Dear devotional reader, Hearty devotional greetings to all devotees on the auspicious occasion of Sharat Poornima. Sharat Poornima is of supreme importance to all devotees. It was during this occasion, just 5000 years ago, when the ocean of everlasting divine bliss, the very fountainhead and crown jewel of all Rasiks, Shyamsundar performed Maharaas with Raseshwari Shri Radharani and the Gopis. The signiďŹ cance of this holy occasion is multiplied for it is also the night in 1922 when the embodiment of love and bliss, Bhaktiyograsavatar, our beloved Gurudev appeared on this earth. The purpose of this descension was only to shower grace

ROOPDHYAN The heart of devotional practice

The following is a Roopdhyan, revealed by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, we can avail ourselves of in daily devotional practice. It is the auspicious time of Sharat Poornima (the full moon night of the fall, October). Vrindavan is appearing to be unusually, splendidly beautiful. Ponds, like Piri Pokhar and Prem Sarovar, are adorned with pink, perfumed lotus flowers. Intoxicated with the nectar of the lotuses, bumble bees are sweetly buzzing over them. A gentle breeze, infused with the deep fragrance of the lotus flowers, is softly blowing. Shyamsundar, along with His playmates and cows, is entering Vrindavan. The lavish surroundings are ornamented by trees with lusciously delectable fruits and delicate, colorful blossoms. Alluring vines and creepers hanging over the trees are imparting additional beauty to the atmosphere. Parrots and cuckoo birds are singing 'Radhe Radhe' in their melodious tunes. Spreading his feathers, the peacock is delightfully dancing with the peahen.

Such is the bewitching and fascinating effect of Shyamsundar's flute that cows have grass in their mouths, and yet, they have forgotten to chew on it. Calves have droplets of milk on their lips, but have forgotten to suckle on their mother's milk. Deer have forgotten to rebound and bounce and, mesmerised, are simply drinking the nectar of Shyamsundar's supreme beauty through their big, wide eyes. The ever-restless monkeys sitting on trees became motionless and calm. Even the natural flow of Yamuna (river) stalled. The curve of the wind became solemn, against its own nature. O mind! You should also lovingly remember Natwar Nagar Shri Krishna. Knowing Him to be Your Only and true relation, dedicate your body, mind and soul in His divine service. True to His name, He is causelessly merciful and gracious. One day, He will surely come and make you His own forever.

The ravishing beauty of Shyamsundar is heartcaptivating. He is dressed in natvar style with a kachhani elegantly tied on top of the peetambar (which is covering the lower part of His body). A vaijayantimala (garland), strung with five kinds of fragrant flowers - tulsi, kund, mandar (native plant and flower of Braj), lotus and parijat (a celestial flower) - is glorifying His neck. The exquisite perfume of the garland, combined with the breath-taking fragrance of Shyamsundar's body, is creating an overwhelmingly exciting mood in the surroundings. Shyamsundar's lotus lips are kissing His magical flute. Playing heart-enticing notes on the flute, He is stealing the hearts of static and animate beings alike. The intriguing rhythm and vibration of the flute is enchanting the heart and mind of anyone who hears it. Leaving aside the stupefied ears, all other sense organs cease their respective functions. In such a static state, swept away by the rapid currents of the melodious tunes of Shyamsundar's flute, that lucky soul is becoming lost in the boundless ocean of bliss.

Roopdhya is absolutely indispensable

in devotional practice. By Roopdhyan we mean the absorption of the mind in the loving remembrance of God's form. Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

Greatness of Maharaas Out of all the scriptures in the Hindu religion, Bhagwat Mahapuran reigns supreme. Ved Vyas did not write the Bhagwatam, nor did he create it. Bhagwan Shri Krishna Himself, while seated in Brahma's heart, inspired the divine knowledge of the Bhagwatam in the heart of Brahma. After that, while seated in the heart of Narad Ji, Shri Krishna bestowed the knowledge of the Bhagwatam upon Narad Ji, and after that, Shri Krishna Himself recited the Bhagwatam to Shukdev and Shukdev recited it to Parikchit. The expounder of the Bhagwatam, Shukdevparamhans himself is Brahm, and Parikchit became God-realised in his mother's womb. The five chapters (of the tenth canto) of the Bhagwatam that describe the supreme bliss of Maharaas are known as ‘Panchpraan’ (five soul) of the Bhagwatam. In regards to the subject of Maharaas, Rasik Saints have explained that the one who is qualified to describe and to listen to the secrets of Maharaas belongs to the sixth stage. Sixth stage refers to the ultrasuperior stage of the spiritual practice of a Gyani. Rasik Saints have described that at the fifth stage, the Gyani loses complete awareness of his physical identity. Above and 3

