Fiji is one of the favourite getaways of many tourists because of its beauty and plenty of activities to do across over 300 islands. Experience culture, water activities, adventure sightseeing and much more.
A
Fiji vacation gives travellers abundant photo opportunities. Paradise beckons, inviting visitors to feel welcome and stay. These South Pacific islands located less than 2,000 kilometers north of New Zealand feature lush landscapes, white beaches, family-friendly hotels, volcanic formations, colourful birds and clear waters. The history, character and creativity of the Fijians are as much a part of these islands as the thatched huts, tiered temples and boat travel. Fiji has a tropical Pacific climate. The wet season runs between November-April whereas the dry season is May - October. Southern hemisphere winter average temperatures range between 18-24c, whereas the summer averages 22-30c F. As it’s close to the equator, a stable tropical climate is standard all year round. Fiji is a Surfer’s Paradise, with 3,000 areas to surf, and world famous waves for great vacation surfing experiences, while also offering Eco-tourism, including baskets and pottery made of native materials. A vacation at Fiji will need a careful look at the type of accommodations that are desired, the price range, activities and dining rooms available. Accommodations for singles or young couples are usually appropriate for families. The older generation may prefer a different island location to find interesting activities as well as more appropriate accommodations. Backpackers and hikers are special at Fiji. Several Fiji Resorts are located on their own islands, perfect for a private island experience. Most of the

resorts here are located on Fiji’s two largest islands: Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Amenities at these resorts varies, but most include day spas, gyms, private pools and beach access, modern rooms and fine dining options. Some resorts are geared toward travellers seeking a very simple solitary holiday, without the distractions of modern life. Couples generally gravitate to somewhat quiet places where the accommodations and restaurants are as exquisite as the pocketbook will permit. For those who have vacationed at Fiji more than once, some especially enjoy Castaway Island and the Castaway Resort. Here couples stay right on the white sandy beaches for which Fiji is so famous. Tubakula is one of the most popular backpacking retreats at all of the Fiji Island locations. It is a relatively quiet locale, adorned with white sands and extremely colorful sunsets. Bungalows are equipped with kitchens and other residences share a communal kitchen. Rooms are available in cottages which share a kitchen and bath. The Beach House on the Coral Coast of Viti Levu is an ideal and very reasonable spot for backpackers in addition to other vacationers. A Fiji adventure quickly shifts from exotic to feeling like home. Meke, a traditional dance and feast of local specialities welcomes travellers. The authentic costumes the Fijians wear for dancing feature deep, bright colours and shining ornaments. Fijians tend to agree readily to being photographed, just ask permission before taking their pictures.
There are many opportunities to photograph Fijians in traditional clothing, including on boat tours and at kava ceremonies. Even in everyday clothing, the local people make radiant subjects for photos that capture the warm spirit of Fiji. The vibrant capital city, Suva, has an extensive botanical garden and the President’s residence. Some of the most noticeable and amazing aspects of snorkeling in the many isles of Fiji are the amazing reefs you will find there. Fiji is known as the Soft Coral Capital of the World, so you’ll be in no shortage of beautiful coral for your holiday snorkeling adventures. Some of the most famous reefs include the Rainbow Reef, the Great Astrolabe Reef, and the glowing Great White Wall. With over 400 species of coral waiting beneath the sea, it is no wonder that Fiji is such a popular snorkeling destination, especially for resort holidaymakers. And with the water so clear, there will be no shortage of things to see down below. If you’re more interested in the many forms of active life in the waters of Fiji, don’t worry, there are plenty of slippery, colorful creatures

to experience while snorkeling. You’ll find eels, butterfly fish, sea turtles, sharks, manta rays, starfish, and octopus, among other things. The possibilities are quite endless once you’re under the water. If you want to, you can hire a guide to give you a tour of the waters, but snorkeling alone is just as rewarding. Relaxing in the quiet of another world is a completely unforgettable experience. Although Fiji is a beautiful country at any part of the year, peak times to go snorkeling on a Fiji holiday are between June and November, which is known as the dry-cool season, as many forms of marine life are very active during this time, and tropical storms are at a low point. These are perfect conditions for the full benefits of snorkeling. Cruises and boat trips are among the best ways to explore. A tour of the Navua River takes in villages and waterfalls. From the water, photographers get an unobstructed view of spinner dolphins leaping and revolving above the crystal blue waters. There’s even the prospect of whale sightings. Approaching a Fiji island by water gives a magical feeling of discovery and puts the photographer in position for panoramic shots of volcanic features and tropical beaches. Flights and cruises are the most popular travel options to Fiji. A flight from Australia or New Zealand to Nadi takes only four hours. Fiji hotels offer pleasant accommodations with the flavour of this tropical getaway. Fiji one of the most vibrant and diverse island cultures on the planet.

