Module Objective
Module Learning Outcomes
This module is aimed at introducing students to the requirements, activities and operations involved in working in architectural / construction practices. The purpose is to facilitate the involvement of students in professional attachments to architectural practices in order to develop an understanding of the general nature, principles and procedure of law and legislation as applied to architectural drawings, especially the Building by-laws. Students will also be exposed to the process of authority submission for various drawings from an architectural practice and the range of contract documentation produced to support these drawings. Via a full-time internship attachment, students will further appreciate the documentation and report-writing skills required of an employee (architectural assistant / architect) in a typical architect’s firm
Upon successful completion of the module, students will be able to: 1. Recognize and recall authorities’ procedures and requirements with regards Planning Submission and/or Building Submission drawings. 2. Appreciate the requirements of a complete set of Planning and/or Building Submission drawings and the need for compliance with the relevant by-laws. 3. Appreciate a typical written specification in support of a set of working drawings 4. Produce a typical set of Client-Consultant Meeting (CCM) minutes 5. Work successfully in small teams for the success of medium-sized projects. 6. Appreciate the resource planning issues that take place in a typical architect’s practice. 7. Produce a complete logbook documenting experience in a typical architect’s practice.

4.1 Terrace & Semi Detached House Design The first task given to me was a design work. This is a project in Lunas, Kedah. The client for this project is Chaterway Corporation (M) Sdn. Bhd. My task was to design 2 types of 2-storey terrace and a 2-storey semidetached house. My concept for the design is green infused. As users, we are living in an urban city, the stress of living in the modern days is getting higher, we are either facing the computers all day long or long hour’s traffic jams, so when we get home we would like to relax, what makes us more relax and refreshing than the greenery nature? Infusing greenery in the foyer, terrace, balcony, and even inside the house would help us relax more at home. It took me two weeks to finalize my design before submitting it to my senior. During that period of time when I was designing, my supervisor – Ar. Tang Wei Tee checked up on me, from this project he taught me how to analyze a building with good natural ventilation and good natural lighting. Not only that, he taught me about the minimum natural ventilation percentage required by the council from UBBL. He also taught me to give consideration of the natural lighting to all spaces in the house. From this project, I have learned a lot from my supervisor and I am very grateful for it.

This project is a proposal of changing 2 blocks of 4 storeys apartments to hostel which is located at Lot 5235, Mukim 11, Lorong Belimbing, Seberang Perai Tengah, Penang, for the client name Messrs. NCY Solutions Sdn. Bhd. This task was given to me by my senior, I was required to draw the front elevation of the hostel by using the height given in the sections and also from the floor plan itself. The task is quite easy for me because I have always practiced it with all the assignments given to me in class.

4.3 Proposed change of use (from residential to clinic) This project was given to me for major alteration in the plans. This project is located in Lorong Abu Sittee, Penang. It was originally a heritage malay bungalow, but the building has decayed and left only the first floor slab, a little left of the pillars and walls. The client, Dr. Ong Hean Chye requested to change the heritage building into a clinic. The original extension has been added an extra floor under the request of the client. From this project I’ve learned about the specification need to be written in the plans for engineer’s use and more. Not only that, from here I’ve also learned about material change will also lead to different drawing in Autocad. Beam levels affecting the RC column along with the doors and windows. From this project, I have raised a lot of question about the work I’m working on, opens up my mind about the architecture world and also about construction. Understanding more that the drawings we drew will affect the work by civil and structure engineer, contractor and more.

4.4 Signage Design Signage Design means designing the plates on the doors indicating the directions in the car park, indicating what is in the room such as the bomba fire hose reel, fire escape door, rules and regulations for the swimming pool and more. The signage design is for the project G-Avenue Midas Ceria. This task is more like a graphic design. According to my senior colleague, signage design is also within our area of job.
