BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY Department of Athletics

Invest In Success Bowling Green State University has a proud tradition of success in Intercollegiate Athletics. With one individual and two team national championships, as well as multiple Olympic gold medalists, Falcon Athletics has established itself on the national level. In just the past few years, the Falcons have won two Mid-American Conference Football Championships, a MAC regular season title in Women’s Basketball, and a bid to the NCAA regionals in Gymnastics. Our student-athletes achieve at record-setting levels in the classroom as well. Combined, BGSU’s 411 student-athletes posted an all-time best 3.187 cumulative grade point average through the 2015 fall semester. Among our student-athletes are 37 who boast a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 and 82 who recorded a perfect 4.0 during the fall semester. Approximately 64 percent of all student-athletes hold a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better. BGSU Men’s Cross Country, Women’s Golf and Gymnastics were recently recognized by the NCAA as teams scoring among the top 10 percent in their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate. Through your support of the Falcon Club, we can continue to build something special at Bowling Green State University. Continued support of our 18 intercollegiate athletic teams helps to ensure the success of our students on the fields of play and in their future careers. We encourage you to “Invest in Success” by becoming a member of the Falcon Club, increasing your membership level, or renewing your membership for 2016-17 now. On behalf of our students and coaches, I truly appreciate your continued, or increased, support and look forward to seeing – and hearing – you in Bowling Green supporting our student-athletes. Regards,

Mary Ellen Mazey, Ph.D. President, Bowling Green State University

W ha t i s t h e F a l c on Club? The mission of the Falcon Club, the fundraising arm of the BGSU Department of Athletics, is to cover the annual cost of student-athlete scholarships through private support. Your gifts allow us to provide the resources necessary for 411 student-athletes to have a world-class experience. Investments in the Falcon Club have one overarching purpose: to provide our studentathletes with the maximum amount of scholarship support allowed by the NCAA in every sport we sponsor. These scholarships allow BGSU to recruit, retain and field the outstanding student-athletes needed to compete in the MAC and WCHA. Falcon Club contributions help support the dreams and aspirations of our student-athletes in the classroom, on the field and in the game of life. An unrestricted gift to the Falcon Club will directly impact the lives of our student-athletes. Unlike a restricted, sport-specific gift, every unrestricted membership gift the Falcon Club receives goes directly to scholarship support for all 18 of our athletic programs. Athletic scholarship costs have risen from $5.5 million just five years ago to more than $6.4 million in the coming year. Our need is great, but our desire to provide the best possible experience for these student-athletes is greater. Now, more than ever, your generous support of the Falcon Club can be a game-changer for BGSU Athletics!

Ac a d e m i c / P e r s o nal Successes 2015 was another outstanding year off the fields of play for BGSU student-athletes:

BGSU student-athletes’ service participation includes:

BGSU’s 411 student-athletes had a collective average GPA of 3.187, exceeding the 3.006 mark set by the general student body (the 11th consecutive year the student-athlete GPA has exceeded that of the overall student body).

• Falcons Back in Action — An annual welcome back reception and personal development for student-athletes.

The Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of the 18 BGSU athletic programs improved to 85 percent, with seven teams posting a perfect 100 percent.

• Networking Night — A career development opportunity for our student-athletes.

264 of the 411 student-athletes (64 percent) had a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater — an increase of 20 student- athletes from the year before and 42 from two years prior.

• 37 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA. Not only do BGSU student-athletes excel in the classroom, but they also have many opportunities to be a part of the Bowling Green community and volunteer their time.

The Case for Unrestricted Falcon Club Membership Gifts

1 2

Our greatest current need is for unrestricted contributions to the Falcon Club which will allow us to fully fund all sports at the maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA (see page 13). Falcon Club member contributions that are unrestricted offset our No. 1 priority: keeping pace with the rising costs of athletic scholarships.

3

New NCAA legislation allowing us to provide our student-athletes with the true cost of attending BGSU has further increased our grant-in-aid budget to more than $6.4 million.

4

Until all 18 sports at BGSU are fully funded at the NCAA’s allowable scholarship limits, ALL of our programs will have critical funds diverted toward this goal.

How Can You Help? We ask that you make an annual, unrestricted membership gift to the Falcon Club, of which every dollar will go to cover the annual cost of FULLY FUNDING all 18 intercollegiate sport programs that are sponsored by BGSU Athletics. The funding model that will allow us to fully fund all 18 sports requires a significant increase in unrestricted gifts to the Falcon Club.

