The Stroh As one of the newest facilities
has provided BGSU with one of the best
h Center in Division I, the Stroh Center
t home-court advantages in the country
IMMEDIATE IMPACT * Won school-record 12 matches to start the year * Defeated previously unbeaten Michigan St. in first match in the Stroh Center * Won Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational for first time since 2007 * Posted 11 more wins than 2010 * Won six home matches for first time since 2008 * Average home attendance doubled over 2010
BGSU stunned previously unbeaten Michigan State in four sets in the first varsity athletics event ever held in the Stroh Center. The crowd of 2,961 was the largest to ever watch a Falcon home volleyball match.
HISTORY IS MADE Even before the Stroh Center was complete, the NCAA accepted Bowling Green’s bid to serve as a host for the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. Baylor, the first men’s or women’s basketball team to go 40-0, began its run through the tournament at the Stroh Center and National Player of the Year Brittney Griner became just the second women’s player to dunk in NCAA Tournament history, slamming one home in traffic in the opening round. All three tournament games held in the Stroh Center were sell-outs.
GOING VIRAL
The ‘Stroh Center Rap’, a video created for the Stroh Center dedication on Sept. 9, 2011, featured the talents of BGSU students Mikey “Rosco” Blair and Rachel Willingham, along with donors Kermit Stroh, Larry Miles, Bill Frack, and Allen Schmidhorst. The video was featured nationally in a variety of places, including ESPN.com, and has been viewed well over 150,000 times.

2012 OUTLOOK Coaching transitions aren’t supposed to go this smoothly. When Denise Van De Walle retired after 29 years as the head coach of the Bowling Green State University volleyball team, three-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year Danijela Tomic stepped into a situation that most new coaches can only wish for. With 12 returners, including five starters (and libero Ashley Dunn), back from a team that went 19-12 a year ago, the Falcons are positioned for more success in 2012.
Lauren Mizgalski, who has struggled with shoulder injuries during her career, will back up Tonyan. Although sophomore transfer Kelsey Bates is slotted to play middle, she would move to the right side if necessary.
“The unique thing about this team is that we have pretty much everyone back,” Tomic said. “For a new coach, that’s very beneficial when you inherit an eager and hard working group of players. We had a very productive spring semester where we implemented a new offensive and defensive system and worked a lot on improving our serve and serve receive. We’ll be a more mature team and a more balanced team.”
MIDDLES With four players at this position, Tomic has depth in the middle, which is a tremendous luxury. Senior Kari Galen was one of the top players in the MAC a year ago in attack percentage and was the team’s leading blocker. Senior Leah Shaw and junior Kaitlyn Skinner are considered two of the most improved players on the team, while Kelsey Bates, a sophomore transfer from Syracuse University, will push for time as well.
Eleven of the 13 players on the team are juniors and seniors, but much of the success of this team will be determined by a sevenperson junior class that could go down as one of the best classes in BGSU history. That group is spearheaded by returning first-team AllMAC right side Danielle Tonyan. Along with Tonyan, outside hitter Paige Penrod, setter Laura Avila, and Dunn all started from almost the moment they stepped foot on campus as freshmen. Lindsey Butterfield, Kaitlyn Skinner, and Libby Dachenhaus have continued to develop and are key members of the rotation as well. Some of them will likely step into starting roles also. “There’s usually big growth from the sophomore to the junior year,” Tomic said. “All across the board, our vertical jumps and strength have improved in the spring, but more importantly our volleyball skills and volleyball IQ have improved significantly.” SETTERS Incumbent starter Laura Avila and sophomore Erica Fullenkamp will fill the setter role. Avila has more experience at the position, but Fullenkamp spent a lot of time on the court as a freshman at a variety of positions. She spent the spring and summer focused solely as a setter. “Laura has great leadership skills and is well respected by her teammates,” Tomic said. “Her and Erica’s court personality and skills complement each other. We will create the system that fits our personnel and it will be interesting to see how their roles develop this year. Erica’s setting consistency and the tempo of her sets have been much better and she has been working a lot on her footwork and setting technique.” RIGHT SIDE Danielle Tonyan is a returning first-team All-MAC performer and ranked third in the league in kills a year ago (first in the East Division). Only one player in BGSU program history has recorded 300 kills in all four years of her career, but Tonyan (along with Paige Penrod also) has posted at least 300 in each of her first two seasons. “Danielle is going to have a really good year,” Tomic said. “She’s been working hard and is open to the changes that we have been implementing. She’s jumping higher, she’s hitting stronger, and her blocking and defense has improved. Our goal for Danielle is to make her a more complete player, a player who can play all six rotations. She has that potential and she is showing that to us now in the gym.”
