2011 Outlook Bowling Green, Ohio – Coming off of an 8-24 season in 2010, expectations for the Bowling Green volleyball team may not be high to those outside of the program. The Falcons, however, won’t let that outlook affect a special season in the program’s history. The 2011 season marks a convergence of eras as head coach Denise Van De Walle has announced that this will be the last of her 29 seasons leading the Bowling Green program. She is the winningest volleyball coach in Mid-American Conference history with more the 500 career victories. “Being the head coach of Bowling Green volleyball has been so much of my life,” Van De Walle said. “Saying goodbye will be very emotional for me. I absolutely love this team and I want to savor every minute of this final season because it will be over in the blink of an eye.” On top of that, the Bowling Green volleyball team opens the immaculate Stroh Center in 2011, hosting Michigan State on Sept. 9 to make the first athletic event in the building. A young, but experienced, team will look to make the on-court product in 2011 much better than many anticipate. “The Stroh Center is awesome,” Van De Walle said. “It’s a much-needed resource for volleyball and to be the first athletic event in the Stroh is something really special.” An improved season will start with a large sophomore class that got plenty of experience as freshmen a year ago. Paige Penrod and Danielle Tonyan became the first freshman duo in school history to each record 300 kills. Libero Ashley Dunn, setter Laura Avila, and outside hitter Lindsay Butterfield were all regular contributors in their first seasons. Two more sophomores, Libby Dachenhaus and Kaitlynn Skinner, have made big strides since the end of the 2010 campaign and could help out as well. That sophomore class is joined by a pair of seniors, Emily Kauth and Madison Nitta, who will lead the team and look to close out their careers with a successful season. Juniors Kari Galen, Lauren Mizgalski, and Cassie Berning provide a lot of firepower and defense at the net. Two newcomers, junior college transfer Leah Shaw and versatile freshman setter Erica Fullenkamp, have potential to produce right away as well. SETTER Sophomore Laura Avila returns after starting 17 times a year ago and playing in all 111 sets. She took over a starting role midway through the year and, along with her setting, was able to finish third on the team with 198 digs. Freshman Erica Fullenkamp comes to Bowling Green as the first high school commit in school history to record 1,000 assists and 1,000 kills during her prep career. She was a two-time first team All-Ohio award winner and has the versatility to contribute immediately. “Both of our setters are playing really well right now,” Van De Walle said. “Laura is the type of player coaches want on the floor as she is a natural born leader and her defense and hustle are outstanding. Erica is a gifted athlete who has good size and is good in the air. She does a great job saving tight passes.”

MIDDLE HITTER Four players will battle to contribute in the middle with senior Emily Kauth, junior Kari Galen, junior college transfer Leah Shaw, and sophomore Kaitlynn Skinner. As a senior, Kauth will carry a big load and Galen comes off of a much-improved sophomore season in which she started 24 times and averaged a team-best 0.78 blocks per set. “Emily is playing her best volleyball this preseason,” Van De Walle said. “She is hitting the ball extremely well and we’re counting on her to score more points this year. Kari’s speed in the middle will certainly help us blocking-wise and she has really gained a lot of confidence during the spring and summer.” Skinner played in just four matches last year but had a strong spring and is a natural blocker. Shaw has good size and has two years of collegiate experience, which is something this team lacks with such a large sophomore class. “Kaitlynn’s hitting right now is as good as I’ve seen,” Van De Walle said. “She will compete for a spot in the middle. Leah is a gifted athlete who should help us at both the left and middle. I’m looking forward to seeing her compete for a starting spot.” LEFT SIDE The left side may be the strength of this team with sophomores Paige Penrod and Lindsay Butterfield, along with junior Cassie Berning and Shaw. Penrod was the only player to start all 32 matches a year ago and she ranked fourth in the Mid-American Conference with 405 kills, easily the most by a freshman in program history. Butterfield developed as the season wore on and had at least ten kills in five of the final 12 matches a year ago. Berning is a player who has battled injuries throughout her career but has potential, while Shaw will find time at this position when she is not in the middle. “Paige carried a big load for us last year and I don’t see that changing,” Van De Walle said. “She is a strong, dynamic left side who can take over a match. Lindsay just keeps getting better and better. She’s hitting the ball harder than last year and she’s one of those players who gives it all she has every time she plays. Cassie adds another dimension for us at left side because she is a six-rotation player, but we haven’t gotten a chance yet to see what she can do.” RIGHT SIDE Sophomore Danielle Tonyan and redshirt junior Lauren Mizgalski are strong, physical right side hitters. Tonyan was just the fifth freshman in program history to finish with at least 300 kills, started 27 times, and had at least ten kills in 17 different matches. Mizgalski is another player who has been hampered by injuries during her career but has shown potential when she has been able to get on the court. “Danielle is one of the hardest hitters I have ever coached,” Van De Walle said. “We’re continuing to work on her shot selection but she is fun to watch and we expect big things from her. Lauren made great strides last spring at the net. She has always been a pretty good blocker but now her hitting has caught up. She is playing with more confidence and she wants to be on the floor.”

