Statement In the embrace of a world that often hurries by, the serenity and pulse of still moments have been magnified in our daily lives. moments that might previously have gone unnoticed. As life’s tempo evolves, “Aftersun” seeks to celebrate these fleeting intervals, turning them into tangible memories. In “Aftersun”, I navigate the interplay of fleeting moments and the interwoven dance of sunlight and shadow. Here, sunlight becomes more than just a tool. It represents constancy, change, and the silent passage of time. Using cyanotype on fabric, sunlit moments of pause at everyday spots - from park to benches to bus stops - are captured. I’ve sought to etch these ephemeral interactions between me and environment, amidst the urban backdrop. The experience invites viewers into a world of contrast: the hurried city pulse against moments of serene stillness, the fleeting against the permanent. The project emphasizes the profound, albeit transient, interactions we share with our environment. Each sun-kissed fabric serves as a testament to these transient, yet deeply rooted, connections, immortalizing our simple, sunlit dialogues with nature.
The sun is... - Witness - Medium for interaction - Time
Sunlight is the most direct bridge for humans to connect with nature. When one steps into the sunlight, they initiate a simple conversation with the world. In my project, the sun acts as nature’s medium, etching moments of human presence and their communication with surroundings.
A cloth is... - Temporal territory - Canvas - Claim
Integral to this narrative is the choice of material: fabric. Inspired by the universal act of picnicking, where a cloth is spread marking one’s temporal territory, the fabric in this project symbolizes a transient claim, an ephemeral assertion of existence within an environment, to record all that happen under the sun.
Cyanotype Commonly known as ‘blueprint’, is a time-honored technique I’ve chosen to employ in my project. It captures the dance between sunlight and objects placed upon photosensitive materials. In “Aftersun”, it further becomes the celebration itself. Applied on fabric, it turns into a canvas
where the sun sketches, bridging the ephemeral interaction of body, light, and locale. Once the moment passes, what remains are indelible blueprints, testament to a time, urging us to recognize that every moment, like sunlight, is transient yet deeply impactful.
