KERRIE BEACH HEAD GYMNASTICS COACH URSINUS COLLEGE ‘99 SIXTH SEASON Kerrie Beach is in her sixth season as BGSU’s head gymnastics Brown’s highest finish since the 2004-05 season. She also coached coach, but her 10th season as an integral part of the Falcon program. Breanne Guy to a Regional performance in the all-around. In her six years Beach has coached one MAC Champion, 12 Regional Qualifiers, five All-MAC Performers and this past season helped Jamilah Ali earn MAC Freshman of the Year, just the third Falcon in school history to do so. Beach’s Falcons have also impressed in the classroom, having coached four Academic All-MAC performers and 33 Scholastic AllAmericans. The 2012 Falcons finished just 2-12 overall, but had more individual awards than any team in the recent past. Four Falcons earned regional honors, the most in school history, Jamilah Ali was named MAC Freshman of the Year and BGSU recorded 10 scores that finished in the top-10 in school history. The Falcons struggled during the regular season in 2011, but rebounded with a fifth-place finish at the MAC Championships, their highest finish since the 2008-09 campaign. In 2010, Beach helped lead the Orange and Brown to a 4-2 MidAmerican Conference record, their highest conference finish since the 2001-02 season. That same season Beach and the Falcons went on to win five consecutive meets, the longest BGSU win streak in over eight years. To top it all off, Beach helped a trio of Falcons qualify for Regionals, the most since the 1982 squad sent three to Regionals as well. In 2009 she helped lead the Falcons to a fourth-place finish at the Mid-American Conference Championships, the Orange and

8

In 2008, her first season at the helm of the Falcons, Beach coached two athletes that qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships. Also in 2008 she coached her team to zero falls and the third highest team score on the balance beam at the Mid-American Conference Championships. From 2003-07 as an assistant coach Beach, helped lead the Falcons to new heights in all areas of the program, including coaching seven gymnasts to top 10 BGSU record performances on balance beam and floor. One of the many athletes she coached was Melissa Popovich who shares the top spot on balance beam with a score of 9.925. Beach came to BGSU after serving as head gymnastics coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, beginning in 2000. Beach was named WIAC Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. She also served as admission counselor for the university. Prior to Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Beach served as Ursinus College assistant gymnastics coach from October 1999 through March of 2000. The Wilton, Conn., native was a gymnast for the Ursinus College program from 1996-1999 and was elected team captain her junior and senior seasons. Beach earned a degree in exercise and sport science in May 1999. Beach and her daughter, Mikayla, live in Bowling Green.

CHAD WIEST ASSISTANT COACH (VAULT, FLOOR) UNIV. OF ILLINOIS ‘11 SECOND SEASON Chad Wiest is in his second year as an assistant coach for the BGSU gymnastics team. In his first year, Wiest helped a young Falcon team improve its regional qualifying score by more than three points and qualify a school-record four gymnasts to NCAA regionals. Wiest coached the vaulting and floor exercise lineups to consistent success, with the Falcon floor lineup cracking the nation’s top 20. Wiest comes to Bowling Green after competing with the Illinois gymnastics program from 2006-11, serving as the team’s captain as a senior. Wiest was a two-time All-American, a floor champion in the Big Ten and finished his career with a handful of academic awards. He became the 2011 Big Ten floor champion, while earning firstteam All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honors as a senior. He

earned All-American status on the floor in 2010, while adding three academic awards, earning the CGA All-America Scholar Athlete, Academic All-Big Ten and the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award as a junior. As a freshman he tied for third at the NCAA Championships on the floor, earning All-American status. Wiest brings leadership to the BGSU program as well, having served as a camp coach and counselor at the Illinois men’s and women’s gymnastics camps from 2007-2010. He helped high-level college bound gymnasts to develop their skills on floor and vault, while assisting on the uneven bars. Wiest graduated from Illinois with a degree in recreation, sport and tourism in 2011.

