2015-16 Falcon Club Membership Guide (Full)

W ha t i s t h e F a l c on C lub? The mission of the Falcon Club, the fundraising arm of the BGSU Athletics Department, is to cover the annual cost of student-athlete scholarships through private, philanthropic support. When you invest in the Falcon Club, you ensure the ongoing success and continued tradition of excellence for Falcon Athletics. Your gifts are imperative in allowing us to provide the resources necessary for 425 student-athletes to have a truly world-class experience.

Unlike a restricted, sport-specific gift, every unrestricted membership gift the Falcon Club receives goes directly to fund and enhance scholarship support for all 18 of our athletic programs.

Contributions to the Falcon Club have one general and over-arching purpose: providing our student-athletes with the NCAA allotted amount of scholarship support in every sport we sponsor. This allows BGSU to fully recruit, retain, and field as many scholarship student-athletes as allowed by the NCAA.

Our need is great, but our desire to provide the best possible experience for these student-athletes is greater. The time to take Falcon Athletics to the next level is now, and with your generous support, we can take that next step.

Gifts to the Falcon Club help support our student-athletes’ dreams and aspirations in the classroom, on the field and in the game of life. In general, an unrestricted gift to the Falcon Club will directly impact the lives of these student-athletes.

In the last two full fiscal years, private gifts to Falcon Athletics rose from $2.4 to $2.6 million. Unfortunately, the cost of scholarships alone has risen from $5.5 million just five years ago to a projected $7.1 million in the coming year.

We are proud to recognize that Falcons across the country are accepting this membership challenge in record numbers. But there is still much ground to cover on our way to our ultimate goal of being the most-supported school in the MAC.

Ac a d e m i c / P e r s o nal S uccesses 2014 was another outstanding year for Bowling Green student-athletes. BGSU’s 425 student-athletes had a collective average GPA of 3.169, exceeding the 2.99 mark set by the general student body at BGSU. Also, 2013-2014 was the 10th consecutive year the student-athlete GPA has exceeded that of the overall student body. The Graduation Success Rate of the 18 BGSU athletic programs improved to 83 percent, with four teams posting perfect 100 percent rates (Hockey, Women’s Golf, Tennis and Volleyball). Additionally, three programs had perfect APR scores of 1,000 (Tennis, Women’s Golf and Men’s Cross Country). Lastly, 244 of the 425 student-athletes (nearly 60 percent) had a GPA of 3.0 or greater, an increase of 12 student-athletes from the year before and 34 studentathletes from two years prior. There were 31 student-athletes who posted a perfect 4.0 GPA as well. Not only do BGSU student-athletes excel in the classroom, they also have many opportunities to be a part of the Bowling Green community and volunteer their time.

Among the service activities BGSU student-athletes participate in: • NW Ohio Special Olympics •

Dance Marathon — Each year, many student-athletes participate in BGSU Dance Marathon, which benefits the Children’s Miracle Network.

Falcons Fighting Hunger — In this year’s annual food drive, coordinated by SAAC along with the help of the BGSU Athletics department, our studentathletes and the Bowling Green community together raised $914 and collected 352 cans of nonperishable food items, which were given to the BG Christian Food Pantry.

Trick or Treat at the Stroh Center — Every Halloween, student-athletes dress up and hand out candy to children from the BGSU community! This is a great way for our student-athletes to interact with the community and have some fun!

Total Service Hours — Since August, our student-athletes have completed over 1,000 hours of community service, truly making a difference in Bowling Green.

The Case for Unrestricted Falcon Club Membership Gifts

1 2 3 4

As more Falcon Club member contributions have been allocated to individual sport programs, unrestricted Falcon Club gifts contributed to the department have not kept pace with the rising costs of scholarships. Our greatest current need is for unrestricted contributions to the Falcon Club, which will allow us to fully fund all sports at the maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA. New NCAA legislation allowing us to provide our student-athletes with the true cost of attending BGSU will further increase our grant-in-aid budget to more than $7 million. Until all 18 sports at BGSU are fully funded at the NCAA’s allowable scholarship limits, ALL of our programs will have critical funds diverted towards this goal.

