SILVES

Silves was the former capital of the Algarve and is of great historical importance . The region has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic, as attested by archaeological remains, including several menhirs. The river Arade, which was navigable, linked the hinterland to the open ocean and allowed the transport of produce and commerce. The town of Silves (Cilpes) was possibly founded during the times of Roman domination, however the region was also settled by other tribes, just like the Celtic. After 713, when the Moors invaded Iberia, Silves became part of the Umayyad Emirate of Córdoba under the Arabic name of Shilb. In the 10th century it was one of the most important towns of western Al-Andalus. In 1189 King Sancho I of Portugal conquered (in the Reconquista) the town with the aid of Northern European crusaders. Sancho ordered the fortification of the city and built a castle which is today an important monument of Portuguese heritage.

VILA DO BISPO | ALJEZUR | CASTELEJO| AMADO | CORDOAMA | CARRAPATEIRA| AMOREIRA Protected landscape status for this area dates from 1988, and in 1995 the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Cape St. Vicent was designated to conserve the outstanding beauty of the coastline and also the region’s unique flora and fauna. Apart from its outstanding wildlife, the area is rich in history with evidence of occupation dating back to prehistoric times. There are also remnants of Roman and Phoenician settlements in the area.

CABO S. VICENTE

Cape St. Vincent is a headland in the municipality of Vila do Bispo, in the Algarve, southern Portugal. It’s the southwestern most point of Portugal and of mainland Europe. Approximately 6 kilometers from the village of Sagres, the cape is a landmark for a ship traveling to or from the Mediterranean. The cliffs rise nearly vertically from the Atlantic to a height of 75 meters. The cape is a site of exuberant marine life and a high concentration of birds nesting on the cliffs, such as the rare Bonelli's eagle, peregrine, falcons, kites, rock thrushes, rock pigeons, storks and herons. The present lighthouse is 24 metres (79 ft) high and was built over the ruins of a 16th-century Franciscan convent in 1846. This lighthouse, guarding one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, is among the most powerful in Europe (the most powerful being Phare du Creach on the French island of Ushant, of the coast of Brittany); its two 1,000 W lamps can be seen as far as 60 kilometres (37mi) away.

EXPERIENCES

we have gathered some great experiences for you to enjoy and get to know better the Algarve region.

SEVEN HANGING VALLEYS HIKING ROUTE This Route was voted "Europe's Best Hiking Destination" in a ranking promoted by European Best Destinations, which was voted by more than 28,000 travelers from 153 countries. The Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos (Seven Hanging Valleys) is one of the most scenic hiking routes of the Algarve. This fairly challenging hike trail of 11.5km (round trip) follows the stunning coastline between Vale de Centianes (Carvoeiro) in the west and the Praia da Marinha to the east, placing it ahead of natural tourist attractions in countries like Norway, England, France or Spain. This is a dramatic coastline formed of massive limestone cliffs that have been savagely eroded to create deep sea caves, perilous sink holes and majestic sea arches. Within the golden cliffs, winter streams have carved out wide valleys (the “hanging Valleys”), in which secluded beaches are sheltered from the power of the ocean.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL CIRCUIT

OF VILARINHA

The Vilarinha Archaeological Circuit, in Fuzeiros Valley, take us to remote times, from Prehistory to the Middle Ages. It was called a small route and has an extension of 7.5 km (duration: 2.30). Here you can see: NECROPOLIS OF PEDREIRINHA - Two adult and one child grave, found scattered by the rocky emergencies that loosely appear on the top of the elevation. ALIGNMENT OF VILARINHA - The 4 menhirs that survive were carved in red “sandstone of Silves” and comprised an alignment with socio-religious functions, built by the first communities that inhabited the zone during the 2nd half of the VI millennium BC and part of the following Millennium (ca 5500 4500 BC). NECROPOLIS OF CARRASQUEIRA- In the Cemeteries previously studied, where identical burial rituals were observed, suggest that necropolis with this type of burial would have its origin in the Visigothic Period. NECROPOLIS OF FORNECA - These monuments are attributed to the High Middle Ages, from the sixth to the seventh centuries, and to the expansion of people from Central Europe.