“Lauren has improved in the spring, especially when it comes to her blocking,” Tomic said. “We want her to be a dominant blocker and also increase her hitting efficiency.”
“Kari had a strong junior year and we want her to build on that her senior year,” Tomic said. “Leah and Kaitlyn are definitely the most improved of the group. They had a huge spring and continued that into the summer. They are all working very hard and pushing each other in practice every day.” OUTSIDE HITTERS Junior Paige Penrod has the most kills, most aces, and second-most digs in the program over the past two years. She is a complete player who can take over a match in a variety of ways. Again, this year, she will be a focal point both offensively and defensively for the Falcons. “Paige is a very gifted athlete and she reads and knows the game very well,” Tomic said. “She is our best defender and her speed, reaction, and anticipation is very good. As a six rotation player, we expect a lot from her in serve receive, defense, and as a powerful hitter. Our main goal for her is to increase her hitting efficiency this season, while maintaining a strong defensive presence on the court.” Lindsey Butterfield and Cassie Berning are both showing strong improvement to push for time on the court. Both players have battled injuries at times during their careers, but are healthy and ready for 2012. “Lindsey has improved tremendously,” Tomic said. “People will be surprised by her improvement. She is more physical and has increased her vertical by four inches. Moreover, her arm swing has improved and she is just playing on a different level right now. I think she will have a breakthrough junior year. Cassie had a good spring without injuries and is more confident now. She has made improvements in her serve receive and defense which will make her a more complete outside hitter.” LIBERO Juniors Ashley Dunn and Libby Dachenhaus are competing for time as the libero. Dunn has played the role exclusively over the last two years and Dachenhaus has served as a defensive specialist. “Both of them are working hard,” Tomic said. “They both have the ability to do the job, but it’s still too early to say who’s going to be a libero and who’s going to be a defensive specialist.”

ROMMECK COMPETES WITH NATIONAL TRAINING TEAM When the Falcons’ 2001 volleyball season came to an end that November, one Falcon team member’s season was far from finished. Caty Rommeck was selected to the USA Women’s National Training Team, and headed to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in January of 2002. The team consisted of 12 players picked from a tryout held in San Diego, Calif., after the Final Four in mid-December, 2001. Players vying to make the team included members of the last U.S. National Team as well as U.S. Professional Volleyball. “I am thrilled for Caty to have this opportunity,” said BGSU head coach Denise Van De Walle at the time of Rommeck’s selection. “To train at the Olympic Training Center with Toshi (coach Toshiaka Yoshida) and the other players selected is a chance of a lifetime.” In 2001, her senior season, Rommeck earned All-MAC First-Team honors for the second consecutive year, and also was named to the All-Mideast Region Team. She became just the fourth Falcon player to earn all-region honors in the history of the program, and the first in a decade. Rommeck’s name can be found throughout the BGSU record lists. Rommeck capped off her successful three-year career at BGSU by leading the Falcons to a third consecutive 21-win season. She led the MAC by a wide margin in kills per game and was second in the league in blocks per game.