beyond this stage, when one enters the sixth stage, he deserves the right to talk about or to hear about Maharaas. Shri Krishna observed the (full moon) nights that manifested in the jungles before Maharaas. These nights were inspired and created by Yogmaya. The length of one night (of the Maharaas) was equal to one night of Brahma (which is four billion, three-hundredtwenty million years). It was for these divine nights that Shri Krishna h a d granted a boon to t h e Gopis during the ‘Chi rharan’ leela (a leela in which Shri Krishna stole the clothes of the little five-year-old Gopis while they were bathing in the Yamuna). Such was the effect of the night that flowers of all the six s e a s o n s blossomed and Shri Krishna decided to delight the h e a r t s o f deserving souls with the supreme bliss of His infinite divine grace (in the form

of Maharaas). Now, associates were needed upon whom divine grace was to be bestowed, so Shri Krishna remembered Kishori Ji. Kishori Ji said, "Play such a melody on Your flute, that only those souls who deserve the (supreme bliss of) Maharaas can hear it." Lord Shankar ran upon hearing the divine sound of the flute, however, the husbands of the Gopis and anyone else who was undeserving kept on sleeping. Yogmaya, in other words, Kishori Ji, extended their sleep equal to the length Brahma's one night (four billion three-hundred-twenty million years). When Shri Krishna played His flute, the sound of the flute entered their ears and the flute stole the heart of the deserving souls; this was the first grace. Now, when the heart was lost, the soul began frantically searching

for her heart and started running in the direction of the sound of the flute, just the way she was. Out of all the Gopis, some were from Golok, and some Gopis were young girls from Janakpur who were blessed with a boon from Bhagwan Ram (during His descension in Tretayug). Some were Paramhans from Dandkaranya forest, while others were Agniputra (There were sixteen thousand Rishis performing penance in the forest during Bhagwan Ram's exile. These were the sons of Agni (god of fire). Seeing Bhagwan Ram, they all developed a strong yearning to have Bhagwan Ram as their beloved. At the end of Dwapar, these Rishis became Gopis).

they sang 'Gopi Geet'. 'Gopi Geet' in the Bhagwatam is most important, as it was chanted to bring Shri Krishna back, and Kishori Ji was a part of it. Upon hearing the rather deep and humble yearning of the Gopis, Shri Krishna lost control over His heart and appeared before the Gopis, who then experienced the infinite bliss of supreme Divine happiness.

There are five classes of Gopis, ranking from the lowest to the highest - the lowest is Sakhi, higher is Nitya Sakhi, even higher is Pran Sakhi, even further higher is Priya Sakhi and the highest is Paramshresth Sakhi, like Lalita, Vishakha and the other eight Mahasakhis. They are exceptionally superior. There were many different categories of Saints and all of them had their own distinctively unique and elevated state of divine stupor. It was due to this reason that, in their individual style, each Gopi started hastily running toward the divine sound of the flute in that state of divine stupor. When the Gopis finally reached Shri Krishna, they were told by Shri Krishna to return to their homes and, as a result, a debate took place between Shri Krishna and the Gopis. Shri Krishna was defeated and He said, "I was simply testing you all." After that, Maharaas began. At the time of Maharaas, the Gopis developed pride of being superior to other women. As soon as pride crept into the heart of the Gopis, Shri Krishna disappeared with Kishori Ji (from Maharaas). Now, the Gopis began lamenting. Firstly, they asked the trees and creepers (about the whereabouts of Shrr Krishna and Kishori Ji). After that, in the mahabhav state, they began enacting the leelas (pastimes) of Shri Krishna.

As a result of the Gopis asking, Shri Krishna said, “I disappeared to intensify your devotion. I didn't go anywhere. I was quietly singing your glories and affectionately remembering all of you.” Further, Shri Krishna said, “O Gopis! I consider Myself to be so deeply indebted to your selfless devotion that even if I tried to serve you to the extent of the age of celestial gods, even then I will not be able to repay your debt.” Hearing this from the lotus lips of their beloved Shri Krishna, the Gopis' hearts were overwhelmed with joy. After that, Maharaas began. What happened in Maharaas? This can only be appreciated after becoming qualified with the grace of a Maharasik (Saint).

