volleyball player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. She holds the all-time record for most attack attempts and second most kills in Falcon history. After completing her basketball career, McGuire joined the Falcon volleyball squad and helped lead them to their first MAC title in 1989. Mika, a native of Flossmoor. Ill., was a four-time All-MAC selection from 1988-91. Mika is the Falcons’ all-time leader with 569 total blocks, including 156 solo rejections. She also finds herself ranked in the top five in four offensive categories. Popovich and Schiller, obviously, also had incredible success as BGSU student-athletes. Popovich capped her brilliant four-year career, both on and off the court, by earning the 1990 Walter Byers Scholarship. That

Schiller earned All-MAC first-team honors three times and twice was the league’s Player of the Year. She is the only Falcon volleyball player to amass such totals. Additionally, Schiller was the only first-team All-Mideast selection in school annals. She twice participated at the U.S. Olympic Festival, and – like Popovich – still ranks at or near the top of numerous Falcon record lists.

FALCONs playing nationally

ROMMECK COMPETES WITH NATIONAL TRAINING TEAM When the Falcons’ 2001 volleyball season came to an end that November, one Falcon team member’s season was far from finished. Caty Rommeck was selected to the USA Women’s National Training Team, and headed to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., in January of 2002. The team consisted of 12 players picked from a tryout held in San Diego, Calif., after the Final Four in mid-December, 2001. Players vying to make the team included members of the last U.S. National Team as well as U.S. Professional Volleyball. “I am thrilled for Caty to have this opportunity,” said BGSU head coach Denise Van De Walle at the time of Rommeck’s selection. “To train at the Olympic Training Center with Toshi (coach Toshiaka Yoshida) and the other players selected is a chance of a lifetime.” In 2001, her senior season, Rommeck earned All-MAC First-Team honors for the second consecutive year, and also was named to the All-Mideast Region Team. She became just the fourth Falcon player to earn all-region honors in the history of the program, and the first in a decade. Rommeck’s name can be found throughout the BGSU record lists. Rommeck capped off her successful three-year career at BGSU by leading the Falcons to a third consecutive 21-win season. She led the MAC by a wide margin in kills per game and was second in the league in blocks per game.

FALCONS AT THE U.S. OLYMPIC FESTIVAL Being selected to play in any national or international competition is certainly a goal of many collegiate athletes. BG’s Tammy Schiller realized that goal in the summer of 1990 when she participated in the U.S. Olympic Festival in Minneapolis, and again in 1991 when she competed in the games in Los Angeles. The middle hitter assisted the South team to a 3-1 record en route to the 1991 gold medal. She played in all four of her team’s matches. In nine games, Schiller registered 14 kills for a hitting percentage of .297. She also recorded 19 digs and nine blocks. Schiller had a strong outing in the gold-medal match against the West in which the South came back to win 5-15, 13-15, 15-11, 15-12, 15-8. The only team to defeat Schiller’s South squad was BG head coach Denise Van De Walle’s bronze-medal winning East unit, which came away with a thrilling 15-11, 9-15, 10-15, 16-14, 15-10 victory. Van De Walle, who was selected to coach the U.S. Junior National Women’s Team at the NORCECA World Championships in 1992, also coached the West at the USOF in 1993. Her squad was the only team to defeat the eventual goldmedal winners that year as well. Schiller struck silver in 1990 as a member of the West where she led her team with a .298 attack percentage, collecting 23 kills in four matches. The West team went undefeated in pool play, but lost to the North in four games in the goldmedal match. With Schiller’s selection to compete in the Festival in 1990, she became only the second BG volleyball player to earn a spot on a Festival roster. That same year, Schiller and teammate Linda Popovich became the first BG players to earn All-Mideast honors. Popovich was the initial Falcon to compete in the Festival, earning the honor in 1987.

LINDA POPOVICH Linda Popovich, one of the finest student-athletes to go through the University, capped a brilliant fouryear career as a student in 1990 by earning the Walter Byers Scholarship, and as an athlete by being named the “Most Valuable Player” in the MAC. A 1995 BGSU Hall of Fame inductee, Popovich concluded her academic career at BG with a 3.95 GPA majoring in political science and economics. BGSU’s representative at numerous student symposiums and programs, she earned the Byers Award which is given annually to the top male and female graduating seniors in the country. Byers Award candidates must have at least a 3.50 GPA, show evidence of superior character and leadership, and demonstrate that participation in athletics has been a positive influence on personal and intellectual development. In addition, Popovich, a setter, was a first-team Academic All-American each of her last two years at BG. A third-team Academic All-American as a sophomore, Popovich was the first BG athlete to earn GTE national academic honors three times and was only the fourth from a MAC institution. She is the only female in conference history to earn first-team national academic honors twice and was a three-time MAC All-Academic pick. On the court, Popovich earned all-MAC laurels four times, league freshman-of-the-year accolades in 1986, and MAC Player-of-the-Year honors in 1989. She established league career records for assists (4,460 - 17th on the NCAA career list at the time) and digs (1,246) and left BG holding five additional school records. Her career assist and ace totals still stand as school marks. Popovich played in every game of every match during her four-year career.