The construction of the wall began on August 13, 1961 to stop the westward departure of the German people. In the east it was called “the anti-fascist protection wall” while in the west people named it “Wall of Shame”. 155 km of shame of over 3 m high, of which 43 km through the heart of Berlin. Although on June 15, 1961 East German leader Walter Ulbricht officially stated that there will not be a wall built, on August 13, the eastern part of Berlin is encircled by barricades and barbed wire. The wall is set up in various stages. In 1962 a barrier was added, 90 feet on the inside, being created a strictly controlled “restricted area”. Houses on this strip were demolished and people moved. The area, mined and full of trapping wire.
In 1965 concrete walls began to appear and, over the years, observation towers were added, while patrols and security were boosted. The “four generations wall, ameliorated in 1975 was the last version. It was assembled from slabs of 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. The wall was reinforced with motion sensors, fencing net and barbed wire, trenches against vehicles, and on the crest wall it was installed a polished pipe, which would have made even more difficult to climb. The eight passing points were created expressly for specific types of people that could pass through. The most important was Checkpoint Charlie, which was intended only to Allied personnel and non-German citizens. Military personnel, officials and Allied diplomats could enter East Berlin without passport control. Also, Soviet patrols could enter without restriction in the West Berlin. On November 9, 1989 the East German government choose to permit visits to West Germany, but the minister for propaganda was not properly informed therefore a lot of confusion was developed. Tens of thousands of
Berliners assailed the crossing points, claiming to move without restriction in the West. Overwhelmed by tens of thousands of people and in the absence of understandable instructions, border guards were improbably to open fire, leaving the crowds to go across. The wall has been kept some time after November 9. On June 13, 1990 East German army launched formal demolition, and on July 1 all border crossing points were officially dissolved. The two Germany halves were finally reassembled on October 3, 1990. Today, there are only three remaining portions of the wall: a section of 80 meters near Postdamer Plaz, a longer section near the river Spree and the third piece, turned into a monumentFree Web Content, north of Bernauer Strasse. So, before you plan to fly to Berlin, it is good idea to find out, which festival coincides with your visit. If you are traveling to Berlin in high season it is wise to book your hotel in Berlin in advance to avoid any hassles.