2011 Outlook 2011 SCHEDULE

SETTING ACADEMIC STANDARDS Nine of the returning volleyball players have cumulative GPA’s at least a 3.00 or higher. • Laura Avila • Kari Galen • Cassie Berning • Emily Kauth • Lindsey Butterfield • Paige Penrod • Libby Dachenhaus • Kaitlyn Skinner • Ashley Dunn Additionally, five of those student-athletes have GPA’s higher than 3.5 -- Laura Avila (4.0), Lindsey Butterfield (4.0), Libby Dachenhaus (3.7), Kari Galen (3.6), and Kaitlyn Skinner (3.8). The Orange and Brown have also taken home the Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic Award 12 times, including the last 11 seasons, which is the second longest streak in Division I volleyball. DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST/LIBERO Senior Madison Nitta and sophomores Ashley Dunn and Libby Dachenhaus will handle the libero and defensive specialist duties. Nitta has found more court time as her career has progressed and is one of the better servers on the team. She had the opportunity to play with the US Deaf team during the summer and contributed to a squad that won the 2011 Friendship Games, defeating a Ukraine team that had not lost an international match in six years. Dunn is the incumbent starter at libero and her 457 digs were the eighth-best single season total in program history. Dachenhaus was slowed last year by the recovery of a torn ACL. “We need Ashley to do big things for us in the back row,” Van De Walle said. “Her ball control will be very important to our offensive efforts. Madison is playing the best volleyball of her career right now. Her play with the US Deaf team this summer is very apparent. She is playing like a senior. This spring we used Libby as a setter and she was quite impressive. She’s a very hard worker and will compete for a spot in the back row.”

The longest tenured coach at Bowling Green announced on April 21 that she will retire following the program’s first year in the Stroh Center. She is the winningest coach in Mid-American Conference history with a mark of 508-366 in 28 seasons. > THE VAN DE WALLE FILE <

On Nov. 17, 2009, Van De Walle reached an impressive milestone, posting her 500th career victory with a win over rival Toledo in the MAC Tournament. She has built a program that has ranked as one of the best in both the MAC and the Midwest during her career. Ranking among the 30 winningest active coaches in Division I, she has led the Orange and Brown to a winning season in 18 of the last 24 years. She has 13 seasons with 20-plus wins and a 30-win campaign in 1992. On four occasions Van De Walle has been voted the MAC Coach of the Year, receiving outright honors in 1986 and 1989. She shared the award in both 1987 and 1992. Van De Walle had the youngest team in her career in 2010 and the program took some lumps, finishing with a record of 8-24 overall. Despite the record, the team did have some individual success, particularly from a freshman class that has the talent to reverse that record in short order. Paige Penrod set the program’s freshman record for kills and she paired up with Danielle Tonyan to be the first freshman duo in school history to each record 300 kills. As well, freshman Ashley Dunn had one of the top 10 dig seasons in school history and another rookie, Laura Avila, led the team in assists at the setter position. Lindsey Butterfield, yet another freshman, also gained plenty of experience and could be primed for a big sophomore campaign.