How Can You Help? We ask that you make an annual membership gift to the Falcon Club Student-Athlete Support Fund, of which every dollar goes to cover the annual cost of FULLY FUNDING all 18 intercollegiate sport programs that are sponsored by BGSU Athletics. The funding model that will allow us to begin to fully fund all 18 sports requires a significant increase in unrestricted gifts to the Falcon Club, as opposed to sport-specific gifts that can be used for other individual sport priorities, outside of OUR #1 priority:

student-athlete scholarships.

6

Discount to Falcon Club Special Events The Falcon Club hosts fundraisers and “friend-raisers” at home events, at road games and around the state annually. For most of these events, Falcon Club members displaying their annual membership wristband will receive a discount on entry fees, or discounted food or beverages. These discounts can accumulate and make it actually PAY to be a Falcon Club member! Falcon Club Window Cling Proudly display your membership in the Falcon Club with a 4” x 4” static window cling, which is perfect for car windows or a display in your business window. The window cling is an annual membership recognition declaring that you are a “2015-16 Member.”

Game Program Recognition The Falcon Club lists lifetime donor achievements, as well as elite level annual donors, on the donor rolls inside the home football game programs. This honor is reserved for members at our most elite levels, and serves as a special acknowledgement of their support.

RollAlong! Magazine Subscription RollAlong! magazine covers news and stories of interest to Bowling Green State University faculty, staff, students and alumni. It fosters a sense of connection to BGSU Athletics by profiling the teams, coaches and student-athletes who compete for the Falcons, as well as the Falcon Club members who make up the “team behind the teams.” All Falcon Club members will receive a complimentary copy of RollAlong! twice per year. Tax Deduction All gifts to the Falcon Club are taxdeductible as allowed by federal income tax law. The IRS allows an 80 percent charitable deduction for a contribution to educational institutions where, as a result of such contributions, the donor receives preferred seating rights for athletic events. You may also check the appropriate box on the gift card to decline all benefits associated with your annual membership gift. Donors should always consult their tax advisor. All gifts are acknowledged in writing by the Falcon Club, and receipted within 10 business days by the BGSU Foundation. Falcon Club Website Recognition The Falcon Club is proud to recognize its most loyal supporters with a page on the BGSU Athletics website dedicated to member recognition.

Champions Circle & All American Society Receptions & On-Field Recognition Our most powerful recognition opportunity is an on-field or on-court presentation for our most committed annual members, the annual members of our Champions Circle & All American Society. Champions Circle members provide annual scholarship gifts equivalent to the annual cost of tuition for one student-athlete. All American Society members make the ultimate annual commitment, contributing the full cost of a scholarship for a student-athlete. Recognition for these two prestigious groups is provided at BGSU Football and Men’s & Women’s Basketball events. Bowl Game and Postseason Ticket Priority The opportunity to purchase postseason tickets is offered first to Falcon Club members. From time to time, the Athletic Ticket Office will mail or email postseason ticket offers. After the demand for postseason contests has been determined, a distribution plan will be implemented based on Falcon Club membership. BGSU is committed to providing every possible opportunity for Falcon fans to attend postseason contests. Every effort will be made to acquire as many tickets as possible to satisfy the demand of Falcon fans. At times, however, the supply of tickets will be extremely limited, and the Falcon Club membership will be utilized to determine how tickets will be allocated.

At h l e t i c S u c c e s ses Not only have the last couple of years been noteworthy for our student-athletes in the classroom, it has also been a successful run for our student-athletes athletically. In 2013-14, BGSU won two Mid-American Conference Team Championships (Football and Women’s Basketball) and three individual MAC crowns. Additionally, BGSU had 48 MAC Player of the Week award winners, 39 All-MAC award winners, and nine MAC ScholarAthlete of the Week award winners. Also, Track and Field’s Brooke Pleger was named a first-team All-American, Tennis’ Nikki Chiricosta was named the league’s Player of the Year, and Gymnastics’ Lauren Feely and Men’s Golf team member Brett Rinker were named MAC Freshman of the Year winners in their respective sports. Following on that successful run, in the fall of 2014 the Falcon Football team finished the season with eight wins, winning the MAC East Division for the second consecutive season, and notching at least eight wins for the third consecutive season. BGSU made its second straight appearance in the MAC Championship Game and third straight appearance in a bowl game. By defeating South Alabama in the inaugural Raycom Media Camellia Bowl, the Orange and Brown won its first bowl game since the 2004 season. Men’s Soccer was another bright spot in the fall of 2014, tallying 14 wins as the team advanced to the championship match of the MAC Tournament for the first time since 2003. No BGSU team had won as many as 14 matches since 1997, and the Falcons more than doubled their win total from the previous year. The winter sports season saw Ice Hockey nationally ranked for the majority of the season, and for the fifth consecutive year, the team improved its win total over the previous season. The Swimming and Diving team finished third at the Mid-American Conference Championships, and increased its point total, despite competing without any divers, for the third consecutive season. Men’s Basketball also made great strides, posting the most overall wins and MAC wins since 2001-02, while finishing one game shy of a MAC East Championship. The signs are pointing in a very good direction across the intercollegiate sports programs sponsored by BGSU. Now is the time to Invest in Success!

