Spivak Architects Summer 2017 Phase: DD, CD, DOB Filing SPEAR is the nation’s top physical therapy practice with multiple locations in New York City. The team is responsible for re-branding and designing the new 4,000-plus s.f. clinic located on 75th Street featuring two private treatment rooms for massage therapy, and a shower with changing rooms. THE NEW LIFE LUTHERAN CHURCH Dripping Springs, TX

Advanced Studio Fall 2013 Time: 16 weeks Partner: Jack Liu Instructor: Vincent Snyder

The New Life Church is a local Lutheran group in Dripping Springs. The specific site beside Highway 12 spans from east to west, open and broad. The old oak trees on site are considered the prominent outdoor chapel space. Therefore, the church building is experienced as embracing nature with the outdoor worship space being equally significant as the indoor space. The smooth transition from outdoor to indoor space happens at the same time as people are gradually led up to sanctuary with a view of the pure sky and oak trees beyond the horizon. By inserting a series of new trees to integrate landscape as a whole, the site is experienced as a process of discovery. The church turns out to be a simple modest shape with curving gestures inside. The nonlinear geometries on the interior indicate the hierarchy of roads on the exterior, which create a consistent landscape within the bigger picture of the site.

CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY Austin, TX

Advanced Studio Spring 2014 Time: 12 weeks Instructor: Kevin Alter

The Contemporary Austin was awarded a $9 million grant to help create an unparalleled arts destination at Laguna Gloria. Unlike the urbanized Austin area, the Laguna Gloria site comprises approximately 12 acres on the eastern bank of Lake Austin, which is an ecology refuge, holding numerous and diverse plant and animal communities. It is an incredible place to experience art and nature. The program is a contemporary gallery with an observation space for Lake Austin. The most significant feature in the design is the three conic shape structures. The concept is to channel the light down softly to the lower level gallery and meanwhile to create an open and welcome observation space at the higher level in order to have the wonderful view of Lake Austin.

20th Century Museum Berlin, Germany

Advanced Studio Spring 2015 Time: 12 weeks Instructor: Babara Hoidn

The proposed 20th Century Museum is located at the center of Kulturforum, which will play an important role bonding all buildings in this area and create a new urban community within Berlin’s larger urban context. The L­shape museum consists of two parts, a long elevated bar and a taller stepped building mass. It potentially connects the buildings on north-south axis. The elevated bar is trying to extend the simplicity and purity of Neue Nationalgalerie, while the stepped mass part is competing the organic shape of Berliner Philharmonie. Since the bar is raised to provide free access for pedestrians, the public plaza which the L­shape encircles, along with the front plaza of Gemäldegalerie and the plaza of Berlin State Library becomes a continuous belt of public area on east-west axis. The new 20th Century Museum will reunite all the isolated buildings in Kulturforum and reform the site into a more functional and correlative organism in urban scale.

MOTHER-IN-LAW APARTMENT Charlottesville, VA

Vertical Studio Spring 2013 Time: 8 weeks Instructor: Michael Benedikt

Located at Charlottesville, Virginia, the Ford Residence was designed by architect Edward Ford as his own house. The structural components of the building become major, visible features of its design. Within the uniform grid of the post-and-beam structure are a number of compositional centers defining views and circulation, and creating patterns of symmetry in plan and section. The proposal is to build an additional single apartment to Ford Residence for the mother-in-law. The methodology is to analyze the geometry of the existing house both in plan and section and to continue the strategy on addition. The cladding material of the addition is consistent with th existing wood. But formally, the addition approaches the opposite way with one single and smooth move since the existing building is very structurally exposed.

GEO-TABLE Wood Design Summer 2013 Time: 3 weeks Instructor: Mark Macek

Inspired by pure geometries, geo-table was built as a coffee table by hand and machine with American black walnut. Circle is a closed geometry with the most dots and triangle the least. The combination of the two makes a conflicting but simple geometric object of beauty. The triangle connects the three legs with screws covered by aluminum tubes, which creates a visual illusion of floating. Instead of joining wood by wood, this gesture grants the table a compact and light spirit.