TAYLOR JONES ASSISTANT ASSISTANT COACH (BALANCE COACH (BEAM) BEAM)

OHIO STATE UNIV. ‘12 FIRST SEASON

Taylor Jones begins her first year as an assistant coach for the BGSU gymnastics team, joining the Falcons in the summer of 2012. She will serve as the Falcons’ main balance beam coach. Jones comes to Bowling Green after completing her own collegiate gymnastics career at Ohio State University, where she competed from 2009-12. Jones served as co-captain of the Buckeyes during the 2011-12 seasons. In her senior year, she led the Buckeyes to their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1990, competing on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise for the team. By the end of her career, Ohio State was a top-10 gymnastics program. In 2009, Jones received Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors, becoming the first Ohio State gymnast to earn the award. She was also recognized that year with the Coaches Award and the title of

Most Dedicated Gymnast. Prior to college, Jones trained at the Dynamo gymnastics club, the same program that produced Olympic gold medalist Shannon Miller. While there, she won the Oklahoma state all-around title six times. Jones brings valuable insight to BGSU with her record of success in club and collegiate gymnastics. She also gained leadership experience as a coach and counselor at Ohio State’s gymnastics camps from 2009-12, coaching high-level gymnasts on all four events. Jones graduated from Ohio State in 2012 with a degree in criminology.

SEASON OUTLOOK

A

s the 2013 gymnastics season approaches, the Falcons are looking to improve on last year’s season-high score of 193.975 in their quest to qualify a full team to the NCAA Regional Championships. Returning all but one athlete from 2012, the core of last year’s team remains intact and is aided by the addition of a strong freshman class. With talent and experience, the Falcons will have an excellent opportunity to showcase upgraded routines and solid performances in 2013. Below, head coach Kerrie Beach provides a detailed account of the Falcons’ prospects on each apparatus, previewing what is sure to be a standout year for BGSU gymnastics.

On vault, a mix of returners and newcomers will compete for lineup spots this season. Senior Danielle Wishart shined on this event with a career high of 9.9 in 2012 , earning a trip to the NCAA Regional Championships as an individual vault specialist. The vault lineup will look to Danielle for another great season of solid scores. In addition, senior Sunny Marchand looks to make her comeback on this event after taking a season off due to injury. Her vault, a Yurchenko layout 1/2, shows power and finesse and she is making strides with it. Junior Megan Harrington, an NCAA Regional qualifier in the all around last season, will make a huge jump in score with her upgraded Yurchenko full on this event. Sophomore Jamilah Ali also returns with her powerful Yurchenko full. Ali was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2012 and an NCAA Regional qualifier. Other gymnasts bringing powerful vaults and 10.0 start values to the team are sophomores Amanda Lievendag and Gina Locigno, along with freshmen Alyssa Nocella and Katrina Carpenter. Uneven bars, a difficult event for the Falcons in 2012, will improve substantially with the newcomers to the program and upgrades from several returning athletes. Leading the way is sophomore Amanda Lievendag. Amanda has spent the fall nailing her giant full-Gienger combination and sticking her beautiful double layout dismount. Joining Amanda at the front of the pack is freshman Alyssa Nocella. Her routine is packed full of difficulty, including a piked Jaeger release and a gi-

SEASON OUTLOOK ant full connected immediately to a double layout dismount. Sophomore Gina Locigno has upgraded her routine to include a piked Jaeger and a new style in her double layout dismount. Katrina Carpenter’s routine also features a piked Jaeger, along with a unique Pak salto and double front dismount. Consistency will be key for her to earn big scores this season. Also contributing to the “freshman force” on uneven bars is Caroline Ellingboe, who is swiftly returning from injury. Caroline performs a piked Jaeger and a clean double layout dismount. Junior Lindsay Koch has upgraded her routine to include a major release, along with her beautiful lines. Senior Monica Eaton, an uneven bars standout throughout her career, looks to return to this event after having elbow surgery this summer. Other highlights on bars will come from sophomores Alex Porter, Jamilah Ali and Rachel Perry along with a clean and steady routine from Megan Harrington. Expect a solid set of routines from the Falcons on balance beam in 2013. Jamilah Ali returns with new upgrades to her difficult routine, including a series of two consecutive layout stepouts. Beam standout Megan Harrington also returns with a new routine. Megan has kept her signature skill, but added a stunning front aerialdouble stag jump connection. Freshman Alyssa Nocella brings another difficult routine to the lineup, including a front aerial landing on both feet. Gina Locigno has been hitting solid routines all fall and looks to be a leader on this event. Other notable gymnasts on beam include junior Megan Valentini, sophomore Maria Salvia and freshman Katrina Carpenter. With powerful tumbling and exciting choreography, the Falcons bring a strong lineup to the floor exercise. Junior Megan Harrington, a quick and dynamic tumbler, will debut a very difficult front double full-punch front as her middle pass. Her choreography and ability to connect to the crowd will elevate her performance. Freshman Alyssa Nocella is coming off a win on floor at the 2012 USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Championships. Her clean tumbling and routine to Falcon marching band favorites should ignite the crowd this season. Jamilah Ali returns with her signature sky-high tumbling and challenging passes, ending with a front double twist. Gina Locigno will once again be a crowd favorite on this event, adding electrifying dance to her routine, along with powerful tumbling passes. Also look for Danielle Wishart, Megan Valentini, Rachel Perry and Katrina Carpenter to bring a variety of tumbling and dance to the lineups this season. The Falcons have put in a great deal of hard work this fall as they move steadily towards the 2013 season. Their goals to be successful at the MAC and NCAA levels are clearly demonstrated in the upgraded routines from the returners and strong recruiting class that has joined the Falcons this fall. While there are individuals to highlight, this 2013 season will truly be a team effort.