Finishing just 13-20 during the 2009 season, the team may not have had the most impressive record in Van De Walle’s tenure, but she did arguably the best coaching job of her career. The Falcons lost their first six MAC matches and had a stretch of 11 consecutive losses at one point, but Van De Walle never allowed her team to give in. BGSU rebounded in a big way, going 5-5 in league play down the stretch, including wins over two teams that had defeated the Falcons earlier in the year. When the dust settled on the regular season, Van De Walle sat at 499 career wins and the team earned just a No. 11 seed for the MAC Tournament, forcing the Falcons to go on the road to face rival Toledo, another team that had beaten them earlier in the year, in the first round. In an epic fiveset struggle, Bowling Green avenged the earlier defeat with a 26-24, 25-22, 20-25, 16-25, 15-12 win that gave Van De Walle her 500th career victory. Prior to 2009, the program had posted three consecutive 20-win seasons and a 37-11 MAC record during that stretch. The 2008 team went 25-9 overall and 12-4 in league play, winning championships in the Temple Invitational and the Marquette Challenge. The 2007 team went 21-10 and the 2006 squad finished 266, which included a 17-match winning streak and a trip to the MAC championship match. The team went 13-3 in conference play in 2006, the most wins for the program in MAC play since 1993, and followed that up with a 12-4 record in 2007. Van De Walle, whose tenure is the longest of any current head coach at Bowling Green, became just the third coach in the history of BGSU volleyball on June 30, 1983, and has experience coaching at the high school, college, national, and international levels.

In May of 2001, Van De Walle was named President of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has been very active in the AVCA during her Falcon tenure. In the fall of 2002, Van De Walle became the first coach to amass 350 career wins at a MAC school, reaching that plateau in a win over Marshall. In 2005, she picked up win number 400 with a 3-0 sweep over Chicago State. From 1999-01, Van De Walle led the team to three consecutive 20-win seasons, just the second time in school history – both under Van De Walle – that BGSU teams have accomplished that feat. The 1999 team went 21-12 and was the most improved team in the MAC, winning 10 more matches than the 1998 team’s 11-21 mark. The Falcons tripled their conference win total by going 12-6 and advancing to the tournament semifinals. Following that 1999 season, BGSU lost a strong senior class and was picked to finish fourth in the East Division. But the Falcons proceeded to go 21-9 and tie for the division title. The 2001 squad finished 21-8 and finished 12-6 in MAC play for the third straight year, finishing first in the division again. Van De Walle’s most successful stretch came from 1989-93 when she guided the Orange and Brown to five straight years of 20 or more wins. The team finished first in the MAC in 1989, 1991 and 1992 and was second in 1993. The 1989 team won the program’s initial MAC title, halting Western Michigan’s 98-match league winning streak and seven-year reign as league champion in the process. The team finished with a perfect 8-0 league mark, the only undefeated MAC season in program history. The 1990 team went 26-7 overall but that was only the start.

Head Coach Denise Van De Walle BGSU went 59-13 over the next two seasons and 32-2 in MAC play, winning back-to-back conference titles. The 1991 team made the program’s first NCAA appearance and the Falcons finished the year ranked No. 19 in the country. The 1992 team set a school record for victories in a season by going 30-8 and the Falcons capped a spectacular fall campaign by finishing with a runner-up finish at the National Invitational Volleyball Championship – the highest ever by a MAC member. The 1993 team again advanced to the NIVC and finished third in its pool to go 20-11 overall. The Falcons finished second in the MAC in both regular season and tournament action. For all of the team’s on-court achievements, Van De Walle’s squads have perennially been one of the top teams off the court as well. She has had numerous regional Academic All-Americans, including Emily Manser, who was a member of the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American team in 2004 and 2005. BGSU volleyball is a ten-time recipient of the AVCA/Game Plan National Academic Award, including one season with the highest GPA in the nation. Van De Walle’s volleyball squads have recorded the highest team GPA on campus in six of the last 11 years. Over the last 15 years, the Falcons have graduated 49 players from the volleyball program. No fewer than 39 of those players had a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better. While her Falcon teams have had plenty of success, Van De Walle has also excelled at other places. A 1976 graduate of Ball State, Van De Walle began her coaching career at Northside High School in Muncie, Ind., where she led her team to an overall record of 54-9 during the 1977 and 1978 seasons. Her 1977 squad posted an impressive 29-1 record en route to the state championship while her 1978

