The Stroh As one of the newest facilities
has provided BGSU with one of the best
h Center in Division I, the Stroh Center
t home-court advantages in the country
THE IMPACT * Won school-record 12 matches to start 2011 * Defeated previously unbeaten Michigan St. in first match in the Stroh Center * Won Best Western Falcon Plaza Invitational in 2011 * Went 8-1 at home in 2012 * Undefeated in non-conference matches in Stroh Center * Average home attendance has doubled; Third-highest in MAC in 2012
BGSU stunned previously unbeaten Michigan State in four sets in the first varsity athletics event ever held in the Stroh Center. The crowd of 2,961 was the largest to ever watch a Falcon home volleyball match.
HISTORY IS MADE Even before the Stroh Center was complete, the NCAA accepted Bowling Green’s bid to serve as a host for the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Tournament. Baylor, the first men’s or women’s basketball team to go 40-0, began its run through the tournament at the Stroh Center and National Player of the Year Brittney Griner became just the second women’s player to dunk in NCAA Tournament history, slamming one home in traffic in the opening round. All three tournament games held in the Stroh Center were sell-outs.
GOING VIRAL
The ‘Stroh Center Rap’, a video created for the Stroh Center dedication on Sept. 9, 2011, featured the talents of BGSU students Mikey “Rosco” Blair and Rachel Willingham, along with donors Kermit Stroh, Larry Miles, Bill Frack, and Allen Schmidhorst. The video was featured nationally in a variety of places, including ESPN.com, and has been viewed well over 190,000 times.

2013 OUTLOOK The Bowling Green State University volleyball team, of Head Coach Danijela Tomic, welcomes back nine players from a team that went 22-11 in 2012, winning the Mid-American Conference Championship and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Coaching Staff Head Coach Danijela Tomic made a bang in her first season in Bowling Green, leading the Falcons to a 22-11 record and the program’s first ever NCAA Tournament win. Tomic enters her ninth season as a head coach overall, with a career record of 18072. Tomic will be joined by second-year assistant coach Jessica Hohl, and first-year assistant Rodnei Santos. The staff will be rounded out by first-year volunteer coach Madeline Amon and first-year director of volleyball operations Jordan Cravens. Returning Players The Falcons return nine players from last season’s NCAA Tournament team, including 5-of-6 starters. Seven seniors return, including all-MAC first team performers Lindsey Butterfield (LS), Paige Penrod (LS), and Danielle Tonyan (RS). Laura Avila, a senior setter, also returns after starting all 33 matches last season, while middle Kaitlyn Skinner returns as well. Seniors Ashley Dunn (Libero) and Libby Dachenhaus (DS) are back for the Falcons, in addition to juniors Kelsey Bates and Erica Fullenkamp. Newcomers The Falcons will round out the 2013 roster with nine newcomers, including eight freshman and one graduate student. Allison Papenfuss, a four-year member of the women’s basketball team at Bowling Green, joins the volleyball program for her fifth year of eligibility as she pursues a master’s degree. The eight freshman include three defensive specialist/liberos (Madeline Garda, Delaney Arkeilpane, and Amanda Schiavo), one setter (Anna Starr), one middle (Alyssa Maloney), and three outside hitters (Carlyn Stella, Jelena Sunjic, and Desi Klaer). MAC Championship Recognition The 2012 Mid-American Conference champions will be recognized on Friday, August 30, when the Falcons play Marquette inside the Stroh Center. That game will be part of the Hampton Inn Invitational. Defending The MAC Title The Falcons look to continue building in Tomic’s second season. A year after finishing the regular season just one win shy of the MAC title, the Falcons will look to win the regular season in addition to the MAC Tournament in 2013. The Falcons are also looking to take their run in the NCAA Tournament a step further, as they lost in the second round to Penn State in 2012.