FALCONS AT THE U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL Being selected to play in any national or international competition is certainly a goal of many collegiate athletes. BG’s Tammy Schiller realized that goal in the summer of 1990 when she participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis, and again in 1991 when she competed in the games in Los Angeles. The middle hitter assisted the South team to a 3-1 record en route to the 1991 gold medal. She played in all four of her team’s matches. In nine games, Schiller registered 14 kills for a hitting percentage of .297. She also recorded 19 digs and nine blocks. Schiller had a strong outing in the gold-medal match against the West in which the South came back to win 5-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-8. The only team to defeat Schiller’s South squad was BG head coach Denise Van De Walle’s bronzemedal winning East unit, which came away with a thrilling 15-11, 9-15, 10-15, 16-14, 1510 victory. Van De Walle, who was selected to coach the U.S. Junior National Women’s Team at the NORCECA World Championships in 1992, also coached the West at the USOF in 1993. Her squad was the only team to defeat the eventual gold-medal winners that year as well. Schiller struck silver in 1990 as a member of the West where she led her team with a .298 attack percentage, collecting 23 kills in four matches. The West team went undefeated in pool play, but lost to the North in four games in the gold-medal match. With Schiller’s selection to compete in the Festival in 1990, she became only the second BG volleyball player to earn a spot on a Festival roster. That same year, Schiller and teammate Linda Popovich became the first BG players to earn All-Mideast honors. Popovich was the initial Falcon to compete in the Festival, earning the honor in 1987.

LINDA POPOVICH
Linda Popovich, one of the finest studentathletes to go through the University, capped a brilliant four-year career as a student in 1990 by earning the Walter Byers Scholarship, and as an athlete by being named the “Most Valuable Player” in the MAC. A 1995 BGSU Hall of Fame inductee, Popovich concluded her academic career at BG with a 3.95 GPA majoring in political science and economics. BGSU’s representative at numerous student symposiums and programs, she earned the Byers Award which is given annually to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. Byers Award candidates must have at least a 3.50 GPA, show evidence of superior character and leadership, and demonstrate that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on personal and intellectual development. In addition, Popovich, a setter, was a firstteam Academic All-American each of her last two years at BG. A third-team Academic All-American as a sophomore, Popovich was the first BG athlete to earn GTE national academic honors three times and was only the fourth from a MAC institution. She is the only female in conference history to earn first-team national academic honors twice and was a three-time MAC All-Academic pick. On the court, Popovich earned all-MAC laurels four times, league freshman-of-theyear accolades in 1986, and MAC Player-of-the-Year honors in 1989. She established league career records for assists (4,460 - 17th on the NCAA career list at the time) and digs (1,246) and left BG holding five additional school records. Her career assist and ace totals still stand as school marks. Popovich played in every game of every match during her four-year career. FALCONS IN THE HALL OF FAME
On July 21, 2006, former Falcon volleyball standouts Carlyn Esslinger and Megan McGuire joined an elite few when they were inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Esslinger, a twotime All-MAC first-teamer, joined Linda Popovich, Tammy Schiller and Lisa Mika as the fourth Falcon volleyball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. She holds the all-time record for most attack attempts and second most kills in Falcon history. After completing her basketball career, McGuire joined the Falcon volleyball squad and helped lead them to their first MAC title in 1989. Mika, a native of Flossmoor. Ill., was a four-time All-MAC selection from 1988-91. Mika is the Falcons’ all-time leader with 569 total blocks, including 156 solo rejections. She also finds herself ranked in the top five in four offensive categories. Popovich and Schiller, obviously, also had incredible success as BGSU student-athletes. Popovich capped her brilliant four-year career, both on and off the court, by earning the 1990 Walter Byers Scholarship. That award is given to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. In addition, she was the first BG athlete to earn GTE Academic All-America honors three times. On the court, she was the MAC’s Player of the Year as a senior. Schiller earned All-MAC first-team honors three times and twice was the league’s Player of the Year. She is the only Falcon volleyball player to amass such totals. Additionally, Schiller was the only first-team All-Mideast selection in school annals. She twice participated at the U.S. Olympic Festival, and – like Popovich – still ranks at or near the top of numerous Falcon record lists.