The Falcon Football team won the MAC East Division for the third consecutive season and its second MAC Championship game in three years, and made its fourth straight bowl game appearance.

• Quarterback Matt Johnson was named the MAC’s Offensive Player of the Year. • Women’s Cross Country finished second at the MAC Championship, its most successful season since 2006.

• Rachel Walny finished fifth at the MAC Cross Country Championship and was named the conference Freshman of the Year. • Men’s Cross Country had its best team finish since 2000. • Gymnastics earned a bid to the NCAA Regional Championships for the first time since 1991. •

Lauren Feely won the MAC Gymnastics all-around title, while Laura Mitchell won the balance beam championship and Alyssa Nocella was named the MAC Senior Gymnast of the Year.

• Swimmer Daniela Carrillo won a 200 breaststroke MAC Championship, and advanced to the NCAA Championships in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. • Franziska Wohlert earned a league championship in the 400 individual medley for the Swimming and Diving team. • Men’s Basketball advanced to the MAC Tournament semifinals.

• The Falcon Hockey team won 22 games, advancing to the WCHA Tournament semifinals. With so many BGSU teams trending in the right direction, now is the time to Invest in Success!

Freq u e n t l y A s k e d Q uestions Who can join the Falcon Club? A: Anyone can join the Falcon Club. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan, a community member, an alumnus, a parent, a coach, or other supporter. We encourage anyone who cares about Bowling Green State University to join the Falcon Club. When I join the Falcon Club, where does my money go? A: Unrestricted gifts to the Falcon Club Student-Athlete Support Fund (#300399) will be directed annually to fund the cost of student-athlete scholarships until that total is covered by private philanthropic support. This money will allow BGSU Athletics to provide a world-class experience for student-athletes in all 18 programs. Why is a larger Falcon Club membership such a big priority for the Department of Athletics? A: It is important to the BGSU Department of Athletics that we are innovative leaders in all that we do. With the national conversation now, more than ever, being centered around revenue, it’s important to provide the best possible experience for our student-athletes. Our task is to grow the number of members within the Falcon Club and the number of dollars raised by the Falcon Club to enable BGSU to use other streams of revenue for projects like facility renovations, travel budgets and larger recruiting budgets. Allowing us to fully invest in facilities, travel and recruiting – to name a few needs – while paying for our scholarship bill through Falcon Club support, will enable BGSU coaches to recruit the best possible student-athletes for Bowling Green in the years to come. Until BGSU closes the existing gap between the annual scholarship cost and Falcon Club memberships, we will not fully realize

the capability to invest into world-class facilities at the level of our MAC and national competition. Over time, that deficit widens the facilities gap between us and our peers exponentially. Are Falcon Club contributions tax-deductible? A: All gifts to the Falcon Club are tax deductible as allowed by federal income tax law. The IRS allows an 80 percent charitable deduction for a contribution to educational institutions where, as a result of such contributions, the donor receives preferred seating rights for athletic events. (IRC 170(I) and IRS Publication 526) Donors should always consult their tax advisor. What’s my best option if I only want to support a specific team? A: BGSU Athletics will always honor the donor’s intent when accepting a Falcon Club membership gift. Gifts that are restricted to a specific sport program, however, assist ONLY that program. Unrestricted membership gifts, on the other hand, benefit student-athletes across all 18 BGSU programs by supporting the cost of all of our student-athletes attending BGSU and, ultimately, by funding our greatest need — scholarships. Sport-specific gifts are used at the discretion of each individual program’s head coach. How does Bowling Green’s level of Falcon Club Membership compare to the rest of the MAC? A: In the most recent survey of MAC development offices, BGSU was among the conference leaders with over 2,000 annual contributors, though ranking significantly behind league-leading Toledo and Akron. Where the Falcons are currently lagging well behind is in unrestricted dollars raised via Falcon Club memberships. This data

11

shows that we have a great opportunity to make significant strides in support that would be reflected in the MAC standings! What payment options/plans are available to fulfill my annual Falcon Club pledge? A: Recurring bank transfers allow for a scheduled contribution directly from your savings or checking account.

Simply choose a start date for your pledge online at bgsufalcons.com/donate, and your ongoing payments can be continued indefinitely or on a finite schedule of payments. A minimum Falcon Club membership can be made more manageable in $10 monthly payments, or you may be able to budget an increase to your annual Falcon Club membership by paying in monthly installments. For more information, contact the Falcon Club Coordinator at 419-372-3589.