Tomic turned around a program that had gone just 27-36 in the two seasons prior to her arrival, taking the Falcons to a 22-11 overall record and 13-3 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Falcons finished the regular season in second place in the league before winning the MAC Tournament over Northern Illinois in five sets. With the MAC Tournament victory, Bowling Green earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and the Falcons faced Ivy League Champion Yale in the first round. The Falcons again won a five-setter before losing to No. 1 Penn State in the second round. In just one season, Tomic built a determined and tough-minded team that never wilted. A five-set loss to Utah early in the year dropped the Falcons to just 2-6 but it was the only time Bowling Green would lose a five-set match the rest of the way. BGSU won 20 of its next 24 matches, including a 9-0 record in five sets. The Falcons won their first eight MAC contests but lost out on the regular season league crown with a loss to Northern Illinois in the final match of the year. Bowling Green got its revenge by defeating Northern Illinois in five sets to win the MAC Tournament Championship for just the second time in program history and the first time since 1991. In her first year, Tomic’s team compiled an array of awards including three first-team all-conference honors, two members of the MAC All-Tournament Team, the MAC Tournament Most Valuable Player (Paige Penrod), six MAC Player of the Week honors, and two MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week

Prior to her arrival at Bowling Green, Tomic was a three-time Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year at Florida International. In seven years as head coach at FIU, she had a record of 158-61. A 1999 graduate of Arkansas-Little Rock, Tomic was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year in 2006, 2008, and 2009, guiding the Panthers to the NCAA Tournament in each of those last two seasons. The 2009 team set a program record by going 32-4, which included a 17-0 mark in conference play. Tomic took over at FIU in 2005 and made an immediate impact as her team improved by 12 wins over the previous season and reached the SBC Tournament as the No. 6 seed after missing out in two of the previous three years. In seven years at FIU, her players earned six AVCA All-American awards, two Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year honors, and 24 All-Sun Belt Conference awards. Under her tutelage, one athlete was named AVCA South Region Freshman of the Year. Tomic also demands well-rounded student-athletes as her team earned the Dr. Paul D. Gallagher Community Service Award in 2008, presented to the FIU team that has gone the extra mile in performing community service throughout the year. She had 20 selections to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List (grade point average of 3.5 or better) and 27 selections to the Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll. Prior to her time at FIU, Tomic was an assistant coach at LSU during the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Before that, she spent six years as an assistant coach at UALR from 1997-03. She played at UALR from 1995-97 as an outside hitter, right side hitter, and setter, helping to lead the team to the 1996 NCAA Tournament. She was named Most Valuable Player of the SBC

ROMMECK COMPETES WITH NATIONAL TRAINING TEAM When the Falcons’ 2001 volleyball season came to an end that November, one Falcon team member’s season was far from finished. Caty Rommeck was selected to the USA Women’s National Training Team, and headed to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in January of 2002. The team consisted of 12 players picked from a tryout held in San Diego, Calif., after the Final Four in mid-December, 2001. Players vying to make the team included members of the last U.S. National Team as well as U.S. Professional Volleyball. “I am thrilled for Caty to have this opportunity,” said BGSU head coach Denise Van De Walle at the time of Rommeck’s selection. “To train at the Olympic Training Center with Toshi (coach Toshiaka Yoshida) and the other players selected is a chance of a lifetime.” In 2001, her senior season, Rommeck earned All-MAC First-Team honors for the second consecutive year, and also was named to the All-Mideast Region Team. She became just the fourth Falcon player to earn all-region honors in the history of the program, and the first in a decade. Rommeck’s name can be found throughout the BGSU record lists. Rommeck capped off her successful three-year career at BGSU by leading the Falcons to a third consecutive 21-win season. She led the MAC by a wide margin in kills per game and was second in the league in blocks per game.

