WALKING CITY building : As the reading machine of the city .

Traveling within the city The relation between individua

Accumulated the experiences of shuttling among allies, converted them into the public space for socializing. Playing with split-level and void design to create rich auditory interflow and the sense of visual intersection.

Traveling within the city The relation between individua

Documented the memories of wandering in the city, converted them into the relation between architecture and the dwellers. The floors are connected by the main ramp that divides the whole architecture into indoor and semi-outdoor spaces.

Traveling within the city The relation between individua

Semi-exterior area Recalled the feeling of walking along the street trees, converted it into the relation between people and the nature. The absolutely perpendicular floors and walls fragmented the semi-exterior area, provided residents a space to embrace the nature.

Starting from the concept of “Architecture as a space reader, b links between the new building and the existing clues from b context. Moreover, discovered and learnt about the site partially an hensively through intervention of the new building. We all accumulate memories of walking, living in the city on da noted down these memory fragments and transformed them into read the city once again but differently.

WORKSHOP

SITE This project was part of the tradition of Department of Architecture, TungHai University. During the summer break after the first year, students are asked to participate the workshop. Evaluating the learning outcome of the passed year through execution, in hoping that they will take the difficulties during construction when conceiving ideas during design process. The chosen site for this year is the courtyard of the department building, designing a pavilion as an extended public space for students.

STRUCTURE We used local building materials, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certificated Cryptomeria japonica and Phyllostachys makinoi, for the main body. The levers were made in Makinoi Bamboo. We pulled the non-shrink cement at the endpoints of the bamboos to connect the off-the-shelf hardware to form standardized joints that connected to the main structure. The overall architecture consisted of the repeating structure of modularized two spans. The roof were half covered half transparent that reduced the problem of direct sunlight.

S PAC E We have made the corner within the department building a semi-exterior space while keeping the existing flows and characteristics. Used the wooden deck to redefine the area and to encourage a more dynamic ways of using the space. It can be seen as an extension of the corridor, the space for group meeting or just a corner to relax.

DESIGN

Practice sentiments : I have learned how to actually ‘construct’ an architecture within only two months time. Differed from what you can see on scripts and models, all the unseen and unimagined problems came out gradually throughout the construction processes. Although the final outcome might not be as perfect as expected, what we have learned and achieved throughout the practice are more precious to us. Without sufficient tools nor experiences, we have overcome the obstacles and difficulties as a team and realized there are more than just design, scripts and models in the filed of architectures. Architecture exists to serve the needs of people. Therefore, more details and the restrictions of the reality need to be taken into concern when designing. I believe we will focus more on the practicality and possibility of the architecture besides trying to reach the ideal design after this practice.

Work

Preparation and correction : The first step was cutting and preparing the balks and beams for the main body including U Shape, V Shape and the W shape on the wall. It is easy to have deviation when operating the equipment so we had to layout again when assembling them. The method we used was printing the angles and sizes on tracing papers and assembling the cut off balks according to the printed graphs on tracing papers to adjust the deviations during operations.

Main body assembly :

assembly of the main structure is complex. We had to eat the whole process of ‘False assemble-locate-takedrill-assemble’. If we did not think carefully, we would e repeated the whole process for even more times.

INNER SPACE ANALYSIS

The Central district is the origin of the city. There are many famous century-old stores and urban blocks where used to be the most prosperous area during Japanese colonial period. The government started the “City Renovating” project in Meiji year 36 (1903), using Kyoto as an example to build the checkerboard street system. The streets were merely planned for pedestrians therefore were all relatively narrow. As time gone by, the Central district has evolved into its unique self. I aimed at investigating these phenomena through analyzing the street block systems.

There are eight main street block plans in Central district but we can simply generalize them in to complete type and fragmented type. The fragmented type seems highly relates to residents’ daily lives. Therefore, I have chosen it as the core of the analysis.

luded from the analysis above, the street front (blue lines) that links to the main remained complete but the lanes (orange lines) on the other side, are very mented. In another word, only the inner spaces of the street blocks are fragmenthave extracted the fragmented spaces from the street block maps and visited the o understand and document the real views and situations.

Analyzing the width of the lanes and allies, documenting the actual usages of the residents in hoping to provide them a more comfortable and appropriate alternative.

After observing the daily lives of the residents, we have noticed the significance of overspill space usage. For instance, lining pots and cleaning supplies on the allies; placing chairs and tables on vacant lands like in outdoor living room. All these phenomena explained the needs of the spaces.
