Brief description This design has two collection, focusing on interior products of bedding for English market, the inspiration from Missoni, and curtain for Chinese market, the idea from Major Home, decided the theme to geometry, which connects with the trend from the 2016/17 Heimtextil Theme Park - Enrich trend and Protect trend. Following the mind map of ‘Geometry’, I catch main colours from enrich trend and protect trend’s pictures and videos from the 2016/17 Heimtextil Theme Park. Enrich trend belongs to traditional style that connect with Missoni colours and patterns. On the other hand, protect trend, as called purity, combines with Major Home Curtain Company to obtain cold and soft colours. Pattern design is based on geometry. The work is divided into two collections - the geometric flora pattern with bright colours for bedding and the regular geometries with pastel or purity colours for curtain. Collection one is based on tiling pattern design for background and flower visual research for motif, and collection two is based on collage technique. For texture, it has two types – one from visual research of Chinese water and ink painting and one from oil painting. According to their general ways, I improve to different methods to obtain new texture, showing abstract pattern to decorate design. And I investigated many techniques via market, artist and visual research, like collage and water with ink drawing. The background is based on the research of tiling design and gradient colour drawing. This time, final products of bedding is for young people from 25 to 35, which is decided to luxury productions, and curtain faces to students from high school to college who preferred for cultural and traditional pattern design with a high-end quality. Therefore, this critical journal will be divided to four main elements to describe this design – market research to analyse colour from trend and company current products, development design from technique, texture, motif and background, collection divisions to introduce two collections clearly, and final design to display ten designs from repeat pattern, one to one detail pattern and illustration.

According to market research, this project is divided into two elements of market, English market for bedding and Chinese market for curtain. Then, following the 2016/17 Heimtextil Theme Park, I choice to explore the enrich trend and protect trend. English - Enrich trend Enrich trend focuses on opulent and highly decorative elements which blend cultural references with the past and future, displayed by ornamental ensembles and shimmering, classy materials which can catch eyes. The most of pattern mixes into orient iconic style, which reinterprets classicism with splendour to perfection. I do market research from Missoni Company whose design has Islamic traditional pattern and colourful design. Fig.5, Heimtextil

Chinese - Protect trend Protect trend whose theme is ‘good for us’, predicts a clean aesthetic design, which is about protecting our physical, but above all our psychological needs. This trend is mostly reflected on products’ materials, as a valuable and rare commodity, silence takes centre stage. The colour of this trend is called pure and pastel style, which connects to cold colours. I investigate market research from Major Home, a Chinese curtain company, focusing on the design for younger customers who would like purity and dreamlike style.

colour analysis Interior colour trend
There is interior colour trend for 2016 by pantone. According to figure.7, colour table, these colours can be found from the 2016/17 Heimtextil Theme Park, four different design trend - protect, nourish, energies and enrich. From the colour table, Pantone Color Institute gives nine palettes for interiors colour match how colour influences human thought processes, emotions and physical reactions. This becomes a basic colour forecast to investigate market application. Nine colour palettes include Natural Forms, Dichotomy, Ephemera, Lineage, Soft Focus, Bijoux, Merriment, Footloose and Mixed Bag. I will give a simple classification to combine Pantone colour and Heimtextil colour to analyse colours.

colour analysis Enrich trend This type is catched from navy, black, tan and regimental green, which co-mingle with touches of brighter colours.
This is nine palettes of natural forms, ephemera, lineage, bijoux, dichotomy, merriment, footloose, mixed bag and soft focus. If group nine colour palettes to four trends to connect with the 2016/17 Heimtextil Theme Park, there can be an around classification.
Energies trend
Protect trend
This is an exciting and unique colour palette with eclectic patterns and prints, such as pirate black, mandarin red, violet, and florid orange.
Nourish trend
This is a joyful shades, such as vibrant greens and yellows, and contrasted colour with pinks and oranges.
This type is pastel with shades colours, such as wan blue, pale peach and tender yellow.
In the French language, Bijoux called jewellery, it is drama and intensity colour across many jewel tones.
It reveals subtle and muted colours, also called smoky type.
This colour fills energe, supporting to throw off daily life to enjoy the freedom of outdoors. Fig.8, Nine colour palettes based on Colour Pantone
This colour type would like to get contrasting colours, attracting as silver metallic, sunny yellow and bright cobalt blue, but they will have a balance hues to keep a calmer versions.
This style of colour is from natural source, like warm rosy clay and sheepskin beige