How many student-athlete scholarships can be offered by Bowling Green every year? A: Per NCAA guidelines, BGSU can offer the following number of scholarships per sport annually. The number we currently offer is listed beside the potential number. The gap between the allowable maximum and what BGSU is offering can be closed with increases in unrestricted giving to the Falcon Club (the chart below does not include Cost of Attendance stipends*): SPORT NCAA MAX BGSU 2015-16 Funding Men’s Programs Football 85 85 Basketball 13

Red denotes sports where scholarships are not fully funded. *Per new NCAA legislation approved in January of 2015, Division I college athletes now can receive athletic scholarships that provide funds to help pay the full costs of attending college, such as travel and other expenses. The change to scholarships allows schools to provide more dollars for college athletes for elements of attending college that are formally defined by federal guidelines. These additional funds are often referred to as “Cost of Attendance stipends,” and have added significantly to the overall cost of grant-in-aid to student-athletes.

Seven Ways to Give

1

Annual Membership in the Falcon Club The annual giving program is the core of private support for BGSU Athletics. A donor becomes a member of the Falcon Club with an annual contribution of $120 or more, or monthly contributions of $10 or more. Gifts can be made by cash, check, electronic funds transfer or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express). Checks should be made payable to the BGSU Foundation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All 2016 BGSU Football season ticket holders who have joined the Falcon Club or renewed their annual membership (minimum of $120) by June 30, 2016, will be guaranteed complimentary game day parking as a benefit of their membership. Parking passes will be tiered according to your annual membership level.

2

Matching Gifts Many companies will match their employees’ contributions to the Falcon Club. Ask your human resources office about your employer’s matching gift policy to multiply the effects of your contribution to the Falcons.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you plan on using your company’s matching gift toward your Falcon Club membership, your gift should be received by the Falcon Club as soon as possible. Many matching gifts require a significant period of time for processing, so please plan the timing of your gift so that the matching gift is received by BGSU Athletics prior to June 30.

3

Endowments An endowed scholarship provides a lasting stream of income because BGSU Athletics holds the gift in perpetuity, investing the principal and using a portion of the annual return to fund scholarship awards. By endowing an athletic scholarship, you will create an enduring link between you and BGSU Athletics, and address the top priority for BGSU: to build the University’s scholarship endowment. There are many vehicles you might consider to establish an endowed athletic scholarship: • A cash gift or other current assets • An irrevocable deferred/planned gift • A bequest, also known as an Estate Gift Once you establish your endowed scholarship, you, your friends or family members can make additional gifts, thereby increasing the value and impact of your scholarship in future years.

4

14

Gift-In-Kind Businesses and organizations may make donations of products and services to the Falcon Club that offset expenses. If you provide products or services that provide relief from expenses that the Athletics Department incurs on an annual basis, your gifts can count towards your membership, and provide a tax benefit for you as well.

5

6

Planned Gifts A planned gift can offer you substantial tax and estate planning benefits and allow you to make a larger and more lasting gift to Bowling Green State University. It can be a gift that BGSU Athletics receives now or in the future, and it is also a way you can be a key supporter while meeting your own financial goals. Planned gifts to Falcon Athletics can be made through charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests and numerous other tax-wise tools.

Capital Gifts Top-notch facilities are not just important for recruiting the finest possible student- athletes to BGSU, but they are also necessary to fulfill our commitment to current student-athletes to provide them with the best possible tools towards their pursuit of their academic and athletic goals. Capital gifts address the facility needs of the entire athletics program and allow BGSU to obtain a competitive advantage.

7

Donor Advised Funds Gifts through Donor Advised Funds (DAFs) are welcome in Athletics; however, there are restrictions imposed by the IRS that impact certain types of DAF contributions, including those that support the Falcon Club. One of the impermissible benefits for a donor or family member to receive as a result of a gift made through a DAF is the right to purchase athletic tickets and/or preferred parking. If you would like to become a member of the Falcon Club and receive corresponding seating/parking benefits, you may make a separate non-DAF gift.

Once you have determined the option or combination of options that fits your philanthropic goals, please contact the BGSU Athletics Development office to document and execute your plans. For more information, please contact Dan Meyer at 419-372-7057 or dbmeyer@bgsu.edu.