Upon seeing the footprints of the divine lotus feet of Shri Krishna and Kishori Ji, the Gopis started speculating amongst themselves, “Shri Krishna went from here and a Gopi went along with Him.” Seeing the unbearable and grievous state of Her soul-beloved Sakhis, Kishori Ji entered the state of maan and as a result, Shri Krishna left Kishori Ji also. Now, all the Gopis who were wailing (in the painful separation of Shri Krishna) saw Kishori Ji lying unconscious in their path. After that, all the Gopis, along with Kishori Ji, congregated and together 4

A glimpse of

Sharat Poornima & Rath Yatra

with Shri Maharaj Ji Sharat Poornima is that divine night when Radha Krishna revealed the supreme bliss of Maharaas to uncountable Gopis in Vrindavan about 5,000 years ago. It is the full moon night which falls in October. This day is very precious in our lives because our beloved Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj appeared on that night in 1922 in Mangarh, India. At Shri Bhakti Dham, Mangarh, the ashram would overflow with devotees who had come from all over India and all over the world to participate in the festivities. In the early morning before 3 am, thousands would line up at Maharaj Ji's home wearing yellow Radhe-Shyami shawls to do pranam and offer their love and “appearance day” best wishes one by one. Maharaj Ji would sit for

5

hours upon hours until each and every person had their chance to greet him. The day would be filled with devotional activities, but the crown jewel was the Rath Yatra. The devotees would form a procession with Shri Maharaj Ji sitting on an elegantly decorated chariot. The procession started from his residence with loud cheers. In no time, devotees were dancing with raised arms filled with devotional joy, bands were playing loudly, and everyone was chanting, rejoicing and catching glimpses of Shri Maharaj Ji as he sang, leading the chanting. Later in the evening, Shri Maharaj Ji enlightened the hearts and minds of the audience with his speech that revealed the bliss of Maharaas. Finally devotees performed Radha Krishna leelas (plays) and enacted the Maharaas dance in beautiful costumes, where each Gopi had her own Krishna, in an expression of love and dedication to Shri Maharaj Ji and Radha Krishna. Today, the similar activities continue and he showers the same grace and his divine omnipresence is overwhelmingly experienced by all.

Timeless Guru How is it possible that the temples and halls of JKP Bhakti Dham, JKP Shyama Shyam Dham and JKP Rangeeli Mahal are over flowing with new devotees from India and all over the world several years after Shri Maharaj Ji's visible descension has passed… First, know what our scriptures say about the Guru…

including chanting with Roopdhyan, reading and listening to his discourses about the path of divine love called Bhakti. So proceed on the path of Bhakti, making it your primary aim, and he will grace you when your mind is completely purified. Strengthen your faith that his divine discourses (through TV, DVD and MP3s) will guide you on the path.

The One who is capable of dispelling the darkness of ignorance is called Guru. Try it and see; you will surely be benefitted. The One who eliminates ignorance is called Guru. The One who imparts divine knowledge is Guru. Shimad Bhagwatam 11.3.21 and the Bhagwad Gita 4.34 states only a ‘shrotriya brahmanishtha’ (enlightened soul who is well-versed in the scriptures and has practical realisation of God) is qualified to be called a Guru and is capable of taking you to your supreme goal of Godrealisation. Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj was the foremost scholar of all the Vedas and scriptures of this age. His massive amounts of discourses, sankirtans and literary works are capable of dispelling the darkness of ignorance like thousands of bright suns, which can still be read and heard by anyone. First, the Guru instills the discipline required to perform devotional practice by scriptural concepts and principles (tatva gyan). In time, the mind begins to purify. When this process is complete, he bestows divine love which in fact is the only true initiation. This is the duty of the Guru, and the duty of the aspirant is to perform spiritual discipline as taught by the Guru

It is therefore clear that even today an aspirant can practice devotion according to Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj's teachings and be benefitted by knowing the supreme path to attaining the supreme goal. Shri Maharaj Ji wrote “I am always with you countless times and I will be right up to the attainment of God and even after that”. We will again have his association in the divine abode of Lord Krishna. The one he adopts he can never desert him.

