Lincoln Park Zoo Identity System Phrase 1// Visual and verbal research Christina Kim December 2014
Lincoln Park Zoo was founded in 1868, making it
one of the oldest zoos in the country. It’s spread across 35 acres and home to 1,250 animals, including polar bears and penguins. Their Nature Boardwalk exhibit offers opportunities to spot rare migratory birds, like blackcrowned night herons, and take in unspoiled views of the Chicago skyline. You can see gorillas and chimpanzees up close at the $26 million Regenstein Center for African Apes, and pygmy hippos, dwarf crocodiles, and the zoo’s first red river hog at the 75,000-square-foot Regenstein African Journey. The zoo welcomes 3 million annual visitors. Admission is free of charge.
History
History: Timeline
1868
The Lincoln Park Commissioners receive a gift of pair of swans from New York’s Central Park Commissioners. The birds become popular attractions, “affording much pleasure to the visitors” and marking the beginning of Chicago’s free zoo.
1874
The Lincoln Park Commissioners purchase the first animal for Lincoln Park Zoo bear cub for $10.
1934
The zoo and Lincoln Park become part of the Chicago Park District.
1959
The Lincoln Park Zoological Society is formed by 300 community leaders and zoo lovers, committed to raising money to care for animals, purchase equipment and improve the zoo. The nation’s first year-round Children’s Zoo opens to the public.
1976
The Zoo Society launches “To Make a Great Zoo Greater,” a $17 million fundraising campaign. The Great Ape House is constructed and the gorillas, orangutans and chimpanzees move out of the Primate House and into their new home. The move becomes the subject of the Emmy Award-winning documentary film, “Otto: Zoo Gorilla.”
1996
Lincoln Park Zoo receives the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Conservation Award for its Scott Neotropic Fund. The Matthew Laflin Memorial Building, former home of the Chicago Academy of Sciences, is renovated to become the new Lincoln Park Zoo Administrative Center. The zoo’s web-sitewww.lpzoo.org-is launched.
2001
The Judy Keller Education Center is renovated with the addition of the AT&T Endangered Species Carousel to the roof. With a donation from the Women’s Board, the East Gate Entry Plaza is rebuilt with a decorative arch.
2009
The Lincoln Park Zoological Society celebrates its 50th anniversary.
About
MISSION
Lincoln Park Zoo is dedicated to connecting people with nature by providing a free, family-oriented wildlife experience in the heart of Chicago and by advancing the highest quality of animal care, education, science and conservation.
FUNDING
Lincoln Park Zoo is a privately managed institution that depends primarily on the support of its visitors, members and donors to remain open and free every day. More than two-thirds of the zoo’s operating budget is provided by revenue from its food service, retail shops, parking, and fund-raising activities. The remaining portion is provided by a fixed annual subsidy from the Chicago Park District.
Location
Lincoln Park Zoo is a world of wildlife in the shadow
of skyscrapers. Located within a verdant park just minutes north of Chicago, the zoo has been a natural, free oasis for generations of animal lovers, who visit the zoo to hear a lion’s roar echo off nearby apartment buildings, see gorillas climb trees as the Willis Tower looms in the distance, or forget where they are as they immerse themselves in tropical rainforests, dry-thorn forests or spacious savannas.
