Petra Martin Head Coach Third Season Maryland, ‘03
and sixth place in the 200 breaststroke. Danner earned All-American honors in 2010 and honorable mention All-American status in 2009. She was also named the Female Break-Out Swimmer of the Year by the Collegiate Swimming Association. In addition, Martin coached Eric Knight to Division I top 25 performances in the 50 and 200 freestyle. He broke the CAA record in the 200 freestyle in 2010 and received the Male Career Improvement Award by the Collegiate Swimming Association. Martin further assisted in the coaching of Kate Zeigler, an Olympian and world record holder. Before her work at George Mason, Martin served as the assistant swimming coach at the University of Maryland from 2003-2004, after graduating from the university in 2003.
Petra Martin will begin her third season as the head coach of the Bowling Green State University women’s swimming team in the fall of 2012. During her first two seasons, her athletes have accomplished many impressive feats. During the 2011-12 season, the Falcons established themselves early by dominating John Carroll and Oakland in a triangular meet and then finishing third at the TPSC Invitational in December. By February, the team was ready to shine at the MAC Championships. During the three-day event, the team established 35 personal records, 11 season-best times and four school records -- including new individual records in the 200 backstroke (Alexa Harris) and 100 breaststroke (Alexis Kain). Kain earned second-team All-MAC honors by winning silver medals in the 100- and 200-breaststroke. Prior to the season, Kain and teammate Amanda Rom qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100-meter breaststroke event. The pair also competed at the 2011 U.S. National Championships. The 2010-11 season marked a culture change in Falcon swimming that resulted in improvement in the team’s fortunes. The team won three of its seven dual meets during the regular season after winning only once in 2009-10. Even in its losses, the team was competitive, falling to Eastern Michigan by only 22 points and to Michigan State by only 37. The Falcons showed strength at the Eastern Michigan Invitational by finishing fourth overall, ahead of Michigan State and Toledo. At the Mid-American Conference Championships, the team placed sixth for its best league finish in three years. Alexis Kain broke school records in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, and school records were also set in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays. Team members also eclipsed NCAA “B” qualifying standards five times at the MAC title meet. Since the end of the season, two Falcons (Jen Beatty and Sarah Reinink) were named to the Academic All-MAC team. Three others (Alexis Kain, Amanda Rom, Vicky Yu) were named Mid-Major All-American honorable mention by CollegeSwimming.com. Martin has extensive international, collegiate and amateur experience as an athlete and coach. She came to the Falcons with eight years of experience with the Czech National Swim Team, three years of experience as a member of the University of Maryland swim team, four years of experience as an assistant coach in the collegiate ranks and several years of experience through stints as coach of various amateur swim teams.
During her time at Maryland, Martin assisted in virtually every aspect of the team. She held recruiting duties, assisted international student-athletes, supervised workouts and training, and performed fundraising and promotional work for the Terrapins. Martin also has experience with several different amateur teams. She worked as the associate head coach for the Fort Belvoir Swim Team in Alexandria, Va. and coached 80 adult triathletes as the head coach of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training. Martin served as both general manager and head coach of the Potomac Raiders Swim Club from 2003-2005 and was also the head coach of the Maryland Masters Swim Team. Martin’s international and collegiate swimming experience served as a starting point to her coaching career. She swam for the University of Maryland from 2000-2002 and earned honorable mention All-American status in 2001 for the 200- and 400-meter freestyle relays. She also earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference status in 2001 by helping her 200-meter freestyle relay team set a school record time of 1:31.34. Martin earned Academic All-American honors in each of her seasons as a collegiate swimmer. She competed internationally for the Czech National Swim Team from 19962004 and represented the team at various events, including the European Championships. Martin was ranked in the top 25 worldwide in the 50 butterfly and the 50 freestyle during the year 2000. In that same year, she broke a Czech national record. After earning three separate degrees at Maryland, Martin secured a bachelors degree in physical education from Emory University’s Oxford College in 2004. She is married to Andrew Martin, a former All-American swimmer at Kenyon College, and the couple has a daughter, Caden.
