Make a note of it now!... ...the RSC Annual Event 2010 takes place on 22nd June 2010. The venue this year is the Reebok Stadium, home to Bolton Wanderers Football Club.

The Reebok Stadium provides plenty of scope for a mix of exhibition stands, demonstrations, presentations and seminars, in the same vein as last year’s successful event.

The theme for this year is Technology Enhanced Assessment.

Supporting functional (key) skills...

Welcome to the February 2010 issue of the RSC Northwest newsletter... ...from Andrew Quarmby, RSC Northwest Manager Looking back on my previous introductions, I notice I have a habit of referring either to the weather or the season! So I won’t mention snow and ice... ...except to observe that those of you with ‘mature’ online systems and a culture of learner-access to them will not have experienced serious gaps in the learning experience.

You may also have smiled wrily (but not complacently, I hope) at calls for schools to open for additional hours once the snow had melted to ensure learning programmes were completed. A recent blog posting by James Clay (Gloucestershire College) highlights this issue http://elearningstuff.wordpress.com/2010/01/10/snow/ Many 24-hour days and 7-day weeks have passed since most learning providers developed the capacity to enable 24/7 access to learning. Are you working in a learning provider which now takes this model for granted? Is it built into the way you work, and what your learners expect?

Indeed, are you about to mark an assignment online, or engage with the group work of your learners which has been achieved via technology since you last saw them?

Or is your experience still that practice lags behind the capabilities offered by our technology?

LLUK Application Guides Lifelong Learning UK has recently published on the Excellence Gateway a number of guides aimed at Leaders and Managers, Teachers, Tutors and Trainers and Learning Support Practitioners.

Investment in appropriate technologies, in software to enable learning, and in network bandwidth and access has increased massively in recent years. Whilst the effective use of ILT is a matter of professional judgment based on a specific learning context, there are common threads and, increasingly, common expectations that technologies will be used appropriately within our professional roles.

The LLUK Guides give a good insight into the questions to ask ourselves to check out whether we are making the best use of what is available both from our organisational systems and resources and from freely available web resources.

They should also act as a good prompt for staff development managers who are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that those in key roles in learning providers develop the appropriate skills.

Not only are the LLUK guides an excellent interpretation of where the use of ILT is integral to the role – they also offer explanations of the part played by the various organisations who provide guidance in the FE and Skills sectors and give links to resources.

The guides are impartial and informative – we strongly recommend them to you, and suggest you build them into your thinking and action-planning – don’t just ‘put them back on the shelf’!

The Doctor is in! JISC Digital Media Online surgeries...

Working in Partnership - how JISC Services support the FE communities

Did you know that JISC Digital Media provide fortnightly one-hour online help and support sessions to answer any queries you have regarding digital media?

You can join the JISC Digital Media team online (via Elluminate) between 1.30pm and 2.30pm every other Wednesday.

Technical, workflowrelated or general queries regarding any aspect of still images, moving images (including video), audio and how they can be used for teaching and learning are welcome.

No query is too simple to be explored.

In November 2009 JISC published ‘Working in Partnership’, demonstrating how the FE communities have used the expertise and experience of JISC-funded services to overcome challenges, to gain skills and to enhance the quality and value of what they offer.

The JISC services featured in the publication offer:  Access to high-quality digital resources to support learning, teaching and research  Advice on the creation and preservation of digital resources  Guidance on the implications of ICT, including legal and organisational issues  Advice and training on technical and network matters

 

Opportunities to trial tools for resource creation and to share and repurpose resources Front-line support, through the JISC Regional Support Centres (JISC RSCs)

‘Working in Partnership’ shows the work of JISC Services through twenty concise case studies demonstrating how learning providers have used the services, resources, and expertise. The services highlighted through the case studies include JANET, DCC (Digital Curation Centre), JISC Legal, UK Access Management Federation, and OSS Watch.

The high regard that many in the FE communities have for the JISC services is evident, with testimonies from senior managers, practitioners, sector associates and learners included in the case studies.

These case studies are short and snappy. They have not been written with the intention of providing in-depth descriptions of developments and solutions within FE learning providers; but they do raise awareness of the JISC services on offer, how those services can be utilised, and the benefits they can provide.

There's a table towards the front of the publication which helps to narrow down (into eight categories) which of the twenty case studies might be relevant if you are looking for those which are relevant for ‘Course management and delivery’ or ‘Staff development and CPD’, for example.

In the introduction to ‘Working in Partnership’ there is an acknowledgement that the rapidly changing technological and educational environment means that the case study stories cannot be complete; however, it notes that “closely focused on the needs of users across the sector, JISC services continue to provide agile, high-quality guidance and support to the FE communities as they strive to meet the new challenges of the digital age”.

Simple, free screencasting options...

RSC Northwest eLearning Adviser John Dalziel has recently come across two free screencasting applications.

Both have great possibilities; for example, to record and produce instructional material, or for work-based learners to produce ePortfolio evidence. Why not give them a go?