6

team produced a 25-8 slate that included sectional and regional titles. For her efforts, Van De Walle was named Coach of the Year by the Indiana High School Athletic Association following the 1978 campaign. She then became a graduate assistant at her alma mater in 1979, coaching the junior varsity team while assisting with the varsity. In 1980, Van De Walle returned to Northside and guided the team to a sectional championship and a 25-3 record. That year, she also coached the Michiana Volleyball Club that participated in the United States Volleyball Association Junior Nationals in California and the Junior Olympics in Illinois. In 1981, Van De Walle joined the program at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo as an assistant coach and helped the Mustangs to a 41-8 record and a fifth-place finish in the NCAA Division I Championships. She went back to Ball State in 1982 as the assistant coach, and the Cardinals finished third in the MAC with a 33-12 overall record. Following that season she came to BGSU to begin her storied Falcon tenure. During the summer of 1983, Van De Walle was an assistant coach with the Athletes in Action volleyball team that toured the Far East with stops in Hong Kong, Japan, and China. She assisted the overall tour preparation in the areas of cultural, spiritual, and physical conditioning. She again accompanied the AIA team to the Far East in 1984, this time serving as head coach, returning home with a mark of 9-4.

Head Coach Denise Van De Walle National Women’s Volleyball Team at the North America, Central America, and Canada (NORCECA) World Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, but, unfortunately, the U.S. could not participate. However, she was in charge of running the USVBA women’s senior elite camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she organized scrimmages between the senior groups and the junior national unit she was to have coached. Van De Walle also assisted women’s national team head coach Terry Liskevych in selecting the participants to the camp. BGSU’s Carey Amos participated in this camp. In 1995 and 1996, Van De Walle was named the head coach of the AIA volleyball teams which toured Bolivia and South Africa, respectively. ROMMECK COMPETES WITH NATIONAL TRAINING TEAM When the Falcons’ 2001 volleyball season came to an end that November, one Falcon team member’s season was far from finished. Caty Rommeck was selected to the USA Women’s National Training Team, and headed to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in January of 2002. The team consisted of 12 players picked from a tryout held in San Diego, Calif., after the Final Four in mid-December, 2001. Players vying to make the team included members of the last U.S. National Team as well as U.S. Professional Volleyball. “I am thrilled for Caty to have this opportunity,” said BGSU head coach Denise Van De Walle at the time of Rommeck’s selection. “To train at the Olympic Training Center with Toshi (coach Toshiaka Yoshida) and the other players selected is a chance of a lifetime.” In 2001, her senior season, Rommeck earned All-MAC First-Team honors for the second consecutive year, and also was named to the All-Mideast Region Team. She became just the fourth Falcon player to earn all-region honors in the history of the program, and the first in a decade. Rommeck’s name can be found throughout the BGSU record lists. Rommeck capped off her successful three-year career at BGSU by leading the Falcons to a third consecutive 21-win season. She led the MAC by a wide margin in kills per game and was second in the league in blocks per game.