Prior to becoming head coach at BGSU, she spent three seasons as an assistant coach at George Mason University. While at George Mason, Martin coached several World Championship trials qualifiers and worked directly with swimmers who finished as high as second at the NCAA National Championships. Her sprinters broke numerous school and Colonial Athletic Association records, and they achieved NCAA Division I “A” and “B” qualifying standards. During the 2009-10 season, Martin coached Ashley Danner to a second place finish at the Women’s NCAA Division I Championships in the 100 breaststroke

Michael Shelby is in his second season as Bowling Green State University’s assistant swimming coach after helping the Falcons continue their growth in 2011-12 under new head coach Petra Martin. Prior to BGSU, Shelby served as assistant coach to Paul Graham at Ashland University for three seasons. While at Ashland, Shelby was involved in every aspect of the men’s and women’s teams -- teams that Shelby helped coach to enormous success in the pool. In 2010-11, Ashland finished fifth (women) and 11th (men) at the NCAA Division II National Championships. The women’s team won the national championship in the 200 freestyle relay for the second consecutive year. Those are Ashland’s first-ever relay championships and the first national titles in swimming in any event for Ashland since 1998. The two teams combined for eight medals, including a silver and six bronze. The women’s team finished seventh at the national meet in 2009-10, while the men’s team placed tenth overall. Each team finished third at the GLIAC championships. Also in that season, Ashland senior Sean McGraw was named an ESPN the Magazine first-team Academic All-American. In Shelby’s first year at Ashland, 2008-09, eight of Ashland’s male swimmers earned All-America honors for their work in the pool. Prior to coaching at Ashland, Shelby coached for two years as a graduate assistant at Ohio University. While with the Bobcats, he was active in recruiting. He also designed and implemented workout regimens for the sprint group. Shelby videotaped for the team, and he helped coach stroke technique, as well as proper starts and turns. Shelby also attended Ohio University as an undergraduate and graduated in 2005. While an undergrad, he swam for the Bobcats. During his time at OU as an athlete and coach, the Bobcats won six individual Mid-American Conference gold medals and captured the 2008 team conference championship. His teams included two Olympic trials qualifiers and ten first-team All-MAC swimmers. As a swimmer, Shelby qualified for and competed at the World Championship trials in April 2005. He holds OU records in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays and won MAC gold medals in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle relay. Shelby also owned the 18-24 year-old Masters national record in the 50 butterfly and was named team Most Valuable Player in 2005. He earned his masters degree in coaching education from Ohio University in 2008.
Rita Kalmikova enters her second season as volunteer assistant coach of the Bowling Green State University swimming team in the 2012-13 season. Kalmikova arrived at Bowling Green after spending four successful seasons as the assistant coach at the other Bowling Green – Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Ky. At WKU, Kalmikova was primarily responsible for the individual medley and breaststroke swimmers. She was also responsible for developing mental preparation techniques for all Hilltopper swimmers and divers. She designed, planned and implemented workout regimens and scouted opposing teams. She served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and arranged team travel. She also assisted with competition scheduling. Kalmikova’s teams enjoyed conference and national success during her four seasons. The women’s swimming and diving team won three consecutive Sun Belt Conference championships from 2008-2010 and finished second in 2011. The men’s team won the SBC championship in 2010 and also finished second last spring. At the 2011 SBC Championships, Kalmikova’s swimmers won the men’s 100 breaststroke, men’s 400 medley relay and women’s 200 medley relay. They also won silver medals in the women’s 100 breaststroke, women’s 400 IM, men’s 200 medley relay and women’s 400 medley relay. Kalmikova’s swimmers set 11 SBC and 53 school records during her four year tenure. She also helped train butterfly swimmer Claire Donahue, who was the silver medalist in the 100 butterfly at the 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Donahue, who finished fourth at the NCAA meet in 2010, set a school record while setting a new WKU standard for highest-ever finish at an NCAA meet. Prior to coaching at WKU, Kalmikova was an assistant coach at Union (N.Y.) College. While there, she helped the Union women’s team set a school record for most points scored at an NCAA championship meet. The team also broke several records under her watch. She helped develop strength programs at Union and was the Head Master’s swimming coach. She also has experience as a volunteer coach for the Latvian National Swim Team (1997-2001) and as a senior swim coach for the Bolingbrook Swim Club (2001-2004). Kalmikova’s amateur career included collegiate swimming at Lewis (Ill.) University, where she graduated in 2005. At Lewis, she was named Most Valuable Swimmer twice and served as the team captain. She finished in second-place in the 200 breaststroke at an NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships, as she qualified for the national meet three times. She was also named All-American five times. Kalmikova is a two-time Olympian for Latvia. She was a world championship team member and a four-time World Cup team member. She was named “Best Latvian Female Swimmer” in 1996 and 2000. She also holds the Latvian national record in the 200 breaststroke.

