aka: Gestalt laws of grouping

first proposed by Gestalt psychologists to account for the observation that humans naturally perceive objects as organized patterns and objects. Gestalt psychologists argued that these principles exist because the mind has an innate disposition to perceive patterns in the stimulus based on certain rules.

principles of grouping

VISUAL ORDER 14

6

figure/ground - Seeing an image due to its destinction from its background

7

VISUAL ORDER 14

8

similarity - Grouping things based upon visual resemblence

VISUAL ORDER 14

10

proximity - Grouping of items due to their relative location to one another

11

VISUAL ORDER 14

12

closure - An interpreted connection between things due to the space between them

VISUAL ORDER 14

continuance - A composition of elements suggesting movement

A page layout

It is the placement or arrangement of certain aspects of a work. It is essentially the way a compostion is arranged and organized. The arrangement of different elements can be categorized by different types of balance.

compositional balance

VISUAL ORDER 14

30

symmetric balance - A composition of similar parts facing each other or around an axis

31

VISUAL ORDER 14

32

asymmetric balance - Not being identical along both sides of a symmetrical line

33

VISUAL ORDER 14

34

ambigous balance - When the equality of a composition is indistinguishable

35

VISUAL ORDER 14

36

nuetral balance - When there is no particular focal point and the image seems balanced throughout the composition

Jonn Klinger

desn 200 in the graphic design program at the kcai—michael kidwell, assistant professor.

In most of the images used, I tried to make them as geometric or as abstract as possible. I didn’t want any figures to be involved in the photography. Many of the photos I used were taken originally in black and white and I choose to leave them that way without adding any masks or colored gradients. http://jonnklinger.blogspot.com/vscom
