THE
THE PHILIPPINES AND ITS RISING ECONOMY
The Philippines continues to be one of the fastest growing economies in Asia with a Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 7.2 percent in 2013.
The upsurge of the Philippine economy is the outcome of the robust services sector and the exceptional performances in manufacturing and construction.
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) report cites that the Philippine economy is growing by 6.5 percent in 2014 and 2015, higher than the rest of Southeast Asia. American financial services company Standard & Poor’s (S&P) report raised Philippines’ 2014 growth projection to 6.6 percent.
In 2013, the country’s export earnings amounted to $4.292 billion, an 18.9 percent growth from $3.611 billion recorded value in 2012. This year, the Philippines posted positive export growth rates when the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that the value of the country’s total merchandise exports reached $4.654 billion as of February, 24.4 percent higher than the $3.741 billion in February 2013.
American multinational investment banking firm Goldman Sachs estimates that by the year 2050, the Philippines will be the 14th largest economy in the world. It also included the Philippines in its list of the “Next Eleven Economies.” Goldman Sachs’ criteria for this forecast were macroeconomic stability, political maturity, openness of trade and investment policies, and quality of education. Global financial institutions such as Standard Chartered and Credit Suisse likewise expect strong economic growth with the Philippines back on the map for investors. Credit rating agencies Moody’s Analytics and Fitsch Ratings cite the country’s economic growth that is primarily propelled by public- and private-driven investments. According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Philippines is currently among the top 20 investment destinations in the world. The economy of the Philippines is driven by a young consumer market base and an expanding middle-class sector with high disposable income. In February 2013, the World Bank dubbed the Philippines as the “rising tiger of Asia,” citing the country’s macroeconomic stability as well as the sound and improving fiscal situation of the government.
While electronic products remain as the country’s top export earner, the creative industries show undeniable potential. Furniture and furnishings valued at almost $200 million in 2013, a 35.25 percent growth from almost $100 million value in 2012. The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Gregory L. Domingo and the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc. President Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr. expect a 10 percent growth in merchandise exports in 2014. With 7,107 islands, a wide array of natural resources, and spectacular tourist destinations, the Philippines is one of the top tourist destinations in Asia. United Kingdom’s daily newspaper Telegraph included the country in its list of “20 destinations for 2014.” Known for its popular beach paradise Boracay, the Philippines is among the top ten countries worldwide to visit this 2014, according to British travel guidebook Rough Guides. Strategically located within the world’s fastest growing region, the Philippines is only a few hours’ plane ride away from major Asian destinations like Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Singapore, and Tokyo. It lies at the heart of international shipping and air routes making it an ideal destination for trade and investments because of its lush natural resources, highly skilled and creative people, and an investment and business-friendly environment. |2
Food Philippines is the industry brand for the food sector which unifies the overseas promotional efforts of the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippines Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Under this national brand, the Philippines is positioned as Asia’s most exciting sourcing destination for food exports, being one of the world’s top exporters of fresh fruits and marine products. In a region known to supply ethnic ingredients in the global market, the Philippines stands out as Asia’s most exciting food business destination with its strategic location as a Gateway to Asia. Its large and talented workforce is gifted with the ability to manufacture high-quality, high-value products out of local and imported raw materials for differentiated or niche markets. The Philippines is a major exporter of raw ingredients in the world market. The country is one of the top exporters of fresh and processed marine products, pineapples, bananas, mangoes and papayas as the world market continues its large demand for fresh produce from the Philippines. In 2013, the National Statistics Office reported a total of US$3.0 billion Philippine food exports to the world. The major export markets of the Philippines for fresh and processed fruits are the USA, Canada, South Korea, and The Netherlands. The booming hotel, restaurant, and catering (HORECA) sector in the Philippines provides fertile ground for growing food businesses in the Philippines. The country’s food processing sector makes up for 49.0 percent of the country’s total manufacturing activities, making it an attractive market for ingredients, raw materials, machineries, and packaging materials.
AT SIAL PARIS
As a response to the current trend in the food industry worldwide together with the results of the successful Philippine participation in ANUGA 2013, the country’s industry brand for the food sector known as Food Philippines, will return to Europe to showcase the country’s “terroir” products. Food Philippines is proud to exhibit food products that give the distinct “Taste of the Philippines” at the 50th Salon International de l’Agroalimentaire (SIAL) to be held on 19-23 October 2014 at Paris Nord Villepinte, France. The Philippine participation is organized by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the export promotions arm of the Philippine Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The country will bring to SIAL its top-of-the-line healthy tropical food products such as coconut water and coconut sugar, virgin coconut oil, dessicated coconut; banana chips; tropical dried fruits and beverages; juices in various packaging; canned and processed fish; super frozen yellow fin tuna products; canned and frozen meat; bakery and pastry ingredients; authentic Filipino flavorings, flavor oils, essences, concentrates and instant mixes; ice pops and jellies; and snacks, biscuits, confectioneries, and noodles.