ANDERSON ARENA

The Home of

Beginning in 2011, Anderson Arena became a gymnastics-only facility. As the home of BGSU gymnastics, Anderson houses the Falcons’ home meets as well as practices, giving the Falcons a true home court advantage and plenty of space to prepare for the season. Seating 2,800, Anderson Arena is equipped with two vaulting tables, three sets of uneven bars, three balance beams and a floor exercise area complete with tumbling and trampoline strips. Gymnasts are able to train new skills onto softer landing surfaces, allowing for a safe transition to competitive readiness. Anderson Arena also provides the gymnastics team with locker rooms, coaching offices, a training room and a “team” room where athletes can relax, study or watch TV together.

After a national search, Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey was appointed President of Bowling Green State University on March 22, 2011. Dr. Mazey’s extensive experience in Ohio public universities and with implementing strategic plans, coupled with her understanding of the role higher education has to play in the state’s well-being, led the BGSU trustees to select her as the next president of the University. Before becoming president of BGSU, she served from 2009-2011 as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Auburn University. In that capacity, she oversaw the academic programming for twelve colleges and was responsible for fostering the advancement of the university’s strategic plan. In addition, she served on the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ Council on Academic Affairs Executive Committee. From 2005-2009, she was Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University (WVU), where she led a college-wide implementation of the WVU 2010 Strategic Plan and served on the Council to Implement the University’s Strategic Plan. In addition, she served on the Presidential Search Committee, the Enrollment Management Council, and the WVU Research Corporation. She also played a leadership role in the university’s Advanced Energy Initiative and nanotechnology research effort. She was a board member of the West Virginia Humanities Council, the Monongalia/Preston County United Way and the West Virginia NASA Space Grant Consortium.

In that capacity, she had oversight of HUD’s $25 million in grant programs to colleges and universities across the country. In addition, she served as HUD’s liaison to higher educational associations, other federal agencies, and colleges and universities. Dr. Mazey has served as a grants reviewer and consultant to HUD and the U.S. Department of Education in addition to being a consultant to the Appalachian Regional Commission and numerous local governments, colleges and universities. She and her late husband of 40 years, Bruce, had two sons, Bryan and Zackary. The older, Bryan, has a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Wright State University and a master’s in engineering management from the University of Dayton. He works for GE Aviation in the aerospace industry. He and his wife, Michele, have two young children and live near Cincinnati. The younger son, Zackary, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University in accountancy and finance and received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Dayton School of Law. He practices law in Charleston, W.Va.