TRAIL OF THE HEADLANDS This route follows the outline of the coast and extends for 6 km, between the beach of the Molhe, near the mouth of the river Arade, and the beach of Paradise, near the village of Carvoeiro. From the promontory of the Ponta do Altar to the east, a succession of small promontories or promontories alternates with recesses that accommodate small embedded beaches or rocky and stony deposits resulting from old landslides. But the cliffs are the dominant element in the landscape, unfolding in imposing reliefs and of singular beauty. Along the course, the hiker is systematized in interpretative panels, information on geology, lithology and geomorphology, marine ecosystems and coastal vegetation, along with testimonies of the ancient human occupation of the coast.

PENINA CURIOSITIES D. AMÉLIA DE ORLÉANS’ (LAST PORTUGUESE QUEEN) PIANO AT THE PENINA HOTEL & GOLF RESORT After losing all her direct relatives, on February 1st of 1908, D. Amelia comes across the murder of her husband King D. Carlos I, as well as of her eldest son, D. Luís Filipe, throwing her into a profound grief from which she never recovered. She then retired to the Palácio da Pena in Sintra and sought to support her last and only son - King D. Manuel II- in his struggle against the Republicans. On October 5, 1910, the revolution brokes out and the Republic was implanted. D. Amelia fearing for her and her son’s lives, flees with the rest of the Portuguese royal family into exile. She leaves by boat from Ericeira to Gibraltar and then to London. During the escape she takes her belongings, but a piano is not easy to transport and the Queen ends up offering it to her maid, friend and confident. Years later, the maid offers the piano to the unique girl born in a well-known English family - the Stillwell family. John Stillwell, brother of the girl Mary Agnes, would later be the first owner of Penina. It has been here since then ... our real Piano that belonged to our last Portuguese Queen; English by birth but with a very Portuguese heart who uttered the following words on her deathbed: "I love all Portuguese people, even those who have hurt me. PENINA CURIOSITIES PENINA - THE PORTUGUESE BEATLES’ SONG "Penina" is a song written by Paul McCartney whilst in holiday with Linda McCartney in the end of 1968. Paul McCartney himself tells the story about "Penina" in the old McCartney’s fan club magazine "Club Sandwich": "I went to Portugal on holiday and one evening, when I returned to the hotel already a little bit inebriated, I decided to take a few more drinks in the bar. A band was playing and I ended up on the drums. The hotel was called Penina and I then improvised a song about this name. Afterwards someone asked if he could keep the song. I never thought to record it myself ". " Jotta Herre edited the song along with three other original songs of the group. Carlos Mendes has also edited the song, as it is shown in the famous album "The Songs Lennon and McCartney Gave Away - By The Original Artists". As Paul McCartney wrote in "Club Sandwich", the song was given to Jotta Herre and not to Carlos Mendes. Jotta Herre were a band from Oporto, situated in the north of Portugal, and played in Hotel Penina, in the Algarve. Giuseppe, member of Jotta Herre tells: "On that night, we gathered around Paul and Linda, drank together and he suggested: let’s play. It was passed one o’clock in the morning and Paul gave an unforgettable show. He played successively piano, bass, guitar and drums. He played the drums as I never seen one musician play". "Each time more and more people entered the room. Paul returned to the drums and asked "one minute". He started to hum a tune and challenged the rest of the band to try to follow the musical sequence he was playing. It were already four o’clock in the morning and there he composed, played and sang the song words and offered it to the Jotta Herre. Finally, he provided a title to the song, the name of the hotel". Nowadays, the song is registered in the Portuguese Society of Authors as being a Lennon/McCartney authorship, due to the agreement between the two Beatles about composing songs.