CHILI BOWL
Words & Photos By Jamie Brown

hat is the Chili Bowl you ask? Simply put it’s motor racing’s answer to football’s Super Bowl. And because it’s held in winter in the middle of North America’s off-season, it attracts a huge number of drivers and teams from all over, some big ones at that. Held annually two weeks after Christmas inside the Tulsa Expo Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Chili Bowl Midget Car Nationals began in 1987 and takes it’s name from the Chili Bowl food company who initially sponsored the event. Thousands of tons of clay are trucked in for this once a year event. It runs over five days and for good reason. Nearly 400 competitor entries need to be whittled down to just 24 cars for Saturday night’s 55 lap final. And for the winner, they recieve a miniture Golden Driller trophy modelled on the statue outside the arena. I know what you’re thinking. What makes cars going round and round in circles so special? It’s close, wheel to wheel action. It’s a game of inches. A little bit off and you are having a big crash. And these cars don’t just stop, spin and fall to bits. With their short and narrow wheelbase, they tumble. They take skill to drive quickly. I know, I drive one too! The fastest way around a dirt track is to go sideways. You need to be on the limit to be fast, and that makes it so exciting to watch and to be a part of. The event is stictly for Midget Cars, but that doesn’t stop outsiders joining in the fun. NASCAR drivers, Indycar drivers and drivers from other dirt track classes. Famous names such as Sammy Swindell, Tony Stewart, Kasey Kahne, AJ Foyt IV and current stars like Kyle Larson and Ricky Stenhouse Jr are only a few to have raced here. And because it is held indoors, the track maintains ideal racing conditions, creating even more stars like Rico Abreu, Christopher Bell and the late Bryan Clauson. There is a lot of overseas interest too. Because Midgets also compete in Australia and New Zealand, the best from these nations often turn up such as well-known New Zealand champ Michael Pickens. There has even been entries from further afield, with British Stockcar racer Tom Harris competing the last few years.
16
worldtravel | 2017 One
The near 400 cars are split up into four groups, each of which competes on one of the four preliminary qualifying nights. And with only the top three from each qualifying night making it directly into Saturday’s A Main final, there is absolutely no room for error. The balance of competitors from each night get filtered into what the locals call “the alphabet soup” on Saturday. The top four or six competitors from each B, C, D right down to the O Mains move up to the next lettered Main in an attempt to make it up to the A Main. All these races are last chance eliminators so make for epic viewing.
“Nearly 400 competitors need to be whittled down to just 24 cars for Saturday night’s 55 lap final.” The latest edition threw up some surprises with Tyler Courtney, Travis Berryhill, Christopher Bell and Justin Grant winning ecah of the four prelim qualifying nights. Big names such as Sammy Swindell, favourite Kyle Larson and two-time definding Chili Bowl champ Rico Abreu all among those who were unable to qualify and were buried deep in the alphabet. Racing on Saturday kicks off in the mid-morning, making this a full day of dirt track entertainment. The biggest mover through the alphabet was Thomas Meseraull who impressively came from the D Main to make it all the way in to the A Main. Justin Grant started on the pole position and led the early part of the 55 lap main event, before Christopher Bell passed him. Bell led the remainder of the race to win his first Golden Driller trophy. Regular Sprintcar driver Darryn Pittman came from the midfield to finish second and Justin Grant rounded off the podium. This place is petrolhead heaven. Or in this case Methanol-head heaven. To see it, hear it, feel it, is something else.

Coolest
WATERPARKS
By Jamie Brown
5. Blizzard Beach Blizzard Beach is a Disney water park in Orlando, Florida. It is a themed park based on a melting ski resort. It has a ski jump, ski Caumasee Lake lift, floating icebergs and because this is Disney, appearances by Frozen characters, such as the loveable snowman Olaf. All water areas are heated, with the exception of the melting snow in the ice cave of Cross Country Creek. It also has one of the biggest and fastest waterslides in the world; Mount Gushmore, probably the worst name given to any theme park ride in the history of ever. But is a cool slide that any daredevil would most definitely love.
4. Tropical Islands Tropical Islands is a resort housed in what looks like a soviet nuclear shelter located about 50 clicks out of Berlin in East Germany. It is the world’s largest indoor water park with themed areas inspired by Thailand, Samoa, Borneo and Bali. The water park has a slide that starts up by the roof and also features a rainforest with nearly 50,000 plants.

3. Yas Waterworld Yas Waterworld was featured in our 2013 revisited issue back in 2015. It is located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. This is the perfect place to keep cool in the Arabian Desert. It has a series of awesome water slides that empty out of the mouth of fanged snakes! It also has a lazy river that everyone will remember Top Gear’s Richard Hammond driving through in a 6-wheeled wagon. Because it’s in the super hot desert & because it’s so fun it’s very easy to spend entire days here.
2. Water Cube You may remember this amazing piece of architecture from the popularly watched but not attended 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games in China. It was re-opened in 2010 as a water park including water slides, lazy river, wave pool and spas. It is in-fact the largest water park in all of Asia. But for how long? Not long. Get in quick before the Water Cube undergoes renovation again to be the Curling arena for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Siam Park And our number one for this issue goes too... Siam Water Park on the Canary Island of Tenerife! It was briefly covered in our 2016 trip to the canary islands in issue 2016 One. This park was voted best water park in the world by our good friends at TripAdvisor. And it’s easy to see why. There’s something for everyone as the attractions are divided into three themes; relax, family and adrenaline. This is a must visit place if you’re on a trip to Spain and the Canary Islands!

