N I C K L A U S has long been associated with greatness on the golf course. The 18 professional major championships, the electrifying finishes, the sheer will to win; Jack’s achievements are legendary. However, the name Nicklaus transcends Jack Nicklaus’ dominance as a player and extends far beyond the man. Today the name Nicklaus also stands for superior golf course design, the result of Jack’s more than four decades as a renowned golf course designer. What became a vocation for Jack Nicklaus began as an avocation. After playing numerous tournaments and exhibitions throughout the early 1960s on courses designed by the head golf professional or superintendent at those clubs, Jack developed an eye and an interest in what was good in golf course design. Then, in the mid 1960s, course architect Pete Dye invited Jack to The Golf Club in Jack’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio. Dye was designing the course, and asked Jack to look at what he was doing and offer his suggestions. A hobby and budding passion were born.

A few years later, Jack and Dye teamed to

Golf has quickly become the chief amenity for luxury communities worldwide, and Nicklaus Design has been lauded for years for its ability to masterfully weave golf course design with the residential component of a project. As more publications begin to recognize the skill and art behind tying golf to residential, Nicklaus has separated himself and his firm from the competition. In Travel & Leisure Golf’s 2007 ranking of the “Top 100 Golf Communities,” seven of the top 10 and 28 overall were anchored by Nicklaus courses. In Golfweek’s 2007 ranking of the “Top 100 Residential Courses,” presented in conjunction with The Wall Street Journal, 21 Nicklaus Design courses made the list, with another four among “Golf Courses of Distinction.” The firm’s exacting standards of quality associated with the construction and maintenance of golf courses have been recognized for ushering in a new era of golf course design and forever changing the face of golf course architecture. Jack Nicklaus and Nicklaus Design also have been credited for elevating and enhancing the relationship between golf and luxury home communities. Since independent research began in the early 1990s, communities that feature a Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course as an amenity have resulted in the highest real estate value, the highest average home price and the greatest velocity of home and lot sales. The survey also included the impact on membership fees, annual dues and greens fees. When all data was combined, a “net present value” was determined for each golf course designer, and Jack Nicklaus was the overall and overwhelming No. 1 choice. With the name Nicklaus behind a golf course, its value is enhanced tremendously. And that value will only grow with time.

Jack embraces the technology that further separates his firm from the competition, but his design creativity and artistry still truly begins with paper and pencil.

“Designing a golf course is my total expression. I always knew my golf game would only go on so long. But what I have learned can be put into a piece of ground and that will last beyond me.”

Course: Muirfield Village Golf Club (HOLE NO. 11) Location: Dublin, Ohio, U.S.A. Design: Jack Nicklaus with Desmond Muirhead Open for play: 1974 Bear Fact: Home of the prestigious Memorial Tournament since 1976, Muirfield Village has been consistently ranked in the Top 20 in the United States and Top 50 in the world since it opened. Voted the No. 1 course in golf-rich Ohio. Name was inspired by Jack’s first British Open victory in 1966 at Muirfield, Scotland.

JACK NICKLAUS II has followed in his father’s footsteps in more than just his name. Since designing his first golf course in 1991, Jack II has become a leading force in Nicklaus Design, serving as President of the firm and working as both a solo designer and as a collaborator with Jack. Naturally, many of Jack II’s design philosophies mirror his father’s. “I learned from my dad that a designer must use what Mother Nature makes available,” he says. “It’s also essential to understand the client’s objectives, map out a sound strategy for the course, and always factor in some excitement.” Over the years, Jack II has developed and refined his own design philosophy. Most notable is his belief in offering golfers exceptional variety, which he has applied to courses in Argentina, Italy, England, Japan, the Philippines, China and throughout the U.S. “Variety exposes the player to different natural

JACK NICKLAUS II

experiences on the golf course,” he adds. “The end result is a design that encourages players to learn more about the game and, most important, makes the experience enjoyable.”

In 2000, Jack II was named to Golfweek’s “40 Under 40,” a list of 40 individuals under the age of 40 from the golf industry that the magazine felt would “most likely shape the game — and the business of the game — for the next 10 or 20 or 30 years.” The individuals were chosen from all areas of golf: course design and development; playing equipment; science and technology; and associations involved with the game or its players. That same year, Jack II was accepted into the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects, of which his father is also a member. Jack II has received numerous accolades for his design work. Most recently, his design at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth, Mass., made its debut in 2006 on GOLF Magazine’s list of the “Top 100 You Can Play.” The course also was named the “Top Public Access Course in Massachusetts” for 2005. Jack II’s co-design at Aspen Glen in Carbondale, Colo., was among the “Best New Courses” for 1998 by Golf Digest. Arzaga Golf Club, a Jack II solo project, was named “Best New Course in Italy” for 1998. The Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz., was among Golfweek’s “Top-40 Daily-Fees in America.” Many Jack II designs or co-designs have hosted touring professional events or high-profile amateur championships. The Club at TwinEagles in Naples, Fla., was the host for the Champions Tour’s ACE Group Classic. Jack II’s Heritage Course at Ibis Golf and Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., was one of two Nicklaus Design courses used for the LPGA’s 1999 season-opening event, The Office Depot. Legacy Golf Links in Aberdeen, N.C., hosted the 2000 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links. Internationally, Hanbury Manor, London, has hosted the English Open. In 2003, Jack II was named General Chairman of the Memorial Tournament and Chairman of its host venue Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Jack Nicklaus founded the Memorial, one of the world’s most respected tournaments, in 1976, just two years after the opening of Muirfield Village, which the Golden Bear designed with the late Desmond Muirhead. Just as Jack II is carrying on the legacy his father created at the Memorial Tournament, so too is he perpetuating the excellence and the highest of quality standards in course design long associated with the Nicklaus name.