Screencast-o-Matic not only enables you to make screencasts, it allows you to create a menu so that users can jump straight to a specific point in your screencast. http://screencast-omatic.com/ Screenr enables you to make ‘ready-to-tweet’ screencasts which publish straight to your Twitter account with a short URL that links direct to your screencast. http://screenr.com/ 5

uNET 2009 - when North West learning providers met the technology suppliers On 24 November 2009 RSC Northwest held a one-day event - uNET (Using New and Emerging Technologies) in Education 2009: Meet the Suppliers where commercial suppliers of technology were available to discuss, demonstrate and present their products and services to learning providers in the North West.

The event, held in the Princess Royal Stand at Aintree Racecourse, was attended by around 120 delegates who were able to meet with over 30 suppliers.

It provided access to a wide range of products and services for use in teaching and learning - many with particular relevance to recent funding initiatives including virtual worlds, digital signage, 3D interactive technology, e-portfolio tools, video hardware and software, wireless network solutions and much, much more.

Delegates were able to visit the exhibition stands throughout the day, and were also able to attend seminar sessions and presentations from a number of the suppliers.

Feedback from delegates included that there was an effective mix of ‘roaming’ exhibition space and seminars, and good opportunities for networking. Whilst some delegates would have liked to see specific brands or types of technology that were not represented at the event, others highlighted that the event offered a good range of knowledgeable and friendly exhibitors.

Feedback also showed that many delegates planned to follow up on contacts they made with suppliers, or had plans to buy a product or service based on the exhibition stands they had visited.

Positive feedback from suppliers included that it was “a fantastic event”, that they were “very impressed with the whole day”, and that it had “brilliant organisation”...pleasing and reassuring comments for us, knowing how difficult it is to provide every exhibitor with the ideal space to enable them to maximise opportunities with delegates!

We ran prize draws during the uNET event and in relation to the event evaluation, with some of these prizes kindly donated by First Connections, ClickView and Webducate.

There were lucky prize winners from Hugh Baird College, Knowsley Community College, Sefton Enterprises, Skelmersdale & Ormskirk Colleges, St Helens Chamber, System Training.

Our special thanks go to IDNS for providing the digital signage for the uNET Event.

JISC Advance Services: Focus on JISC Legal

JISC Legal, one of the eight JISC Advance services funded

by JISC, works to ensure that legal issues do not become a barrier to the adoption and use of new information and communications technologies in further education, higher education and specialist colleges.

JISC Legal aims to: 1. Disseminate information and raise awareness of the legal issues relating to the use of information technology particularly with reference to:  Data Protection  Intellectual Property Rights  Human Rights  Freedom of Information  Disability and The Law  E-Security (Monitoring and Encryption)  Cyber-crime and Criminal Liability  ISP (Internet Service Provider) Liability 2. Follow relevant court cases and legislative developments within the United Kingdom (and where relevant internationally) and examine the effect such developments may have on the sector.

3. Co-ordinate and liaise with FE and HE organisations, relevant regulatory bodies, projects and studies in areas related to the remit of the service.

The JISC Legal Service works to achieve these aims through a range of activities, including:  Generic research  Maintaining an up-to-date website  Operating an enquiry service by email, fax, telephone and post (with a target of answering within three working days)

 Operating and contributing to email discussion groups  Holding, sponsoring or presenting at a series of National and regional workshops across the UK  Commissioning briefing papers and other content both for the website and in print by lawyers, academics and practitioners  Working with other parts of JISC - in particular through the JISC Regional Support Centres (RSCs)

Legal Issues surrounding Web 2.0 Of particular interest to many learning providers will be the information and guidance provided by JISC Legal on the legal issues surrounding Web 2.0.

The JISC Legal website contains publications, webcasts and resources covering a range of Web 2.0 related topics, including Intellectual Property Rights (and in particular ownership rights), data protection, liability, and accessibility.

Upgraded JISC Legal website JISC Legal upgraded its website during 2009. A short ‘homemade’ video was produced to highlight some of the changes and features which make accessing its guidance more straightforward. JISC Legal case study...

If you want to see an example of how the services JISC Legal provides play out in reality, take a look at a case study on South East Essex College.

It provides an example of where a college wants “to ensure that policies and procedures are in line with current legislation, yet fair and encouraging to staff and students who increasingly rely on internet access both on and off site to facilitate flexible teaching, learning and assessment.”

The study highlights that the college was “particularly satisfied with the service provided by the JISC Legal helpdesk”.

West Cheshire College: Fit for purpose! Exploring the Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit for interactive teaching and learning An Excellence Gateway case study - the article here is a summary. The full case study can be accessed at www.excellencegateway.org.uk/page.aspx?o=267486 As part of a wider project to develop more interactive and effective teaching and learning, West Cheshire College has been exploring use of the Nintendo Wii and Wii Fit, loaned from JISC RSC Northwest. Learning Resources staff Tricia Haddock (Senior Learning Resources Officer) and Anthony Beal (Learning Resources Section Leader) invited tutors to incorporate use of the Wii into their courses, and have been impressed with tutor responses and student engagement.