Freq u e n t l y A s k e d Q uestions Who can join the Falcon Club? A: Anyone can join the Falcon Club. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan, someone who lives in the community, an alum, a parent, a coach, etc. We encourage anyone who cares about Bowling Green State University to join the Falcon Club. When I join the Falcon Club, where does my money go? A: Unrestricted gifts to the Falcon Club Student-Athlete Support Fund (#300399) will be directed annually to fund the cost of student-athlete scholarships until that total is covered by private philanthropic support. This money will allow BGSU Athletics to provide a world-class experience for student-athletes in all 18 programs. Why is a larger Falcon Club membership such a big priority of the Athletics Department? A: It is important to the Bowling Green Athletics Department that we are innovative leaders in all that we do. With the national conversation now more than ever being centered around revenue, it’s important for us to do everything and anything we can to provide the best possible experience for our student-athletes. Our task is to grow the number of members within the Falcon Club and the number of dollars raised by the Falcon Club to enable our school to use other streams of revenue for projects, like facility renovations, travel budgets and larger recruiting budgets. Paying for our scholarship bill through our Falcon Club support will enable BGSU coaches to recruit the best possible student-athletes for Bowling Green in the years to come. Until BGSU closes the existing gap between the annual scholarship cost and Falcon

Club memberships, we will not be able to invest in world-class facilities at the level of our MAC, WCHA and national competition. Over time, that deficit widens the facilities gap between BGSU and its peers exponentially. Are Falcon Club contributions tax-deductible? A: 100 percent of the money not designated for priority seating is deductible and 80 percent of priority seating associated giving is tax deductible, per IRS Code Section 170(I). Because everyone’s tax situation varies, we recommend that donors consult a tax advisor on the deductibility of gifts to the Falcon Club. What’s my best option if I only want to support a specific team? A: The Falcon Club will always honor the donor’s intent when accepting a gift; however, gifts that are restricted to a specific sport program assist ONLY that program. Unrestricted membership gifts, on the other hand, benefit the student-athletes across all 18 BGSU programs, by supporting the cost of all of our student-athletes attending BGSU and ultimately by funding our greatest need: scholarships. Sportspecific gifts are used at the discretion of each individual program’s head coach. How does Bowling Green’s level of Falcon Club Membership compare to the rest of the MAC? A: In a survey conducted by the MAC development offices, BGSU was at the mid-point in the league with a little over 2,000 annual contributors, though ranking significantly behind league-leading Toledo, Akron, Western Michigan and Miami. Where the Falcons are currently lagging well behind is in dollars raised via annual memberships not associated with seat contributions.

11

Only Eastern Michigan reported fewer annual unrestricted dollars raised towards athletic scholarships than BGSU. This data shows that we have a great opportunity to make significant strides in support that would be reflected in the MAC standings! What payment options/plans are available to fulfill my annual Falcon Club pledge? A: Recurring bank transfers allow for a scheduled contribution directly from your savings or checking account.

Simply choose a start date for your pledge online at bgsufalcons.com/donate, and your ongoing payments can be continued indefinitely or on a finite schedule of payments. A minimum Falcon Club membership can be made more manageable in $10 monthly payments, or you may be able to budget an increase to your annual Falcon Club membership by paying in monthly installments. For more information, contact the Director of the Falcon Club at 419-372-3589.

