01CONSTELLATION Project Type: Student Residence Date: 2013 Fall Semester Instructor: Martin Bersanni, Aaron Sprecher, Leslie Lok Partner: Mylene Moliner-Roy, Francois Sabourin We propose a collective space for students constellating above the center of Concordia’s downtown campus. With a minimal footprint, the building rises above the city to provide an umbrella for large exterior social gatherings, its eastern-most tower providing a focal point for the entire Boulevard de Maisonneuve. The core of the structure is a space frame system within which is nested an immense auditorium that serves as collector for all important students activities. At its perimeter, a threshold space dissolves gradually, allowing occupants to observe the city below them. Three towers rise above, providing student residences and various other support spaces. At night, the constellation lights up.

If a second crystal palace (7,4000sqm) using purely glass and steel was to be constructed today, what would it be hostin designed building aims to exhibit the studies and researches of universe exploration from major countries. The site situate in Shanghai, a landmark city walkway. Given the pulic nature of the area, the building emphasizes on the interior/exterior ex sphere. The walkway extends into the palace to allow pedestrians walk around the collections of exhibits without entering idea of “public architecture from a different persective.

03 REDEFINING GRIFFINTOWN Project Type: Building Complex Date: 2015 Fall Semester Instructor: David Theodore Neither a social condenser nor simple mixed use buildings, the new development in this near-to-downtwon industrial area explores the potential of hybrid building complex as inspired by Steven Holl and aims at bringing new dynamics to the district. The masterplan shows respect to the immediate surrounding condition and the social context. A consistent architectural language is maintained throughout the three divided parts that are designed by three students invidually. Yet each part has its distinctive feature which is made possible through deliberate program distribution. A contiunous skywalk links the sports facilities together present on site.

04 PHAROS 512 Project Type: Extreme Weather Shelter Date: 2013 Fall Semester Instructor: Michael Jemtrud Partner: Zhenhe Wu, Pierre Fanzhu We present Pharos 512, addressing our concern on sustainability. In the harsh desert environment, shelter could be found within one of the three thick concrete spirals of the tower. Since the twisting volumes were wrapped together with superimposed layers of ring-rails, the building itself was quite immaterial and permeable. Connected to the ring-rails, were rods attached with photovoltaic panels. The latter possessed a dual function, serving as both an energy generator and a shield against the sandstorms that plagued the area; zipping around collecting sunlight and blocking sand.

Not only was the building self-sufficient in terms of energy, other waste-recycling-resource-harvesting systems were integrated into its conception; effectively making it an independent entity, detached from its environment, yet specifically adapted to it. As a result, the beacon looked like a shimmering apparition from afar, an incredibly tall desert mirage.
