EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

6

/ PROBLEM

/ SOLUTION

After thorough observation, the NewLinx team realized that the New School students are lacking a sense of social and sharing community. The students are finding themselves in need of certain technical skills required for their assignments and projects. These skills are readily available and prevalent through other students at the new school. However, The New School does not provide a convenient platform for students to use or to connect with one another. Popular Media outlets such as Linkedin, GradConnect, Facebook, and Canvas are not central locations that enable easy screening of skills, and do not focus on New School students in particular.

NewLinx intends to create a reliable and user-friendly navigation system for The New School students, through both online and offline platforms. The online component will consist of a mobile application called CO-APP aggregating different student information such as their area of expertise, portfolio, links to Linkedin as well as personal websites. It enables users to find the skill they are in need of and request to trade it for another skill, or a social venture. Our offline component will consist of networking events, which intend to bring students to personally connect and socialize together, in an attempt to seek needed skills and to collaborate.

/ PROCESS

NewLinx plans on further developing COAPP to fulfill students’ requirements, and as well reach other universities in need of such a platform.

Intensive research and surveying of the New School students, led to develop a journey map of their experience and brainstorm initial concepts. This eventually led to develop a platform and allowed to prototype and co-create with its customers to be able to better enhance their service. The process was based on intense research to gain a deep understanding of the students’ actual needs and requirements.

ABOUT CONCEPT BY

CO-APP is an online mobile application founded by NewLinx, a team of three active New School students in the Strategic Design and Management master program. They bring forth a unique ability of design thinking and empathizing with their peers in order to foster the most tangible solutions. The main objective of CO-APP is to focus on the ample and diverse talents inherent within the students, which they came to develop at The New School. It provides them with the opportunity to carry these skills outside class premises, and employ them in collaborative projects between each other based on motivation and friendliness.

9

CORE VALUES At the heart of NewLinx are the following core values:

/ SENSIBLE & EMPATHETIC

/ PASSIONATE

/ COOPERATIVE

Our work is developed from the passion we have for what we do, and we strive to spread this passion and motivation amongst our community.

Co-creation is one of our main ideologies that we pursue within our team as well as with the people we design for/with.

/ INSPIRING

/ FLEXIBLE

/ OPTIMISTIC

We look at matters from new perceptions, and seek to communicate innovative ideas through our projects.

We understand the complexity of relationships between people and are always open to listen to each others’ insights. We also employ this philosophy with our co-creators and within our projects.

We raise the bar high and believe that “great things are done by a series of small things brought together” - Van Gogh.

Empathy is at the heart of our design, it drives every aspect of our human-centered process, and is communicated through our services.

19

CONCEPTUALIZATION

20

JOURNEY MAP After careful observation of how students work on their projects, and a large amount of research, the NewLinx team developed a journey map representative of their process. It includes 6 main steps starting from them going to school, studying around campus, to interacting with one another.

PERSONAS Based on the devised journey map, several interviews were conducted, focusing on the students’ pains and gains throughout the studying process. Four types of personas were concluded:

THE COMPETENT THE EXECUTIVE THE EXTROVERT THE SOCIAL SMARTY

21

BRAINSTORMING Different brainstorming sessions were run with potential target customers. These sessions focused on optimizing the users’ journey through three main questions:

1. How to facilitate user’s communication? 2. How to match different needs with specific skills? 3. How can we enhance user’s engagement with such a platform?

22

ANCHORS The brainstorming sessions led to many insights with a focus on specific features desired to be applied in the platform.

23

THE IDEA Through the different interviews and brainstorming sessions, NewLinx discovered that students are most comfortable using online platforms as they are convenient and widely accessible. It was also noted that students prefer communicating with each other through a platform independent from the New School networks, which they regard as solely work based. A mobile application resonated most with their needs, as they preferred a platform that can be available to them at all times, one that is simple and easy to use.

The New School CO-APPERATION Platform

The CO-APP application was then conceived. A mobile app that allows students to create personal profiles, search each other, and request to collaborate. One that is enhanced with specific features to make the process user-friendly and engaging. Brought to you by

In addition to the online platform, was a request for an offline component, which adds benefits of networking, socialization, and possible job opportunities.

24

PROTOTYPING & CO-CREATION With the aim to constantly design with users in mind, the CO-APP mobile platform, as well as the offline component, were prototyped and tested with potential users in order to get real constructive feedback. This process of co-creation led to a better understanding of what students find important, and the different ways they hope to reach their goals. A main finding from the rapid prototyping sessions led to realize the “Aha Moment!”.

AHA MOMENT! The most crucial moment we figured from the prototyping phase was students’ interest in not only sharing skills but also engaging in social activities. An inherent desire to connect on a social level and expand their social network within the New School, as well as engage in new activities.

25

IMPLEMENTATION

26

CO-APP MOBILE APPLICATION The online portion of the CO-APP application is meant to be a seamless, organized, and focused way for the students to meet their needs and to collaborate.

