UNSCHOOL ALTERNATIVE LEARNING CENTER
IMAGINE | DESIGN | CREATE environments that enrich the human experience.
UNSCHOOL ALTERNATIVE LEARNING CENTER | Sacramento, CA
San Juan USD acknowledged a need to explore more opportunities for all secondary students so they thrive in their learning and are graduate, college and career ready. In this exploration, they landed on a concept to prototype a new and innovative alternative high school, Unschool. The heart of the campus transformation is around the Global Learning Center (GLC). This space, as requested by the students, for the students, is their central commons and exhibition hall for the campus, bringing all of the students together in a fun, relaxing and flexible space. Adjacent to the GLC is an Advisor Hub that brings the educators together to model the similar behavior and collaboration they are asking for the students to do. The Unschool classroom building is a conversion of a 6 classroom building into an open flexible studio environment that includes a campfire space for focus discussion, a Marker Lab for active indoor/outdoor engagement, as well as the open learning environment. Additional improvements have been planned as part of the campus vision; however, it is contingent on future funding.

When you allow someone to discover, something happens in the human soul. It’s been great having JKAE help make this a reality for so many students, and I can’t wait to keep kids discovering new passions. Gabriel Cooper, Principal San Juan Unified School District
