Brief description The theme of this project is ‘BIRD’. My idea starts from the mind map’s word - SKY. Then I focus on the word of birds and feather. For this design project, the completed design is decorative wallpaper with the coordinating design of plain wallpaper and sofa for living room. Connecting with wallpaper artist research of Johanna Basford, a decorative wallpaper designer, and current market research of Fromental Company, a luxury hand-making decorative wallpaper company, I decided to create pattern with story style – showing four birds living in different natural area. According to market research, I invested decorative wallpaper colours in living rooms from Fromental whose wallpaper design usually has a same pattern with changeable colourway. Therefore, the main colour idea will depend on market research, catching three colour match, but the motif colour of bird will keep to original bird colours or have an appropriate change. Motif design is based on four different birds living in different environments which will have various plants. Each one motif is a story. The final design will have four single motifs, connecting with the composition form from Johanna Basford who would like to design wallpaper with a stipe pattern, completed the same scale of story motif. All of motif will draw by colour pencils to process colour reduction, using single group to get gradient colour. The background will be based on damask pattern with a two group colour, and the damask pattern will be filled into texture, using for coordinating design. About skills, I will use CAD nedgraphic connects with Photoshop and Illustrator to design my work, which can be compared together to obtain a better design. The final stage will illustrate my final design with three colourways of green, blue and yellow, which will have a same pattern.

MARKET RESEARCH This part will investigate companies’ work, Fromental Company decorative wallpaper. According to current wallpaper research, colour analysis via 2016 interior colour trend, I would decide my colour forecast and target market and customers.
4
current wallpaper research This type of market research is from the Fromental that is a luxury hand-making decorative wallpaper company whose inspiration of pattern is from Chinese culture about flora and birds. Every wallpaper is a single story with a colourful style. There are two samples about birds, which is the current wallpaper for decoration. I would choice birds to be my inspiration of pattern design, and it is also the decorative wallpaper for living room. And I would investigate the colourway from Fromental Company, as the background colour to be the vital colour like Fromental.

colour analysis Fig.7 is the interior colour trend 2016 from Pantone. Most of colour for interior 2016 is soft and grey colour. This colour palate is close to natural colour, standing for nature which connects with my theme – birds in different natural environments. Following the interior colour trend 2016, I do some colourway research from Fromental Company. There is the same pattern with three colour palates. The key group has two colours, finding in market research, with the same hue for background. For coordinating design, the plain will apply for the same colour with decorative wallpaper, but the sofa will use contrasting colour which I got the idea from interior research. This type of colour match is suitable for young people because it has enough active feeling. There are three samples (fig.8, fig.9, fig.10) of living room with green and pink, blue and orange, yellow and purple, which will use in my design work. Fig. 7: Colour trend

The green-winged macaw, also known as the red-and-green macaw, is the largest macaw in the Ara genus, widespread in the forests and woodlands of northern and central South America. Although they are living in arid area, they would like to eat some fruits that has a similar appearance with my photography.

interpretation Lilac-breasted roller bird The lilac-breasted roller is an African member of the roller family of birds, which is widely distributed in subSaharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula. They are usually found alone or in pairs, preferring living in woodland and savanna. Therefore, this group of bird motif will match with desert plants, and I manage a pair of lilac-breasted roller bird to complete this part. Fig. 25: Lilac-breasted roller bird

The painted bunting is a species of bird in the Cardinal family, Cardinalidae, which is native to North America. Painted bunting is usually found in thickets, woodland edges with riparian thickets, shrubbery and brushy areas. Until today, it is often found along roadsides and in suburban areas or in gardens with dense, shrubby vegetation. For this motif group, I match with tiny followers to stand for garden and suburban.

Sanderson Company is an English wallpaper guild, which would like to use simple and fresh colour to design wallpaper. The most of wallpaper is flora design in this company. Damask pattern is a popular style for wallpaper design, which is based on flora design. I choice this pattern to be my background because my main design is decorative wallpaper. Therefore, I would like to add one level to perfect my design, and another reason is that damask pattern is also the strip composition that can serve the motifs with a same style. It is a suitable background to help the circle m oti f to di s pl ay a better appearance.

composition Johanna Basford
Johanna Basford is a decorative wallpaper designer, based on the organic drawing about wildlife and nature with black and white, completing with many details of lines drawing. This wallpaper is combined with plants and animals with lines’ drawing. Her pattern style is my inspiration. I would like to taste animals with various plants to be one group, finding more details and a good way to practice drawing. This composition will have a same scale, but it is the same as damask, which can show a regular management and a comfortable vision. Fig. 35: Johanna Basford, wallpaper

Skill CAD nedgraphic - Colour Reduction and Cleaning Pro
Img. 28: Colour Reduction and Cleaning Pro
26
Skill
The software of Colour reduction snd Cleaning Pro can cut down some colours that you do not want to use for your final design. When the drawing has many colours, it can reduce some colours to process painting simply. I used single gradient colour reduction to catch colours. There is a sample with details of motif. This time, I used colour pencil to draw, which can finish details clearly, so colour reduction is a useful software to help me to manage colours.

Skill This software of Easy Colouring Pro is suitable for adjusting colours with a group by myself. There are some similar colours which it can group to change them together. Throughout this type, I can get more colourway until obtaining better one. There is a sample with two colourway with the same pattern.

Skill The software of Design and Repeat Pro is suitable for arranging pattern. It can manage design with many levels easily, which can avoid misplaced pattern when repeating. It can display a repeating vision with enough size. There is a same pattern with different visual sizes.

development design Step one: Feather
Img. 37: Feather design

This design is a basic work for final design, which has four birds with various plants to be motifs. However, it just has a simple line background with gradient colour, and every story just has single bird in every natural environment. There are two colourways.

conclusion In conclusion, I made a new challenge of pattern design which is from story design from Johanna Basford. The inspiration from Johanna Basford to decide the theme of this project is ‘BIRD’, then according to mind map’s word – SKY to catch more words to build my design. According to market research, I discovered that Fromental Company would like to design decorative wallpaper with bird pattern and plants, so I catch colourways from market research to invested decorative wallpaper for living rooms. Via this project, I know about a new way to design pattern. I used colour pencils to draw motifs which can improve my drawing techniques. And study more software which can help me to know about more digital ways to improve my design. For future evolution, I would study more sections to do pattern design with story style that is not have a mature drawing and management in this time. For composition, it needs clearer consideration.
