Soliloquy Duration: 7 minutes Premiered at faculty recital by Caroline Stinson at Syracuse University, October 2007 2nd Performance by Ignacy Grzelaska at Ossia Concert, Kilbourn Hall, Eastman School of Music 3rd Performance by Jonathan Golove at June in Buffalo Festival 2009 Recorded by David Russell at Cleveland Composer's Institute of Recording July 2011 Soliloquy

There is something liberating about being able to talk, and talk, without being interrupted. Written in late February, early March 2007 on an airplane, I used the solitary moments I had on the plane to express what I wanted to express without someone interrupting my thoughts. I tried to let it all out. That’s the beauty of soliloquies—you can talk, and talk about anything, or nothing, at the same time, and no one is there to interrupt you. On the macro level, I used two types of material for the piece representing to me two opposing thoughts: lines comprising either harmonics, pizzicato or bowed lines, and then the chords. This material goes back and forth in the soliloquy tied together by an overarching harmonic palette. For me, this piece represents the process of reaching a common ground: You start out with one thought, which spurs other thoughts, and those ideas take precedence at one point, and you go back and forth until you come to some sort of conclusion... or maybe an answer can’t be reached after all. Maybe, the purpose of the soliloquy is to let all of your thoughts out regardless of the point.