FALCONS AT THE U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL Being selected to play in any national or international competition is certainly a goal of many collegiate athletes. BG’s Tammy Schiller realized that goal in the summer of 1990 when she participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis, and again in 1991 when she competed in the games in Los Angeles. The middle hitter assisted the South team to a 3-1 record en route to the 1991 gold medal. She played in all four of her team’s matches. In nine games, Schiller registered 14 kills for a hitting percentage of .297. She also recorded 19 digs and nine blocks. Schiller had a strong outing in the gold-medal match against the West in which the South came back to win 5-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-8. The only team to defeat Schiller’s South squad was BG head coach Denise Van De Walle’s bronzemedal winning East unit, which came away with a thrilling 15-11, 9-15, 10-15, 16-14, 1510 victory. Van De Walle, who was selected to coach the U.S. Junior National Women’s Team at the NORCECA World Championships in 1992, also coached the West at the USOF in 1993. Her squad was the only team to defeat the eventual gold-medal winners that year as well. Schiller struck silver in 1990 as a member of the West where she led her team with a .298 attack percentage, collecting 23 kills in four matches. The West team went undefeated in pool play, but lost to the North in four games in the gold-medal match. With Schiller’s selection to compete in the Festival in 1990, she became only the second BG volleyball player to earn a spot on a Festival roster. That same year, Schiller and teammate Linda Popovich became the first BG players to earn All-Mideast honors. Popovich was the initial Falcon to compete in the Festival, earning the honor in 1987.

FALCONS IN THE HALL OF FAME
On July 21, 2006, former Falcon volleyball standouts Carlyn Esslinger and Megan McGuire joined an elite few when they were inducted into the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame. Esslinger, a twotime All-MAC first-teamer, joined Linda Popovich, Tammy Schiller and Lisa Mika as the fourth Falcon volleyball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. She holds the all-time record for most attack attempts and second most kills in Falcon history. After completing her basketball career, McGuire joined the Falcon volleyball squad and helped lead them to their first MAC title in 1989. Mika, a native of Flossmoor. Ill., was a four-time All-MAC selection from 1988-91. Mika is the Falcons’ all-time leader with 569 total blocks, including 156 solo rejections. She also finds herself ranked in the top five in four offensive categories. Popovich and Schiller, obviously, also had incredible success as BGSU student-athletes. Popovich capped her brilliant four-year career, both on and off the court, by earning the 1990 Walter Byers Scholarship. That award is given to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. In addition, she was the first BG athlete to earn GTE Academic All-America honors three times. On the court, she was the MAC’s Player of the Year as a senior. Schiller earned All-MAC first-team honors three times and twice was the league’s Player of the Year. She is the only Falcon volleyball player to amass such totals. Additionally, Schiller was the only first-team All-Mideast selection in school annals. She twice participated at the U.S. Olympic Festival, and – like Popovich – still ranks at or near the top of numerous Falcon record lists.

LINDA POPOVICH
Linda Popovich, one of the finest studentathletes to go through the University, capped a brilliant four-year career as a student in 1990 by earning the Walter Byers Scholarship, and as an athlete by being named the “Most Valuable Player” in the MAC. A 1995 BGSU Hall of Fame inductee, Popovich concluded her academic career at BG with a 3.95 GPA majoring in political science and economics. BGSU’s representative at numerous student symposiums and programs, she earned the Byers Award which is given annually to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. Byers Award candidates must have at least a 3.50 GPA, show evidence of superior character and leadership, and demonstrate that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on personal and intellectual development. In addition, Popovich, a setter, was a firstteam Academic All-American each of her last two years at BG. A third-team Academic All-American as a sophomore, Popovich was the first BG athlete to earn GTE national academic honors three times and was only the fourth from a MAC institution. She is the only female in conference history to earn first-team national academic honors twice and was a three-time MAC All-Academic pick. On the court, Popovich earned all-MAC laurels four times, league freshman-of-theyear accolades in 1986, and MAC Player-of-the-Year honors in 1989. She established league career records for assists (4,460 - 17th on the NCAA career list at the time) and digs (1,246) and left BG holding five additional school records. Her career assist and ace totals still stand as school marks. Popovich played in every game of every match during her four-year career.
