EDITORIAL AWARDS

Our readers aren't the only ones who recognize our editorial excellence. Chicago is the first monthly city magazine ever to have won a National Magazine Award for General Excellence, circulation 100,000 to 250,000, back in 2004. The NMAs—the Oscars of the magazine industry—recognized Chicago again in 2013, naming it a finalist in the prestigious Reporting category, alongside such heavyweights as The New Yorker and The Atlantic. Here's a full list of Chicago's editorial honors over the past three years.

The magazine's opening section is packed with grabby stories on the issues of the moment. Among the elements you'll find: •V OX A fast-paced Q&A with a CEO, athlete, or other newsmaker whom everyone is talking about right now—or soon will be.

EDUCATION

• B USINESS Developments in the worlds of economics, entrepreneurship, tech, and big business.

Does University of Chicago’s teeny slip in the college rankings matter?

Y

ou could almost hear the cheers rising from the verdant quadrangles of Hyde Park: In the fall of 2012, the University of Chicago landed higher on U.S. News & World Report’s widely read list of best colleges than any other Midwestern school in history. It ranked No. 4, behind only longtime Ivy League stars Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. This fall, however, the upward trend faltered. Columbia University pulled ahead. The U. of C. now ties with Stanford University at No. 5. ➔

wo years ago, when the hardcharging New York import Chay Yew took the helm at Victory Gardens, the Lincoln Park theatre was in crisis. Subscriptions were dwindling, debt was rising, and the beloved longtime artistic director Dennis Zacek was leaving after a string of wellpublicized disagreements with the theatre’s board. ➔

DINING

Chicago has a world-class restaurant and drinking scene; Chicago has unparalleled, incorruptible critics who tell it like it is.

Can Lincoln Park feel like Santa Monica? BY JEFF RUBY

J

eff Mahin is ready for his closeup. A Lettuce Entertain You chef-partner at the age of 27 (he’s 30 now), Mahin has a hit with Do-Rite Donuts in the Loop—and a mini-empire in Southern California— but this fall he’s launching Stella Barra and Summer House Santa Monica, two adjoining restaurants in Lincoln Park. Stella Barra, a spinoff of Mahin’s artisanal pizzeria on Sunset Boulevard, will grind and cure its own organic Niman Ranch pork. Summer House, a more chef-driven riff on M Street Kitchen, his rustic Santa Monica café dedicated to California cuisine, wants to blow your mind with carrots—specifically, carrots with a bourbon glaze, toasted pumpkin seeds, crispy kale, and aged pecorino. “Nothing will overwhelm simple ingredients,” says Mahin. “It’s about finding out what things are supposed to taste like.” The breezy space, formerly occupied by Tilli’s, includes a retractable glass ceiling that Mahin says is meant to evoke the feeling of sitting on a patio next to an ocean. Wonder if he’ll say the same thing in February. 1954 N. Halsted St. PHOTOGRAPH BY CLAYTON HAUCK

•T ASTE MAKERS A visit to the home of a super-stylish Chicagoan who reveals what he or she loves most—and why.

•D INING OUT Critic Jeff Ruby’s award-winning, in-depth restaurant reviews. •T HE HOT LIST A rip-and-save list of the month’s 10 most buzzed-about spots. • LIQUID Great places to imbibe—plus standout cocktails, spirits, wines, and beers. • BUDGET BEAT Stunningly good meals.
