TEXTURE Texture (pattern) plays a key role in drawing and the arts, yet we often think of it as a last-minute surface decoration. Yet, texture is much more than that. At its root, it’s about the repetition of a central theme occurring within a composition. Think of a squiggle, a square, a circle, or a fingerprint. If you took the thing that most defines each of these patterns uniquely and isolated it, that would be the basis of a texture. Observe nature. Often, a texture is not so much a surface as much as a repeat of a central shape. Look closely at what shapes underly the texture.