After a national search, Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey was appointed President of Bowling Green State University on March 22, 2011. Dr. Mazey’s extensive experience in Ohio public universities and with implementing strategic plans, coupled with her understanding of the role higher education has to play in the state’s well-being, led the BGSU trustees to select her as the
Before becoming president of BGSU, she served from 2009-2011 as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Auburn University. In that capacity, she oversaw the academic programming for twelve colleges and was responsible for fostering the advancement of the university’s strategic plan. While at Auburn, Dr. Mazey was chair of the Enrollment Management Council, the University Campaign Feasibility Task Force, and the Efficiency Task Force. In addition, she served on the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Council on Academic Affairs Executive Committee.

Dr. Mazey has served as a grants reviewer and consultant to HUD and the U.S. Department of Education in addition to being a consultant to the Appalachian Regional Commission and numerous local governments, colleges and universities. She and her late husband of 40 years, Bruce, had two sons, Bryan and Zackary. The older, Bryan, has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Wright State University and a master’s in engineering management from the University of Dayton. He works for GE Aviation in the aerospace industry. He and his wife, Michele, have two young children and live near Cincinnati. The younger son, Zackary, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in accountancy and finance and received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Dayton School of Law. He practices law in Charleston, W.Va.
From 2005-2009, she was Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University (WVU), where she led a collegewide implementation of the WVU 2010 Strategic Plan and served on the Council to Implement the University’s Strategic Plan. In addition, she served on the Presidential Search Committee, the Enrollment Management Council, and the WVU Research Corporation. She also played a leadership role in the university’s Advanced Energy Initiative and nanotechnology research effort. She was a board member of the West Virginia Humanities Council, the Monongalia/Preston County United Way and the West Virginia NASA Space Grant Consortium. Prior to being appointed Dean at WVU, Dr. Mazey served for seven years as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University. She was founding director of the Center for Urban and Public Affairs at Wright State and served in that capacity for eleven years, from 1983-1994. During that time, she was the university’s representative to the Ohio Board of Regents’ Urban University Advisory Committee. In addition, she served as chair of the Department of Urban Affairs and Geography and led the creation of a Master of Public Administration Program. From 1993-1996, Dr. Mazey held the title of Distinguished Professor of Professional Service at WSU. Dr. Mazey received her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in urban geography in 1977 and taught at that institution for two years before joining the faculty of Wright State University in 1979. In 1996-1997, Dr. Mazey was the appointed Director of the Office of University Partnerships for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). In that capacity, she had oversight of HUD’s $25 million in grant programs to colleges and universities across the country. In addition, she served as HUD’s liaison to higher educational associations, other federal agencies, and colleges and uni-

administration Greg Christopher, Director OF intercollegiate ATHLETICS Greg Christopher is in his sixth year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Bowling Green State University. Christopher, the 12th fulltime athletic directer in school history, began his duties in July of 2006 and has accomplished a great deal in his first five years in Northwest Ohio. Christopher oversees an 18-sport program which has a budget of $17 million and 75 full-time employees. BGSU, which is a member of the MidAmerican Conference (MAC) and Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), is one of 13 programs in the country which sponsor Division I-A football and compete in men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey on the Division I level. A native of West Lafayette, Ind., Christopher has moved the BGSU athletic department forward in multiple areas in his first five years. The Sebo Athletic Center was completed in the fall of 2007, featuring expanded and state-ofthe-art sports medicine and rehabilitation facilities as well as a strength and conditioning area for all University student-athletes. The new front entrance for Doyt L. Perry Stadium, the building also houses administrative offices as well as offices and meeting rooms for the football Falcons. The Sebo Athletic Center is part of $57 million in new or renovated athletics facilities completed during Christopher’s tenure. That facilities list includes the new Keefe Tennis Complex, a renovation to Whittaker Track, improvements at baseball’s Steller Field, the FieldTurf inside Perry Stadium, renovations to the BGSU Ice Arena, and the new $36 million Stroh Center. Incremental facility improvement plans are also underway for other BGSU athletics venues. Athletic achievements of Christopher’s five years include nine conference banners. Highlights include the remarkable run of women’s basketball. The women’s hoops Falcons became the first team in conference history to advance to the ‘Sweet 16’ of the NCAA in 2006-07, winning a MAC record 31 games along the way. Curt Miller’s team made its fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, following the Falcons’ seventh straight conference title. In Christopher’s tenure, football