CYBERJAYA IS ONE OF THE DRYEST AREA IN KUALA LUMPUR, IT HAS THE LOWEST PRECIPITATION IN KUALA LUMPUR. HENCE, BY ASSOCIATING WITH THE LANDSCAPING, THE DESIGN OF THE GYM AND DAYCARE WILL BE ABLE TO ADAPT TO THE CLIMATE OF THE AREA, BY GETTING SUFFICIENT SUNLIGHT AND VENTILATION VENTIL THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

Ar. Ngu Ngie Woon, a 34 years old architect who is currently working in Garis Architect Sdn. Bhd. During the interview, he mentioned that he would be inspired by the site context itself and visualizes what he would want the building to be like at the site. He always considers that Le Corbusier and Frank Llyod Wright to be Master Architects because they always emphasize and prioritized the spatial experience when the user is using it and how it is closely related to the site context itself.

The Symphony Hills project is Ar. Steven’s first project that he is fully involved from the design process to the construction process. Not only that, Symphony Hills won him a few rewards such as: 2013 Architect for PAM Architecture Steel Awards 2013 – Honorable Mention for Symphony Hills Office, Cyberjaya and 2012 Architect for PAM Awards 2012, for Excellence in Architecture Commendation, Commercial Category for Symphony Hills Office, Cyberjaya.

Symphony Hills is located in Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur. The concept of Symphony Hills is a symphony of luxury. A living concept designed to perfection. The architectural theory – Phenomenology has been applied in the design. Phenomenology is an approach that concentrates on the study of consciousness and the objects of direct experiences. By bring nature into the design, the greenery and the water feature has been made into the main focal of the whole design, uniting the residents in the neighborhood. Symphony Hills epitomizes luxurious urban living within a contemporary resort and recreational ambience. Stately homes of exquisite beauty are set along picturesque Cul De Sac, in lovely clusters with gardens and flow seamlessly into dramatic landscapes of lush greenery. A spectacular floating resort clubhouse at the heart of this sanctuary offers an array of recreational pursuits. Through Visual, Symphony Hills demonstrate human understanding of nature by replicating what is seen in nature. Ar. Steven implies nature into Symphony Hills to create the ultimate balance and harmony between nature and man-made buildings. Not only that, by implying nature into a part of the Symphony Hills design, it has increase the awareness among the residents that nature can brings balance and harmony in their everyday living, having a stroll in the open green park after a hard day work can take off the edge of the stress. Through complement, the houses and the clubhouse in the amidst of the luxurious greenery, these man-made buildings add what is perceived to be lacking in nature. Instead of disrupting the nature, human settle in the nature peacefully and harmoniously with it, enjoying what nature has to offer as well as adding a pinch of man-made luxury into it. Through symbolize, man-made building demonstrates human understanding of nature and self by translating that understanding onto built form. Symphony Hills clearly shows that the relationship between the interior and exterior of the building and how it is connected to the nature surrounding it. For example, the gym and daycare, it is located near to the open green park, when the residents are using the gym or picking up their kids from the daycare they can experience the location of the gym is appreciating the greenery by having a glass façade to allow visual connectivity for the user to appreciate nature while having activities inside the gym and daycare.

Cyberjaya is one of the hottest and driest areas in Kuala Lumpur; it has the lowest precipitation in Kuala Lumpur. Hence by associating with the landscaping, the design of the gym and daycare will be able to adapt to the climate of the area, by getting sufficient sunlight and ventilation throughout the building. Even though is hot; Cyberjaya also gets plenty of wind in the area that promotes natural ventilation.

The gym and daycare has a full volume of a glass façade, a double volume roof, as well as a metal perforated façade. These facades does not offers any shading device for the building itself, hence during daytime, the building is most likely to have more than enough natural lighting in the building. However, due to the orientation of the building, each side of the building would receive sunlight at a different time of day. Below the Gym and daycare there is a pond, which serves as a cooling device. Ar. Steven applies the thermal mass heat dissipation technique into his design due to the climate that Cyberjaya offers. During daytime, the pond absorbs the heat in the building so that the temperature of the building will cool down. During nighttime, the heat absorbed will be return to the space since there’s will be no one using the daycare and gym during the night.

However, the double volume roof does not offer much shade from the rain. Due to the high volume of the roof, the roof is only able to shade the upper floor but not the lower floor. Hence the lower floor would have more exposure of the rainfall.

The metal perforated façade offers natural ventilation through the building. The doors open up to the patio and balconies also offer natural ventilation for the building, while the courtyard in the building offers stack ventilation. Cool air comes from both sides of the building – the balcony and the metal perforated façade and exits though the courtyard where the buoyancy of the warm air to rise and exit through the double volume courtyard.

In the Socio-Cultural factor, the Symphony Hills has successfully invented a social culture into the community itself. Imagine life, within a community conceived with convenience, comfort and

security in mind. Homes furnished with an extensive suite of integrated utilities and the latest in lifestyle services for a concept of living that’s the first in its class. And all within a suburban haven that’s connected by a seamless fusion of cutting-edge technology from the leading names of the industry.

The spectacular floating clubhouse exudes an exclusive resort ambience as it sprawls horizontally along a waterway into breathtaking floating pavilions – each pavilion a unique recreational space – connected by a serpentine walkway. Luxuriate in the infinity pool, soothe your senses at landscaped ponds or sensory gardens or seek inspiration on a floating gazebo to the sounds of cascading water. For a change of pace, splash around with you kids at the wet playground or enjoy a workout in the gym while looking out to the lush greenery surrounding it.

The Gym and daycare centre acts as the focal point of the clubhouse area. It bring family together to enjoy quality time and forming new intellectual community in that large scale residency area. They form a connectivity network within one and another. The Serpentine walkway connects all floating

pavilions together, reaching from one parking lot to the other, allowing residents to have easy access from the car park as well as on foot from the main land residency area. The gym and daycare centre increases interaction between residents who are living in the community. Residents can enjoy quality time with their family while still maintaining a healthy life at the same time.

Figure 18.0 Connectivity

In conclusion, in my opinion, Symphony Hills has fully utilized what the site context has offer into accountability. Having man made building complementing the nature surrounding the site. The theory Phenomenology is very strongly implemented in the design, even the lush greenery is man-made, the architect has put in so much thought how both nature and building brought out the peace, harmony and balance within the design. Using the building materials like perforated metal and glass facade that allows visual connectivity between the interior and the exterior of the gym and daycare has created a balance and harmony within the building itself as well as the exterior. Not only that, by making the clubhouse area a centre, the gym and daycare centre is placed right beside the swimming pool, wading pool and the open green park, it became the focal point of the community, encouraging families to spend quality time and increases interaction between residents in the area. Therefore, the architect has successfully brings out his concept into his design.
