THE ROCK

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR By: Sierrah Rounds

For many the start of a new year is a chance for a change, a chance for a resolution. Whether it be big or small, to many it’s a big difference in their everyday lifestyle. An author commented on his views of a New Year’s Resolution:

Sierrah is a Freshman at FCS and a newly involved Student Leader of The Rock

“A New Year’s resolution is simply an assessment of, and often a delusional attempt to correct, one’s shortcoming. It should not be surprising that most resolutions are abandoned by the start of the next year. Fortunately the next New Year gives a person an opportunity to make the same resolution” - Unknown

A lot has happened in the past year for me. I moved to Frewsburg, started at a new school, had to make friends all over. I also started going to Trinity UMC. It’s been a great new change, but also difficult at times. I have personally made my own resolution much different than just changing habits in hopes of a better year. My resolution is the opposite. I’ve chosen to accept everything that has happened and leave whatever struggles and obstacles along the way behind; simply leave them in the year 2013. Leaving these behind will help me to focus on school, our youth ministry and my spiritual well- being. Thinking about what the author mentioned in his comment I thought; “What if we all resolved to let go of old spiritual habits?” I think this happens every day for all of us: we sin and agree to not do it again. “Okay Lord, I made a mistake please forgive me and I won’t do it again.” But none of us are perfect, so we do eventually.

God is much like the New Year’s resolution because he gives us a chance to try again without any judgment. The great thing about God is his love and forgiveness towards us when we don’t deserve it- and none of us do. We could plan to put more time into God, yet many of us use the excuse that “we are busy” or “we just don’t have time”. Well, I’m sure God is busy too! Just imagine everything he has in his daily agenda, and still he finds time for us whenever we need it. At The Rock we talk a lot about the things we can change in order to focus our lives more around God. Little things that make a big impact. These things may be difficult at first because we won’t be used to the change, but if we work hard enough it will become a habit and we won’t have to think about it- it will just come naturally. For example, praying before a meal to thank God for the food we have that others, unfortunately, may not. In some countries people are dying from drinking water that is polluted while we have plenty of clean water. We don’t think about this. I don’t.

“What if we all resolved to let go of old spiritual habits?"

These adjustments can easily be our New Year’s resolution. Though they are small attempts or shifts in focus, they mean so much to God!