Prior to being appointed Dean at WVU, Dr. Mazey served for seven years as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Wright State University. GREG CHRISTOPHER DIRECTOR OF INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Greg Christopher is in his sixth year as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Bowling Green State University. Christopher, the 12th full-time athletic directer in school history, began his duties in July of 2006 and has accomplished a great deal in his first five years in Northwest Ohio. Christopher oversees an 18-sport program which has a budget of $17 million and 75 full-time employees. BGSU, which is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) and Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), is one of 13 programs in the country which sponsor Division I-A football and compete in men’s and women’s basketball and men’s ice hockey on the Division I level. A native of West Lafayette, Ind., Christopher has moved the BGSU athletic department forward in multiple areas in his first five years. The Sebo Athletic Center was completed in the fall of 2007, featuring expanded and state-ofthe-art sports medicine and rehabilitation facilities as well as a strength and conditioning area for all University student-athletes. The new front entrance for Doyt L. Perry Stadium, the building also houses administrative offices as well as offices and meeting rooms for the football Falcons. The Sebo Athletic Center is part of $57 million in new or renovated athletics facilities completed during Christopher’s tenure. That facilities list includes the new Keefe Tennis Complex, a renovation to Whittaker Track, improvements at baseball’s Steller Field, the FieldTurf inside Perry Stadium, renovations to the BGSU Ice Arena, and the new $36 million Stroh Center. Incremental facility improvement plans are also underway for other BGSU athletics venues. Athletic achievements of Christopher’s five years include nine conference banners. Highlights include the remarkable run of women’s basketball. The women’s hoops Falcons became the first team in conference history to advance to the ‘Sweet 16’ of the NCAA in 2006-07, winning a MAC record 31 games along the way. Curt Miller’s team made its fifth trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, following the Falcons’ seventh straight conference title. In Christopher’s tenure, football has played in two post-season bowl games, including the 2008 GMAC Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and the 2009 Roady’s Humanitarian Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The 2007 football team also shared the MAC East Division title. In 2008-09, the men’s basketball team won its first regular season MAC title in decade, advancing the NIT post-season tournament. And baseball won three consecutive MAC East Division titles, including overall conference regular season championships in 2008 and 2009. In the classroom, the Falcons have flourished, as the number of studentathletes with a GPA of 3.0 or above has increased in each of the last four years. In 2010-11, BGSU student-athletes set a new bar for cumulative GPA record, charting a 3.08 mark, and 196 BG student-athletes had a GPA of at least 3.0. The student-athlete graduation rate is greater than the overall student body’s graduation rate. Christopher implemented the Falcon Leadership Academy, a leadership development program for BGSU student-athletes. Christopher, along with several other administrators in the athletics department, serves as an instructor for the class, which represents each of the department’s 18 varsity sports. Christopher’s background in fundraising and development has been evident in his first five years at BGSU. There have been double-digit percentage increases in the external funding areas, including development, corporate marketing,

44

licensing and concessions. Christopher has furthered the department’s logo transition and integrated an external communications plan. Christopher came to BGSU after spending nearly a decade at Purdue University in his hometown. He served as Associate A.D. for External Relations and John Purdue Club Director at Purdue University. Christopher, who had been at the school since 1997, was a member of the department’s senior staff. He was accountable for external and revenue-related areas for Purdue’s $50 million department. In his role, he oversaw several areas, including development, marketing, promotions and advertising, athletic licensing and sports information. Under his leadership, Purdue raised $17.2 million in total giving for Athletics in his final year there. He also played a significant role in a seven-year campuswide capital campaign which raised $111 million for Athletics during that period. Projects that came to fruition in that time frame include tripling the number of endowed athletic scholarships and several facility additions or renovations. Among the facility projects were an indoor golf training center, football stadium renovation, aquatic center, indoor tennis center, and basketball video board campaign. He also was the advisor for Purdue’s chapter of Athletes-in-Action, and served a period of time as the sport administrator for Purdue’s men’s and women’s tennis programs. Christopher served as Executive Director for the Society of Professional Journalists in Greencastle, Ind., from 1994 to 1997 after joining the organization in 1991 as its Marketing and Development Director. During that time, he managed a staff of 15 for the nation’s largest not-for-profit journalism organization. His tenure focused largely on external relations, fueling growth that doubled the net worth of the foundation and association. He also improved relations with SPJ’s 250 local chapters and negotiated contracts and corporate partnerships. Prior to joining SPJ, Christopher was an Account Executive at WWWV-FM in Charlottesville, Va., from 1988-90. In that capacity, he designed and managed station promotions, including partnerships with the athletics program at the University of Virginia. He also was part of the “Page Program” at NBC in New York in 1988 where he served as a research analyst, assisting the Manager of Sports Programming and Market Analysis in research of television sports. Christopher also produced network sports tracking reports and surveys of major league sports. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from MAC-member Miami University in 1988 and earned his MBA from the institution in 1991. He played football for one season before the former linebacker’s career was cut short due to injury. In 1987-88 and 1990-91, Christopher was involved as a television color commentator in football and play-by-play voice for men’s ice hockey which aired on regional cable television and WPTD-TV in Dayton. He also served as a graduate assistant in the Office of Admissions at Miami in 199091. Christopher is a member of the Mid-American Conference’s External Relations Committee, current Chair of the CCHA Council, and is the women’s basketball administrative chair for the MAC. In the spring of 2008, he was appointed to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee. Christopher is active in Northwest Ohio with the Bowling Green Community Foundation, the American Red Cross and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Christopher, 45, is married to the former Tina Smith of Leetonia, Ohio. The couple has a son, Zachary, 15, and two daughters, Megan and Allison, ages 13 and 11.