/ CREATE AN ACCOUNT Students can create personal accounts on CO-APP using their New School email addresses. The accounts will have personal information such as one’s name, photograph, professional background and current program of study. In addition to that will be links to the students’ Behance, Linkedin and personal websites in order to give as much professional information as possible. A section to upload one’s work will also be available and act as a quick portfolio reference. On top of that, students are asked to determine skills, activities or other interests they wish to gain in return for sharing their skills, and distinguish them according to the number of hours worked.

/ CONNECT After having found a potential student to learn a particular skill from, the user will be asked to match the posted skill he/she needs with a posted interest he/ she is willing to give back. This selection process will be accompanied with the choice of adding a message to further describe the skill needed. The history of sent and received messages may be accessed from the message page. A rating system will further enhance connections by recommending and rating one another.

/ EVENTS An event page will inform and notify students about the upcoming offline events organized, and give them specific details such as: main theme, date, time, place, price and how to register.

/ SEARCH FOR SKILLS A search page will allow students to look up each other by skills or names, or use a filtering search system that sorts students profiles by preference (most viewed, most rated, skills, most active), degree, area of study or college.

/ NETWORKING EVENTS Through different events organized by CO-APP, students will have the opportunity to come together from different schools of the New School and be able to socialize and network. These events will also focus on devising exercises were students will be asked to post their needs on a white board anonymously, and then are asked to pick up the post is that they thought they would be able to help with. This in turn will match two people together and allow them to further discuss details.

/ WORKSHOPS Workshops will be organized depending on a rising demand for a certain technical skill such as the learning of a program or technique. These workshops would range from Adobe Suite lessons, Photography, Illustration, Writing, Sewing and more.

STRATEGY

PARTNERSHIPS NewLinx intends to partner with The New School to be able to support with marketing the app, and provide venues for the offline events. This would allow CO-APP to gain better recognition and trustworthiness. It would also look into getting its seed investment from the New School as its services will better enhance the students’ experiences and learning outcomes. This investment will go into developing the mobile application.

REVENUE In order to maintain the mobile application, a membership fee of 45$ per year will be asked of each student in order ti fully use the application. This fee will also ensure that students use the app professionally. On the other hand, to carry the costs of the offline events, a fee of $5 will be required from members, and $10 for non-members.

FUTURE PROJECTIONS / PHASE 1 During the first year of launching COAPP, the expected user base is 300 users.

/ PHASE 2 By the third to fourth year, the expected user base of CO-APP is 1,500 users. At that time, CO-APP would proceed to developing more special features and larger workshops.

/ PHASE 3 By the fifth year, CO-APP would have acquired the necessary experience and knowledge to implement such an online application to other universities.

ANALOGOUS RESEARCH FACEBOOK Facebook is an online social networking service, it allows users to create a personal profile and add other users as friends where they can exchange messages, post status updates, photos, and receive notifications when others update their profiles. Facebook allows the user to join common-interest user groups, which may be organized by workplace, school, or college. Disadvantages: Although Facebook allows for various ways of communication and connection, it is not a reliable platform because not a lot of students use their Facebook on a regular basis. Many students also do not like the idea of having their Facebook to become a place for work/school related purposes. They would rather use the platform as a social activity to connect for leisure purposes. Most students do not post their portfolios on Facebook. This makes it hard to know if you are actually seeking the right person to help you with your needs. GRAD CONNECT Is a kind of Facebook for the graduate students at the New School. It allows the students to create a personal profile and add students from the same program as well as well as students from other majors. Students can exchange private and public messages with one another. Disadvantages: Not many graduates use Gradconnect. The layout of the website is quite confusing. Not many students know about Gradconnect. It is not focused on collaboration, it is only encouraged to be used at the enrollment phase. CRAIGSLIST Craigslist is an organized advertisements website with sections devoted to jobs, housing personals, for sale, items wanted, services, community, gigs, resumes, and discussion forums. Disadvantages: Craigslist can be quite overwhelming with the overload of posts from random users, it is unfocused and unreliable students may want to stick to finding someone to help them through the school because it is safer. CAMPUS The New School campus is a colorful and open place full of all kinds of creative students with specific skills. Despite the fact that the campus is a warm inviting place, it is not very easy to make connections and friends. The cafeteria is filled with students almost all the time, but not many students feel comfortable to start a conversation with someone they don’t know. This hinders them from finding potential connections. The library seems to be a better place to find someone who can help your specific need because you might be able to tell what they are studying and whether or not if they can help. It is not the most reliable way to connect as it is not a comfortable process for students to go through to randomly approach someone while they are studying. Classes: Classes are limited to people who are in the same discipline, although each student may have various skills, it is still limited because class interaction is not as active as it could be. -Students may want to visit other classes to meet and connect to other students from other disciplines but it is too hard since accessibility to class times and locations are not available to everyone. Professors: Connecting to other students through professors is not the most reliable way because professors may not know every students skills and strengths, especially if it is students from other majors and classes. Professors may not have the time to help you connect FRIENDS OF FRIENDS Finding connections and other students who have specific skills that you may be seeking is not reliable through word-of-mouth, or meeting your friends of friends. Although it may seem like you can trust your friends recommendation, you may find that the person being recommended is not reliable, and the quality of their work may not be what you are looking for. It is a difficult process because it is an unorganized, time consuming and unreliable way to find what you are looking for.
