Choose the right shower for your home There are three basic categories of shower - mixer, power and electric. Which type you choose will depend on how your hot water system works. Follow our guide below to make sure you pick the right shower for your home, or have a chat with your plumber.
Mixer/Thermostatic Mixer A mixer shower takes water from both the hot and cold water supplies and mixes them to achieve the preferred temperature. Thermostatic mixers include a thermostatic device which will accurately maintain the temperature. Some mixer showers will require high water pressures in order to work effectively. These are High Pressure systems. Look out for the HP symbol on selected showers within this brochure.
Power Shower Works in the same way as a mixer shower, but includes an integral pump to boost the ow of water for an exhilarating shower experience. Power showers are ideal if you have low water pressure but should not be used with a high pressure unvented system. For more information about our power showers take a look at www.bristan.com
Electric Shower These are a great choice for larger households where there is high demand for hot water. Electric showers only require a cold water mains feed. This is because water is heated up as it passes through an integral heater within the shower unit, rather than coming from the hot water cylinder, so there’s always enough hot water to go round.

How to identify your water system Most homes in the UK will have a ‘traditional’ hot water system, made up of three elements; a boiler to heat the water, a hot water cylinder to store the heated water and a cold water storage tank for taps and showers, and radiators to heat the property using water from the boiler. This will be the case for many of us, but advances in technology also mean that there are now systems that do not need to store hot or cold water to deliver it on demand, which is great news for small properties which are short on storage space. Use our guide below to identify your water system and find the best shower for you:
Gravity-fed (Vented system)
Unvented System
Combination Boiler
This type of system will be found in most homes in the UK. If you have a gravity system, you’ll have a cold water tank in the loft and a hot water cylinder directly below it (usually in the airing cupboard). The water in the cylinder is heated by a boiler and fed to taps and showers, with the boiler also feeding radiators around the house. As the water in the cylinder is used up, it is replaced with cold from the tank above, which in turn is ‘topped up’ from the mains water supply via the ball valve. To work properly, the pressure from both water sources will need to be balanced. Your plumber will be able to tell you if your system is balanced and if it isn’t, will be able to fit either a pump or a pressure reducing valve (if mains cold water fed).
An unvented system has a hot water storage cylinder that takes cold water directly from the mains. The water is heated by an inbuilt coil which is either operated electrically, or with hot water from the central heating boiler. As the coil gets hot, it heats the cold water within the cylinder ready for use. As everything is under the pressure of mains water, the flow rates are much better and you won’t need a pump to get a powerful shower. The whole heating system is completely sealed (i.e. “unvented”) and they can be installed virtually anywhere, so you might find yours in a storage cupboard. A lot of large new homes will have one of these systems, where there is a high demand for hot water.
A combi boiler can be located anywhere within the home and heats water ‘on demand’ using a heat exchanger when a hot tap is turned on. A combi boiler is fed directly from the mains, so it doesn’t need a hot water cylinder or a cold water tank. It also heats water for central heating. Combi boilers are usually fitted in relatively small houses or flats, where there isn’t a great demand for hot water.

The valve is the most important element because it controls your shower. The model you choose will also effect what add-ons you can have.

Shower Valve with Two Stopcocks
Dual Control Shower Valve
This type of valve has three dials. One dial controls the temperature, while the other two are stopcocks which allow you to divert water to two different outlets. So, for example, you could have a standard fixed head controlled by one stopcock and a bath fill controlled by the other.
These valves include a thermostatic control for temperature and a stopcock which turns the water on or off. This type of valve can be mixed and matched with a shower kit or fixed shower head only.

This model includes a temperature control and a stopcock which you can use to control flow to your shower. The third dial allows you to divert water to an additional two outlets so you could control a showerhead, bath fill and body jets, all from the same valve.
This valve works in the same way as the one to the left however this time, the integral diverter allows you to divert water to an additional three outlets. Just think of the possibilities!

An attachment to the shower pole which allows the shower head to be adjusted up and down to allow for different heights.

Basin Mixer
A detachable showerhead that can be directed to the body by hand.
A basin tap that will mix hot and cold water and deliver it through a single spout.
Mixer Shower
Bath Filler
A shower that mixes hot and cold water supplies together to achieve the required temperature.
Like a basin mixer, a bath filler will mix hot and cold water and deliver through a single spout.
Bath Shower Mixer Bath tap fixture which incorporates a shower attachment.
Bath Shrouds Used on freestanding baths to cover the pipe work to the bath taps.
Body Jets A shower fixture that emits jets of water to the body.
Pop-up Waste An alternative to the traditional plugs, a pop-up waste comprises of a stopper connected by levers to a control knob on the tap. When the knob is pushed down the stopper is lifted to allow water to drain away. When the knob is pulled up the stopper seals the plug hole.
Recessed Shower Valve A shower control hidden within a finished wall with only the operating handles and a concealing plate visible.
Riser Rail
Clicker Waste A fitted alternative to a plug that you push and click to drain the water.
A vertical rail to allow height adjustment of a shower head. Rigid Riser Showerhead fixed to wall with exposed pipe work from the shower head to the control valve.

Sequential Shower
A flat finishing plate that fits over a shower valve that has been recessed into the wall.
Diverter A shower control that will ‘divert’ the water flow to additional handsets, body jets or (like you see in many hotels) to a bath filler.

Shower Hose A flexible pipe that connects between the showerhead and the shower control.
