Linked University Course Information Project Aims and Objectives The aim of the project is to provide students with all the information necessary for making well-informed decisions on their choice of course. As well as providing our course data in XCRI_CAP format, we also aim to provide additional course data together with associated peripheral information such as location, labour market, employment data, placement or internship data etc. in a linked data format. Main Objectives • • • •
Exposing course information in XCRI-CAP format and linked data. Reengineer “the new course/course offering advertising” processes to allow more automation. Build a course information explorer web application To use EA to capture “what is happening” in the enterprise related to the enterprise missions and goals regarding course information.
System Architecture
Enterprise Architecture (AS-IS) AS-IS model identified some issues including non-automated duplicated manual entry of course data.
Linked Data
XCRI-CAP
UWL Linked Data Model has been designed to model linked course information.
Course Explorer provides search on course information “ The XCRI output created by LUCI project will become an integral part of the new University website. We will be using this data to drive our course search and surface course information throughout the site. We are also excited by the flexibility this solution offers, enabling us to repurpose and integrate course information with other data sources in the future. ” - Lucy Abrahams, Senior Web Developer Senior Marketing Web Developer
based on UWL course linked data linked with other university data and external open data such as location and job advertisement in RDF format. http://luci.uwl.ac.uk/app/ce http://luci.uwl.ac.uk/app/je
Conclusions XCRI-CAP was very welcomed by the university and being an integral part of new course website. Producing XCRI-CAP identified non-sector standard data issues as well as needs of extension for extra data such as keywords to associate course with job opportunity. Re-engineering course processes couldn’t be accomplished as the university has gone through lots of changes. Course linked data has shown potential development and integration with other data sources for smart university applications.
