PORTFOLIO 2014-2019| JISHNU MURALI
JISHNU MURALI DATE OF BIRTH| 13 NOVEMBER, 1995
ABOUT ME Hi, I am Jishnu, a B.arch graduate from Sushant School of Art and Architecture, Gurgaon, India. Over the past five years, I’ve developed an eclectic approach towards architecture and the built form. Architecture for me exists not only in the detailing of a structural system, but also in the most modest solutions that cater to human beings and the living environment. My portfolio presents a coherent idea of my design ideologies, evolved over the years through diverse projects, each with their own challenges. Thankyou for having a look at my portfolio! I’d be happy to contribute to your firm.

0 1 MASK A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT CENTRE FOR AIR POLLUTION | ARCHITECTURAL THESIS
SEMESTER | X SITE | Sikanderpur, Gurugram, Haryana BUILT UP | 25,000 sqm SITE AREA | 4.5 acre AIR, ONE OF THE MOST ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR SURVIVAL OF THE LIVING HAS BECOME A GLOBAL GARBAGE. HUMAN BEINGS, FOR SEVERAL YEARS HAVE NEGLIGENTLY DESTROYED OUR ENVIRONMENT FOR UNSUSTAINABLE BENEFITS OF “DEVELOPMENT” AND “GLOBALIZATION”. THE RATE AT WHICH WE ADVANCE USING OUR LIMITED RESOURCES IS MAKING THE AIR AROUND US LESS VIABLE TO BREATHE IN. POLLUTANTS AND TOXIC CHEMICALS IN THE AIR POSE HIGH LEVELS OF HEALTH RISKS CAUSING SEVEN MILLION DEATHS PER ANNUM. MY THESIS INVESTIGATES SYSTEMS AND INTERVENTIONS THAT CAN PROVIDE HUMAN BEINGS WITH STRATERGIES TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION THROUGH THEIR DEVELOPMENTAL PROJECTS. AT FIRST, AN OVERALL STRATERGY IS CREATED AT AN URBAN LEVEL BY REDESIGNING PUBLIC SPACES THAT WILL SPREAD AWARENESS OF THE ISSUE. FURTHER, THE PROBLEM IS CATERED TO AT A MICRO LEVEL BY IDENTIFYING A SUITABLE TESTING SITE FOR AN INTERVENTION THAT WILL LOCALLY IMPROVE AIR QUALITY IN THAT PARTICULAR AREA.

Need for the
Project
Causes
-Large-scale construction in Delhi-NCR
-Traffic menace in Delhi
-Stagnant winter winds lead to the settling of dust particles and pollutants in the air and result in smog.
-Industrial pollution and garbage dumps are increasing air pollution.
-Poor public infrastructure and public transport.
Aim and Rationale Self Sustainable built form
bringing back the nature to the cities
-Large-scale construction in Delhi-NCR
interactive social spaces
better landscape
installations
spreading awareness
purifying the surrounding air
reducing carbon emission from vehicles
promoting cycle tracks and pedestrian paths
Site Selection
Macro Level - Air quality index of different localities within Gurugram was calculated to locate the site with
Sector 14, Gurugram AQI 196 DLH Cyber Hub AQI 200
maximum AQI. - The result showed that Sikanderpur had the highest AQI. - Sikandarpur is a metro station on the Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro and since November
HUDA City Centre AQI 198
2013, acts as an interchange station for Rapid Metro. This interchange station sees a large crowd going to office and important places
IFFCO Chowk AQI 194
along this line. It beneets commuters who previously reached these places by auto or bus. Sikanderpur Metro station AQI 224
Service lanes jammed by autos, illegal parking on the roadside leaving little space for movement, private buses and cabs stopping randomly to pick-up or drop passengers — these are only some of the problems commuters and residents face daily outside the busiest metro stations in the city hence causing air pollution.
Rajiv Chowk AQI 205
Sadar Bazar AQI 201
Areas with most traffic and footfall were shortlisted. Because of the presence of multiple MNCs around the Sikanderpur Metro station the footfall an traffic was found to be more compared to other localities. Since the Bristol Chowk connects golf Course road, Gurgaon- Faridabad road and MG road, the traffic is more.
- Lower density - lesser traffic on roads - thinner roads
- Increase in population - Denser urban fabric - higher density on traffic roads - development of cyber city and first set
Micro Level
- More migration - formation of junctions for better traffic movement - widening of roads
- Denser urban fabric - Construction of Metro completed -junctions have become chaotic because of heavy traffic

Approach and Stratergy
2 The Pavilion
5 Facade Iterations
The pavilion acts as a public space connecting the urban context with the site. The structural frame and invites visitors to seed plants on the grid. An integrated watering system provides the plants with water.

Adding a framework to the facade coated with Titanium dioxide and covered with green to tackle the air pollution.

Research and Development Centre
The building acts as an ‘Urban Sponge’ feeding on polluted air & water of its micro-climate and gives out clean air & water back to the Environment much like the Aquatic sponge which feeds on bacteria and gives out nutrients and oxygen.