How many student-athlete scholarships can be offered by Bowling Green every year? A: Per NCAA guidelines, BGSU can offer the following number of scholarships per sport annually. The number we currently offer is listed beside the potential number. Six Ways to Give

1

Annual Membership in the Falcon Club The annual giving program is the core of private support for BGSU athletics. A donor becomes a member of the Falcon Club with an annual contribution of $120 or more, or monthly contributions of $10 or more. Gifts can be made by cash, check, electronic funds transfer or credit card (Visa or MasterCard). Checks should be made payable to the BGSU Foundation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: All 2015 BGSU Football season ticket holders who have joined the Falcon Club or renewed their annual membership (minimum of $120) by June 30, 2015, will be guaranteed complimentary game day parking as a benefit of their membership. Parking passes will be tiered according to your annual membership level.

2

Matching Gifts Many companies will match their employees’ contributions to the Falcon Club. Ask your human resources office about your employer’s matching gift policy to multiply the effects of your contribution to the Falcons.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you plan on using your company’s matching gift toward your Falcon Club membership, your gift should be received by the Falcon Club before April 30. Many matching gifts require a significant period of time for processing, so please plan the timing of your gift so that the matching gift is received by BGSU Athletics prior to June 30.

3

Endowments An endowed scholarship provides a lasting stream of income because BGSU Athletics holds the gift in perpetuity, investing the principal and using a portion of the annual return to fund scholarship awards.

By endowing an athletic scholarship, you will create an enduring link between you and BGSU Athletics, and address the top priority for BGSU: to build the University’s scholarship endowment. There are many vehicles you might consider to establish an endowed athletic scholarship: • A cash gift or other current assets • An irrevocable deferred/planned gift • A bequest, also known as an Estate Gift Once you establish your endowed scholarship, you, your friends or family members can make additional gifts, thereby increasing the value and impact of your scholarship in future years.

4

14

Gift-In-Kind Businesses and organizations may make donations of products and services to the Falcon Club that offset expenses. If you provide products or services that provide relief from expenses that the Athletics Department incurs on an annual basis, your gifts can count towards your membership, and provide a tax benefit for you as well.

5

Planned Gifts A planned gift can offer you substantial tax and estate planning benefits and allow you to make a larger and more lasting gift to Bowling Green State University. It can be a gift that BGSU Athletics receives now or in the future, and it is also a way you can be a key supporter while meeting your own financial goals. Planned gifts to Falcon Athletics can be made through charitable trusts, gift annuities, bequests and numerous other tax-wise tools.

Capital Gifts Top-notch facilities are not just important for recruiting the finest possible student- athletes to BGSU, but they are also necessary to fulfill our commitment to current student-athletes to provide them with the best possible tools towards their pursuit of their academic and athletic goals. Capital gifts address the facility needs of the entire athletics program and allow BGSU to obtain a competitive advantage.

- Chris Kingston, Director of Athletics

BOWLING GREEN STATE UNIVERSITY Department of Intercollegiate Athletics

I nvest in Falcon Succes s Intercollegiate Athletics at Bowling Green State University has a long and storied history. With one individual and two team national championships, as well as multiple Olympic gold medalists, Falcon Athletics has established itself on the national level. Of note, BGSU Athletics just celebrated the 50th anniversaries of both the Falcon Club and the Athletics Hall of Fame. Our student-athletes at BGSU also perform incredibly well in the classroom. Just last academic year, Falcon student-athletes achieved the best fall, spring and cumulative grade point averages in recent history. Additionally, 13 of the department’s 18 teams posted their best Academic Progress Rate (APR) score since the rating system began for the 2004-05 academic year. Now is the time to honor our impressive past by investing in our future. The three main areas where private giving can help augment BGSU’s institutional commitment to athletics are through Scholarships, Facilities and Named Coaching and Staff positions. Continued support of our 18 intercollegiate athletics teams will help ensure the future success of our graduates in society. Through your support of the Falcon Club, we can continue to build something special at Bowling Green State University. We cannot get there as quickly as all of us would like with inadequate facilities, subpar strength and conditioning and nutrition programs, or a membership base that is not comparable to our rivals in the MAC. We encourage you to “Invest in Success” by becoming a member of the Falcon Club, increasing your membership level or renewing your membership for 2015-16 now. We want you to know that we truly appreciate your continued, or increased, support and we look forward to seeing — and hearing — you in Bowling Green supporting our student-athletes in the upcoming year.
