With the aim to develop a concept for a piece of furniture combining two functions, I remembered this old chair kept in the attic for years.
Made of two parts, this chair could be rotated and turned into a ladder if you wanted to reach something high.
The idea was to capture the strong typology of this traditional piece of furniture to transform it into a contemporary one, easier and quicker to use. The result is a chair that inherits the utility centered identity of a useful rural piece while developing its own character through the use of a more slender and sophisticated construction.
The work consisted in reaching two main objectives:
- simplifying and optimizing the geometry of the wooden chair-ladder to make it lighter and more elegant in both positions.
- designing a new kind of hinge (metal or 3d printed) that allows a quick rotation of the chair-ladder and is part of its geometry, meaning integrated into the wood.