Fig.25, Celtic knot
This idea is from the theme of geometry. According to mind map, I catch the word of cathedral pattern design, so I find the primary visual research of photography in Blue Mosque, which can be found different geometric design with regular lines, connecting with some secondary visual research is also from Turkey, describing Islamic culture and design, called Celtic knot design that is displayed a regular geometric motif design via rope. I choice some interesting rope painting, used for my motif design. Then I looked for another vision design of optical illusion from which I can study a drawing type with lines and geometric pattern. Img.4, Spirograph drawing
Img.5, Ceitic knot drawing
According to the three types of visual research, I used Spirograph that is a toy for kids’ drawing to draw regular line with a simple sequence for an average percentage. I used Spirograph to get a basic motif, and then via digital drawing obtained a clear shape which has some changes. About Celtic knot also drawing some picture to be the primary design, and then used computer to get a more detail drawing.
technique Collage This idea is from the second year’s practice, cutting block pattern to create a new pattern, which is a texture practical design. In this time, I combined some visual research of collage pattern. Figure.30 is from Missoni, which is one technique type in Missoni design. It can be as motif design on the foreground for my design work. Figure.31 and Figure.32 are from a pattern book about Turkish textile design, which are combined with many tiny regular geometries that have a same scale with different texture decorations. Through a reasonable arrangement, this pattern design can show a gradient colour layout that can be designed for background for my own design. There is a contrasting colour arrangement with close sections, but it will have a gradient vision from the whole design.

This type of mark making is from traditional Chinese painting which used Chinese brush and unique technique to create the imagination. The ancients created many brush techniques to affect current design or art. Chinese painting emphasized how to use ink and brush, a stylised expressions, including line drawing, shade and texture. These brush strokes help the painting more rhythm and beauty, revealing painters’ individuality and style. These figures display some textures’ details. All of them just uses Chinese ink on Chinese paper that is easy to obtain shade and texture by ink with water. Fig.39, Chinese ink texture

There are three types of paper, image.19 and image.22 for Chinese paper, image.20 for tissue paper, and image.21 and image.23 for sketchbook paper. Chinese paper is easy to get shadow pattern, different with another two paper types. Therefore, I try to fall water on tracing paper and sketchbook paper, which can get a watery surface, then falling or dropping ink on paper where it display different texture. The point texture used another way to get texture. I used stick to tap another brush with ink. When ink drops onto the paper, ink would move with water trail. And the motif is from visual research of plant leaf, figure.111, which has an obvious block texture, helping me to inspirit my collage motif. The main colour is blue purple with green motif, which linked red colour to decorate the background.

conclusion In conclusion, this design project according to two market research gets two different types of design, but the same theme of geometry. Collection one focuses on interior products of bedding for English market with enrich trend, the inspiration from Missoni, and collection two is attention to curtain for Chinese market with protect trend, the idea from Major Home. This critical journal started from design trend, and then, according to market research, I decided main colour ideas, bright and traditional colours for bedding and cool and pure colours for curtain. Next, it introduced development design from technique, motif, background and texture via visual research, artist research and company products’ pattern design. Finally, it displayed collection divisions to describe each design generally, and illustrates three types of final designs – repeat pattern, one to one detail, and end use. From this time of project, I taste new interior products design with a clear trend, adding with some interesting technique to make motif, texture and background which can be improved in the future. However, in this project, it also has some ways to develop. The main problem is about the material application and textile printing. From pattern, I need to know about more textile printing which can help me to design pattern more clearly instead of non-print pattern design, such as some tiny changeable colours and small line drawing. On the other hand, getting more knowledges of material and market research can help me to get better design, so this is a work in the future design.