has played in two post-season bowl games, including the 2008 GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and the 2009 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The 2007 football team also shared the MAC East Division title. In 2008-09, the men’s basketball team won its first regular season MAC title in decade, advancing the NIT post-season tournament. And baseball won three consecutive MAC East Division titles, including overall conference regular season championships in 2008 and 2009. In the classroom, the Falcons have flourished, as the number of studentathletes with a GPA of 3.0 or above has increased in each of the last four years. In 2010-11, BGSU student-athletes set a new bar for cumulative GPA record, charting a 3.08 mark, and 196 BG student-athletes had a GPA of at least 3.0. The student-athlete graduation rate is greater than the overall student body’s graduation rate. Christopher implemented the Falcon Leadership Academy, a leadership development program for BGSU student-athletes. Christopher, along with several other administrators in the athletics department, serves as an instructor for the class, which represents each of the department’s 18 varsity sports. Christopher’s background in fundraising and development has been evident in his first five years at BGSU. There have been double-digit percentage increases in the external funding areas, including development, corporate marketing, licensing and concessions. Christopher has furthered the department’s logo transition and integrated an external communications plan. Christopher came to BGSU after spending nearly a decade at Purdue University in his hometown. He served as Associate A.D. for External Relations and
John Purdue Club Director at Purdue University. Christopher, who had been at the school since 1997, was a member of the department’s senior staff. He was accountable for external and revenue-related areas for Purdue’s $50 million department. In his role, he oversaw several areas, including development, marketing, promotions and advertising, athletic licensing and sports information. Under his leadership, Purdue raised $17.2 million in total giving for Athletics in his final year there. He also played a significant role in a seven-year campuswide capital campaign which raised $111 million for Athletics during that period. Projects that came to fruition in that time frame include tripling the number of endowed athletic scholarships and several facility additions or renovations. Among the facility projects were an indoor golf training center, football stadium renovation, aquatic center, indoor tennis center, and basketball video board campaign. He also was the advisor for Purdue’s chapter of Athletes-in-Action, and served a period of time as the sport administrator for Purdue’s men’s and women’s tennis programs. Christopher served as Executive Director for the Society of Professional Journalists in Greencastle, Ind., from 1994 to 1997 after joining the organization in 1991 as its Marketing and Development Director. During that time, he managed a staff of 15 for the nation’s largest not-for-profit journalism organization. His tenure focused largely on external relations, fueling growth that doubled the net worth of the foundation and association. He also improved relations with SPJ’s 250 local chapters and negotiated contracts and corporate partnerships. Prior to joining SPJ, Christopher was an Account Executive at WWWV-FM in Charlottesville, Va., from 1988-90. In that capacity, he designed and managed station promotions, including partnerships with the athletics program at the University of Virginia. He also was part of the “Page Program” at NBC in New York in 1988 where he served as a research analyst, assisting the Manager of Sports Programming and Market Analysis in research of television sports. Christopher also produced network sports tracking reports and surveys of major league sports. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from MAC-member Miami University in 1988 and earned his MBA from the institution in 1991. He played football for one season before the former linebacker’s career was cut short due to injury. In 1987-88 and 1990-91, Christopher was involved as a television color commentator in football and play-by-play voice for men’s ice hockey which aired on regional cable television and WPTD-TV in Dayton. He also served as a graduate assistant in the Office of Admissions at Miami in 1990-91. Christopher is a member of the Mid-American Conference’s External Relations Committee, current Chair of the CCHA Council, and is the women’s basketball administrative chair for the MAC. In the spring of 2008, he was appointed to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee. Christopher is active in Northwest Ohio with the Bowling Green Community Foundation, the American Red Cross and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Christopher, 45, is married to the former Tina Smith of Leetonia, Ohio. The couple has a son, Zachary, 15, and two daughters, Megan and Allison, ages 13 and 11. Cooper Pool
Cooper Pool The home of the Falcon swimmers, Cooper Pool received a face lift in the summer of 2001. Included in the upgrades were: Retiling of the deck, installations of five windows, and air-conditioning installed throughout the student recreation center. Cooper doubles as the home site for the Falcon Intercollegiate women’s swimming team and the Bowling Green Swim Club age group team. The pool is 50 meters long by 25 yards wide and contains 22 lanes with depths ranging from four to 17 feet. Diving stations with one and three-meter spring boards are utilized for intruction, recreation and competition. Five-and-seven and one-half meter diving towers are utilized for competition. Is it a popular spot for recreational lap swimming, water basketball, water polo and water aerobics. It is also utilized for instruction by the School of HMSLS.