Your sweet memories are the driving force for us and we shall be forever indebted to y o u for all your countless acts of gracefulness that you showered upon us. We pray to the all-merciful Lord to grant us unbroken association with our beloved Gurudev until eternity. 6

Who am I ? PART 2, conclusion Continued from Issue 1

Since time immemorial, these are some of the most debated questions that scores of sacred texts, manuscripts and religious books have attempted to answer. Renowned philosophers, scholars, theologists, historians, and even scientists have propounded a variety of theories. Yet, very few have been able to provide a universally acceptable answer. The most comprehensive and decisive answer to these questions is provided in the divine scriptures of ‘Sanatan Dharma’, the eternal religion. The original name of Hinduism is ‘Sanatan Dharma’. ‘Sanatan’ means eternal and 'Dharma' means those actions, thoughts and practices that promote social, cultural and economic harmony in the world and ensure God-realisation. Standing tall amongst all the scriptures of the world, The Vedas, Upaniṣhads, the Smṛitis, the Purāṇas, Darśhanśhāstras, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayan, the Bhāgwatam, as well as the writing of many Saints, Acharyas and Jagadgurus, reveal the complete knowledge for the sincere and faithful. The concept of eternity is difficult to grasp since our conception of time is limited.

We are unable to reconcile the notion of something or someone being eternal that has no beginning or end. Our modern scientific method of learning and thinking does not lend itself favourably to believe facts such as, 'God is eternal' or 'the scriptures' are eternal. We always look for a beginning and an end. The mind is skeptical by nature. But the spiritual world, which governs the material world is an eternal realm beyond the immediate grasp of the material mind which we have. It would not be possible to fathom or comprehend it unless we are given a divine intellect. Hence, it is best to put our complete faith and belief in the holy scriptures, the Saints and the Guru during the learning process. Just as we trust our teacher in school during our kindergarten stages without questioning too much, it will be beneficial to trust the facts of spiritual wisdom as presented. These doubts will slowly disappear as the facts present themselves, falling into place like a giant puzzle, to unravel the philosophical truth of the spiritual realm at the opportune moment.

The grace of Guru is indescribabl . Our goal of Go -realisatio would be accomplished only if we can realise how our Gur serve u from the beginning to the end (of our devotional life). We don't realise hi grac . Day and night he works tirelessly for our spiritual development. Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

3 Steps to enter the path to

God-Realisation

Bhakti is the most direct and the easiest path ro Godrealisation.

extended to its fullest perfection, it is bliss. So we can say without reservation that God is Bliss.

Bhakti or Divine Love Consciousness means keeping Krishna with you in your consciousness. It is nothing you can do physically. Bhakti is having a positive mind in God without worldly desires. Not wanting material things from God. It is a submission of your heart and mind to your Divine Beloved.

The qualification to enter this path is open to everyone. Our scriptures are clear when they say that every soul is qualified. All souls desire happiness. Perfect happiness is God. When you understand this fact, you are qualified to enter the path of God-realisation. God is Bliss, Happiness, Love – everything your soul is looking for. To develop this faith means you are on the path towards God.

As Krishna states to Arjun, “Give your mind to Me, give your heart to Me, worship Me and adore Me”. This path, this evolving process will ultimately unite the soul with his Beloved form of God. A soul who has devoted his life to this process is called a devotee. A soul becomes a real devotee when his awareness of himself is replaced by God consciousness. One only needs to know 3 things: 1. Who is God? 2. What is the path to God? 3. What is the qualification to enter this path? If one has the answers to these questions, then that soul will find no hindrance in proceeding on the path to Godrealisation. One must know that God is happiness. When happiness is

This path will evolve your affinity. Affinity is the feeling of a sweet loving relationship with God that grows, matures and intensifies. This path of Bhakti may lead you to attain absolute Divine Bhakti. As your love for God unfolds and becomes more profound, you begin to feel that God is your Divine Beloved. This is an understanding that develops. As this development occurs, your worldly desires become obscure and your attachment to God increases. The attachment is self-nourishing. It's progressive. One needs do very little since this devotional energy unfolds and grows on it's own accord. It's almost as though it's self-perpetuating. One might liken it to lighting a fire and protecting it from the wind so it can grow. If one properly protects and feeds this devotional fire of love, it will become all consuming, and nothing will be able to extinguish it. This is the grace that unites the soul with his Divine Beloved.