The stormy weather had finally subsided; it was a beautiful sunny morning. The M/V Ushuaia was now 60 miles southeast of Greenwich Island at Astrolabe Island. Everyone piled into the zodiac boats to circumnavigate the island. Engulfed with so much sunshine and blue sky while at the same time being surrounded by pack ice, icebergs, and freezing cold air felt dreamlike. Many penguins, in the water and on the island, offered greetings as the boatman steered the tiny rubber boat in and out of very tight nooks and crannies making up the shoreline. Penguins are amazing as they can leap out of the water up 6 foot cliffs at the water’s edge to get to their rookeries. It was a very different experience seeing pack ice up close and personal in a zodiac than from the bridge of the ship. Unworldly ice sculptures floating in blue, green, and turquoise waters made up the scene. The sun shone brightly while the cold seeped into our bones from the frozen world. Just as the cold began to overwhelm us the boatman returned to the ship. After lunch the ship sailed south to get in position for a landing on the Antarctic mainland. The captain tried a route that went close to the mainland, but he had to turn back due to the unexpected thickness of the pack ice. It was a “Shackleton” summer which made the weather unusually cold. This meant turning northwest until the captain could find clear waters before turning south again. However, the new course put us back in the open sea and it was rough out there. Mostly everyone was ill. I watched icebergs of all shapes, sizes, and colors sail by my small porthole. When a berg would hit the side of the ship it made a loud scraping sound as it dragged along the hull. I got up at 11:30pm and went to the bridge to see were we where and found that we were on schedule for arrival at our planned southern destination. I went back to bed and slept well cradled by pack ice, frozen islands, and the Antarctic continent. We were woken from our slumbers by a message over the ship’s intercom system announcing that another tour ship was sinking and had put its passengers overboard in life rafts. Our ship had turned north on a rescue mission to pick up the survivors! I got dressed and headed upstairs to the lounge were the other passengers were abuzz with the news. None of us knew much more than the message over the intercom so our imaginations ran wild. We headed to breakfast where unsubstantiated stories ran rife. The chief guide explained the situation to us. It turns out the tour ship Explorer had struck an iceberg around 2:00am and was taking on water. The captain of the Explorer had decided to abandon ship and so the crew and passengers were all onboard life rafts floating about near the South Shetland Islands. After
22
worldtravel | 2017 One
the Explorer made her May Day call all of the other 15 tour ships in the area turned and headed to its last known position. Another ship arrived and rescued everyone while we were on our way. There was no loss of life. The captain turned back to his original heading and continued the trek south. This event brought home how remote and fragile we are in Antarctica. The weather turned bad again and made it impossible to stop at the first planned destination. The captain contined south. The sturdy ship made it to Gerlache Strait and then turned in towards the Antarctic continent. The weather did not clear up, it kept snowing all day. But, the wind did die down a little bit offering some relief from the massive seas.
“Antarctica is the perfect destination for people with a sense of adventure who appreciates the beauty of the diverse landscapes Mother Nature provides” Once at Cuverville Island everyone disembarked to explore the spectacular place and its many penguin rookeries. The normal landing site was the main beach. Thick and piled up pack ice forced a landing on another smaller beach. Heavy snow kept falling, which made the surroundings feel tranquil. Unbeknown to the boatmen pack ice was freezing in while everyone toured. Ice sheets blocked the way when it came time to return to the ship. The crew used an empty zodiac to chop an opening in it. We returned to the ship safe and glad to be onboard. What an unexpected and worrying adventure this was. With 98% of its surface covered in ice, Antarctica has few inhabitants and exploration has mostly been done by researchers, though a few adventurous travelers have cruised south to this icy wonderland. Take a once in a lifetime vacation to the beautiful Antarctica. Accessible to travelers via cruise ship, Antarctica is the perfect destination for people with a sense of adventure who appreciates the beauty of the diverse landscapes Mother Nature provides. Thorough planning for an Antarctica trip is important as weather can be harsh and affect the availability of activities. When arranging an Antarctica cruise, weather is a major factor, the winter months in Antarctica are harsh and trips should be concentrated in the summer months, November through March. In November and December the sun will glisten off the seemingly endless glaciers and snow melt will fill the crystalline lakes. December and January are the perfect months for penguin spotting; penguin chicks are hatched in these months. February provides continual sunshine; some days in February the sun will fill the sky for 20 hours. March is the perfect time for travelers interested in whale watching, as whales will emerge from the deep waters.