FALCONS AT THE U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL Being selected to play in any national or international competition is certainly a goal of many collegiate athletes. BG’s Tammy Schiller realized that goal in the summer of 1990 when she participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis, and again in 1991 when she competed in the games in Los Angeles. The middle hitter assisted the South team to a 3-1 record en route to the 1991 gold medal. She played in all four of her team’s matches. In nine games, Schiller registered 14 kills for a hitting percentage of .297. She also recorded 19 digs and nine blocks. Schiller had a strong outing in the gold-medal match against the West in which the South came back to win 5-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-8. The only team to defeat Schiller’s South squad was BG head coach Denise Van De Walle’s bronzemedal winning East unit, which came away with a thrilling 15-11, 9-15, 10-15, 16-14, 1510 victory. Van De Walle, who was selected to coach the U.S. Junior National Women’s Team at the NORCECA World Championships in 1992, also coached the West at the USOF in 1993. Her squad was the only team to defeat the eventual gold-medal winners that year as well. Schiller struck silver in 1990 as a member of the West where she led her team with a .298 attack percentage, collecting 23 kills in four matches. The West team went undefeated in pool play, but lost to the North in four games in the gold-medal match. With Schiller’s selection to compete in the Festival in 1990, she became only the second BG volleyball player to earn a spot on a Festival roster. That same year, Schiller and teammate Linda Popovich became the first BG players to earn All-Mideast honors. Popovich was the initial Falcon to compete in the Festival, earning the honor in 1987.

LINDA POPOVICH

Linda Popovich, one of the finest studentathletes to go through the University, capped a brilliant four-year career as a student in 1990 by earning the Walter Byers Scholarship, and as an athlete by being named the “Most Valuable Player” in the MAC. A 1995 BGSU Hall of Fame inductee, Popovich concluded her academic career at BG with a 3.95 GPA majoring in political science and economics. BGSU’s representative at numerous student symposiums and programs, she earned the Byers Award which is given annually to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. Byers Award candidates must have at least a 3.50 GPA, show evidence of superior character and leadership, and demonstrate that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on personal and intellectual development. In addition, Popovich, a setter, was a firstteam Academic All-American each of her last two years at BG. A third-team Academic All-American as a sophomore, Popovich was the first BG athlete to earn GTE national academic honors three times and was only the fourth from a MAC institution. She is the only female in conference history to earn first-team national academic honors twice and was a three-time MAC All-Academic pick. On the court, Popovich earned all-MAC laurels four times, league freshman-of-theyear accolades in 1986, and MAC Player-of-the-Year honors in 1989. She established league career records for assists (4,460 - 17th on the NCAA career list at the time) and digs (1,246) and left BG holding five additional school records. Her career assist and ace totals still stand as school marks. Popovich played in every game of every match during her four-year career. FALCONS IN THE HALL OF FAME

On July 21, 2006, former Falcon volleyball standouts Carlyn Esslinger and Megan McGuire joined an elite few when they were inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Esslinger, a twotime All-MAC first-teamer, joined Linda Popovich, Tammy Schiller and Lisa Mika as the fourth Falcon volleyball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. She holds the all-time record for most attack attempts and second most kills in Falcon history. After completing her basketball career, McGuire joined the Falcon volleyball squad and helped lead them to their first MAC title in 1989. Mika, a native of Flossmoor. Ill., was a four-time All-MAC selection from 1988-91. Mika is the Falcons’ all-time leader with 569 total blocks, including 156 solo rejections. She also finds herself ranked in the top five in four offensive categories. Popovich and Schiller, obviously, also had incredible success as BGSU student-athletes. Popovich capped her brilliant four-year career, both on and off the court, by earning the 1990 Walter Byers Scholarship. That award is given to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. In addition, she was the first BG athlete to earn GTE Academic All-America honors three times. On the court, she was the MAC’s Player of the Year as a senior. Schiller earned All-MAC first-team honors three times and twice was the league’s Player of the Year. She is the only Falcon volleyball player to amass such totals. Additionally, Schiller was the only first-team All-Mideast selection in school annals. She twice participated at the U.S. Olympic Festival, and – like Popovich – still ranks at or near the top of numerous Falcon record lists.
