THE

BGSU MAINTAINS ITS HOM

• The Falcon basketball and volleyball teams moved into a new home in time for the 2011-12 season, as the Stroh Center opened in the summer of 2011. • The first athletic event in the venue saw a crowd of nearly 3,000 watch the Falcon volleyball team post an impressive victory over Michigan State in September of 2011. • The $36 million venue was made possible by $14 million of private donations, including an $8 million donation from Kermit and Mary Lu Stroh of Wapakoneta, Ohio – the largest single private gift in BGSU history. • The ‘front door’ to campus also features the largest Falcon statue in the world. Charlotte, N.C., philanthropist Irwin Belk donated $100,000 to cast and build the bronze Falcon statue. • The women’s basketball team posted a 44-8 record in the first three seasons in the new building, including a 24-2 mark against Mid-American Conference foes in regular-season and league tourney play in that time. BG went a perfect 9-0 vs. MAC opponents and won a school-record 16 total home games in 2013-14.

ME-COURT ADVANTAGE IN A STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY

BGSU FALCONS • 2020-21 WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

THE • The state-of-the-art arena has hosted numerous concerts, and is also used for commencements, convocations, orientation and student activities. • Then-President Barack Obama spoke at the Stroh Center in September of 2012, and the venue has also seen performers such as comedian Jim Gaffigan and musical artists Florida Georgia Line and Cobra Starship, among others, perform there. • The Stroh Center has hosted numerous Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional & district boys and girls basketball games, along with OSHAA volleyball and wrestling events in its first nine seasons. • The ‘Stroh Center Rap’, a video created for the Stroh Center dedication ceremony on Sept. 9, 2011, featured the talents of BGSU students Mikey ‘Rosco’ Blair and Rachel Willingham, along with Kermit Stroh and fellow donors Larry Miles, Bill Frack and Allen Schmidthorst. Several student-athletes, including women’s basketball standouts Jessica Slagle and Alexis Rogers, also participated in the project. The video, which was featured nationally in a variety of places, including ESPN.com, has been viewed over 225,000 times.

E STROH CENTER

A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES IN JUST A FEW SHORT YEARS

• Even before the Stroh Center was complete, the NCAA accepted BGSU’s bid to host the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championships. Baylor began its title run at the Stroh, winning a pair of games in BG en route to becoming the first men’s or women’s basketball team ever to go 40-0. • Baylor junior Brittney Griner, the National Player of the Year, became just the second women’s player to dunk in an NCAA Tournament game, slamming one home in traffic in the team’s second-round win over Florida. All three tournament games held in the Stroh Center were sellouts. In addition to Baylor & Florida, Ohio State & UC Santa Barbara rounded out the field.