“My design ability is a direct reflection of what my father has taught me about problem-solving, highlighting a unique land feature and transforming something mundane into something truly spectacular.”

AS THE NAME IMPLIES, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course truly bears the signature of the world’s preeminent golf course designer. It has the thumbprint of arguably the greatest mind in golf history. It is the realization of one man’s vision, philosophy and passion for the

greatest game of all. As Jack Nicklaus often says, what ends up on the top of a piece of ground is a piece of him. But, as the Golden Bear also adds, what goes beneath that piece of ground is a collaboration of a talented team that includes designers who work both in the field and in the design studio. It is a team of designers trained in landscape architecture, agronomy and the most state-of-the-art technology the industry has to offer. Nicklaus Design takes pride in the team it has assembled worldwide in offices that

NICKLAUS DESIGN ASSOCIATES

span both coasts of the United States, as well as Asia, Europe, Mexico and South Africa. Perhaps one of Jack’s greatest sources of pride is the group of Design Associates who make up the backbone of the world’s leading course design firm. Nicklaus Design employs close to 20 Design Associates

worldwide, and their task is to ensure that Jack’s vision, philosophy and design directive are implemented at each project. They also serve in a lead role on each project branded as a “Nicklaus Design” golf course, taking the successful philosophy long ago instilled and nurtured by Jack Nicklaus and creating some of the country’s and the world’s finest layouts, all carrying the most revered brand in the business. Jack is proud of the designers he has taken under his wing and trained over the last 40 years. To date, at least 22 past and present designers who have supported the work of Nicklaus Design have gone on to earn membership into the prestigious American Society of Golf Course Architects. That number includes nine currently supporting Nicklaus Design services. And perhaps in a clear sign of loyalty, six Design Associates, as of 2008, have been with Nicklaus Design for at least 18 years. Nicklaus Design truly gives credence to the adage: You are often only as good as the people you surround yourself with.

NICKLAUS DESIGN STEP-BY-STEP AS THE LEADER in the golf course design industry, with well over 325 courses open for play in more than 30 countries worldwide, Nicklaus Design offers vast experience in creating excellence in course design that meets the varying needs of their clients. While the process varies greatly from project to project, a basic plan is followed. The first phase in every design project is the site analysis, during which time the Nicklaus Design team carefully determines what opportunities are available at a particular site. Once the team is familiar with the site, it is important for those involved to familiarize themselves with the needs and goals of the client and project. The critical phase of land planning begins once the Nicklaus Design team understands the client’s wishes. Working together with the project owner, the team selects a location for the golf course, and a routing of the holes is created. Once this routing is completed, the Nicklaus Design team moves on to the conceptual and strategic design of the golf course. During this time the course’s character, style and personality are developed, as Nicklaus Design incorporates and blends the surrounding natural environment into the eventual look and feel of the project, while creating a variety of different golf shots, angles, hole lengths and hazards. Before the actual construction of the golf course can begin, a grading plan must be produced to detail how the soil should be moved and how the elevations will be properly created during construction, allowing players to see all of the obstacles in front of them. The clearing plan documents how the team will preserve and work with existing vegetation, or, when required, what areas need to be partially cleared to make room for site work. Once complete, the clearing plan makes way for Nicklaus Design to bring in an agronomist that can consult on the climate, soils, water quality and other issues used in determining what varieties of grasses should be utilized during construction. The final element in the plan is to use the grading to produce grassing plans while working with an engineer to best create the needed drainage and irrigation on the golf course.

In addition to logos, Nicklaus Marketing and Communications has approved photography available for various client needs, including headshots of Jack Nicklaus or Jack Nicklaus II. As an added benefit to support the early efforts of a sales and marketing team, Nicklaus Marketing and Communications can provide photography of other Nicklaus Design courses that might represent the look, feel and level of quality of the client’s future golf course. Once a contract is signed, Nicklaus Marketing and Communications can provide clients with a superior and varied selection of Nicklaus Art and Memorabilia at preferred pricing for the decorative needs of a clubhouse, golf shop or sales center.

Nicklaus Design clients have the opportunity to advertise in NICKLAUS magazine, and, because of the existing relationship, are afforded a preferred rate.
