UPCYCLING ARTIST COLONY
Upcycling Artist Colony intends to solve the issue about art in Ipoh, at the same time serves as a hub that gathers a variety of artists. It provides the resources as a media for the artists by collecting recycled or used materials from the surrounding district. As the public is the contributor of the resources for the artwork, appreciation of art among the citizen could be invoked.

Expanded metal mesh panels that wraps around the building allows mediation between the requirements of security, privacy, viewing, ventilation and natural lighting. Its semi-transparent materiality also integrates the indoor spaces with the external environment.

FAMILY APARTMENT
By having all families in the apartment, the concept of the apartment design is to bond everyone together as a big family, and everyone has an intimate relationship between each other under the same roof. Sharing is caring, neighbors share and care for each other. Public spaces such as cafĂŠ, toys library, books library and laundries are injected into the apartment in order to foster interaction, and at the same time reduce the storage spaces for each family.

Housing price in Melbourne is increasing gradually and there are many high-rise apartments booming up in both city and suburbs. However, young generation still ďŹ nds out difďŹ culties in buying a home when they start their independent living to raise their own families. According to the census, an average number of children in a family are 1.8, so the target demographic of this apartment is the couple family with a kid and with two kids.

Design Strategies The proposed site is located at Wellington Street, Flemington, which has schools, public services, and groceries within walking distance. As it’s situated at the junction of wellington and Finsbury-street, so the dominant view to the building would be from the junction where cars and pedestrians stop by at the roundabout. The permeability of the site is continued to the building and all the levels are connected. And the form is porous to the environment by having few pockets with greeneries to allow natural light and ventilation to penetrate in and through the building.

The front part of the ground floor is a public café lounge, which can be accessed from both streets. he café lounge is a leisure space which provides an opportunity to the residents to interact with the friends or families from the neighborhood. The main entrance where the lift lobby is, acts as a transition space between the public spaces and the apartment.

For the apartment units, unit for family with a kid has the living space as the playing area while a separate kid room for family with 2 kids. The corridors in between the units, which acts as the extensions of the living spaces where the residents can share the spaces and interact with each other.

Ledges along the corridor on the first floor are fitted with a slidable desk, apart from the toys storage and stools which are in different colors and sizes. Laundry is placed on the second floors, which acts a transition level between the toys and reading area. The ledges could be transformed into clothes folding tables where the mummies can chit-chat while folding the clothes together. While reading corridor is located at the topmost floor, as reading requires more daylight and lesser noise. The books are stored underneath the ledges, while parts of ledges can be lifted up as a work desk or serve as a table for a kid.

The exterior is ďŹ nished with a combination of white painted walls and timber, to give a homey and harmonious feel that possess within the apartment. By breaking the building into levels, we can see that the every level have different public spaces in order to promote the circulation between each level. Hence, this apartment not only encourages family bonding but also with the other families or kids, at the same time educates the kid about sharing and become more responsible in keeping the space uncluttered and organized.

The learning centre provides information and promotes learning activities to the general public from all ages for both beekeeping and urban farming. The urban beekeeping farm raises the awareness of the relationship between bees, human and nature.

Food waste from the honey production process such as royal jelly, pollen, beeswax and propolis, are extracted and collected for packaging, which would be then sold to the other commercial manufacturers. As a part of the learning centre, a workshop is located to educate and allow the involvement of the public in making the bee products like soap and candles.

No bees no food. Our food production relies on the interaction of blossom and bees. Honeybees play an important role in the ecosystem and the sustainability of the food supply chain. They are the key to the pollination of the agriculture crops which ultimately produces one third of the food that we eat, and so ensure the food security. However, in the recent years, the population of bees is declining as they are under the threat of diseases and pesticides.

As the house is located at the corner of the site, the perspective would be the main view of both the pedestrians or drivers towards the house when they are entering the neighborhood. The site of the house is located at lot one which is a corner lot that has has an advantage of facing towards the north. The trees at the roadside and the the setback area with the timber fencing are placed in order to deal with the trafďŹ c noise and maintain the privacy of the house. Roof Plan

The curtain could be pull off to have a larger sharing space when they have any activities or parties. The spiral staircase at the central space become the feature of the space which also connects the levels. There are also external staircase at the different side of the house that provide access directly to the upper oor especially when you are unlikely to see anyone that day.Â

The problem of having friends staying together is conflict happens because different people has different preferences and lifestyles. So the space is designed to provide choices to the users whether to get together with the others or spend their time alone at a personal nook at both indoor and outdoor. The spaces are also having curtains as a flexible boundary that create a subtle division from the shared space.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
The research for this thesis project is to study how architecture can explore or capture the situation and moment in the static built form and to promote or encourage the motion of suspense within the built environment.

The proposed project is located adjacent to the Palais Theatre and Luna Park project, sandwiched between urban blocks and parkland. Previously the site was a dance hall named Palais De Danse, which had been destroyed during a ďŹ re in year 1972. It was then transformed into an open air car park which does not add any quality of public realm. For this, a contemporary art museum is proposed with the intention to relink the missing connection, creating a strong relationship in between, also to strengthen the place identity as an entertainment district. The museum intends to enhance the continuation of the historical identity and the notion of suspense from Luna Park and Palais Theatre.

The main materials for the design are concrete, timber and glass, all use in the natural state, as inspired from the site during the site survey. At night, the glowing planes of obscure glass activate the exterior and video projections may appear on these obscure glass walls, animating the outdoor space with art, other than the screen projection at the rooftop cinema.

The foreshore became a vibrant seaside entertainment precinct and this function has become part of the area’s acknowledged character and heritage such as Palais Theatre, Luna Park, St. Kilda Pier, St. Kilda Sea Bath and Catani Garden. Hence, the location of the site increases its potential in enhancing the valued identity of the St. Kilda. As St. Kilda was known for its culture of bohemianism and a home for prominent artist, the site is suitable for an art gallery which not only displaying the modern art collection, but also promote a distinct and vibrant atmosphere to the triangle. The project is an open and flexible, reflecting the seaside character, history and recreational use of the site. The building is the icon that relates the past and the present of the site, along with the local characteristic and cultural identity of St. Kilda, apart from improving and solving the issues on the site. Building and city is the museum of time, hence the museum acts as a part of the history in terms of the urban context which continues the notion of film and suspense in a different relative time.
