending, the Anabaptist reformer Menno Simons perceived a pattern for all prophets, apostles, ministers, and preachers who are called and then sent out to spread the good news: "They did not assume the honor to themselves, as do the preachers of this world; but like Aaron, they were called by God. . . . They were brought by the Spirit of God, with pious hearts, into his service; they had always esteemed themselves unfit to serve the people of God or to stand forth in such a high and responsible station. . . . No one can serve in this high and holy office, conformably to God's will, except those whom the Lord of the vineyard has made worthy and fit by the spirit of his grace."

In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, Reformation scholar Jeff Fisher guides readers through a wealth of earl...

Treasury of David Vol 1

Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892) was one of the most renowned preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, as well as a prolific writer of evangelical works that have impacted the Christian Church over the past two centuries. His Treasury of David is his classic work on the book of Psalms, which was originally published within the pages of his The Sword and The Trowel magazine over a 20-year period from 1865–1885, and then published in its entirety in a classic seven-volume set in 1885.

The Treasury of David is quite unique in its composition as Spurgeon spent countless hours in libraries searching through the annals of eminent Christian authors throughout Church history for the choice comments he included with each verse of every Psalm—such as, Jonathan Edwards, Augustine, Thomas Brooks, Martin Luther, John Bunyan, Athanasius, Josephus, John Calvin, Thomas Goodwin, Richard Baxter, William Jay, John Trapp, Richard Hooker, William Gurnall, and many more.

Upon completion of this work, Spurgeon comments, “The Book of Psalms instructs us in the use of wings as well as words. It sets us both mounting and singing. If I may only hope that these volumes will be as useful to other hearts in the reading as to mine in the writing, I shall be well rewarded by the prospect.” One of Spurgeon’s pastoral successors at the Metropolitan Tabernacle, Eric Hayden, once called this “Spurgeon’s Magnus Opus,” and his wife, Suzannah, remarked that if her husband had never written any other work, this would have been “a permanent literary memorial.”

The publishers at Bridge Logos have republished this superb set from the original 1885 first edition in an easy-to-read 10-volume set which is conveniently divided into volumes that reflect the biblical delineation of the Five Books of the Psalms— and includes a biography of C. H. Spurgeon, by Pure Gold Classics editor, Gene Fedele. “This extraordinary set of commentaries on the Psalms, from one of the Church’s last eminent ‘Puritans,’ has educated and inspired generations of Christians since its first release, nearly 150 years ago, and it is our hope and prayer that through this “Treasure” many more will be richly blessed and encouraged in their faith, now and for generations to come,” comments Fedele.

This Pure Gold Classics edition of The Treasury of David, by Charles H. Spurgeon (1834–1892), is an expanded 10-volume set, published by Bridge Logos, intentionally divided into the Five Books of the Psalms delineated in the Holy Bible (AKJV). The Treasury of David: Volume One (1865–1885) is an exposition of Psalms 1–17 and includes a condensed biography of the author, C.H. Spurgeon, by editor, Gene Fedele. The First volume, along with volumes Two and Three are the complete commentary of Book One (of Five) of the Psalms, comprised of Psalms 1–41. Each Psalm is expounded, verse by verse, by the “Prince of

Preachers” and includes precious biblical insights and applications on the Scripture texts hundreds of eminent Christians throughout history—such as Martin Luther, Thomas Brooks, Josephus, Richard Hooker, Athanasius, Thomas Adams, Augustine, John Calvin, Bernard [of Clairvaux], Thomas Goodwin, Chrysostom, William Jay, John Trapp, and many more.

As Spurgeon reflects, “Blessed have been the days spent in meditating, mourning, hoping, believing, and exulting with David! Can I hope to spend hours more joyous on this side of the golden gate?”

This classic set remains a priceless “Treasure” of divine spiritual nourishment for every child of God.

When a group of four quirky friends retire on a neverending round of cruises, their attire consists of more than floral shirts and gaudy skirts. Armed with walkie-talkies and battle plans, these relationship experts--who've dubbed themselves the "Shippers"--target hostess Lacey Anderson and director Jonathan King in their romantic schemes. But the young couple refuses to cooperate. They've been on the "love boat" together before, and it went down in flames.

Boss matchmaker Emily Windsor has orchestrated multiple romantic successes, and these two upstarts certainly won't get the best of her. The chemistry between Lacey and Jonathan is obvious, but the couple rebuffs every outlandish plot and "coincidental" meeting, forcing the matchmakers to chart a new course to true love--all while inadvertently thwarting drug smugglers threatening to ruin their floating home on the ocean.

1 & 2 Chronicles

A

Commentary for Biblical Preaching and Teaching

Summary

Enables pastors and teachers to deliver biblical, cohesive, and dynamic messages

The books of 1 and 2 Chronicles do more than provide an account of historical events involving God's people; they also point to the future using a picture of the past.

In this commentary, authors Joshua E. Williams and Calvin F. Pearson explore the interrelated themes of divine covenant, the worship of God's people, the kingdom as God envisions it, and the God-formed community found in this far-ranging and didactic narrative. God's holiness, faithfulness, and gracious character find concrete expression in the accounts of the Davidic monarchy over many generations. These often-failed national leaders prefigure a better coming Davidic king who will lead the way back to proper worship of God. 1 & 2 Chronicles calls readers to both action and hope.

More than a Sermon

The Purpose and Practice of Christian Preaching Douglas D. Webster

Summary

Preach with compassion and conviction

In More than a Sermon, Douglas D. Webster highlights the prophetic and pastoral challenge of preaching today. The task is both harder and easier than we imagine, as we are called to proclaim the biblical text in a way that convicts a hostile world while encouraging our congregations to rest in Christ's love. We need preaching that both swings the hammer that breaks hard hearts yet does not break the bruised reeds in our care.

Offering practical insights and examples, Webster explores what it means to preach the gospel in different seasons such as:

Advent and Lent

Memorial services and weddings

Times of crisis or social impact

More than a Sermon is a valuable resource for both new pastors and veteran preachers who want to proclaim the whole counsel of God with power and wisdom.

Conquerors Not Captives

Reframing Romans 7 for the Christian Life

Joseph R. Dodson, Mattie Mae Motl, Preston Sprinkle

Summary

Discover good news for the Christian life

Understand how Christ has defeated sin's power

Identify the "wretch" in Romans 7

Is the Christian battle against sin a long defeat?

Joseph R. Dodson and Mattie Mae Motl challenge the popular view that Romans 7:14-25 describes the typical Christian battle against sin. The "wretched man" of Romans 7 seems unable to do what God's law demands and, for many Christians, his inner conflict and turmoil seem all too relatable. But are we impotent before sin and powerless to do good? When we reexamine Romans 7 in light of Paul's writings elsewhere and his interpreters throughout church history, we encounter better news.

Conquerors, Not Captives is an accessible and thoughtful study that rebukes our gloomy expectations and invites us to take seriously the Bible's assurances that the Holy Spirit frees us from sin's power.