My Guru... is always very close to me and is always with me day and night. He is never away from me. 8

Jagadguru 1008 Swami

Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj The Descension of Divine Love and Bliss

Just one charm of his divine loving nature is that whoever met him, thought “He loves me the most”. Even more charming than this, Shri Maharaj Ji's divine love, divine protection and divine association is even more strongly felt now, then when he was on this earth planet. So coming close to him now, through his books, his chanting, his videos, visiting his ashrams, will create an intense feeling of closeness and love for any soul who is looking for perfect love and happiness. We have a conventional belief that saints live in the mountains, on the bank of a river or in a quiet quaint hut in a place of pilgrimage. They either sleep on the floor or on a bed of rags. They lead a renunciate life etc. In fact, those Saints who are helping our planet generally may live like that.

extraordinary divine personality glowing in ecstasy. When he danced in unrestrained enthusiasm in the ‘Hari Bol’ kirtan, the whole environment exuded Divine Love Bliss. As one gets to know him and comes close to his heart, his title of 5th original Jagadguru of the ages subsides and the feelings and thoughts of “my Maharaj Ji” is all that remains. His video discourses and chantings are such that he never had to ask anyone to quit non-veg food or alcohol. His philosophy has such a one-of-a-kind tremendous impact on the devotees that they naturally desist from these things.

He never advised His followers to renounce their family However, Shri Maharaj Ji had come to our earth planet in a life. He said live in the family and practice devotion. Also family of Saints, so that his grace could be distributed one's desires for material objects and happiness from them beyond his desired time here. are greatly minimised. One never knew when he would deliver a life changing speech. It could be in front of an enormous crowd or sitting casually with a few devotees. So he was videotaped everywhere he went. His golden words to be saved and shared for posterity. Even his kirtans would disclose his

Message from our Presidents Divine souls, Saints have declared that we are both the body and the soul. In order to sustain the body, we need the material world. Food, shelter, clothing, etc are all important in the sustenance of the body. However, whilst the body needs the world, the soul desperately seeks true and everlasting happiness - God. God is bliss personified and the soul naturally seeks Him. Therefore, in order to sustain the soul, God is needed. In this modern age, we are not giving enough attention to our personal welfare because our sole focus is on our body. This causes restlessness and sadness, because – identifying ourselves as the body – we put our efforts into finite material gains. Our soul needs as much attention, if not more, in order to reduce the feelings of anxiety and doubt that we endure. It is therefore important to know, that we are seeking genuine happiness and peace in a world where it does not exist. In fact, the more material objects we gain, the more our frustrations arise. This is because true happiness lies only with God. God, who is the formless - Brahm for those who pursue Gyan, the serene divinity - Paramatma for the Yogis and the personal and loving God - Bhagwan for the Bhakts. He is the only source of true and eternal happiness. We may look for happiness everywhere in this modern world but it is futile as it doesn't exist in the world.

In such a world, where everyone is searching for bliss and joy, the divine discourses of Shri Maharaj Ji have spread peace and happiness to those that have opened their hearts to listen. The valuable knowledge he has shared will help us go beyond the three major worldly pains (that inflict the body and mind, pain caused by other creatures and the forces of nature) and achieve everlasting happiness. Shri Maharaj Ji has re-established the tradition of the great Rishis and Sages by spreading the knowledge of the Vedas and other scriptural texts. This has helped to establish Vedic culture more securely. At the same time, He has founded a great organisation, namely, Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat, which is wholeheartedly engaged in social and philanthropic activities. We pray to Shri Radha-Krishna that this organization may continue in its pursuit of the path shown by Shri Maharaj Ji and serve humanity earnestly. We want to utilise our human body meaningfully by following the teachings of our Guru. “We neither seek splendours of the world, nor liberation from the cycle of life and death, nor do we desire the divine abode Vaikuntha of Maha-Vishnu. Our only wish is to spend our entire life serving our Guru.” In the loving service of our Guru, Vishakha, Shyama & Krishna

Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat (JKP) For over 60 years, Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj worked tirelessly for the welfare of humanity. He founded an organisation - Jagadguru Kripalu Parishat (JKP), to effectively carry out various spiritual, philanthropic and humanitarian activities in order to serve the general public. JKP has established three 100% charitable hospitals which provide free treatment and medications to the poor and a free educational institution for underprivileged girls from primary to post-graduate level. JKP also organises several free distributions throughout the year, giving the poor and underprivileged communities in rural parts of North India hope and opportunities for a bigger and brighter future.