Tutors wanting to use the Wii were asked to:  provide lesson plans so that they could see how the tutors intended to utilise the Wii in their lessons;  allow staff from Learning Resources to observe and video the technology in use, wherever feasible; and  evaluate use of the technology.

Learning Resources staff took the equipment out and supported tutors in setting it up for use. In most cases the set-up was simple, which instilled confidence in some tutors who were initially concerned about how complex they thought the process might be.

Pilots with the Wii and Wii Fit include Childcare, where it has proved particularly versatile in supporting a range of topics.

All the feedback has been positive, even from tutors who were sceptical, or had concerns about using it beforehand.

As a result of the pilots, the team has purchased a Wii for each of the three College sites.

Tutors Margaret Maddocks (Health & Social Care) and Emma Jones (Sports) confirm observations that Tricia and Anthony made, that the Wii has drawn less confident students into getting involved in class activities, with a positive impact on confidence and self-esteem. They also agree that it was good for group working and, therefore, group cohesion too.

Margaret is convinced that this has had a very positive effect on student learning too. About using the Wii for her lessons on child growth and physical development, she says: “Not only were they discovering things for themselves, experiencing the exercises gave them a better understanding of what it might mean for children and for older people. It then sparked deeper discussions about issues such as deterioration in old people.”

Both Margaret and Emma plan to continue with use of the Wii. Tricia feels it has certainly opened staff up to the potential of learning through game playing and entertainment. She is impressed not only that the Wii brings interactivity into the classroom, but also with its flexibility, enabling tutors to get their students working individually, in small groups or in teams depending on the activity.

Anthony thinks that growing use will put pressure on their Wii equipment for loan, and result in subject departments budgeting to purchase their own. Although some resource managers might see the Wii as a waste of money, Anthony's recommendation is that they should think again: “Even if you just think of the value for a Sports student, being able to look at health profiles and training programmes for development. You can spend a lot of money on subject-specific software but with the Wii, for just over £200 you can get something that can be used across many different subject areas. It might not be perfect, you may have to work with, and adapt what's available in the technology, but it certainly represents good value for money.”

Advance notice of new JISC infoNet event...

In May 2010, we are hoping to host a new Embedding BCE workshop from JISC infoNet. This follows an 18-month project working with five institutional partners, that reviewed how core business functions such as Finance, IT, Information Systems etc. support or raise barriers to working with employers and external partners.

The workshop will cover both the methodology used, including bespoke tools, and the generic findings from the institutional case studies.

It will be of interest to any institution wishing to review its own external engagement activities.

New JISC TechDis toolbar launched...

Strategic self-assessment tools

JISC TechDis has recently launched a Beta version of its new browser toolbar.

The simple answer to this is 'yes'. The generic eLPS (eLearning Positioning Statement) and WeLPS (WBL eLearning Positioning Statement) Tools** are divided into seven components; these can be utilised individually when appropriate, and offer all stakeholders the opportunity to become engaged in the self-assessment process. The seven components cover:

This free application can be installed on a website or downloaded onto an individual PC to provide benefits for anyone using the internet, especially those in education or with a disability.

JISC TechDis has worked with the University of Southampton's School of Electronics and Computer Science to create this updated and enhanced browser toolbar. It replaces the original toolbar which was developed in 2005.

The toolbar can be downloaded at www.techdis.ac.uk/ gettoolbar, where you can also find further information about the toolbar and its features, including details of a ‘Lite’ version, as well as installation instructions.

In light of the introduction of Becta’s online Generator* self-assessment tool (promoted in our last newsletter), staff in some of our learning providers have asked whether other self-assessment tools which RSC Northwest had previously made available and promoted are still relevant.

 Staff Development  Infrastructure & Equipment  Managing & Implementing ILT & eLearning The application of, and outcomes from, the two tools can provide Common Inspection Framework evidence of engagement, self-awareness, priorities, and strategic direction.

You can contact RSC Northwest for access to the eLPS tool by emailing a request to support@rsc-northwest.ac.uk. *Generator is an online self assessment tool to enable learning providers to improve their strategic deployment of technology, the relevance of which is enhanced by its link to current and possible future funding. RSCs support Generator with training and guidance.

**The WeLPS and generic eLPS tools were adapted from the eLPS tool originally developed by NIACE, in partnership with Becta and CEL.

Safeguarding and E-Safety Safeguarding and E-Safety is rightly a hot topic at the moment. Following on from the Byron Review (March 2008), the Government recently launched its web safety code alongside a policy to make using the internet safely a compulsory part of the curriculum for primary schoolchildren in England from 2011.

The whole topic of Safeguarding and E-Safety is not easy to cover well in a brief newsletter article, but with Safer Internet Day taking place close to the time of publication of this newsletter, we thought it might be useful to offer you a few useful links to follow up on.
